Decays of the pi+ pi- atom

We construct an effective non-relativistic quantum field theory that describes bound states of pi+ pi- pairs and their hadronic decays. We then derive a general expression for the lifetime of the ground state at next-to-leading order in isospin breaking. Chiral perturbation theory allows one to relate the decay rate to the two S-wave pi pi scattering lengths and to several low-energy constants that occur in the chiral Lagrangian. Recent predictions for the scattering lengths give tau = (2.9 \pm 0.1) * 10^{-15} sec. This result may be confronted with pi+ pi- lifetime measurements, like the one presently carried out at CERN.

Effective Lagrangians in bound state calculations

In order to investigate specific aspects of bound state calculations in a non-relativistic framework, we consider the energy-levels of a massive scalar particle, which moves in an external field and interacts in addition with a massless scalar particle. The discussion includes the following topics: dimensionally regularized bound-state calculations, ultraviolet finiteness of bound-state observables and their independence of the off-mass-shell behavior of Green functions, non-renormalizable interactions, structure of the non-relativistic two-point function, power counting and matching.

Matching in Nonrelativistic Effective Quantum Field Theories

Nonrelativstic effective field theories have shown to be a useful framework to describe systems of weakly bound particles. This work focuses on the matching procedure to the underlying relativistic theory. The concept of a physical mass in the absence of explicit Lorentz symmetry and the matching conditions for S-matrix elements and Green's functions are discussed in general for scalar particles. The effective Lagrangians of the pure particle and anti-particle sectors are constructed explicitely for a Yukawa-type interaction of a heavy and a light scalar field. Using the proper matching, it is shown that they reproduce the corresponding relativistic amplitudes in a systematic expansion in inverse powers of the heavy mass.

On the Lifetime of the pi+pi- Atom

The pi+pi- atom decays -in the ground state - predominantly into two neutral pions. We present a general expression for the corresponding decay width in the framework of QCD (including photons). It contains all terms at leading and next-to-leading order in isospin breaking. The result allows one to evaluate the combination |a_0-a_2| of pi-pi S-wave scattering lengths from pi+pi- lifetime measurements, like the one presently performed by the DIRAC experiment at CERN.
