Production of charmed particles in proton-proton and light nucleus-nucleus interactions in Geant4 FTF model

The total yield of neutral D-mesons (4$π$) in central Xe+La interactions at 150 GeV per nucleon has been calculated within the Geant4 FTF model. Our calculation is close to predictions of Monte Carlo models that do not account for quark-gluon plasma formation. As the predictions, our calculation substantially underestimates preliminary experimental data. The experimental data indicate enhanced charmed particle production in nucleus-nucleus interactions. We present also our calculations for charmed meson production in ${\rm p+p}$, ${\rm d+d}$ and ${\rm ^4He+^4He}$ interactions for future NICA/SPD experiment at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$10 and 20 GeV.

Simulation of charmed particle production in Geant4

It is expected that charmed particles will be copiously produced at Future Circular Collider (FCC). Due to relatively large life-time of the particles, it will be needed to account their interactions with surrounded materials and detector's materials. In order to satisfy the requirements, charmed particle production in soft interactions has been implemented in QGS and FTF models of the Geant4 package. Some details of the implementations are considered in the paper.

Geant4 FTF Model Description of the NA61/SHINE Collaboration Data on Strange Particle's Production in pp Interactions

The latest data by the NA61/SHINE collaboration on inclusive distributions of $K^{*0}$ and $ϕ$ meson's, $Ξ^-$ and $\bar Ξ^+$ hyperon's production in ${\rm pp}$ interactions at $P_{lab}$ from 40 up to 158 GeV/c are considered. As it was shown before in experimental papers, Monte Carlo models -- EPOS 1.99, UrQMD 3.4 and Pythia 6, cannot describe reasonably well the data. In the presented paper, the yields of the particles are analyzed within the Geant4 FTF model. The meson yields are proportional to the probability of strange quark-antiquark pair production from the vacuum, and the probability to form a vector meson at a given quark-anti-quark content -- $P_{Vec}$. Detailed calculations presented in our paper show that a good description of the data can be reached for $P_{Vec}$ = 0.6 for a meson with one strange quark or antiquark. For a meson contained strange quark and strange antiquark, $P_{Vec}$ = 0.7. For a combination of non-strange quark and antiquark, $P_{Vec}$ = 0.5. The description of the $Ξ^-$ and $\bar Ξ^+$ hyperons requires a change of the diquark fragmentation function into hyperons and a special treatment (rearrangement) of fragmentation of anti-diquark -- diquark strings with low masses.

Geant4 FTF model description of the latest data by the NA61/SHINE collaboration on ${\rm ^{40}Ar+{}^{45}Sc}$ interactions

It is shown that the Geant4 FTF model, which does not include the simulation of the hard parton-parton scattering and the formation of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), describes well the NA61/SHINE data on $π^-$ meson distributions for the interactions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.2, 6.1, 7.6 and 8.8 GeV. At higher energies, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 11.9 and 16.8 GeV, the model underestimates the data. This is considered as an indication of the formation of QGP at higher energies in central collisions of light and intermediate nuclei than in collisions of heavy nuclei ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}\sim 6$ GeV).

Offline Software and Computing for the SPD experiment

The SPD (Spin Physics Detector) is a planned spin physics experiment in the second interaction point of the NICA collider that is under construction at JINR. The main goal of the experiment is the test of basic of the QCD via the study of the polarized structure of the nucleon and spin-related phenomena in the collision of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at the center-of-mass energy up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to $10^{32}$ 1/(cm$^2$ s). The data rate at the maximum design luminosity is expected to reach 0.2 Tbit/s. Current approaches to SPD computing and offline software will be presented. The plan of the computing and software R&D in the scope of the SPD TDR preparation will be discussed.

Possible studies at the first stage of the NICA collider operation with polarized and unpolarized proton and deuteron beams

This paper contains suggestions for experiments with usage of the Spin Physics Detector (SPD) at the first stage of the SPD NICA Programme developing at JINR. Double polarized pp-, dd- and pd- collisions at c.m.s. NN energies of 3.4-10 GeV, which will be accessible at the initial stage of experiments, allow one to study spin dependence of the NN interaction, search for multiquark states at double strangeness, charm and beauty thresholds, study the short-range structure of the deuteron. Double polarized pd scattering offer a possibility to test the Standard Model through the search for T-invariance violation.

Simulation of neutron production in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions in Geant4

Studying experimental data obtained at ITEP [1] on neutron production in interactions of protons with various nuclei in the energy range from 747 MeV up to 8.1 GeV, we have found that slow neutron spectra have scaling and asymptotic properties [2]. The spectra weakly depend on the collision energy at momenta of projectile protons larger than 5 - 6 GeV/c. These properties are taken into account in the Geant4 Fritiof (FTF) model. The improved FTF model describes as well as the Geant4 Bertini model the experimental data on neutron production by 1.2 GeV and 1.6 GeV protons on targets (Fe, Pb) [3] and by 3.0 GeV protons on various targets (Al, Fe, Pb) [4]. For neutron production in antiproton-nucleus interactions, it was demonstrated that the FTF results are in a satisfactory agreement with experimental data of the LEAR collaboration [5]. The FTF model gives promising results for neutron production in nucleus - nucleus interactions at projectile energy 1 - 2 GeV per nucleon [6]. The observed properties allow one to predict neutron yields in the nucleus-nucleus interactions at high and very high energies. Predictions for the NICA/MPD experiment at JINR are presented.

Production of strange particles in hadronic interactions

The NA61/SHINE collaboration has recently published high precision data on production of $π^\pm$ and $K^\pm$ mesons, protons, antiprotons and $Λ$ hyperons in ${\rm pp}$ interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c, and in ${\rm pC}$ interactions at 31 GeV/c. The collaboration also presented experimental data on production of particles - $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p^\pm$, $ρ^0$, $ω$ and $K^{*0}$ in $π^-{\rm C}$ collisions at 158 and 350 GeV/c. The collaboration has compared these data with various Monte Carlo model calculations: UrQMD, EPOS, GiBUU, and others. All of the models have various problems. The latest version of the FTF (Fritiof) model of Geant4 solves most of these problems. In the FTF model, we have improved the fragmentation of quark-gluon strings with small masses and introduced dependencies of probabilities of strange mesons and baryon-antibaryon pair's creation on string masses. Due to these changes, we describe the data of the NA61/SHINE collaboration on particle production in ${\rm pp, pC}$, and $π^-{\rm C}$ interactions. The improved Geant4 FTF model also well reproduces experimental data on inclusive cross sections of $Λ, \barΛ$ and $K^{0}$ production in antiproton-proton interactions at various energies. The modified FTF model allows one to simulate realistic processes with two particle productions - $\bar{p}p \rightarrow Λ\barΛ$, $\bar{p}p \rightarrow K^{+} K^{-}$, $\bar{p}p \rightarrow Λ\barΣ$, and $\bar{p}p \rightarrowΣ\barΣ$, which will be studied in the future by the PANDA experiment at FAIR (GSI, Germany).

Study of Azimuthal Correlations in the Target Fragmentation Region in p, d, He, C+C, Ta and C+Ne, Cu Collisions at a Momentum of 4.2, 4.5 and 10 AGeV/c

Azimuthal correlations between the same type of particles (protons or pions) in the target fragmentation region was studied in d, He, C + C, Ta (4.2 AGeV/c), C + Ne, Cu (4.5AGeV/c) and p + C, Ta (10 GeV/c) interactions. The data were obtained from the SKM-200-GIBS streamer chamber and from Propane Bubble Chamber (PBL-500) systems utilized at JINR. Study of multiparticle azimuthal correlations offers unique information about space-time evolution of the interactions. Azimuthal correlations were investigated by using correlation function C($Δϕ$)=dN/d($Δϕ$), where $Δϕ$ represents the angle between the sums of transverse momenta vectors for particles emitted in the forward and backward hemispheres. For protons a "back-to back" ("negative") azimuthal correlations were observed in the above mentioned interactions. The absolute values of the correlation coefficient $|ξ|$ -- the slope parameter of C($Δϕ$), strongly depend on the mass number of the target ($A_T$) nuclei in the nucleon-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. Namely, $|ξ|$ -- decreases with increase of $A_T$ in p+C and p+Ta collisions, while $|ξ|$ decreases from d+C up to C+Ne and then almost does not change with increase of $A_P$, $A_T$ in (d+He)Ta, C+Cu and C+Ta collisions. For pions a "back-to-back" correlations were obtained for a light targets (C, Ne), and a "side-by-side" ("positive") correlations for a heavy targets (Cu, Ta). The $|ξ|$ insignificantly changes with increase of the momenta per nucleon and almost does not change with increase of $A_P$ and $A_T$. Models, used for description of the data -- the Ultra relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamic (UrQMD) and Quark-Gluon String Model (QGSM), satisfactorily describe the obtained experimental results.

Toward simulation of quark and diquark fragmentations in the Quark-Gluon String Model (QGSM)

Within the Quark-Gluon String Model A.B. Kaidalov found a behaviour of quark and diquark fragmentation functions for $z\rightarrow 0$ and $z\rightarrow 1$, and proposed interpolation formulae for the functions in the whole region of $z$. These functions must be a solution of the well-known system of the integral equations. A simplified Monte Carlo estimation of the functions, based on usage of the fragmentation functions at $z\rightarrow 1$ as the kernel functions of the system, does not reproduce Kaidalov's results. An improvement of the Monte Carlo simulations is proposed in this paper. It can be implemented in Monte Carlo event generators such as Los Alamos QGSM, QGSJet-II and the Geant4 QGS model. It will improve a description of experimental data in the models, especially, the description of the latest NA61/SHINE Collaboration data on $π{\rm C}$ interactions. Description of the data is a problem in DPMJet, QGSJet, EPOS and Sibyll models.

Empirical Parameterization of Nucleon-Nucleon Elastic Scattering Amplitude at High Beam Momenta for Glauber Calculations and Monte Carlo Simulations

A parameterization of the nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude is needed for future experiments with nucleon and nuclear beams in the beam momentum range of 2 -- 50 GeV/c/nucleon. There are many parameterizations of the amplitude at $P_{lab} >$ 25--50 GeV/c, and at $P_{lab} \leq$ 5 GeV/c. Our paper is aimed to cover the range between 5 -- 50 GeV/c. The amplitude is used in Glauber calculations of various cross sections and Monte Carlo simulations of nucleon-nucleon scatterings. Usually, the differential nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections are described by an exponential expression. Corresponding experimental data on $pp$ interactions at $|t|>$ 0.005 (GeV/c)$^2$ and $|t|\leq$ 0.125 (GeV/c)$^2$ have been fit. We propose formulae to approximate the beam momentum dependence of these parameters in the momentum range considered. The same was done for $np$ interactions at $|t|\leq$ 0.5 (GeV/c)$^2$. Expressions for the momentum dependence of the total and elastic cross sections, and the ratio of real to imaginary parts of the amplitude at zero momentum transfer are also given for $pp$ and $np$ collisions. These results are sufficient for a first approximation of the Glauber calculations. For more exact calculations we fit the data at $|t|>$ 0.005 (GeV/c)$^2$ without restrictions on the maximum value of $|t|$ using an expression based on two coherent exponential. The parameters of the fits are found for the beam momentum range 2 -- 50 GeV/c.

Dynamics of Anti-Proton -- Protons and Anti-Proton -- Nucleus Reactions

A short review of simulation results of anti-proton-proton and anti-proton-nucleus interactions within the framework of Geant4 FTF (Fritiof) model is presented. The model uses the main assumptions of the Quark-Gluon-String Model or Dual Parton Model. The model assumes production and fragmentation of quark-anti-quark and diquark-anti-diquark strings in the mentioned interactions. Key ingredients of the model are cross sections of string creation processes and an usage of the LUND string fragmentation algorithm. They allow one to satisfactory describe a large set of experimental data, especially, a strange particle production, Lambda hyperons and K mesons.

Study of collective flows of protons and $π^{-}$ -mesons in p(C, Ta) and He(Li, C) collisions at momenta of 4.2, 4.5 and 10 AGeV/c

Collective flows of protons and $π^{-}$-mesons are studied at the momenta of 4.2, 4.5 and 10 AGeV/c for p(C, Ta) and He(Li, C) interactions. The data were obtained from the streamer chamber (SKM-200-GIBS) and from the Propane Bubble Chamber (PBC-500) systems utilized at JINR. The method of Danielewicz and Odyniec has been employed in determining the directed transverse flow of particles. The values of the transverse flow parameter and the strength of the anisotropic emission were defined for each interacting nuclear pair. It is found that the directed flows of protons and pions decrease with increase of the energy and the mass numbers of colliding nucleus pairs. The $π^{-}$-meson and proton flows exhibit opposite directions in all studied interactions, and the flows of protons are directed in the reaction plane. The Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamical Model (UrQMD), enlarged by the Statistical Multi-fragmentation Model (SMM), satisfactorily describes obtained experimental results.

The effect of uu diquark suppression in proton splitting in Monte Carlo event generators

Monte Carlo event generators assume that protons split into (uu)-diquarks and d-quarks with a probability of 1/3 in strong interactions. It is shown in this paper that using a value of 1/6 for the probability allows one to describe at a semi-quantitative level the NA49 Collaboration data for $p+p\rightarrow p+X$ reactions at 158 GeV/c. The Fritiof (FTF) model of Geant4 was used to simulate the reactions. The reduced weight of the (uu)-diquarks in protons is expected in the instanton model.

Improved Systematic of pp Elastic Scattering Data

Unified systematic of elastic scattering data (USESD) proposed by the authors (arxiv:1111.4984 [hep-ph]) is based on symmetrized 2-dimensional Fermi distribution for pp elastic scattering amplitude in the impact parameter representation. It allows to describe differential cross sections of the reactions up to |t| ~ 1.75 (GeV/c)$^2$. To extend it to higher |t| values we consider a two coherent exponential parametrization of the cross sections and show that it cannot describe the cross sections at small |t| at $P_{lab}>$ 10 GeV/c. We extract a description of high |t| region from the parameterization and couple it with USESD. As a result, we obtained a good description of all pp elastic scattering data at $P_{lab}>$ 10 GeV/c. It can be easily used in Glauber Monte Carlo codes for calculations of nucleus-nucleus interaction properties.

Description of the Totem experimental data on elastic pp-scattering at sqrt(s)=7 TeV in the framework of unified systematic of elastic scattering data

An unified systematic of elastic (anti)proton-proton scattering data is proposed based on a simple expression for the process amplitude - f(q)=A[(πdq)/sh(πdq)][i J_1(Rq)/(Rq)+ρJ_0(Rq)]. The parameters R and d are obtained at a fitting of (anti)proton-proton experimental data on differential cross sections from Plab=1 GeV/c up to ISR energies. The fitting gives extra-ordinary good results, χ^2/NoF ~ 1 of below at |t|< 1.75 (GeV/c)^2. An extrapolation of the parameter's energy dependencies to the LHC energies allows excellent description of the Totem data up to the second diffraction maximum. Predictions for other LHC energies are presented also. The amplitude provides one with parameterizations of total and elastic cross sections. Its impact parameter representation corresponds to the 2-dimensional Fermi-function - 1/[1+exp((b-R)/d)], which is very useful for Glauber calculations of nucleus-nucleus cross sections at super high energies. It is shown for the first time that experimental high |t| elastic scattering has a weak energy dependency. This allows to describe high |t| tail of the Totem data.

Simulation of Light Antinucleus-Nucleus Interactions

Creations of light anti-nuclei (anti-deuterium, anti-tritium, anti-He3 and anti-He4) are observed by collaborations at the LHC and RHIC accelerators. Some cosmic ray experiments are aimed to find the anti-nuclei in cosmic rays. To support the experimental studies of the anti-nuclei a Monte Carlo simulation of anti-nuclei interactions with matter is implemented in the Geant4 toolkit. The implementation combines practically all known theoretical approaches to the problem of antinucleon-nucleon interactions.

Parametrization of the $\bar PP$ Elastic Scattering Differential Cross Section Between 2 GeV/c $\leq P_{lab}\leq$ 16 GeV/c

A parameterization of the $\bar pp$ differential elastic scattering cross section in the beam momentum range from 2 to 16 GeV/c is proposed. The parameterization well describes the existing data including the observed diffraction pattern at four-momentum transfer $|t|$ up to 1.5-2.0 GeV$^2$. It can be used for detailed calculations of the radiation load on the detectors being designed for the PANDA detector at the future FAIR facility in Darmstadt.
