Proximity effect in granular superconductor-normal metal structures

We fabricated three-dimensional disordered Pb-Cu granular structures, with various metal compositions. The typical grain size of both metals is smaller than the superconductor and normal metal coherence lengths, thus satisfying the Cooper limit. The critical temperature of the samples was measured and compared with the critical temperature of bilayers. We show how the proximity effect theories, developed for bilayers, can be modified for random mixtures and we demonstrate that our experimental data fit well the de Gennes weak coupling limit theory in the Cooper limit. Our results indicate that, in granular structures, the Cooper limit can be satisfied over a wide range of concentrations.

Correlation between the Extraordinary Hall Effect and Resistivity

We study the contribution of different types of scattering sources to the extraordinary Hall effect. Scattering by magnetic nano-particles embedded in normal-metal matrix, insulating impurities in magnetic matrix, surface scattering and temperature dependent scattering are experimentally tested. Our new data, as well as previously published results on a variety of materials, are fairly interpreted by a simple modification of the skew scattering model.

The Weyl-Lanczos Equations and the Lanczos Wave Equation in 4 Dimensions as Systems in Involution

Using the work by Bampi and Caviglia, we write the Weyl-Lanczos equations as an exterior differential system. Using Janet-Riquier theory, we compute the Cartan characters for all spacetimes with a diagonal metric and for the plane wave spacetime since all spacetimes have a plane wave limit. We write the Lanczos wave equation as an exterior differential system and, with assistance from Janet-Riquier theory, we find that it forms a system in involution. This result can be derived from the scalar wave equation itself. We compute its Cartan characters and compare them with those of the Weyl-Lanczos equations.

Order parameter node removal in the d-wave superconductor $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ under magnetic field

hether the node in the order parameter characteristic of a $d-wave$ superconductor can or cannot be removed by an applied magnetic field has been a subject of debate in recent years. Thermal conductivity results on the high Tc superconductor $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}$ originally explained by Laughlin in terms of such a node removal were complicated by hysteresis effects, and judged inconclusive. We present new tunneling data on $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ that support the existence of the node removal effect, under specific orientations of the sample's surfaces and magnetic field. We also explain the hysteretic behavior and other previous tunneling results so far not understood satisfactorily, attributing them to a combination of node removal and Doppler shift of low energy surface bound states.

Magnetoconductivity of icosahedral and amorphous Al-Pd-Re films - a comparison

The magnetoconductivity of quasicrystals is often discussed in the frame of quantum corrections, namely weak (anti-) localiza-tion and electron-electron interaction. A premise for both effects is a strong elastic scattering of conduction electrons. Amorphous and icosahedral phases are discussed as Hume-Rothery alloys with an electronically induced structural peak at the diameter of the Fermi sphere. Therefore, both should exhibit quantum corrections. The preparation of quasicrystalline films via the amorphous route offers the possibility to compare the magnetoconductivity on samples of identical composition but different structure. We report on magnetoconduc-tivity measurements at temperatures between 0.2 K and 22 K and for magnetic fields up to 16 T. With the exception of the electronic diffusion constant, amorphous as well as icosahedral Al-Pd-Re films can be described by nearly the same set of parameters if the samples are well on the metallic side of the metal-insulator transition.
