Symmetry properties of pair correlations in heavy deformed nuclei

Nucleons are known to form pairing correlations with various types of spin-symmetries. Spin-singlet neutron-neutron and proton-proton pairing is abundant in the nuclear chart but spin-triplet and mixed-spin proton-neutron pairing correlations have also been predicted to form at least in the ground states of certain nuclei. A realistic candidate region is that of the lightest Lanthanides where it was recently demonstrated that the nuclear deformation expected to emerge enhances spin-triplet pairing correlations. In this paper we provide the details of the deformed multimodal Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov theory that lead to this conclusion, as well as the details of the effects identified. We present in detail the response of different pairing correlations to various deformation modes and calculate their signatures in the odd-even staggering of masses. This paper provides a detailed discussion, and some resolutions, on the long-standing question ``what is the effect of nuclear deformation on the various pairing correlations?''

Spin-Triplet Pairing in Heavy Nuclei is Stable Against Deformation

Any experimental evidence of nucleons paired in spin-triplet states will confirm the existence of an exotic phase of nuclear matter. This type of nuclear superfluidity has been hypothesized in heavy nuclei, where the antagonizing spin-orbit effects are damped, and there it oftentimes coexists with traditional spin-singlet pairing, leading to the possibility of mixed-spin pairing. Realistic nuclear deformation, not considered in such studies, could make-or-break these proposals, since its effect on triplet-pairing, and the competition (and coexistence) of the two superfluid phases, was expected to be crucial. We report on a thorough study on the effect of deformation on triplet-, singlet-, and mixed-spin pairing in the relevant region of the nuclear chart. We find that, at low isospin asymmetries, spin-triplet pairing is enhanced by deformation, while below the proton-drip line, the novel superfluid phase survives alongside the usual spin-singlet pairing. These results suggest that spin-triplet superfluidity exists in realistic nuclei and can be probed in the lab.

The $^1$S$_0$ pairing gap in neutron matter

We report ab initio calculations of the S wave pairing gap in neutron matter calculated using realistic nuclear Hamiltonians that include two- and three-body interactions. We use a trial state, properly optimized to capture the essential pairing correlations, from which we extract ground state properties by means of auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo simulations. We extrapolate our results to the thermodynamic limit by studying the finite-size effects in the symmetry-restored projected Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (PBCS) theory and compare our results to other ab initio studies done in the past. Our quantum Monte Carlo results for the pairing gap show a modest suppression with respect to the mean-field BCS values. These results can be connected to cold atom experiments, via the unitarity regime where fermionic superfluidity assumes a unified description, and they are important in the prediction of thermal properties and the cooling of neutron stars.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei with local chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions

Local chiral effective field theory interactions have recently been developed and used in the context of quantum Monte Carlo few- and many-body methods for nuclear physics. In this work, we go over detailed features of local chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions and examine their effect on properties of the deuteron, paying special attention to the perturbativeness of the expansion. We then turn to three-nucleon interactions, focusing on operator ambiguities and their interplay with regulator effects. We then discuss the nuclear Green's function Monte Carlo method, going over both wave-function correlations and approximations for the two- and three-body propagators. Following this, we present a range of results on light nuclei: Binding energies and distribution functions are contrasted and compared, starting from several different microscopic interactions.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of two neutrons in finite volume

Ab initio calculations provide direct access to the properties of pure neutron systems that are challenging to study experimentally. In addition to their importance for fundamental physics, their properties are required as input for effective field theories of the strong interaction. In this work, we perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations of the ground and first excited state of two neutrons in a finite box, considering a simple contact potential as well as chiral effective field theory interactions. We compare the results against exact diagonalizations and present a detailed analysis of the finite-volume effects, whose understanding is crucial for determining observables from the calculated energies. Using the Lüscher formula, we extract the low-energy S-wave scattering parameters from ground- and excited-state energies for different box sizes.

Chiral Three-Nucleon Interactions in Light Nuclei, Neutron-$α$ Scattering, and Neutron Matter

We present quantum Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei, neutron-$α$ scattering, and neutron matter using local two- and three-nucleon ($3N$) interactions derived from chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). The two undetermined $3N$ low-energy couplings are fit to the $^4$He binding energy and, for the first time, to the spin-orbit splitting in the neutron-$α$ $P$-wave phase shifts. Furthermore, we investigate different choices of local $3N$-operator structures and find that chiral interactions at N$^2$LO are able to simultaneously reproduce the properties of $A=3,4,5$ systems and of neutron matter, in contrast to commonly used phenomenological $3N$ interactions.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of neutron matter with chiral three-body forces

Chiral effective field theory (EFT) enables a systematic description of low-energy hadronic interactions with controlled theoretical uncertainties. For strongly interacting systems, quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods provide some of the most accurate solutions, but they require as input local potentials. We have recently constructed local chiral nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). Chiral EFT naturally predicts consistent many-body forces. In this paper, we consider the leading chiral three-nucleon (3N) interactions in local form. These are included in auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) simulations. We present results for the equation of state of neutron matter and for the energies and radii of neutron drops. In particular, we study the regulator dependence at the Hartree-Fock level and in AFDMC and find that present local regulators lead to less repulsion from 3N forces compared to the usual nonlocal regulators.

Pairing and superfluidity of nucleons in neutron stars

We survey the current status of understanding of pairing and superfluidity of neutrons and protons in neutron stars from a theoretical perspective, with emphasis on basic physical properties. During the past two decades, the blossoming of the field of ultracold atomic gases and the development of quantum Monte Carlo methods for solving the many-body problem have been two important sources of inspiration, and we shall describe how these have given insight into neutron pairing gaps. The equilibrium properties and collective oscillations of the inner crust of neutron stars, where neutrons paired in a $^1$S$_0$ state coexist with a lattice of neutron-rich nuclei, are also described. While pairing gaps are well understood at densities less than one tenth of the nuclear saturation density, significant uncertainties exist at higher densities due to the complicated nature of nucleon-nucleon interactions, the difficulty of solving the many-body problem under these conditions, and the increasing importance of many-nucleon interactions. We also touch more briefly on the subject of pairing of neutrons in other angular momentum states, specifically the $^3$P$_2$ state, as well as pairing of protons.

Local chiral effective field theory interactions and quantum Monte Carlo applications

We present details of the derivation of local chiral effective field theory interactions to next-to-next-to-leading order, and show results for nucleon-nucleon phase shifts and deuteron properties for these potentials. We then perform systematic auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for neutron matter based on the developed local chiral potentials at different orders. This includes studies of the effects of the spectral-function regularization and of the local regulators. For all orders, we compare the quantum Monte Carlo results with perturbative many-body calculations and find excellent agreement for low cutoffs.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Light Nuclei Using Chiral Potentials

We present the first Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei with nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order. Up to this order, the interactions can be constructed in a local form and are therefore amenable to quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We demonstrate a systematic improvement with each order for the binding energies of $A=3$ and $A=4$ systems. We also carry out the first few-body tests to study perturbative expansions of chiral potentials at different orders, finding that higher-order corrections are more perturbative for softer interactions. Our results confirm the necessity of a three-body force for correct reproduction of experimental binding energies and radii, and pave the way for studying few- and many-nucleon systems using quantum Monte Carlo methods with chiral interactions.

The neutron polaron as a constraint on nuclear density functionals

We study the energy of an impurity (polaron) that interacts strongly in a sea of fermions when the effective range of the impurity-fermion interaction becomes important, thereby mapping the Fermi polaron of condensed matter physics and ultracold atoms to strongly interacting neutrons. We present Quantum Monte Carlo results for this neutron polaron, and compare these with effective field theory calculations that also include contributions beyond the effective range. We show that state-of-the-art nuclear density functionals vary substantially and generally underestimate the neutron polaron energy. Our results thus provide constraints for adjusting the time-odd components of nuclear density functionals to better characterize polarized systems.

Neutron matter with chiral EFT interactions: Perturbative and first QMC calculations

Neutron matter presents a unique system in chiral effective field theory (EFT), because all many-body forces among neutrons are predicted to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO). We discuss perturbative and first Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of neutron matter with chiral EFT interactions and their astrophysical impact for the equation of state and neutron stars.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations with Chiral Effective Field Theory Interactions

We present the first quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations with chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions. To achieve this, we remove all sources of nonlocality, which hamper the inclusion in QMC calculations, in nuclear forces to next-to-next-to-leading order. We perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) calculations for the neutron matter energy up to saturation density based on local leading-order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results exhibit a systematic order-by-order convergence in chiral EFT and provide nonperturbative benchmarks with theoretical uncertainties. For the softer interactions, perturbative calculations are in excellent agreement with the AFDMC results. This work paves the way for QMC calculations with systematic chiral EFT interactions for nuclei and nuclear matter, for testing the perturbativeness of different orders, and allows for matching to lattice QCD results by varying the pion mass.

Superfluid Pairing in Neutrons and Cold Atoms

Ultracold atomic gases and low-density neutron matter are unique in that they exhibit pairing gaps comparable to the Fermi energy which in this sense are the largest in the laboratory and in nature, respectively. This strong pairing regime, or the crossover between BCS and BEC regimes, requires non-perturbative treatments. We describe Quantum Monte Carlo results useful to understand the properties of these systems, including infinite homogeneous matter and trapped inhomogeneous gases.
