Large Interferometer For Exoplanets (LIFE): I. Improved exoplanet detection yield estimates for a large mid-infrared space-interferometer mission

One of the long-term goals of exoplanet science is the atmospheric characterization of dozens of small exoplanets in order to understand their diversity and search for habitable worlds and potential biosignatures. Achieving this goal requires a space mission of sufficient scale. We seek to quantify the exoplanet detection performance of a space-based mid-infrared nulling interferometer that measures the thermal emission of exoplanets. For this, we have developed an instrument simulator that considers all major astrophysical noise sources and coupled it with Monte Carlo simulations of a synthetic exoplanet population around main-sequence stars within 20 pc. This allows us to quantify the number (and types) of exoplanets that our mission concept could detect over a certain time period. Two different scenarios to distribute the observing time among the stellar targets are discussed and different apertures sizes and wavelength ranges are considered. Within a 2.5-year initial search phase, an interferometer consisting of four 2 m apertures with a total instrument throughput of 5% covering a wavelength range between 4 and 18.5 $μ$m could detect up to ~550 exoplanets with radii between 0.5 and 6 R$_\oplus$ with an integrated SNR$\ge$7. At least ~160 of the detected exoplanets have radii $\le$1.5 R$_\oplus$. Depending on the observing scenario, ~25-45 rocky exoplanets (objects with radii between 0.5 and 1.5 $_{\oplus}$) orbiting within the empirical habitable zone (eHZ) of their host stars are among the detections. With an aperture size of 3.5 m, the total number of detections can increase to up to ~770, including ~60-80 rocky, eHZ planets. With 1 m aperture size, the maximum detection yield is ~315 exoplanets, including $\le$20 rocky, eHZ planets. In terms of predicted detection yield, such a mission can compete with large single-aperture reflected light missions. (abridged)

On the geometry of Siegel-Jacobi domains

We study the holomorphic unitary representations of the Jacobi group based on Siegel-Jacobi domains. Explicit polynomial orthonormal bases of the Fock spaces based on the Siegel-Jacobi disk are obtained. The scalar holomorphic discrete series of the Jacobi group for the Siegel-Jacobi disk is constructed and polynomial orthonormal bases of the representation spaces are given.

Applications of the Jacobi group to Quantum Mechanics

Infinitesimal holomorphic realizations for the Schrödinger-Weil representation and the discrete series representations of the Jacobi group are constructed. Explicit expressions of the basic differential operators are obtained. The squeezed states for the unitary irreducible representation of the Jacobi group are introduced. Matrix elements of the squeezed operators, expectation values of polynomial operators in infinitesimal generators of the Jacobi group, the squeezing region and a description of Mandel's parameter are presented.

New results for the missing quantum numbers labeling the quadrupole and octupole boson basis

The many $2^k$-pole boson states, $|N_kv_kα_k I_kM_k>$ with $k=2,3$, realize the irreducible representation (IR) for the group reduction chains $SU(2k+1)\supset R_{2k+1}\supset R_3\supset R_2$. They have been analytically studied and widely used for the description of nuclear systems. However, no analytical expression for the degeneracy $d_v(I)$ of the $R_{2k+1}$'s IR, determined by the reduction $R_{2k+1}\supset R_3$, is available. Thus, the number of distinct values taken by $α_k$ has been so far obtained by solving some complex equations. Here we derive analytical expressions for the degeneracy $d_v(I)$ characterizing the octupole and quadrupole boson states, respectively. The merit of this work consists of the fact that it completes the analytical expressions for the $2^k$-pole boson basis.

Linear Hamiltonians on homogeneous Kähler manifolds of coherent states

Representations of coherent state Lie algebras on coherent state manifolds as first order differential operators are presented. The explicit expressions of the differential action of the generators of semisimple Lie groups determine for linear Hamiltonians in the generators of the groups first order differential equations of motion with holomorphic polynomials coefficients. For hermitian symmetric manifolds the equations of motion are matrix Riccati equations. It is presented the simplest example of the non-symmetric space $SU(3)/S(U(1)\times U(1)\times U(1))$ where the polynomials describing the equations of motion have the maximum degree 3.

Differential operators on orbits of coherent states

We emphasize some properties of coherent state groups, i.e. groups whose quotient with the stationary groups, are manifolds which admit a holomorphic embedding in a projective Hilbert space. We determine the differential action of the generators of the representation of coherent state groups on the symmetric Fock space attached to the dual of the Hilbert space of the representation. This permits a realization by first-order differential operators with holomorphic polynomial coefficients on Kähler coherent state orbits.
