Emergence of the Gambier equation in cosmology

We show how the Gambier equation arises in connection to Friedmann-Lema$\mbox{î}$tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology and a Dark Matter equation of state. Moreover, we provide a correspondence between the Friedmann equations and the Gambier equations that possess the Painlev$\acute{\mbox{e}}$ property in $2+1$ dimensions. We also consider special cases of the Gambier G27 equation such as the generalized Pinney equation. For an extended FLRW model with dynamic scalar field as matter model, the Einstein equations correspond to the Milne-Pinney equation which in turn can be mapped to the parametric Gambier equation of second order.

Cheillini integrability and quadratically damped oscillators

In this paper a new approach to study an equation of the Lienard type with a strong quadratic damping is proposed based on Jacobi's last multiplier and Cheillini's integrability condition. We obtain a closed form solution of the transcendental characteristic equation of the Lienard type equation using the Lambert W-function.

Chiellini integrability condition, planar isochronous systems and Hamiltonian structures of Liénard equation

Using a novel transformation involving the Jacobi Last Multiplier (JLM) we derive an old integrability criterion due to Chiellini for the Liénard equation. By combining the Chiellini condition for integrability and Jacobi's Last Multiplier the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian of the Liénard equation is derived. We also show that the Kukles equation is the only equation in the Liénard family which satisfies both the Chiellini integrability and the Sabatini criterion for isochronicity conditions. In addition we examine this result by mapping the Liénard equation to a harmonic oscillator equation using tacitly Chiellini's condition. Finally we provide a metriplectic and complex Hamiltonian formulation of the Liénard equation through the use of Chiellini condition for integrability.

Generalized damped Milne-Pinney equation and Chiellini method

We adopt the Chiellini integrability method to find the solutions of various generalizations of the damped Milne-Pinney equations. In particular, we find the solution of the damped Ermakov-Painlevé II equation and generalized dissipative Milne-Pinney equation.

On Quantized Lienard Oscillator and Momentum Dependent Mass

We examine the analytical structure of the nonlinear Lienard oscillator and show that it is a bi-Hamiltonian system depending upon the choice of the coupling parameters. While one has been recently studied in the context of a quantized momentum- dependent mass system, the other Hamiltonian also reflects a similar feature in the mass function and also depicts an isotonic character. We solve for such a Hamiltonian and give the complete solution in terms of a confluent hypergeometric function.

Regular and Singular Pulse and Front Solutions and Possible Isochronous Behavior in the Short-Pulse Equation: Phase-Plane, Multi-Infinite Series and Variational Approaches

In this paper we employ three recent analytical approaches to investigate the possible classes of traveling wave solutions of some members of a family of so-called short-pulse equations (SPE). A recent, novel application of phase-plane analysis is first employed to show the existence of breaking kink wave solutions in certain parameter regimes. Secondly, smooth traveling waves are derived using a recent technique to derive convergent multi-infinite series solutions for the homoclinic (heteroclinic) orbits of the traveling-wave equations for the SPE equation, as well as for its generalized version with arbitrary coefficients. These correspond to pulse (kink or shock) solutions respectively of the original PDEs. Unlike the majority of unaccelerated convergent series, high accuracy is attained with relatively few terms. And finally, variational methods are employed to generate families of both regular and embedded solitary wave solutions for the SPE PDE. The technique for obtaining the embedded solitons incorporates several recent generalizations of the usual variational technique and it is thus topical in itself. One unusual feature of the solitary waves derived here is that we are able to obtain them in analytical form (within the assumed ansatz for the trial functions). Thus, a direct error analysis is performed, showing the accuracy of the resulting solitary waves. Given the importance of solitary wave solutions in wave dynamics and information propagation in nonlinear PDEs, as well as the fact that not much is known about solutions of the family of generalized SPE equations considered here, the results obtained are both new and timely.

A generalized non-Hermitian Pais-Uhlenbeck quantum Hamiltonian, its Hermitian equivalence and position-dependent mass correspondence

We explore the Jacobi Last Multiplier as a means for deriving the Lagrangian of a fourth-order differential equation. In particular we consider the classical problem of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator and write down the accompanying Hamiltonian. We then compare such an expression with an alternative derivation of the Hamiltonian that makes use of the Ostrogradski's method and show that a mapping from the one to the other is achievable by variable transformations. Assuming canonical quantization procedure to be valid we go for the operator version of the Hamiltonian that represents a pair of uncoupled oscillators. This motivates us to propose a generalized Pais-Uhlenbeck Hamiltonian in terms of the usual harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators by including terms quadratic and linear in them. Such a Hamiltonian turns out to be essentially non-Hermitian but has an equivalent Hermitian representation which is reducible to a typically position-dependent reduced mass form.

A Lagrangian Description of the Higher-Order Painlevé Equations

We derive the Lagrangians of the higher-order Painlevé equations using Jacobi's last multiplier technique. Some of these higher-order differential equations display certain remarkable properties like passing the Painlevé test and satisfy the conditions stated by Jurá$\check{s}$, (Acta Appl. Math. 66 (2001) 25--39), thus allowing for a Lagrangian description.

On Bäcklund transformations and boundary conditions associated with the quantum inverse problem for a discrete nonlinear integrable system and its connection to Baxter's Q-operator

A discrete nonlinear system is analysed in case of open chain boundary conditions at the ends. It is shown that the integrability of the system remains intact, by obtaining a modified set of Lax equations which automatically take care of the boundary conditions. The same Lax pair also conforms to the conditions stipulated by Sklyanin [5]. The quantum inverse problem is set up and the diagonalisation is carried out by the method of sparation of variables. Bäcklund transformations are then derived under the modified boundary conditions using the classical r-matrix . Finally by quantising the Bäcklund transformation it is possible to identify the relation satisfied by the eigenvalue of Baxter's Q-operator even for the quasi periodic situation.

The effect of interactions on Bose-Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional harmonic trap

A dilute bose gas in a quasi two-dimensional harmonic trap and interacting with a repulsive two-body zero-range potential of fixed coupling constant is considered. Using the Thomas-Fermi method, it is shown to remain in the same uncondensed phase as the temperature is lowered. Its density profile and energy are identical to that of an ideal gas obeying the fractional exclusion statistics of Haldane. PACS: ~03.75.Fi, 05.30.Jp, 67.40.Db, 05.30.-d
