Thermal Breakage and Self-Healing of a Polymer Chain under Tensile Stress

We consider the thermal breakage of a tethered polymer chain of discrete segments coupled by Morse potentials under constant tensile stress. The chain dynamics at the onset of fracture is studied analytically by Kramers-Langer multidimensional theory and by extensive Molecular Dynamics simulations in 1D- and 3D-space. Comparison with simulation data in one- and three dimensions demonstrates that the Kramers-Langer theory provides good qualitative description of the process of bond-scission as caused by a {\em collective} unstable mode. We derive distributions of the probability for scission over the successive bonds along the chain which reveal the influence of chain ends on rupture in good agreement with theory. The breakage time distribution of an individual bond is found to follow an exponential law as predicted by theory. Special attention is focused on the recombination (self-healing) of broken bonds. Theoretically derived expressions for the recombination time and distance distributions comply with MD observations and indicate that the energy barrier position crossing is not a good criterion for true rupture. It is shown that the fraction of self-healing bonds increases with rising temperature and friction.

Study of nuclei in the vicinity of the "Island of Inversion" through fusion-evaporation reaction

We report the first observation of high-spin states in nuclei in the vicinity of the "island of inversion", populated via the 18O+18O fusion reaction at an incident beam energy of 34 MeV. The fusion reaction mechanism circumvents the limitations of non-equilibrated reactions used to populate these nuclei. Detailed spin-parity measurements in these difficult to populate nuclei have been possible from the observed coincidence anisotropy and the linear polarization measurements. The spectroscopy of 33,34P and 33S is presented in detail along with the results of calculations within the shell model framework.

Fine-grained state counting for black holes in loop quantum gravity

A state of a black hole in loop quantum gravity is given by a distribution of spins on punctures on the horizon. The distribution is of the Boltzmann type, with the area playing the role of the energy. In investigations where the total area was kept approximately constant, there was a kind of thermal equilibrium between the spins which have the same analogue temperature and the entropy was proportional to the area. If the area is precisely fixed, however, multiple constraints appear, different spins have different analogue temperatures and the entropy is not strictly linear in the area, but is bounded by a linear rise.

Magnetic Field Induced Instabilities in Localised Two-Dimensional Electron Systems

We report density dependent instabilities in the localised regime of mesoscopic two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) with intermediate strength of background disorder. They are manifested by strong resistance oscillations induced by high perpendicular magnetic fields B_{\perp}. While the amplitude of the oscillations is strongly enhanced with increasing B_{\perp}, their position in density remains unaffected. The observation is accompanied by an unusual behaviour of the temperature dependence of resistance and activation energies. We suggest the interplay between a strongly interacting electron phase and the background disorder as a possible explanation.

Discussion on some characteristics of the Charged Brane-world Black holes

Several physical natures of charged brane-world black holes have been investigated. At first, time-like and null geodesics of the charged brane-world black holes are presented. We also analyze all the possible motions by plotting the effective potentials for various parameters for circular and radial geodesics. Secondly, we investigate the motion of test particles in the gravitational field of charged brane-world black holes using Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) formalism. We have considered charged and uncharged test particles and examine its behavior both in static and non-static cases. Thirdly, thermodynamics of the charged brane-world black holes are studied. Finally, it has been also shown that there is no phenomenon of superradiance for an incident massless scalar field for this black hole.

Low Temperature Transport in Undoped Mesoscopic Structures

Using high quality undoped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures with optically patterned insulation between two layers of gates, it is possible to investigate very low density mesoscopic regions where the number of impurities is well quantified. Signature appearances of the scattering length scale arise in confined two dimensional regions, where the zero-bias anomaly (ZBA) is also observed. These results explicitly outline the molecular beam epitaxy growth parameters necessary to obtain ultra low density large two dimensional regions as well as clean reproducible mesoscopic devices.

A comment on black hole state counting in loop quantum gravity

There are two ways of counting microscopic states of black holes in loop quantum gravity, one counting all allowed spin network labels $j,m$ and the other involving only the labels $m$. Counting states with $|m|=j$, as done in a recent Letter, does not follow either.

Motion of Massive and Massless Test particles in Dyadosphere Geometry

Motion of massive and massless test particle in equilibrium and non-equilibrium case is discussed in a dyadosphere geometry through Hamilton-Jacobi method. Geodesics of particles are discussed through Lagrangian method too. Scalar wave equation for massless particle is analyzed to show the absence of superradiance.

Tunnelling from black holes and tunnelling into white holes

Hawking radiation is nowadays being understood as tunnelling through black hole horizons. Here, the extension of the Hamilton-Jacobi approach to tunnelling for non-rotating and rotating black holes in different non-singular coordinate systems not only confirms this quantum emission from black holes but also reveals the new phenomenon of absorption into white holes by quantum mechanical tunnelling. The role of a boundary condition of total absorption or emission is also clarified.

Low-Temperature Collapse of Electron Localisation in Two Dimensions

We report direct experimental evidence that the insulating phase of a disordered, yet strongly interacting two-dimensional electron system (2DES) becomes unstable at low temperatures. As the temperature decreases, a transition from insulating to metal-like transport behaviour is observed, which persists even when the resistivity of the system greatly exceeds the quantum of resistivity h/e^2. The results have been achieved by measuring transport on a mesoscopic length-scale while systematically varying the strength of disorder.

Field-tunable magnetic phases in a semiconductor-based two-dimensional Kondo lattice

We show the existence of intrinsic localized spins in mesoscopic high-mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. Non-equilibrium transport spectroscopy reveals a quasi-regular distribution of the spins, and indicates that the spins interact indirectly via the conduction electrons. The interaction between spins manifests in characteristic zero-bias anomaly near the Fermi energy, and indicates gate voltage-controllable magnetic phases in high-mobility heterostructures. To address this issue further, we have also designed electrostatically tunable Hall devices, that allow a probing of Hall characteristics at the active region of the mesoscopic devices. We show that the zero field Hall coefficient has an anomalous contribution, which can be attributed to scattering by the localized spins. The anomalous contribution can be destroyed by an increase in temperature, source drain bias, or field range.

Sensitivity of the magnetic state of a spin lattice on itinerant electron orbital phase

Spatially extended localized spins can interact via indirect exchange interaction through Friedel oscillations in the Fermi sea. In arrays of localized spins such interaction can lead to a magnetically ordered phase. Without external magnetic field such a phase is well understood via a "two-impurity" Kondo model. Here we employ non-equilibrium transport spectroscopy to investigate the role of the orbital phase of conduction electrons on the magnetic state of a spin lattice. We show experimentally, that even tiniest perpendicular magnetic field can influence the magnitude of the inter-spin magnetic exchange.

Does phantom energy produce black hole?

We have found an exact solution of spherically symmetrical Einstein equations describing a black hole with a special type phantom energy source. It is surprising to note that our solution is analogous to Reissner-Nordström black hole.

Lyra black holes

Long ago, since 1951, Lyra proposed a modification of Riemannian geometry. Based on the Lyra's modification on Riemannian geometry, Sen and Dunn constructed a field equation which is analogous to Einstein's field equations. Further more, Sen and Dunn gave series type solution to the static vacuum field equations. Retaining only a few terms, we have shown that their solutions correspond to black holes (we call, Lyra black holes). Some interesting properties of the Lyra black holes are studied.

Wormhole with varying cosmological constant

It has been suggested that the cosmological constant is a variable dynamical quantity. A class of solution has been presented for the spherically symmetric space time describing wormholes by assuming the erstwhile cosmological constant $Λ$ to be a space variable scalar, viz., $Λ$ = $Λ(r) $ . It is shown that the Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) violating exotic matter can be made arbitrarily small.

Counting black hole microscopic states in loop quantum gravity

Counting of microscopic states of black holes is performed within the framework of loop quantum gravity. This is the first calculation of the pure horizon states using statistical methods, which reveals the possibility of additional states missed in the earlier calculations, leading to an increase of entropy. Also for the first time a microcanonical temperature is introduced within the framework.

Counting of Black Hole Microstates

The entropy of a black hole can be obtained by counting states in loop quantum gravity. The dominant term depends on the Immirzi parameter involved in the quantization and is proportional to the area of the horizon, while there is a logarithmic correction with coefficient -1/2.
