Generation of axisymmetric modes in cylindrical kinematic mean-field dynamos of VKS type

In an attempt to understand why the dominating magnetic field observed in the von-Kármán-Sodium (VKS) dynamo experiment is axisymmetric, we investigate in the present paper the ability of mean field models to generate axisymmetric eigenmodes in cylindrical geometries. An $α$-effect is added to the induction equation and we identify reasonable and necessary properties of the $α$ distribution so that axisymmetric eigenmodes are generated. The parametric study is done with two different simulation codes. We find that simple distributions of $α$-effect, either concentrated in the disk neighbourhood or occupying the bulk of the flow, require unrealistically large values of the parameter $α$ to explain the VKS observations.

Oscillating α^2-dynamos and the reversal phenomenon of the global geodynamo

A geodynamo-model based on an α-effect which has been computed under conditions suitable for the geodynamo is constructed. For a highly restricted class of radial α-profiles the linear \alpha2-model exhibits oscillating solutions on a timescale given by the turbulent diffusion time. The basic properties of the periodic solutions are presented and the influence of the inner core size on the characteristics of the critical range that allows for oscillating solutions is shown. Reversals are interpreted as half of such an oscillation. They are rather seldom events because they can only occur if the α-profile exists long enough within the small critical range that allows for periodic solutions. Due to strong fluctuations on the convective timescale the probability of such a reversal is very small. Finally, a simple non-linear mean-field model with reasonable input parameters based on simulations of Giesecke et al. (2005) demonstrates the plausibility of the presented theory with a long-time series of a (geo-)dynamo reversal sequence.

Geodynamo alpha-effect derived from box simulations of rotating magnetoconvection

The equations for fully compressible rotating magnetoconvection are numerically solved in a Cartesian box assuming conditions roughly suitable for the geodynamo. The mean electromotive force describing the generation of mean magnetic flux by convective turbulence in the rotating fluid is directly calculated from the simulations, and the corresponding alpha-coefficients are derived. Due to the very weak density stratification the alpha-effect changes its sign in the middle of the box. It is positive at the top and negative at the bottom of the convection zone. For strong magnetic fields we also find a clear downward advection of the mean magnetic field. Both of the simulated effects have been predicted by quasi-linear computations (Soward, 1979; Kitchatinov and Ruediger, 1992). Finally, the possible connection of the obtained profiles of the EMF with mean-field models of oscillating alpha^2-dynamos is discussed.
