Statistics of Deep Energy States in Coulomb Glasses

We study the statistics of local energy minima in the configuration space and the energy relaxation due to activated hopping in a system of interacting electrons in a random environment. The distribution of the local minima is exponential, which is in agreement with extreme value statistics considerations. The relaxation of the system energy shows logarithmic time dependence reflecting the ultrametric structure of the system.

Transport properties of semiconducting nanocrystal arrays at low temperatures

We study the electron transport in semiconducting nanocrystal arrays at temperatures $T\ll E_c$, where $E_c$ is the charging energy for a single grain. In this temperature range the electron transport is dominated by co-tunneling processes. We discuss both elastic and inelastic co-tunneling and show that for semiconducting nanocrystal arrays the inelastic contribution is strongly suppressed at low temperatures. We also compare our results with available experimental data.

Models for the magnetic ac susceptibility of granular superferromagnetic CoFe/Al$_2$O$_3$

The magnetization and magnetic ac susceptibility, $χ= χ' - i χ''$, of superferromagnetic systems are studied by numerical simulations. The Cole-Cole plot, $χ''$ vs. $χ'$, is used as a tool for classifying magnetic systems by their dynamical behavior. The simulations of the magnetization hysteresis and the ac susceptibility are performed with two approaches for a driven domain wall in random media. The studies are motivated by recent experimental results on the interacting nanoparticle system Co$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ showing superferromagnetic behavior. Its Cole-Cole plot indicates domain wall motion dynamics similarly to a disordered ferromagnet, including pinning and sliding motion. With our models we can successfully reproduce the features found in the experimental Cole-Cole plots.

Domain Wall Depinning in Random Media by AC Fields

The viscous motion of an interface driven by an ac external field of frequency omega_0 in a random medium is considered here for the first time. The velocity exhibits a smeared depinning transition showing a double hysteresis which is absent in the adiabatic case omega_0 --> 0. Using scaling arguments and an approximate renormalization group calculation we explain the main characteristics of the hysteresis loop. In the low frequency limit these can be expressed in terms of the depinning threshold and the critical exponents of the adiabatic case.
