The PROSPECT Reactor Antineutrino Experiment

The Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment, PROSPECT, is designed to make both a precise measurement of the antineutrino spectrum from a highly-enriched uranium reactor and to probe eV-scale sterile neutrinos by searching for neutrino oscillations over meter-long baselines. PROSPECT utilizes a segmented $^6$Li-doped liquid scintillator detector for both efficient detection of reactor antineutrinos through the inverse beta decay reaction and excellent background discrimination. PROSPECT is a movable 4-ton antineutrino detector covering distances of 7m to 13m from the High Flux Isotope Reactor core. It will probe the best-fit point of the $\barν_e$ disappearance experiments at 4$σ$ in 1 year and the favored regions of the sterile neutrino parameter space at more than 3$σ$ in 3 years. PROSPECT will test the origin of spectral deviations observed in recent $θ_{13}$ experiments, search for sterile neutrinos, and address the hypothesis of sterile neutrinos as an explanation of the reactor anomaly. This paper describes the design, construction, and commissioning of PROSPECT and reports first data characterizing the performance of the PROSPECT antineutrino detector.

Multi-particle azimuthal correlations for extracting event-by-event elliptic and triangular flow in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

We present measurements of elliptic and triangular azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles detected at forward rapidity $1<|η|<3$ in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, as a function of centrality. The multiparticle cumulant technique is used to obtain the elliptic flow coefficients $v_2\{2\}$, $v_2\{4\}$, $v_2\{6\}$, and $v_2\{8\}$, and triangular flow coefficients $v_3\{2\}$ and $v_3\{4\}$. Using the small-variance limit, we estimate the mean and variance of the event-by-event $v_2$ distribution from $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$. In a complementary analysis, we also use a folding procedure to study the distributions of $v_2$ and $v_3$ directly, extracting both the mean and variance. Implications for initial geometrical fluctuations and their translation into the final state momentum distributions are discussed.

Fissile material detection using neutron time-correlations from photofission

The detection of special nuclear materials (SNM) in commercial cargoes is a major objective in the field of nuclear security. In this work we investigate the use of two-neutron time-correlations from photo-fission using the Prompt Neutrons from Photofission (PNPF) detectors in Passport Systems Inc.'s (PSI) Shielded Nuclear Alarm Resolution (SNAR) platform~\cite{pnpf} for the purpose of detecting $\sim$5~kg quantities of fissionable materials in seconds. The goal of this effort was to extend the secondary scan mode of this system to differentiate fissile materials, such as highly enriched uranium, from fissionable materials, such as low enriched and depleted uranium (LEU and DU). Experiments were performed using a variety of material samples, and data were analyzed using the variance-over-mean technique referred to as $Y_{2F}$ or Feynman-$α$. Results were compared to computational models to improve our ability to predict system performance for distinguishing fissile materials. Simulations were then combined with empirical formulas to generate receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves for a variety of shielding scenarios. We show that a 10 second screening with a 200~$μ$A 9~MeV X-ray beam is sufficient to differentiate kilogram quantities of HEU from DU in various shielding scenarios in a standard cargo container.

Production of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons in Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV

Production of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons has been measured at midrapidity in Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV. Measurements were performed in $π^0(η)\rightarrowγγ$ decay channel in the 1(2)-20 GeV/$c$ transverse momentum range. A strong suppression is observed for $π^0$ and $η$ meson production at high transverse momentum in central Cu$+$Au collisions relative to the $p$$+$$p$ results scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. In central collisions the suppression is similar to Au$+$Au with comparable nuclear overlap. The $η/π^0$ ratio measured as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with $m_T$-scaling parameterization down to $p_T=$2 GeV/$c$, its asymptotic value is constant and consistent with Au$+$Au and $p$$+$$p$ and does not show any significant dependence on collision centrality. Similar results were obtained in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as in $e^+e^-$ collisions in a range of collision energies $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=$3--1800 GeV. This suggests that the quark-gluon-plasma medium produced in Cu$+$Cu collisions either does not affect the jet fragmentation into light mesons or it affects the $π^0$ and $η$ the same way.

Pseudorapidity dependence of particle production and elliptic flow in asymmetric nuclear collisions of $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

Asymmetric nuclear collisions of $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV provide an excellent laboratory for understanding particle production, as well as exploring interactions among these particles after their initial creation in the collision. We present measurements of charged hadron production $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ in all such collision systems over a broad pseudorapidity range and as a function of collision multiplicity. A simple wounded quark model is remarkably successful at describing the full data set. We also measure the elliptic flow $v_{2}$ over a similarly broad pseudorapidity range. These measurements provide key constraints on models of particle emission and their translation into flow.

Measurement of $ϕ$-meson production at forward rapidity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=510 GeV and energy dependence of $σ_ϕ$ from $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV to 7 TeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the differential cross section of $ϕ$(1020)-meson production at forward rapidity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$510 GeV via the dimuon decay channel. The partial cross section in the rapidity and $p_T$ ranges $1.2<|y|<2.2$ and $2<p_T<7$ GeV/$c$ is $σ_ϕ=[2.28 \pm 0.09\,{\rm (stat)} \pm 0.14\,{\rm (syst)} \pm 0.27\, {\rm (norm)}] \times 10^{-2}$~mb. The energy dependence of $σ_ϕ$ ($1.2<|y|<2.2, \; 2<p_T<5$ GeV/$c$) is studied using the PHENIX measurements at $\sqrt{s}=$200 and 510 GeV and the Large-Hadron-Collider measurements at $\sqrt{s}=$2.76 and 7 TeV. The experimental results are compared to various event generator predictions ({\sc pythia6, pythia8, phojet, ampt, epos3,} and {\sc epos-lhc}).

First search for short-baseline neutrino oscillations at HFIR with PROSPECT

This Letter reports the first scientific results from the observation of antineutrinos emitted by fission products of $^{235}$U at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. PROSPECT, the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment, consists of a segmented 4 ton $^6$Li-doped liquid scintillator detector covering a baseline range of 7-9 m from the reactor and operating under less than 1 meter water equivalent overburden. Data collected during 33 live-days of reactor operation at a nominal power of 85 MW yields a detection of 25461 $\pm$ 283 (stat.) inverse beta decays. Observation of reactor antineutrinos can be achieved in PROSPECT at 5$σ$ statistical significance within two hours of on-surface reactor-on data-taking. A reactor-model independent analysis of the inverse beta decay prompt energy spectrum as a function of baseline constrains significant portions of the previously allowed sterile neutrino oscillation parameter space at 95% confidence level and disfavors the best fit of the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly at 2.2$σ$ confidence level.

Measurements of mass-dependent azimuthal anisotropy in central $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

We present measurements of the transverse-momentum dependence of elliptic flow $v_2$ for identified pions and (anti)protons at midrapidity ($|η|<0.35$), in 0%--5% central $p$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. When taken together with previously published measurements in $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, the results cover a broad range of small-collision-system multiplicities and intrinsic initial geometries. We observe a clear mass-dependent splitting of $v_2(p_{T})$ in $d$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions, just as in large nucleus-nucleus ($A$$+$$A$) collisions, and a smaller splitting in $p$$+$Au collisions. Both hydrodynamic and transport model calculations successfully describe the data at low $p_T$ ($< 1.5$ GeV/$c$), but fail to describe various features at higher $p_T$. In all systems, the $v_2$ values follow an approximate quark-number scaling as a function of the hadron transverse kinetic energy per constituent quark($KE_T/n_q$), which was also seen previously in $A$$+$$A$ collisions.

Angular decay coefficients of $J/ψ$ mesons at forward rapidity from $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV

We report the first measurement of the full angular distribution for inclusive $J/ψ\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. The measurements are made for $J/ψ$ transverse momentum $2<p_{T}<10$ GeV/$c$ and rapidity $1.2<y<2.2$ in the Helicity, Collins-Soper, and Gottfried-Jackson reference frames. In all frames the polar coefficient $λ_θ$ is strongly negative at low $p_{T}$ and becomes close to zero at high $p_{T}$, while the azimuthal coefficient $λ_ϕ$ is close to zero at low $p_{T}$, and becomes slightly negative at higher $p_{T}$. The frame-independent coefficient $\tildeλ$ is strongly negative at all $p_{T}$ in all frames. The data are compared to the theoretical predictions provided by nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics models.

Measurement of the relative yields of $ψ(2S)$ to $ψ(1S)$ mesons produced at forward and backward rapidity in $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

The PHENIX Collaboration has measured the ratio of the yields of $ψ(2S)$ to $ψ(1S)$ mesons produced in $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV over the forward and backward rapidity intervals $1.2<|y|<2.2$. We find that the ratio in $p$$+$$p$ collisions is consistent with measurements at other collision energies. In collisions with nuclei, we find that in the forward ($p$-going or $^{3}$He-going) direction, the relative yield of $ψ(2S)$ mesons to $ψ(1S)$ mesons is consistent with the value measured in \pp collisions. However, in the backward (nucleus-going) direction, the $ψ(2S)$ is preferentially suppressed by a factor of $\sim$2. This suppression is attributed in some models to breakup of the weakly-bound $ψ(2S)$ through final state interactions with comoving particles, which have a higher density in the nucleus-going direction. These breakup effects may compete with color screening in a deconfined quark-gluon plasma to produce sequential suppression of excited quarkonia states.

Measurements of double-helicity asymmetries in inclusive $J/ψ$ production in longitudinally polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV

We report the double helicity asymmetry, $A_{LL}^{J/ψ}$, in inclusive $J/ψ$ production at forward rapidity as a function of transverse momentum $p_T$ and rapidity $|y|$. The data analyzed were taken during $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV longitudinally polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in the 2013 run using the PHENIX detector. At this collision energy, $J/ψ$ particles are predominantly produced through gluon-gluon scatterings, thus $A_{LL}^{J/ψ}$ is sensitive to the gluon polarization inside the proton. We measured $A_{LL}^{J/ψ}$ by detecting the decay daughter muon pairs $μ^+ μ^-$ within the PHENIX muon spectrometers in the rapidity range $1.2<|y|<2.2$. In this kinematic range, we measured the $A_{LL}^{J/ψ}$ to be $0.012 \pm 0.010$~(stat)~$\pm$~$0.003$(syst). The $A_{LL}^{J/ψ}$ can be expressed to be proportional to the product of the gluon polarization distributions at two distinct ranges of Bjorken $x$: one at moderate range $x \approx 0.05$ where recent RHIC data of jet and $π^0$ double helicity spin asymmetries have shown evidence for significant gluon polarization, and the other one covering the poorly known small-$x$ region $x \approx 2\times 10^{-3}$. Thus our new results could be used to further constrain the gluon polarization for $x< 0.05$.

Measurements of directed, elliptic, and triangular flow in Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

Measurements of anisotropic flow Fourier coefficients ($v_n$) for inclusive charged particles and identified hadrons $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ produced at midrapidity in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV are presented. The data were collected in 2012 by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The particle azimuthal distributions with respect to different order symmetry planes $Ψ_n$, for $n$~=~1, 2, and 3 are studied as a function of transverse momentum $p_T$ over a broad range of collisions centralities. Mass ordering, as expected from hydrodynamic flow, is observed for all three harmonics. The charged-particle results are compared to hydrodynamical and transport model calculations. We also compare these Cu$+$Au results with those in Cu$+$Cu and Au$+$Au collisions at the same $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$, and find that the $v_2$ and $v_3$, as a function of transverse momentum, follow a common scaling with $1/(\varepsilon_n N_{\rm part}^{1/3})$.

Measurement of the higher-order anisotropic flow coefficients for identified hadrons in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV

New PHENIX measurements of the anisotropic flow coefficients $v_2\{Ψ_2\}$, $v_3\{Ψ_3\}$, $v_4\{Ψ_4\}$ and $v_4\{Ψ_2\}$ for identified particles ($π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and $p+\bar{p}$) obtained relative to the event planes $Ψ_n$ in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV are presented as functions of collision centrality and particle transverse momenta $p_T$. The $v_n$ coefficients show characteristic patterns consistent with hydrodynamical expansion of the matter produced in the collisions. For each harmonic $n$, a modified valence quark number $n_q$ scaling plotting $v_n/(n_q)^{n/2}$ versus ${\rm KE}_T/n_q$ is observed to yield a single curve for all the measured particle species for a broad range of transverse kinetic energies ${\rm KE}_T$. A simultaneous blast wave model fit to the observed particle spectra and $v_n(p_T)$ coefficients identifies spatial eccentricities $s_n$ at freeze-out, which are much smaller than the initial-state geometric values.

Forward $J/ψ$ production in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=193 GeV

The invariant yields for $J/ψ$ production at forward rapidity $(1.2<|y|<2.2)$ in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=193 GeV have been measured as a function of collision centrality. The invariant yields and nuclear-modification factor $R_{AA}$ are presented and compared with those from Au$+$Au collisions in the same rapidity range. Additionally, the direct ratio of the invariant yields from U$+$U and Au$+$Au collisions within the same centrality class is presented, and used to investigate the role of $c\bar{c}$ coalescence. Two different parameterizations of the deformed Woods-Saxon distribution were used in Glauber calculations to determine the values of the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions in each centrality class, $N_{\rm coll}$, and these were found to give significantly different $N_{\rm coll}$ values. Results using $N_{\rm coll}$ values from both deformed Woods-Saxon distributions are presented. The measured ratios show that the $J/ψ$ suppression, relative to binary collision scaling, is similar in U$+$U and Au$+$Au for peripheral and midcentral collisions, but that $J/ψ$ show less suppression for the most central U$+$U collisions. The results are consistent with a picture in which, for central collisions, increase in the $J/ψ$ yield due to $c\bar{c}$ coalescence becomes more important than the decrease in yield due to increased energy density. For midcentral collisions, the conclusions about the balance between $c\bar{c}$ coalescence and suppression depend on which deformed Woods-Saxon distribution is used to determine $N_{\rm coll}$.

The PROSPECT Physics Program

The Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment, PROSPECT, is designed to make a precise measurement of the antineutrino spectrum from a highly-enriched uranium reactor and probe eV-scale sterile neutrinos by searching for neutrino oscillations over meter-long distances. PROSPECT is conceived as a 2-phase experiment utilizing segmented $^6$Li-doped liquid scintillator detectors for both efficient detection of reactor antineutrinos through the inverse beta decay reaction and excellent background discrimination. PROSPECT Phase I consists of a movable 3-ton antineutrino detector at distances of 7 - 12 m from the reactor core. It will probe the best-fit point of the $ν_e$ disappearance experiments at 4$σ$ in 1 year and the favored region of the sterile neutrino parameter space at $>$3$σ$ in 3 years. With a second antineutrino detector at 15 - 19 m from the reactor, Phase II of PROSPECT can probe the entire allowed parameter space below 10 eV$^{2}$ at 5$σ$ in 3 additional years. The measurement of the reactor antineutrino spectrum and the search for short-baseline oscillations with PROSPECT will test the origin of the spectral deviations observed in recent $θ_{13}$ experiments, search for sterile neutrinos, and conclusively address the hypothesis of sterile neutrinos as an explanation of the reactor anomaly.

Inclusive cross section and double-helicity asymmetry for $π^{0}$ production at midrapidity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV

PHENIX measurements are presented for the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry ($A_{LL}$) in inclusive $π^0$ production at midrapidity from $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$~GeV from data taken in 2012 and 2013 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics theory calculation is in excellent agreement with the presented cross section results. The calculation utilized parton-to-pion fragmentation functions from the recent DSS14 global analysis, which prefer a smaller gluon-to-pion fragmentation function. The $π^{0}A_{LL}$ results follow an increasingly positive asymmetry trend with $p_T$ and $\sqrt{s}$ with respect to the predictions and are in excellent agreement with the latest global analysis results. This analysis incorporated earlier results on $π^0$ and jet $A_{LL}$, and suggested a positive contribution of gluon polarization to the spin of the proton $ΔG$ for the gluon momentum fraction range $x>0.05$. The data presented here extend to a currently unexplored region, down to $x\sim0.01$, and thus provide additional constraints on the value of $ΔG$. The results confirm the evidence for nonzero $ΔG$ using a different production channel in a complementary kinematic region.

Background Radiation Measurements at High Power Research Reactors

Research reactors host a wide range of activities that make use of the intense neutron fluxes generated at these facilities. Recent interest in performing measurements with relatively low event rates, e.g. reactor antineutrino detection, at these facilities necessitates a detailed understanding of background radiation fields. Both reactor-correlated and naturally occurring background sources are potentially important, even at levels well below those of importance for typical activities. Here we describe a comprehensive series of background assessments at three high-power research reactors, including $γ$-ray, neutron, and muon measurements. For each facility we describe the characteristics and identify the sources of the background fields encountered. The general understanding gained of background production mechanisms and their relationship to facility features will prove valuable for the planning of any sensitive measurement conducted therein.

Light Collection and Pulse-Shape Discrimination in Elongated Scintillator Cells for the PROSPECT Reactor Antineutrino Experiment

A meter-long, 23-liter EJ-309 liquid scintillator detector has been constructed to study the light collection and pulse-shape discrimination performance of elongated scintillator cells for the PROSPECT reactor antineutrino experiment. The magnitude and uniformity of light collection and neutron/gamma discrimination power in the energy range of antineutrino inverse beta decay products have been studied using gamma and spontaneous fission calibration sources deployed along the cell long axis. We also study neutron-gamma discrimination and light collection abilities for differing PMT and reflector configurations. Key design features for optimizing MeV-scale response and background rejection capabilities are identified.
