Effects of s,p - d and s - p exchange interactions probed by exciton magnetospectroscopy in (Ga,Mn)N

Near band-gap photoluminescence and reflectivity in magnetic field are employed to determine the exchange-induced splitting of free exciton states in paramagnetic wurtzite Ga1-xMnxN, x < 1%, grown on sapphire substrates by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The band gap is found to increase with x. The giant Zeeman splitting of all three excitons A, B and C is resolved, enabling the determination of the apparent exchange integrals N0alpha(app) = 0.0 +/- 0.1 eV and N0beta(app) = +0.8 +/- 0.2 eV. These non-standard values and signs of the s - d and p - d exchange energies are explained in terms of recent theories that suggest a contribution of the electron-hole exchange to the spin splitting of the conduction band and a renormalization of the free hole spin-splitting by a large p - d hybridization. According to these models, in the limit of a strong p - d coupling, the band gap of (Ga,Mn)N increases with x and the order of hole spin subbands is reversed, as observed.

Slowing hot carrier relaxation in graphene using a magnetic field

A degenerate pump--probe technique is used to investigate the non equilibrium carrier dynamics in multi--layer graphene. Two distinctly different dynamics of the carrier relaxation are observed. A fast relaxation ($\sim 50$ fs) of the carriers after the initial effect of phase space filling followed by a slower relaxation ($\sim 4$ ps) due to thermalization. Both relaxation processes are less efficient when a magnetic field is applied at low temperatures which is attributed to the suppression of the electron-electron Auger scattering due to the non equidistant Landau level spacing of the Dirac fermions in graphene.

Optical manipulation of a single Mn spin in a CdTe-based quantum dot

A system of two coupled CdTe quantum dots, one of them containing a single Mn ion, was studied in continuous wave and modulated photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation, and photon correlation experiments. Optical writing of information in the spin state of the Mn ion has been demonstrated, using orientation of the Mn spin by spin-polarized carriers transferred from the neighbor quantum dot. Mn spin orientation time values from 20 ns to 100 ns were measured, depending on the excitation power. Storage time of the information in the Mn spin was found to be enhanced by application of a static magnetic field of 1 T, reaching hundreds of microseconds in the dark. Simple rate equation models were found to describe correctly static and dynamical properties of the system.

Optically induced energy and spin transfer in non-resonantly coupled pairs of self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots

Asymmetrical horizontal interdot coupling was demonstrated to exist in a system of a single plane of self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. Photoluminescence excitation (PLE), second order photon correlation and optical orientation were used as main experimental tools. Each individual absorbing dot was identified by a sharp PLE resonance, assigned to neutral exciton transition, while the corresponding emission contained several excitonic transitions of different charge states in another single quantum dot different from the absorbing one. Energy and spin transfer dynamics were studied. A high efficiency of spin transfer was found from optical orientation in a vertical magnetic field (70%) as well as without the magnetic field (40%), in spite of a significant anisotropic exchange splitting of the absorbing dot. Coherent mechanism of linear-to-circular polarization conversion was identified, with an efficiency (43%) close to the theoretical limit of 50%.

Single spin optical read-out in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot studied by photon correlation spectroscopy

Spin dynamics of a single electron and an exciton confined in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot is investigated by polarization-resolved correlation spectroscopy. Spin memory effects extending over at least a few tens of nanoseconds have been directly observed in magnetic field and described quantitatively in terms of a simple rate equation model. We demonstrate an effective (68%) all-optical read-out of the single carrier spin state through probing the degree of circular polarization of exciton emission after capture of an oppositely charged carrier. The perturbation introduced by the pulsed optical excitation serving to study the spin dynamics has been found to be the main source of the polarization loss in the read-out process. In the limit of low laser power the read-out efficiency extrapolates to a value close to 100%. The measurements allowed us as well to determine neutral exciton spin relaxation time ranging from 3.4 +/- 0.1 ns at B = 0 T to 16 +/- 3 ns at B = 5 T.

Observation of strong-coupling effects in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Fe)N

A direct observation of the giant Zeeman splitting of the free excitons in (Ga,Fe)N is reported. The magnetooptical and magnetization data imply the ferromagnetic sign and a reduced magnitude of the effective p-d exchange energy governing the interaction between Fe^{3+} ions and holes in GaN, N_0 beta^(app) = +0.5 +/- 0.2 eV. This finding corroborates the recent suggestion that the strong p-d hybridization specific to nitrides and oxides leads to significant renormalization of the valence band exchange splitting.

Excitonic giant Zeeman effect in GaN:Mn^3+

We describe a direct observation of the excitonic giant Zeeman splitting in (Ga,Mn)N, a wide-gap III-V diluted magnetic semiconductor. Reflectivity and absorption spectra measured at low temperatures display the A and B excitons, with a shift under magnetic field due to s,p-d exchange interactions. Using an excitonic model, we determine the difference of exchange integrals between Mn^3+ and free carriers in GaN, N_0(alpha-beta)=-1.2 +/- 0.2 eV. Assuming a reasonable value of alpha, this implies a positive sign of beta which corresponds to a rarely observed ferromagnetic interaction between the magnetic ions and the holes.

Manipulating the exciton fine structure of single CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots by an in-plane magnetic field

Polarization resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy of individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots is investigated in the presence of external in-plane magnetic field. We find that the excitonic fine structure strongly depends on the magnitude and direction of applied field. The splitting between "bright" and "dark" states increases with the magnetic field, whereas the anisotropic exchange splitting of the bright excitons can be reduced or enhanced, depending on the field direction. Increase (decrease) is observed when the field is applied parallel to the PL polarization direction of the lower (upper) energy exciton. For intermediate fields, we observe a rotation of the PL polarization orientation. The results are discussed in terms of an effective spin Hamiltonian derived for the exciton ground state.

Excitation mechanisms of individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots studied by photon correlation spectroscopy

Systematic measurements of auto- and cross-correlations of photons emitted from individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots under pulsed excitation were used to elucidate non-resonant excitation mechanisms in this self-assembled system. Memory effects extending over a few excitation pulses have been detected in agreement with previous reports and quantitatively described by a rate equation model, fitting a complete set of correlation and PL intensity results. The important role of single carrier trapping in the quantum dot was established. An explanation was suggested for the unusually wide antibunching dip observed previously in X-X autocorrelation experiments on quantum dots under cw excitation.

Microphotoluminescence study of disorder in ferromagnetic (Cd,Mn)Te quantum well

Microphotoluminescence mapping experiments were performed on a modulation doped (Cd,Mn)Te quantum well exhibiting carrier induced ferromagnetism. The zero field splitting that reveals the presence of a spontaneous magnetization in the low-temperature phase, is measured locally; its fluctuations are compared to those of the spin content and of the carrier density, also measured spectroscopically in the same run. We show that the fluctuations of the carrier density are the main mechanism responsible for the fluctuations of the spontaneous magnetization in the ferromagnetic phase, while those of the Mn spin density have no detectable effect at this scale of observation.

Proximity induced metal/insulator transition in $Y Ba_2 Cu_3 O_7 / La_{2/3} Ca_{1/3} Mn O_3$ superlattices

The far-infrared dielectric response of superlattices (SL) composed of superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) and ferromagnetic La$_{0.67}$% Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) has been investigated by ellipsometry. A drastic decrease of the free carrier response is observed which involves an unusually large length scale of d$^{crit}\approx $20 nm in YBCO and d$^{crit}\approx $10 nm in LCMO. A corresponding suppression of metallicity is not observed in SLs where LCMO is replaced by the paramagnetic metal LaNiO$_{3}$. Our data suggest that either a long range charge transfer from the YBCO to the LCMO layers or alternatively a strong coupling of the charge carriers to the different and competitive kind of magnetic correlations in the LCMO and YBCO layers are at the heart of the observed metal/insulator transition. The low free carrier response observed in the far-infrared dielectric response of the magnetic superconductor RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is possibly related to this effect.

In-plane polarized collective modes in detwinned YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.95}$ observed by spectral ellipsometry

The in-plane dielectric response of detwinned YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.95}$ has been studied by far-infared ellipsometry. A surprisingly lare number of in-plane polarized modes are observed. Some of them correspond to pure phonon modes. Others posses a large electronic contribution which strongly increases in the superconducting state. The free carrier response and the collective modes exhibit a pronounced a-b anisotropy. We discuss our results in terms of a CDW state in the 1-d CuO chains and induced charge density fluctuations within the 2-d CuO$_{2}$ planes.

Anomalous peak in the superconducting condensate density of cuprate high T_{c} superconductors at a unique critical doping state

The doping dependence of the superconducting condensate density, n_{s}^{o}, has been studied by muon-spin-rotation for Y_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Ba_{2}(Cu_{1-z}Zn_{z})_{3}O_{7-δ} and Tl_{0.5-y}Pb_{0.5+y}Sr_{2}Ca_{1-x}Y_{x}Cu_{2}O_{7}. We find that n_{s}^{o} exhibits a pronounced peak at a unique doping state in the slightly overdoped regime. Its position coincides with the critical doping state where the normal state pseudogap first appears depleting the electronic density of states. A surprising correlation between n_{s}^{o} and the condensation energy U_{o} is observed which suggests unconventional behavior even in the overdoped region.

Far-infrared c-axis conductivity of flux-grown Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ single crystals studied by spectral ellipsometry

The far-infrared c-axis conductivity of flux-grown Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ single crystals with 0.2$\leq $x$\leq $0.5 has been studied by sepectral ellipsometry. We find that the c-axis response exhibits spectral features similar to deoxygenated underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$, i.e., a pseudogap develops in the normal state, the phonon mode at 320 cm$^{-1}$ exhibits an anomalous T-dependence and an additional absorption peak forms at T. This suggests that the T$_{c}$ suppression in flux grown Pr-substituted crystals is caused by a decrease of the hole content and/or by carrier localization rather than by pair breaking.

The anomaly of the oxygen bond-bending mode at 320 cm$^{-1}$ and the additional absorption peak in the c-axis infrared conductivity of underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals revisited by ellipsometricmeasurements

We have performed ellipsometric measurements of the far-infrared c-axis dielectric response of underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals. Here we report a detailed analysis of the temperature-dependent renormalization of the oxygen bending phonon mode at 320 cm$^{-1}$ and the formation of the additional absorption peak around 400-500 cm$^{-1}$. For a strongly underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$ crystal with T$_{c}$=52 K we find that, in agreement with previous reports based on conventional reflection measurements, the gradual onset of both features occurs well above T$_{c}$ at T*$\sim $150 K. Contrary to some of these reports, however, our data establish that the phonon anomaly and the formation of the additional peak exhibit very pronounced and steep changes right at T$_{c}$. For a less underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.75}$ crystal with T$_{c}$=80 K, the onset temperature of the phonon anomaly almost coincides with T$_{c}$. Also in contrast to some previous reports, we find for both crystals that a sizeable fraction of the spectral weight of the additional absorption peak cannot be accounted for by the spectral-weight loss of the phonon modes but instead arises from a redistribution of the electronic continuum. Our ellipsometric data are consistent with a model where the bilayer cuprate compounds are treated as a superlattice of intra- and inter-bilayer Josephson-junctions.

Anomalies of the infrared-active phonons in underdoped YBCO as an evidence for the intra-bilayer Josephson effect

The spectra of the far-infrared c-axis conductivity of underdoped YBCO crystals exhibit dramatic changes of some of the phonon peaks when going from the normal to the superconducting state. We show that the most striking of these anomalies can be naturally explained by changes of the local fields acting on the ions arising from the onset of inter- and intra-bilayer Josephson effects.

Evidence for a Two-stage Melting Transition of the Vortex Matter in Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+d Single Crystals obtained by Muon Spin Rotation

From muon spin rotation measurements on under- to overdoped Bi-2212 crystals we obtain evidence for a two-stage transition of the vortex matter as a function of temperature. The first transition is well known and related to the irreversibility line (IL). The second one is located below the IL and has not been previously observed. It occurs for all three sets of crystals and is unrelated to the vortex mobility. Our data are consistent with a two-stage melting scenario where the intra-planar melting of the vortex lattice and the inter-planar decoupling of the vortex lines occur independently.

Coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the hybrid ruthenate-cuprate compound RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 studied by muon spin rotation (μSR) and DC-magnetization

We have investigated the magnetic and the superconducting properties of the hybrid ruthenate-cuprate compound RuSr_{2}GdCu_{2}O_{8} by means of zero-field muon spin rotation- (ZF-$μ$SR) and DC magnetization measurements. The DC-magnetisation data establish that this material exhibits ferromagnetic order of the Ru-moments ($μ(Ru) \approx 1 μ_{B}$) below T_{Curie} = 133 K and becomes superconducting at a much lower temperature T_c = 16 K. The ZF-$μ$SR experiments indicate that the ferromagnetic phase is homogeneous on a microscopic scale and accounts for most of the sample volume. They also suggest that the magnetic order is not significantly modified at the onset of superconductivity.
