Pion scattering poles and chiral symmetry restoration

Using unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory methods, we perform a detailed analysis of the $ππ$ scattering poles $f_0(600)$ and $ρ(770)$ behaviour when medium effects such as temperature or density drive the system towards Chiral Symmetry Restoration. In the analysis of real poles below threshold, we show that it is crucial to extend properly the unitarized amplitudes so that they match the perturbative Adler zeros. Our results do not show threshold enhancement effects at finite temperature in the $f_0(600)$ channel, which remains as a pole of broad nature. We also implement T=0 finite density effects related to chiral symmetry restoration, by varying the pole position with the pion decay constant. Although this approach takes into account only a limited class of contributions, we reproduce the expected finite density restoration behaviour, which drives the poles towards the real axis, producing threshold enhancement and $ππ$ bound states. We compare our results with several model approaches and discuss the experimental consequences, both in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions and in $π\to ππ$ and $γ\to ππ$ reactions in nuclei.

Transport properties of a meson gas

We present recent results on a systematic method to calculate transport coefficients for a meson gas (in particular, we analyze a pion gas) at low temperatures in the context of Chiral Perturbation Theory. Our method is based on the study of Feynman diagrams with a power counting which takes into account collisions in the plasma by means of a non-zero particle width. In this way, we obtain results compatible with analysis of Kinetic Theory with just the leading order diagram. We show the behavior with temperature of electrical and thermal conductivities and shear and bulk viscosities, and we discuss the fundamental role played by unitarity. We obtain that bulk viscosity is negligible against shear viscosity near the chiral phase transition. Relations between the different transport coefficients and bounds on them based on different theoretical approximations are also discussed. We also comment on some applications to heavy-ion collisions.

Transport coefficients in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We present recent results on the calculation of transport coefficients for a pion gas at zero chemical potential in Chiral Perturbation Theory using Linear Response Theory. More precisely, we show the behavior of DC conductivity and shear viscosity at low temperatures. To compute transport coefficients, the standard power counting of ChPT has to be modified. The effects derived from imposing unitarity are also analyzed. As physical applications in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions, we show the relation of the DC conductivity to soft-photon production and phenomenological effects related to a nonzero shear viscosity. In addition, our values for the shear viscosity to entropy ratio satisfy the KSS bound.

Electromagnetic fields and transport coefficients in a hot pion gas

We present recent results on finite temperature electromagnetic form factors and the electrical conductivity in a pion gas. The standard Chiral Perturbation Theory power counting needs to be modified for transport coefficients. We pay special attention to unitarity and to possible applications for dilepton and photon production.

The electrical conductivity of a pion gas

The electrical conductivity of a pion gas at low temperatures is studied in the framework of Linear Response and Chiral Perturbation Theory. The standard ChPT power counting has to be modified to include pion propagator lines with a nonzero thermal width in order to properly account for collision effects typical of Kinetic Theory. With this modification, we discuss the relevant chiral power counting to be used in the calculation of transport coefficients. The leading order contribution is found and we show that the dominant higher order ladder diagrams can be treated as perturbative corrections at low temperatures. We find that the DC conductivity $σ(T)$ is a decreasing function of $T$, behaving for very low $T$ as $σ(T)\sim e^2m_π\sqrt{m_π/T}$, consistently with nonrelativistic Kinetic Theory. When unitarization effects are included, $σ(T)$ increases slowly as $T$ approaches the chiral phase transition. We compare with related works and discuss some physical consequences, especially in the context of the low-energy hadronic photon spectrum in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.

Finite temperature pion vector form factors in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We discuss the thermal behaviour of the pion vector form factors and calculate them in one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory. The perturbative result is used to analyze the $T$-dependent electromagnetic pion charge radius, obtaining a rough estimate of the deconfinement critical temperature. Imposing thermal unitarity, we generate the $ρ$ resonance pole for the form factor in the center of mass frame. The $ρ$ peak height in the modulus of the form factor decreases for increasing temperature, while its width increases and the peak position is slightly shifted downwards for $T\simeq$ 150 MeV. These results point in the direction suggested by many analysis of dilepton production data in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Chiral Mesons in Hot Matter

We review our recent work on thermal meson properties within the Chiral Perturbation Theory framework. We will focus on the pion electromagnetic form factor, stressing its importance for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions. We obtain model-independent predictions (based only on chiral symmetry) such as the temperature dependence of the pion electromagnetic charge radius. Imposing unitarity allows to describe the thermal effects of resonances such as the $ρ$ meson.

Light meson resonances from unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

We report on our recent progress in the generation of resonant behavior in unitarized meson-meson scattering amplitudes obtained from Chiral Perturbation Theory. These amplitudes provide simultaneously a remarkable description of the resonance region up to 1.2 GeV as well as the low energy region, since they respect the chiral symmetry expansion. By studying the position of the poles in these amplitudes it is possible to determine the mass and width of the associated resonances, as well as to get a hint on possible classification schemes, that could be of interest for the spectroscopy of the scalar sector.

Rho and Sigma Mesons in Unitarized Thermal ChPT

We present our recent results for the rho and sigma mesons considered as resonances in pion-pion scattering in a thermal bath. We use chiral perturbation theory to fourth order in p for the low energy behaviour, then extend the analysis via the unitarization method of the Inverse Amplitude into the resonance region. The width of the rho broadens about twice the amount required by phase space considerations alone, its mass staying practically constant up to temperatures of order 150 MeV. The sigma meson behaves in accordance to chiral symmetry restoration expectations.

Thermal Meson properties within Chiral Perturbation Theory

We report on our recent work about the description of a meson gas below the chiral phase transition within the framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory. As an alternative to the standard treatment, we present a calculation of the quark condensate which combines the virial expansion and the meson-meson scattering data. We have also calculated the full one-loop elastic pion scattering amplitude at finite temperature and we have unitarized the amplitude using the Inverse Amplitude Method in order to reproduce the temperature effects on the mass and width of the $ρ$ and $σ$ resonances. Our results show a clear increase of the thermal $ρ$ width, as expected from previous analysis. The results for the $σ$ are consistent with Chiral Symmetry Restoration. We comment on the relevance of our results within the context of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.

Meson resonances from unitarized meson scattering at one loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We show the results for the scattering poles associated to the rho, f0, a0, K*, sigma and kappa resonances in meson-meson scattering. Our amplitudes are obtained from the complete one-loop meson-meson scattering amplitudes from Chiral Perturbation Theory. Once unitarized with the Inverse Amplitude Method, they describe remarkably well the data simultaneously in the low energy and resonance regions up to 1.2 GeV, using low energy parameters compatible with present determinations.

Finite Temperature Pion Scattering to one-loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We present the pion-pion elastic scattering amplitude at finite temperature to one-loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory. The thermal scattering amplitude properly defined allows to generalize the perturbative unitarity relation to the $T\neq 0$ case. Our result provides a model independent prediction of an enhanced pion-pion low-energy phase shift with the temperature and it has physical applications within the context of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.

Thermal rho and sigma mesons from chiral symmetry and unitarity

We study the temperature evolution of the rho and sigma mass and width, using a unitary chiral approach. The one-loop pion-pion scattering amplitude in Chiral Perturbation Theory at finite temperature is unitarized via the Inverse Amplitude Method. Our results predict a clear increase with T of both the rho and sigma widths. The masses decrease slightly for high T, while the rho-pion-pion coupling increases. The rho behavior seems to be favored by experimental results. In the sigma case, it signals chiral symmetry restoration.

Transport Coefficients and Analytic Continuation in Dual 1+1 Dimensional Models at Finite Temperature

The conductivity of a finite temperature 1+1 dimensional fermion gas described by the massive Thirring model is shown to be related to the retarded propagator of the dual boson sine-Gordon model. Duality provides a natural resummation which resolves infra-red problems, and the boson propagator can be related to the fermion gas at non-zero temperature and chemical potential or density. In addition, at high temperatures, we can apply a dimensional reduction technique to find resummed closed expressions for the boson self-energy and relate them to the fermion conductivity. Particular attention is paid to the discussion of analytic continuation. The resummation implicit in duality provides a powerful alternative to the standard diagrammatic evaluation of transport coefficients at finite temperature.

Meson-meson scattering within one loop Chiral Perturbation Theory and its unitarization

We present the complete one-loop calculation of all the two meson scattering amplitudes within the framework of SU(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory, which includes pions, kaons and the eta. In addition, we have unitarized these amplitudes with the coupled channel Inverse Amplitude Method, which ensures simultaneously the good low energy properties of Chiral Perturbation Theory and unitarity. We show how this method provides a remarkable description of meson-meson scattering data up to 1.2 GeV including the scattering lengths and the generation of seven light resonances, which is consistent with previous determination of the chiral parameters. Particular attention is paid to discuss the differences and similarities of this work with previous analysis in the literature.

Complete meson-meson scattering within one loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory: Unitarization and resonances

We review our recent one-loop calculation of all the two meson scattering amplitudes within SU(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory, i.e. with pions, kaons and etas. By unitarizing these amplitudes we are able to generate dynamically the lightest resonances in meson-meson scattering. We thus obtain a remarkable description of the meson-meson scattering data right from threshold up to 1.2 GeV, in terms of chiral parameters in good agreement with previous determinations.

Nonequilibrium Chiral Dynamics and Effective Lagrangians

We review our recent work on Chiral Lagrangians out of thermal equilibrium, which are introduced to analyse the pion gas formed after a Relativistic Heavy Ion Collision. Chiral Perturbation Theory is extended by letting $\fpi$ be time dependent and allows to describe explosive production of pions in parametric resonance. This mechanism could be relevant if hadronization occurs at the chiral phase transition.
