Scale setting for $\mathcal{N} = 1$ SUSY Yang-Mills at large-$N$ through volume-reduced twisted matrix model

$\mathcal{N}=1$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory is an appealing theoretical framework that has been studied in the literature using different methods, including standard lattice simulations. Among these, the volume-reduced twisted Eguchi-Kawai model, endowed with one adjoint Majorana fermion, could play an important role in studying its large-$N$ limit via the Curci-Veneziano prescription. In this talk, we present our results on the analysis of the scale of the theory, performed via different methods based on purely gluonic observables as well as (quenched) fundamental mesons in the chiral limit. These lattice results will be used as a scale setting for the analysis of the spectrum of the theory.

An 8-mm diameter Fiber Robot Positioner for Massive Spectroscopy Surveys

Massive spectroscopic survey are becoming trendy in astrophysics and cosmology, as they can address new fundamental knowledge such as Galactic Archaeology and probe the nature of the mysterious Dark Energy. To enable massive spectroscopic surveys, new technology are being developed to place thousands of optical fibers at a given position on a focal plane. These technology needs to be: 1) accurate, with micrometer positional accuracy; 2) fast to minimize overhead; 3) robust to minimize failure; and 4) low cost. In this paper we present the development of a new 8-mm in diameter fiber positionner robot using two 4mm DC-brushless gearmotors, developed in the context of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. This development was conducted by a Spanish-Swiss (ES-CH) team led by the Instituto de Física Teórica (UAM-CSIC) and the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique (EPFL), in collaboration with the AVS company in Spain and the Faulhaber group (MPS & FAULHABER-MINIMOTOR) in Switzerland.

The BigBOSS Experiment

BigBOSS is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment to study baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the growth of structure with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey over 14,000 square degrees. It has been conditionally accepted by NOAO in response to a call for major new instrumentation and a high-impact science program for the 4-m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak. The BigBOSS instrument is a robotically-actuated, fiber-fed spectrograph capable of taking 5000 simultaneous spectra over a wavelength range from 340 nm to 1060 nm, with a resolution R = 3000-4800. Using data from imaging surveys that are already underway, spectroscopic targets are selected that trace the underlying dark matter distribution. In particular, targets include luminous red galaxies (LRGs) up to z = 1.0, extending the BOSS LRG survey in both redshift and survey area. To probe the universe out to even higher redshift, BigBOSS will target bright [OII] emission line galaxies (ELGs) up to z = 1.7. In total, 20 million galaxy redshifts are obtained to measure the BAO feature, trace the matter power spectrum at smaller scales, and detect redshift space distortions. BigBOSS will provide additional constraints on early dark energy and on the curvature of the universe by measuring the Ly-alpha forest in the spectra of over 600,000 2.2 < z < 3.5 quasars. BigBOSS galaxy BAO measurements combined with an analysis of the broadband power, including the Ly-alpha forest in BigBOSS quasar spectra, achieves a FOM of 395 with Planck plus Stage III priors. This FOM is based on conservative assumptions for the analysis of broad band power (kmax = 0.15), and could grow to over 600 if current work allows us to push the analysis to higher wave numbers (kmax = 0.3). BigBOSS will also place constraints on theories of modified gravity and inflation, and will measure the sum of neutrino masses to 0.024 eV accuracy.

Primordial magnetic fields at preheating

Using lattice techniques we investigate the generation of long range cosmological magnetic fields during a cold electroweak transition. We will show how magnetic fields arise, during bubble collisions, in the form of magnetic strings. We conjecture that these magnetic strings originate from the alignment of magnetic dipoles associated with EW sphaleron-like configurations. We also discuss the early thermalisation of photons and the turbulent behaviour of the scalar fields after tachyonic preheating.

Magnetic field production after inflation

We study the electromagnetic field production during preheating after hybrid inflation in a model with the field content of the Standard Model, coupled to a singlet inflaton. We find that very soon after symmetry breaking our system enters a regime of kinetic turbulence, characterized by a self-similar behaviour of the energy spectra and a power-like dependence on time of the inflaton and Higgs field variances.

Large N reduction on a twisted torus

We consider SU(N) lattice gauge theory at infinite N defined on a torus with a CP invariant twist. Massless fermions are incorporated in an elegant way, while keeping them quenched. We present some numerical results which suggest that twisting can make numerical simulations of planar QCD more efficient.

Fermions on tori in uniform abelian fields

We study Fermi fields defined on tori in the presence of gauge backgrounds carrying non-trivial topology. We show that 2k dimensional field space can alternatively be described by fields over a k-dimensional space. This dual description is particularly natural when the background is uniform and abelian. The reduction in number of dimensions carries over to the lattice. The lattice ultraviolet regularization induces an infrared regularization of the lower dimensional representations. We focus on k=1,2.

Perturbative construction of self-dual configurations on the torus

We develop a perturbative expansion which allows the construction of non-abelian self-dual SU(2) Yang-Mills field configurations on the four-dimensional torus with topological charge 1/2. The expansion is performed around the constant field strength abelian solutions found by 't Hooft. Next to leading order calculations are compared with numerical results obtained with lattice gauge theory techniques.

N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills on the lattice at strong coupling

We study N=1 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice at strong coupling. Our method is based on the hopping parameter expansion in terms of random walks, resummed for any value of the Wilson parameter r in the small hopping parameter region. Results are given for the mesonic (2-gluino) and fermionic (3-gluino) propagators and spectrum.

Nahm transformation on the lattice

The Nahm transformation is a duality mapping between self-dual Yang-Mills configurations on the torus, which exchanges the number of colours with the topological charge. We show how lattice gauge theory techniques can be used to implement it numerically. The method is presented and its precision illustrated with some applications.

Large N corrections to the strong coupling behaviour of SU(N)/Z_N lattice gauge theories

We derive a formula for the large N behaviour of the expectation values of an arbitrary product of Wilson loops in the adjoint representation. We show the consequences of our formula for the study of the large N strong coupling behaviour of SU(N)/Z_N pure gauge theories, and theories with matter fields in the adjoint representation. This allows us to calculate large N corrections to the gluino condensate and meson propagators in the lattice version of Supersymmetric Yang-Mills. Applications to the strong coupling behaviour of the Kazakov-Migdal model are also given.

Nahm dualities on the torus - a synthesis

We give a unified description of self-dual SU(2) gauge fields on tori of size lt x ls^3 based on a mixture of analytical and numerical methods using the Nahm transformation, extended to the case of twisted boundary conditions. We show how torus calorons (lt/ls small) are Nahm dual to the torus instantons (lt/ls large). Holonomies are dual to the locations of constituents, this duality becoming exact in the limiting cases ls or lt --> infinity. Implications for the moduli spaces are discussed.

Weyl-Dirac zero-mode for calorons

We give the analytic result for the fermion zero-mode of the SU(2) calorons with non-trivial holonomy. It is shown that the zero-mode is supported on ONLY ONE of the constituent monopoles. We discuss some of its implications.

Combinatorics of lattice paths with and without spikes

We derive a series of results on random walks on a d-dimensional hypercubic lattice (lattice paths). We introduce the notions of terse and simple paths corresponding to the path having no backtracking parts (spikes). These paths label equivalence classes which allow a rearrangement of the sum over paths. The basic combinatorial quantities of this construction are given. These formulas are useful when performing strong coupling (hopping parameter) expansions of lattice models. Some applications are described.

Calorons on the lattice - a new perspective

We discuss the manifestation of instanton and monopole solutions on a periodic lattice at finite temperature and their relation to the infinite volume analytic caloron solutions with asymptotic non-trivial Polyakov loops. As a tool we use improved cooling and twisted boundary conditions. Typically we find 2Q lumps for topological charge Q. These lumps are BPS monopoles.

On Nahm's transformation with twisted boundary conditions

Following two different tracks, we arrive at a definition of Nahm's transformation valid for self-dual fields on the 4-dimensional torus with non-zero twist tensor. The transform is again a self-dual gauge field defined on a new torus and with non-zero twist tensor. It preserves the property of being an involution.
