Phase shifted $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric periodic structures

We report the spectral features of a phase-shifted parity and time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric fiber Bragg grating (PPTFBG) and demonstrate its functionality as a demultiplexer in the unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime. The length of the proposed system is of the order of millimeters and the lasing spectra in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime can be easily tuned in terms of intensity, bandwidth and wavelength by varying the magnitude of the phase shift in the middle of the structure. Surprisingly, the multi-modal lasing spectra are suppressed by virtue of judiciously selected phase and the gain-loss value. Also, it is possible to obtain sidelobe-less spectra in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime, without a need for an apodization profile, which is a traditional way to tame the unwanted sidelobes. The system is found to show narrow band single-mode lasing behavior for a wide range of phase shift values for given values of gain and loss. Moreover, we report the intensity tunable reflection and transmission characteristics in the unbroken regime via variation in gain and loss. At the exceptional point, the system shows unidirectional wave transport phenomenon independent of the presence of phase shift in the middle of the grating. For the right light incidence direction, the system exhibits zero reflection wavelengths within the stopband at the exceptional point. We also investigate the role of multiple phase shifts placed at fixed locations along the length of the FBG and the variations in the spectra when the phase shift and gain-loss values are tuned. In the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime, the presence of multiple phase shifts aids in controlling the number of reflectivity peaks besides controlling their magnitude.

Tunable nonlinear spectra of anti-directional couplers

We produce transmission and reflection spectra of the anti-directional coupler (ADC) composed of linearly-coupled positive- and negative-refractive-index arms, with intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity. Both reflection and transmission feature two highly amplified peaks at two distinct wavelengths in a certain range of values of the gain, making it possible to design a wavelength-selective mode-amplification system. We also predict that a blend of gain and loss in suitable proportions can robustly enhance reflection spectra which are detrimentally affected by the attenuation, in addition to causing red and blue shifts owing to the Kerr effect. In particular, ADC with equal gain and loss coefficients, is considered in necessary detail.

Tailoring inhomogeneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber Bragg grating spectra

The unique spectral behavior exhibited by a class of non-uniform Bragg periodic structures, namely chirped and apodized fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) influenced by parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, is presented. The interplay between the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and nonuniformities brings exceptional functionalities in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase such as wavelength selective amplification and single-mode lasing for a wide range of variations in gain-loss. We observe that the device is no more passive and it undergoes a series of transitions from asymmetric reflection to unidirectional invisibility and multi-mode amplification as a consequence of variation in the imaginary part of the strength of modulation in different apodization profiles, namely Gaussian and raised cosine, at the given value of chirping. The chirping affords bandwidth control as well as control over the magnitude of the reflected (transmitted) light. Likewise, apodization offers additional functionality in the form of suppression of uncontrolled lasing behavior in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime besides moderating the reflected signals outside the band edges of the spectra.

Non-Lagrangian approach for coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau systems with higher order-dispersion

It is known that after a particular distance of evolution in fiber lasers, two (input) asymmetric soliton like pulses emerge as two (output) symmetric pulses having same and constant energy. We report such a compensation technique in dispersion managed fiber lasers by means of a semi-analytical method known as collective variable approach (CVA) with including third-order dispersion (TOD). The minimum length of fiber laser, at which the output symmetric pulses are obtained from the input asymmetric ones, is calculated for each and every pulse parameters numerically by employing Runge-Kutta fourth order method. The impacts of intercore linear coupling, asymmetric nature of initial parameters and TOD on the evolution of pulse parameters and on the minimum length are also investigated. It is found that strong intercore linear coupling and asymmetric nature of input pulse parameters result in the reduction of fiber laser length. Also, the role of TOD tends to increase the width of the pulses as well as their energies. Besides, chaotic patterns and bifurcation points on the minimum length of the fiber owing to the impact of TOD are also reported in a nutshell.

Nonlinear nonuniform $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Bragg grating structures

We explore the consequences of incorporating parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetries on the dynamics of nonreciprocal light propagation exhibited by a class of nonuniform periodic structures known as chirped $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The interplay among various grating parameters such as chirping, detuning, nonlinearities, and gain/loss gives rise to unique bi- and multi-stable states in the unbroken as well as broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regimes. The role of chirping on the steering dynamics of the hysteresis curve is influenced by the type of nonlinearities and the nature of detuning parameter. Also, incident directions of the input light robustly impact the steering dynamics of bistable and multistable states both in the unbroken and broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regimes. When the light launching direction is reversed, critical stable states are found to occur at very low intensities which opens up a new avenue for an additional way of controlling light with light. We also analyze the phenomenon of unidirectional wave transport and the reflective bi- and multi-stable characteristics at the so-called $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking point.

Multifaceted dynamics and gap solitons in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric periodic structures

We report the role of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry in switching characteristics of a highly nonlinear fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with cubic-quintic-septic nonlinearities. We demonstrate that the device shows novel bi-(multi-) stable states in the broken regime as a direct consequence of the shift in the photonic band gap influenced by both $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and higher-order nonlinearities. We also numerically depict that such FBGs provide a productive test bed where the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime can be exploited to set up all-optical applications such as binary switches, multi-level signal processing and optical computing. Unlike optical bistability (OB) in the traditional and unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric FBG, it exhibits many peculiar features such as flat-top stable states and ramp like input-output characteristics before the onset of OB phenomenon in the broken regime. The gain/loss parameter plays a dual role in controlling the switching intensities between the stable states which is facilitated by reversing the direction of light incidence. We also find that the gain/loss parameter tailors the formation of gap solitons pertaining to transmission resonances which clearly indicates that it can be employed to set up optical storage devices. Moreover, the interplay between gain/loss and higher order nonlinearities brings notable changes in the nonlinear reflection spectra of the system under constant pump powers. The influence of each control parameters on the switching operation is also presented in a nutshell to validate that FBG offers more degrees of freedom in controlling light with light.

Nonlinear anti-directional couplers with gain and loss

Following the concept of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric couplers, we propose a linearly coupled system of nonlinear waveguides, made of positive- and negative-index materials, which carry, respectively, gain and loss. We report novel bi- and multi-stability states pertaining to transmitted and reflective intensities, which are controlled by the ratio of the gain and loss coefficients, and phase mismatch between the waveguides. These states offer transmission regimes with extremely low threshold intensities for transitions between coexisting states, and very large amplification ratio between the input and output intensities leading to an efficient way of controlling light with light.

Cubic-quintic nonlinear Helmholtz equation: Modulational instability, chirped elliptic and solitary waves

We study the formation and propagation of chirped elliptic and solitary waves in cubic-quintic nonlinear Helmholtz (CQNLH) equation. This system describes nonparaxial pulse propagation in a planar waveguide with Kerr-like and quintic nonlinearities along with spatial dispersion originating from the nonparaxial effect that becomes dominant when the conventional slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA) fails. We first carry out the modulational instability (MI) analysis of a plane wave in this system by employing the linear stability analysis and investigate the influence of different physical parameters on the MI gain spectra. In particular, we show the nonparaxial parameter suppresses the conventional MI gain spectrum and also leads to a nontrivial monotonic increase in the gain spectrum near the tails of the conventional MI band, a qualitatively distinct behaviour from the standard nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) system. We then study the MI dynamics by direct numerical simulations which demonstrate production of ultra-short nonparaxial pulse trains with internal oscillations and slight distortions at the wings. Following the MI dynamics, we obtain exact elliptic and solitary wave solutions using the integration method by considering physically interesting chirped traveling wave ansatz. In particular, we show that the system features intriguing chirped anti-dark, bright, gray and dark solitary waves depending upon the nature of nonlinearities. We also show that the chirping is inversely proportional to the intensity of the optical wave. Especially, the bright and dark solitary waves exhibit unusual chirping behaviour which will have applications in nonlinear pulse compression process.

Tailoring $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric soliton switch

We theoretically demonstrate soliton steering in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric coupled nonlinear dimers. We show that if the length of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system is set to $2π$ contrary to the conventional one which operates satisfactorily well only at the half-beat coupling length, the $\mathcal{PT}$ dimer remarkably yields an ideal soliton switch exhibiting almost 99.99% energy efficiency with an ultra-low critical power.

Modulational Instability in Linearly Coupled Asymmetric Dual-Core Fibers

We investigate modulational instability (MI) in asymmetric dual-core nonlinear directional couplers incorporating the effects of the differences in effective mode areas and group velocity dispersions, as well as phase- and group-velocity mismatches. Using coupled-mode equations for this system, we identify MI conditions from the linearization with respect to small perturbations. First, we compare the MI spectra of the asymmetric system and its symmetric counterpart in the case of the anomalous group-velocity dispersion (GVD). In particular, it is demonstrated that the increase of the inter-core linear-coupling coefficient leads to a reduction of the MI gain spectrum in the asymmetric coupler. The analysis is extended for the asymmetric system in the normal-GVD regime, where the coupling induces and controls the MI, as well as for the system with opposite GVD signs in the two cores. Following the analytical consideration of the MI, numerical simulations are carried out to explore nonlinear development of the MI, revealing the generation of periodic chains of localized peaks with growing amplitudes, which may transform into arrays of solitons.
