Comparative High Field Magneto-Transport of Rare Earth Oxypnictides with Maximum Transition Temperatures

The recent discovery of a new class of superconducting oxypnictides with high transition temperatures may have profound implications for understanding unconventional high-temperature superconductivity. Like the cuprates, the oxypnictides seem to manifest an interleaving of charge donor and superconducting layers emerging upon doping of an antiferromagnetic parent semi-metal. Here we report magneto-transport measurements of three rare earth (Re = La, Nd, Sm) oxypnicide compounds with the transition temperatures near the maximum reported to date, in very high DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 and 54 T, respectively. Our resistivity, Hall coefficient and critical magnetic fields data suggest that these oxypnictide superconductors bridge the gap between MgB$_2$ and YBaCu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ as far as electromagnetic and vortex properties are concerned.

Evidence for two distinct scales of current flow in polycrystalline Sm and Nd iron oxypnictides

Early studies have found quasi-reversible magnetization curves in polycrystalline bulk rare-earth iron oxypnictides that suggest either wide-spread obstacles to intergranular current or very weak vortex pinning. In the present study of polycrystalline samarium and neodymium rare-earth iron oxypnictide samples made by high pressure synthesis, the hysteretic magnetization is significantly enhanced. Magneto optical imaging and study of the field dependence of the remanent magnetization as a function of particle size both show that global currents over the whole sample do exist but that the intergranular and intragranular current densities have distinctively different temperature dependences and differ in magnitude by about 1000. Assuming that the highest current density loops are restricted to circulation only within grains leads to values of ~5 MA/cm2 at 5 K and self field, while whole-sample current densities, though two orders of magnitude lower are 1000-10000 A/cm2, some two orders of magnitude higher than in random polycrystalline cuprates. We cannot yet be certain whether this large difference in global and intragrain current density is intrinsic to the oxypnictides or due to extrinsic barriers to current flow, because the samples contain significant second phase, some of which wets the grain boundaries and produces evidences of SNS proximity effect in the whole sample critical current.

Can antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist in the high-field paramagnetic superconductor Nd(O,F)FeAs?

We present measurements of the temperature and field dependencies of the magnetization M(T,H) of Nd(O0.89F0.11)FeAs at fields up to 33T, which show that superconductivity with the critical temperature Tc ~ 51K cannot coexist with antiferromagnetic ordering. Although M(T,H) at 55 < T < 140K exhibits a clear Curie-Weiss temperature dependence corresponding to the Neel temperature TN ~ 11-12K, the behavior of M(T,H) below Tc is only consistent with either paramagnetism of weakly interacting magnetic moments or a spin glass state. We suggest that the anomalous magnetic behavior of an unusual high-field paramagnetic superconductor Nd(O1-xFx)FeAs is mostly determined by the magnetic Nd ions.

Size effects in the nonlinear resistance and flux creep in a virtual Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless state of superconducting films

We show that the size effects radically affect the electric field-current ($E-I$) relation of superconducting films. We calculate $E(J)$ due to thermally-activated hopping of single vortices driven by current $I$ across the film in a magnetic field $H$, taking into account interaction of free vortices with their antivortex images and peaks in the Meissner currents at the film edges. Unbinding of virtual vortex-antivortex pairs not only mimics the transport uniform BKT behavior, it can dominate the observed $E(J)$ and result in the field-dependent ohmic resistance at small $I$. We show that $E(I)$ can be tuned by changing the film geometry and propose experimental tests of this theory.

Very High Field Two-Band Superconductivity in LaFeAsO_0.89F_0.11

The ongoing search for new superconductors has recently yielded a new family of oxypnictides composed of alternating La_2O_{2-x}F_x and Fe_2As_2 layers [1-4] with transition temperatures T_c of 25-28 K, which can be raised to 40-43 K by replacing La with Ce [5] or Sm [6] or to 52 K by replacing La with Nd and Pr [7, 8]. Recent experiments and band structure calculations have suggested an unconventional multiband superconductivity in the layers of paramagnetic Fe ions, which would normally destroy superconductivity in the traditional mechanism of the s-wave Cooper pairing. Here we report very high-field resistance measurements up to 45T, which show a remarkable enhancement of the upper critical fields B_c2 at low temperatures, as compared to those expected from the already high slopes of dB_c2/dT ~ 2T/K near T_c . The deduced B_c2(0) ~ 63-65 T exceeds the paramagnetic limit, consistent with strong coupling and important two-band effects in LaFeAsO_0.89F_0.11. We argue that oxypnictides are emerging as a new class of high-field superconductors surpassing the B_c2 of Nb_3Sn, MgB_2, and the Chevrel phases and perhaps approaching the 100T field benchmark of the high-T_c cuprates.

Dynamics of vortex penetration, jumpwise instabilities and nonlinear surface resistance of type-II superconductors in strong rf fields

We consider nonlinear dynamics of a single vortex in a superconductor in a strong rf magnetic field $B_0\sinωt$. Using the London theory, we calculate the dissipated power $Q(B_0,ω)$, and the transient time scales of vortex motion for the linear Bardeen-Stephen viscous drag force, which results in unphysically high vortex velocities during vortex penetration through the oscillating surface barrier. It is shown that penetration of a single vortex through the ac surface barrier always involves penetration of an antivortex and the subsequent annihilation of the vortex antivortex pairs. Using the nonlinear Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) viscous drag force at higher vortex velocities $v(t)$ results in a jump-wise vortex penetration through the surface barrier and a significant increase of the dissipated power. We calculate the effect of dissipation on nonlinear vortex viscosity $η(v)$ and the rf vortex dynamics and show that it can also result in the LO-type behavior, instabilities, and thermal localization of penetrating vortex channels. We propose a thermal feedback model of $η(v)$, which not only results in the LO dependence of $η(v)$ for a steady-state motion, but also takes into account retardation of temperature field around rapidly accelerating vortex, and a long-range interaction with the surface. We also address the effect of pinning on the nonlinear rf vortex dynamics and the effect of trapped magnetic flux on the surface resistance $R_s$ calculated as a function or rf frequency and field. It is shown that trapped flux can result in a temperature-independent residual resistance $R_i$ at low $T$, and a hysteretic low-field dependence of $R_i(B_0)$, which can {\it decrease} as $B_0$ is increased, reaching a minimum at $B_0$ much smaller than the thermodynamic critical field $B_c$.

Limits of the upper critical field in dirty two-gap superconductors

An overview of the theory of the upper critical field in dirty two-gap superconductors, with a particular emphasis on MgB$_2$ is given. We focus here on the maximum $H_{c2}$ which may be achieved by increasing intraband scattering, and on the limitations imposed by weak interband scattering and paramagnetic effects. In particular, we discuss recent experiments which have recently demonstrated ten-fold increase of $H_{c2}$ in dirty carbon-doped films as compared to single crystals, so that the $H_{c2}(0)$ parallel to the ab planes may approach the BCS paramagnetic limit, $H_p[T] = 1.84T_c[K] \simeq 60-70T$. New effects produced by weak interband scattering in the two-gap Ginzburg-Landau equations and $H_{c2}(T)$ in ultrathin MgB$_2$ films are addressed.

Phase textures induced by dc current pairbreaking in multilayer structures and two-gap superconductors

We predict current-induced formation of equilibrium phase textures for a multicomponent superconducting order parameter. Using the two-component Ginzburg-Landau and Usadel equations, we show that, for weakly coupled co-moving superconducting condensates, dc current I first causes breakdown of the phase locked state at $I>I_{c1}$ followed by the formation of intrinsic phase textures well below the depairing current $I_d$. These phase textures can manifest themselves in multilayer structures, atomic Bose condensate mixtures in optical lattices and two-gap superconductors, particularly MgB$_2$, where they can result in oscillating and resistive switching effects.

Mechanisms of weak thickness dependence of the critical current density in strong pinning ex situ metal-organic-deposition route YBa2Cu3O7-x coated conductors

We report on the thickness dependence of the superconducting characteristics including critical current Ic, critical current density Jc, transition temperature Tc, irreversibility field Hirr, bulk pinning force plot Fp(H), and the normal state resistivity curve measured after successive ion milling of ~ 1 um thick high Ic YBa2Cu3O7-x films made by an ex situ metal-organic deposition process on Ni-W rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS). Contrary to many recent data, mostly on in situ pulsed laser deposition (PLD) films, which show strong depression of Jc with increasing film thickness t, our films exhibit only a weak dependence of Jc on t. The two better textured samples had full cross-section average Jc,avg(77K,0T) ~ 4 MA/cm2 near the buffer layer interface and ~3 MA/cm2 at full thickness, despite significant current blocking due to ~30% porosity in the film. Taking account of the thickness dependence of the porosity, we estimate that the local, vortex-pinning current density is essentially independent of thickness, while accounting for the additional current-blocking effects of grain boundaries leads to local, vortex-pinning Jc values well above 5 MA/cm2. Such high local Jc values are produced by strong three-dimensional vortex pinning which subdivides vortex lines into weakly coupled segments much shorter than the film thickness.

Thermally-activated current transport in MgB_2 films

Thermally-activated flux flow (TAFF) resistivity above the irreversibility field is reported for two different c-axis textured MgB_2 superconducting films. Transport measurements at different perpendicular magnetic fields 0 < B < 9 T and temperatures from 5 to 40K reveal TAFF Ohmic resistivity described by the Arrhenius law with the quadratic field dependence of the activation energy. Our transport measurements on bulk MgB_2 ceramic samples also show the TAFF behavior, but do not show the quadratic field dependence of U(T,B). We explain our results in terms of thermally-activated drift of pre-existing quenched dislocations in the vortex lattice. Our results indicate that thermal fluctuations can be essential in determining the irreversibility field in MgB2 though to a much lesser extent than in high-temperature superconductors.

High-field superconductivity in alloyed MgB2 thin films

We investigated the effect of alloying on the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ in 12 $MgB_2$ films, in which disorder was introduced by growth, carbon doping or He-ion irradiation, finding a significant $H_{c2}$ enhancement in C-alloyed films, and an anomalous upward curvature of $H_{c2}(T)$. Record high values of $H_{c2}^{\perp}(4.2) \simeq 35T$ and $H_{c2}\|(4.2) \simeq 51T$ were observed perpendicular and parallel to the ab plane, respectively. The temperature dependence of $H_{c2}(T)$ is described well by a theory of dirty two-gap superconductivity. Extrapolation of the experimental data to T=0 suggests that $H_{c2}\|(0)$ approaches the paramagnetic limit of $\sim 70T$.

Very high upper critical fields in MgB2 produced by selective tuning of impurity scattering

We report a significant enhancement of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ of different $MgB_2$ samples alloyed with nonmagnetic impurities. By studying films and bulk polycrystals with different resistivities $ρ$, we show a clear trend of $H_{c2}$ increase as $ρ$ increases. One particular high resistivity film had zero-temperature $H_{c2}(0)$ well above the $H_{c2}$ values of competing non-cuprate superconductors such as $Nb_3Sn$ and Nb-Ti. Our high-field transport measurements give record values $H_{c2}^\perp (0) \approx 34T$ and $H_{c2}\|(0) \approx 49 T$ for high resistivity films and $H_{c2}(0)\approx 29 T$ for untextured bulk polycrystals. The highest $H_{c2}$ film also exhibits a significant upward curvature of $H_{c2}(T)$, and temperature dependence of the anisotropy parameter $γ(T) = H_{c2}\|/ H_{c2}^\perp$ opposite to that of single crystals: $γ(T)$ decreases as the temperature decreases, from $γ(T_c) \approx 2$ to $γ(0) \approx 1.5$. This remarkable $H_{c2}$ enhancement and its anomalous temperature dependence are a consequence of the two-gap superconductivity in $MgB_2$, which offers special opportunities for further $H_{c2}$ increase by tuning of the impurity scattering by selective alloying on Mg and B sites. Our experimental results can be explained by a theory of two-gap superconductivity in the dirty limit. The very high values of $H_{c2}(T)$ observed suggest that $MgB_2$ can be made into a versatile, competitive high-field superconductor.

Enhancement of the upper critical field by nonmagnetic impurities in dirty two-gap superconductors

Quasiclassic Uzadel equations for two-band superconductors in the dirty limit with the account of both intraband and interband scattering by nonmagnetic impurities are derived for any anisotropic Fermi surface. From these equations the Ginzburg-Landau equations, and the critical temperature $T_c$ are obtained. An equation for the upper critical field, which determines both the temperature dependence of $H_{c2}(T)$ and the orientational dependence of $H_{c2}(θ)$ as a function of the angle $θ$ between ${\bf H}$ and the c-axis is obtained. It is shown that the shape of the $H_{c2}(T)$ curve essentially depends on the ratio of the intraband electron diffusivities $D_1$ and $D_1$, and can be very different from the standard one-gap dirty limit theory. In particular, the value $H_{c2}(0)$ can considerably exceed $0.7T_cdH_{c2}/dT_c$, which can have important consequences for applications of $MgB_2$. A scaling relation is proposed which enables one to obtain the angular dependence of $H_{c2}(θ)$ from the equation for $H_{c2}$ at ${\bf H}\| c$. It is shown that, depending on the relation between $D_1$ and $D_2$, the ratio of the upper critical field $H_{c2}^\|/H_{c2}^\perp$ for ${\bf H}\| ab$ and ${\bf H}\perp ab$ can both increase and decrease as the temperature decreases. Implications of the obtained results for $MgB_2$ are discussed.

Intrinsic Josephson effect and nonequilibrium soliton structures in two-gap superconductors

We predict a new dynamic state in current-carrying superconductors with multicomponent order parameter. If the current density J exceeds a critical value J_t, an interband breakdown caused by charge imbalance of nonequilibrium quasiparticles occurs. For J > J_t, the electric field penetrating from current leads gives rise to various static and dynamic soliton phase textures, and voltage oscillations similar to the nonstationary Josephson effect. We propose experiments to observe these effects which would probe the multicomponent nature of the superconducting order parameter.

Thickness dependence of critical currents in thin superconductors

Mechanisms of vortex dynamics and pinning and self-field effects which could account for the thickness dependence of the critical current density J_c of superconducting films are addressed. It is shown that at low magnetic fields B, the 2D single-vortex pinning and thermal fluctuations yield J_c proportional to (1/sqrt{d})exp[-(d_m/d)^{1/2}], if the film thickness d is smaller than the pinning correlation length along B. The model describes the dependence of J_c on d observed on YBa_2Cu_3O_7 coated conductors for d < 2(mu)m. Measurements of J_c(d) in strong magnetic fields are proposed to probe whether the dependence of J_c on d is mostly determined by the 2D pinning or changes in the material microstructure as the film gets thicker.

Nonlinear dynamics of vortices in easy flow channels along grain boundaries in superconductors

A theory of nonlinear dynamics of mixed Abrikosov vortices with Josephson cores (AJ vortices) on low-angle grain boundaries (GB) in superconductors is proposed. Dynamics and pinning of AJ vortices determine the in-field current transport through GB and the microwave response of polycrystal in the crucial misorientation range $\vartheta < 20-30^{\circ}$ of the exponential drop of the local critical current density $J_b(\vartheta)$ through GB. An exact solution for an overdamped periodic AJ vortex structure driven along GB by an arbitrary time dependent transport current in a dc magnetic field $H>H_{c1}$ is obtained. The dynamics of the AJ vortex chain is parameterized by solutions of two coupled first order nonlinear differential equations which describe self-consistently the time dependence of the vortex velocity and the AJ core length. Exact formulas for the dc flux flow resistivity $R_f(H)$, and the nonlinear voltage-current characteristics are obtained. Dynamics of the AJ vortex chain driven by superimposed ac and dc currents is considered, and general expressions for a linear complex resistivity $R(ω)$ and dissipation of the ac field are obtained. A flux flow resonance is shown to occur at large dc vortex velocities $v$ for which the imaginary part of $R(ω)$ has peaks at the "washboard" ac frequency $ω_0=2πv/a$, where $a$ is the inter vortex spacing. This resonance can cause peaks and portions with negative differential conductivity on the averaged dc voltage-current (V-I) characteristics. Ac currents of large amplitude cause generation of higher voltage harmonics and phase locking effects which manifest themselves in steps on the averaged dc I-V curves at the Josephson voltages, $n\hbarω/2e$.

Flux flow of Abrikosov-Josephson vortices along grain boundaries in high-temperature superconductors

We show that low-angle grain boundaries (GB) in high-temperature superconductors exhibit intermediate Abrikosov vortices with Josephson cores, whose length $l$ along GB is smaller that the London penetration depth, but larger than the coherence length. We found an exact solution for a periodic vortex structure moving along GB in a magnetic field $H$ and calculated the flux flow resistivity $R_F(H)$, and the nonlinear voltage-current characteristics. The predicted $R_F(H)$ dependence describes well our experimental data on $7^{\circ}$ unirradiated and irradiated $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ bicrystals, from which the core size $l(T)$, and the intrinsic depairing density $J_b(T)$ on nanoscales of few GB dislocations were measured for the first time. The observed temperature dependence of $J_b(T)=J_{b0}(1-T/T_c)^2$ indicates a significant order parameter suppression in current channels between GB dislocation cores.

Magneto-optical studies of the uniform critical state in bulk MgB2

We present a detailed magneto-optical investigation of the magnetic flux penetration in polycrystalline MgB2 slabs made by direct reaction of B and Mg. Our results unambiguously indicate a uniform, Bean critical state magnetization behavior with almost no electromagnetic granularity. From the measured magnetic flux profiles we were able to extract the temperature dependence of the critical current density Jc(T). The Jc(T) value reaches 1.8x10^5 A/cm2 at 10K and 0.12T, in good agreement with global magnetization measurements.
