HighNESS Conceptual Design Report: Volume I

The European Spallation Source, currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is a multidisciplinary international laboratory. Once completed to full specifications, it will operate the world's most powerful pulsed neutron source. Supported by a 3 million Euro Research and Innovation Action within the EU Horizon 2020 program, a design study (HighNESS) has been completed to develop a second neutron source located below the spallation target. Compared to the first source, designed for high cold and thermal brightness, the new source has been optimized to deliver higher intensity, and a shift to longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of cold (CN, 2--20\,Å), very cold (VCN, 10--120\,Å), and ultracold (UCN, ${>}\,{500}$\,Å) neutrons. The second source comprises a large liquid deuterium moderator designed to produce CN and support secondary VCN and UCN sources. Various options have been explored in the proposed designs, aiming for world-leading performance in neutronics. These designs will enable the development of several new instrument concepts and facilitate the implementation of a high-sensitivity neutron-antineutron oscillation experiment (NNBAR). This document serves as the Conceptual Design Report for the HighNESS project, representing its final deliverable.

Low-energy Coulomb excitation of $^{62}$Fe and $^{62}$Mn following in-beam decay of $^{62}$Mn

Sub-barrier Coulomb-excitation was performed on a mixed beam of $^{62}$Mn and $^{62}$Fe, following in-trap $β^{-}$ decay of $^{62}$Mn at REX-ISOLDE, CERN. The trapping and charge breeding times were varied in order to alter the composition of the beam, which was measured by means of an ionisation chamber at the zero-angle position of the Miniball array. A new transition was observed at 418~keV, which has been tentatively associated to a $(2^{+},3^{+})\rightarrow1^{+}_{g.s.}$ transition. This fixes the relative positions of the $β$-decaying $4^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in $^{62}$Mn for the first time. Population of the $2^{+}_{1}$ state was observed in $^{62}$Fe and the cross-section determined by normalisation to the $^{109}$Ag target excitation, confirming the $B(E2)$ value measured in recoil-distance lifetime experiments.

Structural and optical properties of high quality zinc-blende/wurtzite GaAs hetero-nanowires

The structural and optical properties of 3 different kinds of GaAs nanowires with 100% zinc-blende structure and with an average of 30% and 70% wurtzite are presented. A variety of shorter and longer segments of zinc-blende or wurtzite crystal phases are observed by transmission electron microscopy in the nanowires. Sharp photoluminescence lines are observed with emission energies tuned from 1.515 eV down to 1.43 eV when the percentage of wurtzite is increased. The downward shift of the emission peaks can be understood by carrier confinement at the interfaces, in quantum wells and in random short period superlattices existent in these nanowires, assuming a staggered band-offset between wurtzite and zinc-blende GaAs. The latter is confirmed also by time resolved measurements. The extremely local nature of these optical transitions is evidenced also by cathodoluminescence measurements. Raman spectroscopy on single wires shows different strain conditions, depending on the wurtzite content which affects also the band alignments. Finally, the occurrence of the two crystallographic phases is discussed in thermodynamic terms.

On the number of independent adiabatic invariants for gyrating particles

It is pointed out that the three established adiabatic invariants are separating invariants in the sense of Liouville. It is widely claimed that no more than three adiabatic invariants can exist for the motion of a point charge. However, additional independent (not separating) adiabatic invariants do exist. For a force free motion, the components of angular momentum provide two additional constants of motion. This result can be generalized to the Hamilton Jacobi equation. The number of independent constants of motion is reduced if there is a global symmetry. For a gyrating particle, neglecting a gyro helix type of invariant, four 'useful' invariants could exist. A radial drift invariant, corresponding to the average of the radial coordinate of the particle, is a constant of motion for a confined gyrating particle. For the special case of a screw pinch where each gyro center moves on a magnetic flux surface without mirror trapping, the radial drift invariant is the radial coordinate of the gyro center. For a screw pinch, the set of constants of motion consising of the energy, parallel velocity and radial drift invariant is convenient to model the equilibrium. Local Maxwellian distribution functions expressed in this set of invariants are demonstrated to provide MHD-type of equilibria, for which it is straightforward to model the radial profiles of the particle and field components.
