Magneto-optics of dichroic chiral photonic crystals: resonant diffraction transmission and higher-order reflections at grazing angles

Magneto-optical effects in structured anisotropic media have attracted significant attention due to their potential in tunable photonic devices. In particular, dichroic cholesteric liquid crystals (i.e., cholesterics in which the real parts of the local dielectric permeability tensor are equal each other, and the imaginary parts differ) provide a unique system in which absorption anisotropy rather than anisotropy of real pars of the local dielectric permeability controls the optical response. In this work, we investigated the magneto-optical properties of dichroic cholesteric liquid crystals under oblique light incidence. To analyze the optical characteristics, we used the Berreman method, which is a matrix approach to solving Maxwell's equations. The unique properties of such structures were revealed, namely, resonant Bragg diffraction transmission instead of diffraction reflection and higher orders of diffraction reflection under oblique light incidence at grazing angles. It was shown that at light oblique incidence in the presence of an external magnetic field, new Dirac points appear in the spectra of such structures at each order of diffraction reflection. Furthermore, it is shown that an external magnetic field suppresses the shift of the polarization of eigenmodes from circular to linear polarization as the angle of incidence increases. This system can be used as a narrowband filter with a widely tunable wavelength.

Analysis of defect modes in one-dimensional photonic crystals with two defects

In this paper, for the first time, analytical expressions for determination of the wavelength of defect modes (DMs) in one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystals (PCs) with two defect layers (DLs) were obtained from the condition of zero reflection. Analytical formulas on the conditions for the merging of two DMs and on the DMs with zero value of the reflection coefficient were obtained. Different typical 1D PC structures with two DLs were considered and compared, including their DMs behavior. The distribution of electromagnetic field within the first photonic bandgap (PBG) was analyzed for several cases of DM merging and for the different orders of DMs. The results of this research permit the simplification of the analysis of optical sensors and filters based on 1D PCs with two DLs, as well as a more comprehensive understanding of the DM behavior within the PBGs of such PC structures. Furthermore, this paper helps to explain the results obtained by other researchers earlier in this field, too.

Exceptional points and lines and Dirac points and lines in magnetoactive cholesteric liquid crystals

We investigated the properties of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) being in external static magnetic field directed along the helix axis. We have shown that in the case of the wavelength dependence of magneto-optic activity parameter, and in the presence of absorption new features appear in the optics of CLCs. We have shown that in this case new photonic band gaps (PBGs) appear. This new PBG is sensitive to the polarization of the incident light. But if the chirality sign of the polarization of the incident diffracting light for the basic PBG (which exist also at the absence of external magnetic field) is determined only by the chirality sign of the CLC helix, then for the second one it is determined by the external magnetic field direction (i.e., on whether the directions of the external magnetic field and the incident light are parallel, or they are antiparallel). We have shown that in this case besides Dirac points there appear also Dirac lines as well as exceptional points and exceptional lines. And moreover, at some of these points and lines there appear the lines or wide bands of magnetically induced transparency, on others a wide coherent perfect absorption band appears that is insensitive to incident light polarization. And finally on some points the same reflection, transmission and absorption takes place for any polarization of incident light. This system can be applied as tunable narrow-band or broad-band filters and mirrors, a highly tunable broad/narrow-band coherent perfect absorber, transmitter, ideal optical diode, and other devices.

Dirac points, new photonic band gaps and effect of magnetically induced transparency in dichroic cholesteric liquid crystals with wavelength dependent magnetooptical activity parameter

We investigated the properties of dichroic cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) being in external static magnetic field directed along helix axis. We have shown that in the case of the wavelength dependence of magneto-optic activity parameter, new features appear in the optics of dichroic CLCs. We have shown that in this case new Dirac points appear, moreover, at some Dirac points photonic band gaps (PBGs) appear, at others, lines of magnetically induced transparency (MIT). In this case a polarization-sensitive transmission band appears too. At certain values of the helix pitch of the CLC and of the magnitude of the external magnetic field three PBGs of different nature appear, a transmittance band, two narrow lines of MIT and one broadband MIT. This system is non-reciprocal and the nonreciprocity changes over a wide range, it is observed both for reflection and transmittance and for absorption. The soft matter nature of CLCs and their response to external influences lead to easily tunable multifunctional devices that can find a variety of applications. They can apply as tunable narrow-band or broad-band filters and mirrors, a highly tunable broad/narrow-band coherent perfect absorber, transmitter, ideal optical diode, and other devices.

We report the results on theoretical investigation about possible simultaneous laser generation in all, closely spaced modes of chirped photonic crystals layer in all visible region of the spectrum. With the possible ability to control the chirping contrast, it allows to obtain a white laser with a simple system on a chip, which can find wide application.

Defected photonic crystal-based sensor with enhanced performance

We propose an improved structure of an optical biosensor based on a photonic crystal (PC) with a defect layer (DL), which can detect the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in water by defect mode (DM) shift. We investigated 4 types of defective PCs with different arrangements of layers inside the perfect PCs and their impact on the performance of the sensor. The sensitivity and amplitude of DM were examined as a function of DL thickness. Also, the peculiarities of edge modes in the presence of DL were investigated. Finally, we obtained a characteristic equation to determine the wavelengths of DMs for an arbitrary 1D PC with an isotropic defect inside.

And again, about lasing threshold, light localization, and density of states

We investigated numerically the relationship between the lasing threshold, the density of states (DOS), and field localization in 1D photonic crystals (PC) for off-axis laser action. The angular dependence of the corresponding quantities for the two polarizations was obtained, and it was shown that the relationship between the threshold and DOS is complex, especially near the Brewster angle in the case of p-polarization. A strong correlation between the ratio of thresholds and localizations of the two edge modes was found for s-polarization. The results of this work can be used for optimizing lasers based on one-dimensional PCs, both for normal and off-axis lasing.

Optical biosensor based on a photonic crystal with a defective layer designed to determine the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in water

We propose a new optical biosensor based on a photonic crystal with a defect layer, which can determine the SARS-CoV-2 concentration in water by the defect mode shift. Two models of the dependence of the refractive index of the defect layer on the concentration of the pathogen in water were considered. The optimal parameters for the photonic crystal in our device and the optimal thickness of the defect layer were determined. It was also demonstrated that in the presence of absorption in the investigated structure it is much more advantageous to work in the reflection mode compared to the transmission mode. Finally, the wavelength dependence of the defect mode on the SARS-CoV-2 concentration was obtained and the sensitivity of the sensor was determined.

Scattering of a plane wave by an inhomogeneous 1D dielectric layer with gradient refractive index

We propose a new method for calculating reflection and transmission coefficients for an arbitrarily polarized electromagnetic plane wave incident on a one-dimensional dielectric medium of finite thickness and with dielectric permittivity being an arbitrary continuous function of the coordinate. We have shown that the problem of plane wave scattering by an inhomogeneous layer is reduced to a system of first order differential equations that contain the derivative of the refractive index or dielectric permittivity of the layer, which can be used, for example, when searching for an analytical solution. This method also makes it easy to obtain the distribution of the field strength within the layer. The reflection spectra and field distribution obtained using this method were compared with the analytical solution based on Mathieu functions.

Magnetically induced transmission/absorption in chiral liquid crystals

We report the discovery, theoretically, of new effects, namely, the effects of magnetically induced transparency/absorption. The effects are observed in a magnetically active helically structured periodical medium. Changing the external magnetic field and absorption, one can tune the frequency and the linewidth of the transparency/absorption band. We have shown that both effects can be simultaneously observed for two eigenmodes of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) layer. Both effects are nonreciprocal and tunable. They can be observed in the case of the absence of dispersion of the dielectric and the magnetic tensor components, as well as in the case of dispersion dependences of optical parameters of the CLC layer. Comparison of these effects show that while the effect of magnetically induced transparency is observed at wide intervals of variation of the parameters of the CLC layer, the effect of magnetically induced absorption can observe only in very small intervals of these parameters.

Absorption and Emission Dependences on Defect in CLC

The influence of the defect position on absorption and emission in the cholesteric liquid crystal with an isotropic defect inside is studied. It is shown that for non-diffracting circularly polarized incident light absorption/emission is maximum if the defect is in the centre of the system; and for diffracting circularly polarized incident light absorption/emission is maximum if the defect is shifted from the centre of the system to its left border from where light is incident. The influence of anisotropic absorption in the cholesteric liquid crystal layer on photonic states of density was investigated, too.

How Magnetic Field Inhomogeneity of Plane Wiggler Affects Spontaneous Radiation of Electrons

The spectral distribution of spontaneous emission of electrons moving in a plane wiggler with inhomogeneous magnetic field is calculated. We show that electrons do complicated motion consisting of slow(strophotron) and fast(undulator) parts. The equations of motion are averaged over fast undulator part and we obtain equations for connected motion. It is shown, that the account of inhomogenity of the magnetic field leads to appearance of additional peaks in the spectral distribution of spontaneous radiation.

Effect of Anisotropy on Defect Mode Peculiariries in Chiral Liquid Crystals

The effect of anisotropy on defect mode peculiarities in cholesteric liquid crystals is investigated. The problem is solved by Ambartsumians layer addition modified method. Two cases are considered. In the first case, it is assumed that the defect layer is not absorbing and the effect of refraction anisotropy on the reflection, relative photonic density of states and the total field intensity aroused in the defect layer are studied . In the second case, defect layer is assumed to be isotropic for refraction and anisotropic for absorption, and the influence of defect layer absorption anisotropy on reflection, absorption, relative photonic density of states and the total field intensity aroused in the defect layer are investigated.

The mixing of the levels of a compound nucleus in the field of a high-intensity light wave is considered. The cross sections for inelastic neutron scattering and radiative capture are computed with allowance for this effect. The effect of the electron shell on the effective charge for the dipole interaction between the neutron + nucleus system and the external electromagnetic field is taken into consideration.

The Influence of Absorption and Gain on Photonic Density of States

The photonic density of states (PDS) of the eigen polarizations (EPs) in cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cells are calculated. The exact analytic expressions for the reflection and transmission matrices for the finite thickness CLC layer are used. We obtained the dependences for the PDS on the parameters characterizing absorption and gain, as well as the CLC cell thickness, CLC local dielectric anisotropy and refractive index of CLC layer surrounding. The possibility of connections between the PDS and the density of the light energy accumulated in the medium are investigated and it was shown that these characteristics have analogous spectra and, besides, the influences of the problem parameters on these characteristics also were analogous. We have shown, that the decrement of the refractive index of CLC layer surroundings leads to a sharp increase of the maximum PDS and, consequently, leads to a sharp decrement of the laser excitation threshold. The PDS dependence on the refraction coefficients of the substrates of the Fabry-Perot resonator filled with a CLC planar layer was investigated, too. It is shown that the subject system can work as a low threshold laser or a multi-position trigger.

The Effect of Defect Layer on Lasing in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal

The photonic density of states (PDS) of eigen polarizations (EPs) in cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cells with a defect layer inside are calculated. The dependences for the PDS and light intensity in the defect layer on the parameters characterizing absorption and gain are obtained. We investigated the possibility of connections between the PDS and the density of the light energy accumulated in the system. The influence of the defect layer and CLC layer on the PDS are investigated. It is shown that the PDS is maximum when the defect is in the centre of the system. We showed also that the subject system can work as a low threshold laser, a multiposition trigger, filter, etc.
