Probe Chiral Magnetic Effect with Signed Balance Function

In this paper a pair of observables are proposed as alternative ways, by examining the fluctuation of net momentum-ordering of charged pairs, to study the charge separation induced by the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in relativistic heavy ion collisions. They are, the out-of-plane to in-plane ratio of fluctuation of the difference between signed balance functions measured in pair's rest frame, and the ratio of it to similar measurement made in the laboratory frame. Both observables have been studied with simulations including flow-related backgrounds, and for the first time, backgrounds that are related to resonance's global spin alignment. The two observables have similar positive responses to signal, and opposite, limited responses to identifiable backgrounds arising from resonance flow and spin alignment. Both observables have also been tested with two realistic models, namely, a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model and the anomalous-viscous fluid dynamics (AVFD) model. These two observables, when cross examined, will provide useful insights in the study of CME-induced charge separation.

Effect of magnetic fields on pairs of oppositely charged particles in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

The initial strong magnetic field produced in high-energy nuclear collisions will distort the distribution of the relative angle between oppositely charged particles within a pair. In this paper, two experimental observables are examined to quantify such effects: one based on the framework for detecting the hyperon global polarization, and the other based on the balance function. We also discuss the optimization of the signal, as well as the expected magnitude ranges for the two observables.

Practical considerations for measuring global spin alignment of vector mesons in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Global spin alignment of vector mesons is a sensitive probe of system vorticity and particle production mechanism in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The measurement of global spin alignment is gaining increasing interest and deserves careful considerations. In this paper, we lay out a few practical issues that need to be taken care of when measuring global spin alignment of vector mesons. They are, the correction for event plane resolution, reconciling measurements made with different event planes, the correction for the effect of finite acceptance in pseudorapidity, and the consideration for measuring the azimuthal angle dependence. Insights and methodologies offered in this paper will help experiments to measure the global spin alignment properly and accurately.

Workshop on Excited Hyperons in QCD Thermodynamics at Freeze-Out (YSTAR2016) Mini-Proceedings

This Workshop brought top experts, researchers, postdocs, and students from high-energy heavy ion interactions, lattice QCD and hadronic physics communities together. YSTAR2016 discussed the impact of "missing" hyperon resonances on QCD thermodynamics, on freeze-out in heavy ion collisions, on the evolution of early universe, and on the spectroscopy of strange particles. Recent studies that compared lattice QCD predictions of thermodynamic properties of quark-gluon plasma at freeze-out with calculations based on statistical hadron resonance gas models as well as experimentally measured ratios between yields of different hadron species in heavy ion collisions provide indirect evidence for the presence of "missing" resonances in all of these contexts. The aim of the YSTAR2016 Workshop was to sharpen these comparisons and advance our understanding of the formation of strange hadrons from quarks and gluons microseconds after the Big Bang and in todays experiments at LHC and RHIC as well as at future facilities like FAIR, J-PARC and KL at JLab. It was concluded that the new initiative to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons at JLab will make a bridge between the hardron spectroscopy, heavy-ion experiments and lattice QCD studies addressing some major issues related to thermodynamics of the early universe and cosmology in general.

Procedure for measuring particle's circular polarization variation with respect to the reaction plane in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The EM field pattern created by spectators in relativistic heavy-ion collisions plants a seed of positive (negative) magnetic helicity in the hemisphere above (below) the reaction plane. Owing to the chiral anomaly, the magnetic helicity interacts with the fermionic helicity of the collision system, and causes photons emitted in upper- and lower-hemispheres to have different preferences in the circular polarization. In this paper, we lay down a procedure to measure the variation of the circular polarization w.r.t the reaction plane in relativistic heavy-ion collisions for massless photons, as well as similar polarization patterns for vector mesons decaying into two daughters. We propose to study the yield differentially and compare the yield between upper- and lower-hemispheres in order to identify and quantify such effects.

Parameterization of Deformed Nuclei for Glauber Modeling in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

The density distributions of large nuclei are typically modeled with a Woods-Saxon distribution characterized by a radius $R_{0}$ and skin depth $a$. Deformation parameters $β$ are then introduced to describe non-spherical nuclei using an expansion in spherical harmonics $R_{0}(1+β_2Y^0_2+β_4Y^0_4)$. But when a nucleus is non-spherical, the $R_{0}$ and $a$ inferred from electron scattering experiments that integrate over all nuclear orientations cannot be used directly as the parameters in the Woods-Saxon distribution. In addition, the $β_2$ values typically derived from the reduced electric quadrupole transition probability B(E2)$\uparrow$ are not directly related to the $β_2$ values used in the spherical harmonic expansion. B(E2)$\uparrow$ is more accurately related to the intrinsic quadrupole moment $Q_{0}$ than to $β_2$. One can however calculate $Q_0$ for a given $β_2$ and then derive B(E2)$\uparrow$ from $Q_0$. In this paper we calculate and tabulate the $R_0$, $a$, and $β_2$ values that when used in a Woods-Saxon distribution, will give results consistent with electron scattering data. We then present calculations of the eccentricity $\varepsilon_2$ and $\varepsilon_3$ with the new and old parameters. We demonstrate that $\varepsilon_3$ is particularly sensitive to $a$ and argue that using the incorrect value of $a$ has important implications for the extraction of $η/s$ from the QGP created in Heavy Ion collisions.

Energy Dependence of Directed Flow in Au+Au Collisions from a Multi-phase Transport Model

The directed flow of charged hadron and identified particles has been studied in the framework of a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model, for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200, 130, 62.4, 39, 17.2 and 9.2 GeV. The rapidity, centrality and energy dependence of directed flow for charged particles over a wide rapidity range are presented. AMPT model gives the correct $v_1(y)$ slope, as well as its trend as a function of energy, while it underestimates the magnitude. Within the AMPT model, the proton $v_1$ slope is found to change its sign when the energy increases to 130 GeV - a feature that is consistent with ``anti-flow''. Hadronic re-scattering is found having little effect on $v_1$ at top RHIC energies. These studies can help us to understand the collective dynamics at early times in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and they can also be served as references for the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program.

New Challenges to Hydrodynamics from Azimuthal Anisotropy at RHIC

This paper presents $v_{4}/v_{2}^2$ ratio as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{t}$), pseudorapidity ($η$) and collision centrality in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). It is found that $v_{4}/v_{2}^2$ is larger than Hydrodynamic calculations, the centrality and transverse dependence of this ratio can not be fully described by Hydrodynamics, and the pseudorapidity dependence is opposite to what one expects from Hydrodynamics. The $p_{t}$ dependence of $v_{1}$ is also presented. It is found that $v_{1}(p_{t})$ for $|η|<1.3$ changes sign, and two possible explanations of the sign change are discussed.

Strangelet search at RHIC

Two position sensitive Shower Maximum Detector (SMDs) for Zero-Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs) were installed by STAR before run 2004 at both upstream and downstream from the interaction point along the beam axis where particles with small rigidity are swept away by strong magnetic field. The ZDC-SMDs provides information about neutral energy deposition as a function of transverse position in ZDCs. We report the preliminary results of strangelet search from a triggered data-set sampling 100 million Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy.

Anisotropic flow at RHIC

We present the first measurement of directed flow ($v_1$) at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). $v_1$ is found to be consistent with zero at pseudorapidities $η$ from -1.2 to 1.2, then rises to the level of a couple of percent over the range $2.4 < |η| < 4$. The latter observation is similar to that from NA49 if the SPS rapidities are shifted by the difference in beam rapidity between RHIC and SPS. We studied the evolution of elliptic flow from p+p collisions through d+Au collision, and onto Au+Au collisions. Measurements of higher harmonics are presented and discussed.

Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV

We present the first measurement of directed flow ($v_1$) at RHIC. $v_1$ is found to be consistent with zero at pseudorapidities $η$ from -1.2 to 1.2, then rises to the level of a couple of percent over the range $2.4 < |η| < 4$. The latter observation is similar to data from NA49 if the SPS rapidities are shifted by the difference in beam rapidity between RHIC and SPS. Back-to-back jets emitted out-of-plane are found to be suppressed more if compared to those emitted in-plane, which is consistent with {\it jet quenching}. Using the scalar product method, we systematically compared azimuthal correlations from p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions. Flow and non-flow from these three different collision systems are discussed.

Flow and non-flow correlations from four-particle multiplets in STAR

Elliptic flow results are presented for Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130$ GeV in RHIC. This signal is investigated as a function of transverse momentum, rapidity and centrality. Results from four-particle correlation analysis, which can filter out contributions to the flow signal from correlations unrelated to the event reaction plane (``non-flow''), are presented and compared to the conventional method, in which non-flow effects are treated as part of the systematic uncertainty.
