Asymptotics of Recurrence Relation Coefficients, Hankel Determinant Ratios, and Root Products Associated with Laurent Polynomials Orthogonal with Respect to Varying Exponential Weights

Orthogonalisation of the (ordered) base $\lbrace 1,z^{-1},z,z^{-2},z^{2}, >...c,z^{-k},z^{k},...c \rbrace$ with respect to the real inner product $(f,g) \mapsto \int_{\mathbb{R}}f(s)g(s) \exp (-\mathscr{N} V(s)) \md s$, $\mathscr{N} \in \mathbb{N}$, where $V$ is real analytic on $\mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}$, $\lim_{| x | \to \infty}(V(x)/ \ln (x^{2} + 1)) = +\infty$, and $\lim_{| x | \to 0} (V(x)/\ln (x^{-2} + 1)) = +\infty$, yields the even degree and odd degree orthonormal Laurent polynomials (OLPs), $ϕ_{2n}(z) = \sum_{k=-n}^{n} ξ^{(2n)}_{k}z^{k}$, with $ξ^{(2n)}_{n} > 0$, and $ϕ_{2n+1}(z) = \sum_{k=-n-1}^{n} ξ^{(2n+1)}_{k}z^{k}$, with $ξ^{(2n+1)}_{-n-1} > 0$, respectively. Associated with the even degree and odd degree OLPs are two pairs of three- and five-term recurrence relations. Asymptotics in the double-scaling limit as $\mathscr{N},n \to \infty$ such that $\mathscr{N}/n = 1 + o(1)$ of the coefficients of these two pairs of recurrence relations, Hankel determinant ratios, and the products of the (real) roots of the OLPs are obtained by formulating the even degree and odd degree OLP problems as matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems on $\mathbb{R}$, and then extracting the large-N behaviours by applying the non-linear steepest-descent method introduced in [1] and further developed in [2,3].

Asymptotics of Laurent Polynomials of Odd Degree Orthogonal with Respect to Varying Exponential Weights

Let $Λ^{\mathbb{R}}$ denote the linear space over $\mathbb{R}$ spanned by $z^{k}$, $k \in \mathbb{Z}$. Define the real inner product (with varying exponential weights) $<\boldsymbol{\cdot},\boldsymbol{\cdot} >_{\mathscr{L}} \colon Λ^{\mathbb{R}} \times Λ^{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathbb{R}$, $(f,g) \mapsto \int_{\mathbb{R}}f(s)g(s) \exp (-\mathscr{N} V(s)) \md s$, $\mathscr{N} \in \mathbb{N}$, where the external field $V$ satisfies: (i) $V$ is real analytic on $\mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}$; (ii) $\lim_{| x | \to \infty}(V(x)/\ln (x^{2} + 1)) = +\infty$; and (iii) $\lim_{| x | \to 0}(V(x)/\ln (x^{-2} + 1)) = +\infty$. Connection Formulae for Asymptotics of Solutions of the Degenerate Third Painlevé Equation. I

The degenerate third Painlevé equation, $u^{\prime \prime} = \frac{(u^{\prime})^{2}}{u} - \frac{u^{\prime}}τ + \frac{1}τ(-8 εu^{2} + 2ab) + \frac{b^{2}}{u}$, where $ε,b \in \mathbb{R}$, and $a \in \mathbb{C}$, and the associated tau-function are studied via the Isomonodromy Deformation Method. Connection formulae for asymptotics of the general as $τ\to \pm 0$ and $\pm i0$ solution and general regular as $τ\to \pm \infty$ and $\pm i \infty$ solution are obtained.

Long-Time Asymptotics of Solutions to the Cauchy Problem for the Defocusing Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation with Finite-Density Initial Data. II. Dark Solitons on Continua

For Lax-pair isospectral deformations whose associated spectrum, for given initial data, consists of the disjoint union of a finitely denumerable discrete spectrum (solitons) and a continuous spectrum (continuum), the matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem approach is used to derive the leading-order asymptotics as $| t | \to \infty$ $(x/t \sim \mathcal{O} (1))$ of solutions $(u = u(x,t))$ to the Cauchy problem for the defocusing non-linear Schrödinger equation (D${}_{f}$NLSE), $\mi \partial_{t}u + \partial_{x}^{2}u - 2(| u |^{2} - 1) u = 0$, with finite-density initial data $u(x,0) =_{x \to \pm \infty} \exp (\tfrac{\mi (1 \mp 1) θ}{2})(1 + o(1))$, $θ\in [0,2π)$. The D${}_{f}$NLSE dark soliton position shifts in the presence of the continuum are also obtained.

Long-Time Asymptotics of Solutions to the Cauchy Problem for the Defocusing Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation with Finite Density Initial Data. I. Solitonless Sector

The methodology of the Riemann-Hilbert (RH) factorisation approach for Lax-pair isospectral deformations is used to derive, in the solitonless sector, the leading-order asymptotics as $t \to \pm \infty$ $(x/t \sim \mathcal{O}(1))$ of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the defocusing non-linear Schrödinger equation (D${}_{f}$NLSE), $\mi \partial_{t}u +\partial_{x}^{2}u-2(| u |^{2}-1)u=0$, with (finite-density) initial data $u(x,0)=_{x \to \pm \infty} \exp (\tfrac{\mi (1 \mp 1) θ}{2})(1+ o(1))$, $θ\in [0,2 π)$. A limiting case of these asymptotics related to the RH problem for the Painlevé II equation, or one of its special reductions, is also identified.

Higher Order Asymptotics of the Modified Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation

Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorisation approach for non-linear evolution systems which take the form of Lax-pair isospectral deformations, the higher order asymptotics as $t \to \pm \infty$ $(x/t \sim {\cal O}(1))$ of the solution to the Cauchy problem for the modified non-linear Schrödinger equation, $i \partial_{t} u + {1/2} \partial_{x}^{2} u + | u |^{2} u + i s \partial_{x} (| u |^{2} u) = 0$, $s \in \Bbb R_{> 0}$, which is a model for non-linear pulse propagation in optical fibres in the subpicosecond time scale, are obtained: also derived are analogous results for two gauge-equivalent non-linear evolution equations; in particular, the derivative non-linear Schrödinger equation, $i \partial_{t} q + \partial_{x}^{2} q - i \partial_{x}(| q |^{2} q) = 0$.

Asymptotics of Solutions to the Modified Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation: Solitons on a Non-Vanishing Continuous Background

Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorization approach for nonlinear evolution systems which take the form of Lax-pair isospectral deformations and whose corresponding Lax operators contain both discrete and continuous spectra, the leading-order asymptotics as $t \to \pm \infty$ of the solution to the Cauchy problem for the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $i \partial_{t} u + {1/2} \partial_{x}^{2} u + | u |^{2} u + i s \partial_{x} (| u |^{2} u) = 0$, $s \in \Bbb R_{>0}$, which is a model for nonlinear pulse propagation in optical fibers in the subpicosecond time scale, are obtained: also derived are analogous results for two gauge-equivalent nonlinear evolution equations; in particular, the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $i \partial_{t} q + \partial_{x}^{2} q - i \partial_{x} (| q |^{2} q) = 0$. As an application of these asymptotic results, explicit expressions for position and phase shifts of solitons in the presence of the continuous spectrum are calculated.

Leading Order Temporal Asymptotics of the Modified Non-Linear Schrodinger Equation: Solitonless Sector

Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorisation approach for non-linear evolution equations (NLEEs) integrable in the sense of the inverse scattering method, we obtain, in the solitonless sector, the leading-order asymptotics as $t$ tends to plus and minus infinity of the solution to the Cauchy initial-value problem for the modified non-linear Schrodinger equation: also obtained are analogous results for two gauge-equivalent NLEEs; in particular, the derivative non-linear Schrodinger equation.
