Alternating Optimization for Joint Resource Allocation in Full-Duplex Multi-Sector Fluid Antenna-Enabled Near-Field Systems

This paper proposes a full duplex fluid antenna near field system (FD-FANS) with a multi-sector antenna array that jointly exploits resource allocation, antenna mobility, and group-based transmitting (TX) and receiving (RX) partitioning. A spherical wave uplink downlink channel is established that accounts for residual self interference (SI), wireless energy transfer (WET), and geometric constraints on antenna motion. Within the FD-FANS framework, an efficient protocol is devised to enable simultaneous downlink energy transmission (DET) and uplink data transmission (UDT) at the base station (BS). Furthermore, we formulate, for both perfect and imperfect SI cancellation (SIC), a weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem over time power allocation, antenna positions, and binary group selection, under practical average and peak power limits, per antenna box constraints, minimum spacing, and a half TX half RX balance. To tackle the resulting non convex mixed integer design, we develop an efficient alternating optimization (AO) framework based on majorization minimization successive convex approximation (MM SCA). The proposed algorithm monotonically improves the objective and converges to a stationary solution of a continuous relaxation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves consistent performance gains over several benchmark designs, including half duplex FANS (HD FANS), FD fixed position antenna near field system (FD FPANS), non-grouped FD FANS, and far field counterparts, in terms of average sum rate (ASR), energy efficiency (EE), and user fairness, while exhibiting robustness to residual SI and channel uncertainty.

Goal-oriented Semantic Communications for Metaverse Construction via Generative AI and Optimal Transport

The emergence of the metaverse has boosted productivity and creativity, driving real-time updates and personalized content, which will substantially increase data traffic. However, current bit-oriented communication networks struggle to manage this high volume of dynamic information, restricting metaverse applications interactivity. To address this research gap, we propose a goal-oriented semantic communication (GSC) framework for metaverse. Building on an existing metaverse wireless construction task, our proposed GSC framework includes an hourglass network-based (HgNet) encoder to extract semantic information of objects in the metaverse; and a semantic decoder that uses this extracted information to reconstruct the metaverse content after wireless transmission, enabling efficient communication and real-time object behaviour updates to the scenery for metaverse construction task. To overcome the wireless channel noise at the receiver, we design an optimal transport (OT)-enabled semantic denoiser, which enhances the accuracy of metaverse scenery through wireless communication. Experimental results show that compared to the conventional metaverse construction, our proposed GSC framework significantly reduces wireless metaverse construction latency by 92.6\%, while improving metaverse object status accuracy and viewing experience by 45.6\% and 44.7\%, respectively.

Goal-oriented Semantic Communications for Robotic Waypoint Transmission: The Value and Age of Information Approach

The ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) service of the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication network struggles to support safe robot operation. Nowadays, the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication network is proposed to provide hyper-reliable and low-latency communication to enable safer control for robots. However, current 5G/ 6G research mainly focused on improving communication performance, while the robotics community mostly assumed communication to be ideal. To jointly consider communication and robotic control with a focus on the specific robotic task, we propose goal-oriented semantic communication in robotic control (GSRC) to exploit the context of data and its importance in achieving the task at both transmitter and receiver. At the transmitter, we propose a deep reinforcement learning algorithm to generate optimal control and command (C&C) data and a proactive repetition scheme (DeepPro) to increase the successful transmission probability. At the receiver, we design the value of information (VoI) and age of information (AoI) based queue ordering mechanism (VA-QOM) to rank the queue based on the semantic information extracted from AoI and VoI. The simulation results validate that our proposed GSRC framework achieves a 91.5% improvement in the mean square error compared to the traditional unmanned aerial vehicle control framework.

Goal-oriented Semantic Communications for Avatar-centric Augmented Reality

Upon the advent of the emerging metaverse and its related applications in Augmented Reality (AR), the current bit-oriented network struggles to support real-time changes for the vast amount of associated information, hindering its development. Thus, a critical revolution in the Sixth Generation (6G) networks is envisioned through the joint exploitation of information context and its importance to the task, leading to a communication paradigm shift towards semantic and effectiveness levels. However, current research has not yet proposed any explicit and systematic communication framework for AR applications that incorporate these two levels. To fill this research gap, this paper presents a task-oriented and semantics-aware communication framework for augmented reality (TSAR) to enhance communication efficiency and effectiveness in 6G. Specifically, we first analyse the traditional wireless AR point cloud communication framework and then summarize our proposed semantic information along with the end-to-end wireless communication. We then detail the design blocks of the TSAR framework, covering both semantic and effectiveness levels. Finally, numerous experiments have been conducted to demonstrate that, compared to the traditional point cloud communication framework, our proposed TSAR significantly reduces wireless AR application transmission latency by 95.6%, while improving communication effectiveness in geometry and color aspects by up to 82.4% and 20.4%, respectively.

Radio Resource Management for Cellular-Connected UAV: A Learning Approach

Integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into existing cellular networks encounters lots of challenges, among which one of the most striking concerns is how to achieve harmonious coexistence of aerial transceivers, inter alia, UAVs, and terrestrial user equipments (UEs). In this paper, a cellular-connected UAV network is focused, where multiple UAVs receive messages from base stations (BSs) in the down-link, while BSs are serving ground UEs in their cells. For effectively managing inter-cell interferences (ICIs) among UEs due to intense reuse of time-frequency resource block (RB) resource, a first $p$-tier based RB coordination criterion is proposed and adopted. Then, to enhance wireless transmission quality for UAVs while protecting terrestrial UEs from being interfered by ground-to-air (G2A) transmissions, a radio resource management (RRM) problem of joint dynamic RB coordination and time-varying beamforming design minimizing UAV's ergodic outage duration (EOD) is investigated. To cope with conventional optimization techniques' inefficiency in solving the formulated RRM problem, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-aided solution is initiated, where deep double duelling Q network (D3QN) and twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) are invoked to deal with RB coordination in discrete action domain and beamforming design in continuous action regime, respectively. The hybrid D3QN-TD3 solution is trained via interacting with the considered outer and inner environments in an online centralized manner so that it can then help achieve the suboptimal EOD minimization performance during its offline decentralized exploitation phase. Simulation results have illustrated the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid D3QN-TD3 algorithm, compared to several representative baselines.

Correlation-aware Cooperative Multigroup Broadcast 360° Video Delivery Network: A Hierarchical Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

With the stringent requirement of receiving video from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from anywhere in the stadium of sports events and the significant-high per-cell throughput for video transmission to virtual reality (VR) users, a promising solution is a cell-free multi-group broadcast (CF-MB) network with cooperative reception and broadcast access points (AP). To explore the benefit of broadcasting user-correlated decode-dependent video resources to spatially correlated VR users, the network should dynamically schedule the video and cluster APs into virtual cells for a different group of VR users with overlapped video requests. By decomposition the problem into scheduling and association sub-problems, we first introduce the conventional non-learning-based scheduling and association algorithms, and a centralized deep reinforcement learning (DRL) association approach based on the rainbow agent with a convolutional neural network (CNN) to generate decisions from observation. To reduce its complexity, we then decompose the association problem into multiple sub-problems, resulting in a networked-distributed Partially Observable Markov decision process (ND-POMDP). To solve it, we propose a multi-agent deep DRL algorithm. To jointly solve the coupled association and scheduling problems, we further develop a hierarchical federated DRL algorithm with scheduler as meta-controller, and association as the controller. Our simulation results shown that our CF-MB network can effectively handle real-time video transmission from UAVs to VR users. Our proposed learning architectures is effective and scalable for a high-dimensional cooperative association problem with increasing APs and VR users. Also, our proposed algorithms outperform non-learning based methods with significant performance improvement.

Scalable Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning Algorithm for Wireless Networks

Scalability is the key roadstone towards the application of cooperative intelligent algorithms in large-scale networks. Reinforcement learning (RL) is known as model-free and high efficient intelligent algorithm for communication problems and proved useful in the communication network. However, when coming to large-scale networks with limited centralization, it is not possible to employ a centralized entity to perform joint real-time decision making for entire network. This introduces the scalability challenges, while multi-agent reinforcement shows the opportunity to cope this challenges and extend the intelligent algorithm to cooperative large-scale network. In this paper, we introduce the federated mean-field multi-agent reinforcement learning structure to capture the problem in large scale multi-agent communication scenarios, where agents share parameters to form consistency. We present the theoretical basis of our architecture and show the influence of federated frequency with an informational multi-agent model. We then exam the performance of our architecture with a coordinated multi-point environment which requires handshakes between neighbour access-points to realise the cooperation gain. Our result shows that the learning structure can effectively solve the cooperation problem in a large scale network with decent scalability. We also show the effectiveness of federated algorithms and highlight the importance of maintaining personality in each access-point.

Path Planning for Cellular-Connected UAV: A DRL Solution with Quantum-Inspired Experience Replay

In cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network, a minimization problem on the weighted sum of time cost and expected outage duration is considered. Taking advantage of UAV's adjustable mobility, an intelligent UAV navigation approach is formulated to achieve the aforementioned optimization goal. Specifically, after mapping the navigation task into a Markov decision process (MDP), a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) solution with novel quantum-inspired experience replay (QiER) framework is proposed to help the UAV find the optimal flying direction within each time slot, and thus the designed trajectory towards the destination can be generated. Via relating experienced transition's importance to its associated quantum bit (qubit) and applying Grover iteration based amplitude amplification technique, the proposed DRL-QiER solution commits a better trade-off between sampling priority and diversity. Compared to several representative baselines, the effectiveness and supremacy of the proposed DRL-QiER solution are demonstrated and validated in numerical results.

Intelligent Trajectory Planning in UAV-mounted Wireless Networks: A Quantum-Inspired Reinforcement Learning Perspective

In this paper, we consider a wireless uplink transmission scenario in which an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) serves as an aerial base station collecting data from ground users. To optimize the expected sum uplink transmit rate without any prior knowledge of ground users (e.g., locations, channel state information and transmit power), the trajectory planning problem is optimized via the quantum-inspired reinforcement learning (QiRL) approach. Specifically, the QiRL method adopts novel probabilistic action selection policy and new reinforcement strategy, which are inspired by the collapse phenomenon and amplitude amplification in quantum computation theory, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed QiRL solution can offer natural balancing between exploration and exploitation via ranking collapse probabilities of possible actions, compared to the traditional reinforcement learning approaches which are highly dependent on tuned exploration parameters.

A Vision of XR-aided Teleoperation System Towards 5G/B5G

Extended Reality (XR)-aided teleoperation has shown its potential in improving operating efficiency in mission-critical, rich-information and complex scenarios. The multi-sensory XR devices introduce several new types of traffic with unique quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, which are usually defined by three measures---human perception, corresponding sensors, and present devices. To fulfil these requirements, cellular-supported wireless connectivity can be a promising solution that can largely benefit the Robot-to-XR and the XR-to-Robot links. In this article, we present industrial and piloting use cases and identify the service bottleneck of each case. We then cover the QoS of Robot-XR and XR-Robot links by summarizing the sensors' parameters and processing procedures. To realise these use cases, we introduce potential solutions for each case with cellular connections. Finally, we build testbeds to investigate the effectiveness of supporting our proposed links using current wireless topologies.

Cellular-Connected Wireless Virtual Reality: Requirements, Challenges, and Solutions

Cellular-connected wireless connectivity provides new opportunities for virtual reality(VR) to offer seamless user experience from anywhere at anytime. To realize this vision, the quality-of-service (QoS) for wireless VR needs to be carefully defined to reflect human perception requirements. In this paper, we first identify the primary drivers of VR systems, in terms of applications and use cases. We then map the human perception requirements to corresponding QoS requirements for four phases of VR technology development. To shed light on how to provide short/long-range mobility for VR services, we further list four main use cases for cellular-connected wireless VR and identify their unique research challenges along with their corresponding enabling technologies and solutions in 5G systems and beyond. Last but not least, we present a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution and the unique QoS performance requirements of VR transmission compared with that of traditional video service in cellular networks.

Harvest-and-Opportunistically-Relay: Analyses on Transmission Outage and Covertness

For enhancing transmission performance, privacy level and energy manipulating efficiency of wireless networks, this paper initiates a novel simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) full-duplex (FD) relaying protocol, termed harvest-and-opportunistically-relay (HOR). In the proposed HOR protocol, the relay can work opportunistically in either pure energy harvesting (PEH) or the FD SWIPT mode. Due to the FD characteristics, the dynamic fluctuation of R's residual energy is difficult to quantify and track. To solve this problem, we apply a novel discrete-state Markov Chain (MC) method in which the practical finite-capacity energy storage is considered. Furthermore, to improve the privacy level of the proposed HOR relaying system, covert transmission performance analysis is developed and investigated, where closed-form expressions of optimal detection threshold and minimum detection error probability are derived. Last but not least, with the aid of stationary distribution of the MC, closed-form expression of transmission outage probability is calculated, based on which transmission outage performance is analyzed. Numerical results have validated the correctness of analyses on transmission outage and covert communication. The impacts of key system parameters on the performance of transmission outage and covert communication are given and discussed. Based on mathematical analysis and numerical results, it is fair to say that the proposed HOR model is able to not only reliably enhance the transmission performance via smartly managing residual energy but also efficiently improve the privacy level of the legitimate transmission party via dynamically adjust the optimal detection threshold.

Realizing the Tactile Internet: Haptic Communications over Next Generation 5G Cellular Networks

Prior Internet designs encompassed the fixed, mobile and lately the things Internet. In a natural evolution to these, the notion of the Tactile Internet is emerging which allows one to transmit touch and actuation in real-time. With voice and data communications driving the designs of the current Internets, the Tactile Internet will enable haptic communications, which in turn will be a paradigm shift in how skills and labor are digitally delivered globally. Design efforts for both the Tactile Internet and the underlying haptic communications are in its infancy. The aim of this article is thus to review some of the most stringent design challenges, as well as proposing first avenues for specific solutions to enable the Tactile Internet revolution.

On Practical Aspects of Mobile Data Offloading to Wi-Fi Networks

Data traffic over cellular networks is exhibiting an ongoing exponential growth, increasing by an order of magnitude every year and has already surpassed voice traffic. This increase in data traffic demand has led to a need for solutions to enhance capacity provision, whereby traffic offloading to Wi-Fi is one means that can enhance realised capacity. Though offloading to Wi-Fi networks has matured over the years, a number of challenges are still being faced by operators to its realization. In this article, we carry out a survey of the practical challenges faced by operators in data traffic offloading to Wi-Fi networks. We also provide recommendations to successfully address these challenges.

A Green Perspective on Wi-Fi Offloading

Due to increased energy consumption and carbon emissions of the ICT industry, operators worldwide are focusing on reducing energy consumption of their networks from financial as well as corporate responsibility perspectives. The subject of green or energy efficient operation of cellular access network has attracted a lot of attention in the research community recently. In this regard, dynamically powering down the radio network equipment has emerged as a promising solution. In literature, research around this type of techniques has mainly focused on quantifying the energy saving potential. However, little efforts have been made towards practical realization of these energy saving concepts. On the other hand, Wi-Fi networks are undergoing a paradigm shift towards ubiquity. The main objective of this paper is to provide novel mechanisms for practically realizing the concept of improving power efficiency in the cellular access network through opportunistically offloading users to Wi- Fi networks. These mechanisms are based on the principles of cognitive network management. Performance evaluation shows the potential of proposed mechanisms as a viable solution for achieving energy efficiency in the cellular access network.
