D7-Brane Motion from M-Theory Cycles and Obstructions in the Weak Coupling Limit

Motivated by the desire to do proper model building with D7-branes and fluxes, we study the motion of D7-branes on a Calabi-Yau orientifold from the perspective of F-theory. We consider this approach promising since, by working effectively with an elliptically fibred M-theory compactification, the explicit positioning of D7-branes by (M-theory) fluxes is straightforward. The locations of D7-branes are encoded in the periods of certain M-theory cycles, which allows for a very explicit understanding of the moduli space of D7-brane motion. The picture of moving D7-branes on a fixed underlying space relies on negligible backreaction, which can be ensured in Sen's weak coupling limit. However, even in this limit we find certain 'physics obstructions' which reduce the freedom of the D7-brane motion as compared to the motion of holomorphic submanifolds in the orientifold background. These obstructions originate in the intersections of D7-branes and O7-planes, where the type IIB coupling can not remain weak. We illustrate this effect for D7-brane models on CP^1 x CP^1 (the Bianchi-Sagnotti-Gimon-Polchinski model) and on CP^2. Furthermore, in the simple example of 16 D7-branes and 4 O7-planes on CP^1 (F-theory on K3), we obtain a completely explicit parameterization of the moduli space in terms of periods of integral M-theory cycles. In the weak coupling limit, D7-brane motion factorizes from the geometric deformations of the base space.

Sequestered Dark Matter

We show that hidden-sector dark matter is a generic feature of the type IIB string theory landscape and that its lifetime may allow for a discovery through the observation of very energetic gamma-rays produced in the decay. Throats or, equivalently, conformally sequestered hidden sectors are common in flux compactifications and the energy deposited in these sectors can be calculated if the reheating temperature of the standard model sector is known. Assuming that throats with various warp factors are available in the compact manifold, we determine which throats maximize the late-time abundance of sequestered dark matter. For such throats, this abundance agrees with cosmological data if the standard model reheating temperature was 10^10 - 10^11 GeV. In two distinct scenarios, the mass of dark matter particles, i.e. the IR scale of the throat, is either around 10^5 GeV or around 10^10 GeV. The lifetime and the decay channels of our dark matter candidates depend crucially on the fact that the Klebanov-Strassler throat is supersymmetric. Furthermore, the details of supersymmetry breaking both in the throat and in the visible sector play an essential role. We identify a number of scenarios where this type of dark matter can be discovered via gamma-ray observations.

Energy Transfer between Throats from a 10d Perspective

Strongly warped regions, also known as throats, are a common feature of the type IIB string theory landscape. If one of the throats is heated during cosmological evolution, the energy is subsequently transferred to other throats or to massless fields in the unwarped bulk of the Calabi-Yau orientifold. This energy transfer proceeds either by Hawking radiation from the black hole horizon in the heated throat or, at later times, by the decay of throat-localized Kaluza-Klein states. In both cases, we calculate in a 10d setup the energy transfer rate (respectively decay rate) as a function of the AdS scales of the throats and of their relative distance. Compared to existing results based on 5d models, we find a significant suppression of the energy transfer rates if the size of the embedding Calabi-Yau orientifold is much larger than the AdS radii of the throats. This effect can be partially compensated by a small distance between the throats. These results are relevant, e.g., for the analysis of reheating after brane inflation. Our calculation employs the dual gauge theory picture in which each throat is described by a strongly coupled 4d gauge theory, the degrees of freedom of which are localized at a certain position in the compact space.

Moduli stabilization in (string) model building: gauge fluxes and loops

We discuss the moduli stabilization arising in the presence of gauge fluxes, R-symmetry twists and non-perturbative effects in the context of 6-dimensional supergravity models. We show how the presence of D-terms, due to the gauge fluxes, is compatible with gaugino condensation, and that the two effects, combined with the R-symmetry twist, do stabilize all the Kaehler moduli present in the model, in the spirit of KKLT. We also calculate the flux-induced one-loop correction to the scalar potential coming from charged hypermultiplets, and find that it does not destabilize the minimum.

Flux Stabilization in 6 Dimensions: D-terms and Loop Corrections

We analyse D-terms induced by gauge theory fluxes in the context of 6-dimensional supergravity models. On the one hand, this is arguably the simplest concrete setting in which the controversial idea of `D-term uplifts' can be investigated. On the other hand, it is a very plausible intermediate step on the way from a 10d string theory model to 4d phenomenology. Our specific results include the flux-induced one-loop correction to the scalar potential coming from charged hypermultiplets. Furthermore, we comment on the interplay of gauge theory fluxes and gaugino condensation in the present context, demonstrate explicitly how the D-term arises from the gauging of one of the compactification moduli, and briefly discuss further ingredients that may be required for the construction of a phenomenologically viable model. In particular, we show how the 6d dilaton and volume moduli can be simultaneously stabilized, in the spirit of KKLT, by the combination of an R symmetry twist, a gaugino condensate, and a flux-induced D-term.

SUSY breaking mediation by throat fields

We investigate, in the general framework of KKLT, the mediation of supersymmetry breaking by fields propagating in the strongly warped region of the compactification manifold ('throat fields'). Such fields can couple both to the supersymmetry breaking sector at the IR end of the throat and to the visible sector at the UV end. We model the supersymmetry breaking sector by a chiral superfield which develops an F-term vacuum expectation value. It turns out that the mediation effect of vector multiplets propagating in the throat can compete with modulus-anomaly mediation. Moreover, such vector fields are naturally present as the gauge fields arising from isometries of the throat (most notably the SO(4) isometry of the Klebanov-Strassler solution). Their mediation effect is important in spite of their large 4d mass. The latter is due to the breaking of the throat isometry by the compact manifold at the UV end of the throat. The contribution from heavy chiral superfields is found to be subdominant.

The Ubiquitous Throat

We attempt to quantify the widely-held belief that large hierarchies induced by strongly-warped geometries are common in the string theory landscape. To this end, we focus on the arguably best-understood subset of vacua -- type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifolds with non-perturbative Kaehler stabilization and a SUSY-breaking uplift (the KKLT setup). Within this framework, vacua with a realistically small cosmological constant are expected to come from Calabi-Yaus with a large number of 3-cycles. For appropriate choices of flux numbers, many of these 3-cycles can, in general, shrink to produce near-conifold geometries. Thus, a simple statistical analysis in the spirit of Denef and Douglas allows us to estimate the expected number and length of Klebanov-Strassler throats in the given set of vacua. We find that throats capable of explaining the electroweak hierarchy are expected to be present in a large fraction of the landscape vacua while shorter throats are essentially unavoidable in a statistical sense.

Gauge Unification in Highly Anisotropic String Compactifications

It is well-known that heterotic string compactifications have, in spite of their conceptual simplicity and aesthetic appeal, a serious problem with precision gauge coupling unification in the perturbative regime of string theory. Using both a duality-based and a field-theoretic definition of the boundary of the perturbative regime, we reevaluate the situation in a quantitative manner. We conclude that the simplest and most promising situations are those where some of the compactification radii are exceptionally large, corresponding to highly anisotropic orbifold models. Thus, one is led to consider constructions which are known to the effective field-theorist as higher-dimensional or orbifold grand unified theories (orbifold GUTs). In particular, if the discrete symmetry used to break the GUT group acts freely, a non-local breaking in the larger compact dimensions can be realized, leading to a precise gauge coupling unification as expected on the basis of the MSSM particle spectrum. Furthermore, a somewhat more model dependent but nevertheless very promising scenario arises if the GUT breaking is restricted to certain singular points within the manifold spanned by the larger compactification radii.

Gauge Unification in Extra Dimensions: Power Corrections vs. Higher-Dimension Operators

Power-like loop corrections to gauge couplings are a generic feature of higher-dimensional field theories. In supersymmetric grand unified theories in d=5 dimensions, such corrections arise only in the presence of a vacuum expectation value of the adjoint scalar of the gauge multiplet. We show that, using the analysis of the exact quantum effective action by Intriligator, Morrison and Seiberg, these power corrections can be understood as the effect of higher-dimension operators. Such operators, both classical and quantum, are highly constrained by gauge symmetry and supersymmetry. As a result, even non-perturbatively large contributions to gauge coupling unification can be unambiguously determined within 5d low-energy effective field theory. Since no massive hypermultiplet matter exists in 6 dimensions, the predictivity is further enhanced by embedding the 5d model in a 6d gauge theory relevant at smaller distances. Thus, large and quantitatively controlled power-law contributions to gauge couplings arise naturally and can, in the most extreme case, lead to calculable TeV-scale power law unification. We identify a simple 5d SU(5) model with one massless 10 in the bulk where the power-law effect is exactly MSSM-like.

A Comment on the Cosmological Constant Problem in Spontaneously Broken Supergravity

In spontaneously broken supergravity with non-flat potential the vanishing of the cosmological constant is usually associated with a non-trivial balancing of two opposite-sign contributions. We make the simple observation that, in an appropriately defined expansion of the superfield action in inverse powers of $M_P$, this tuning corresponds to the absence of two specific operators. It is then tempting to speculate what kind of non-standard symmetry or structural principle might underlie the observed extreme smallness of the corresponding coefficients in the real world. Independently of such speculations, the suggested expansion appears to be a particularly simple and convenient starting point for the effective field theory analysis of spontaneously broken supergravity models.

Grand Unification in the Projective Plane

A 6-dimensional grand unified theory with the compact space having the topology of a real projective plane, i.e., a 2-sphere with opposite points identified, is considered. The space is locally flat except for two conical singularities where the curvature is concentrated. One supersymmetry is preserved in the effective 4d theory. The unified gauge symmetry, for example SU(5), is broken only by the non-trivial global topology. In contrast to the Hosotani mechanism, no adjoint Wilson-line modulus associated with this breaking appears. Since, locally, SU(5) remains a good symmetry everywhere, no UV-sensitive threshold corrections arise and SU(5)-violating local operators are forbidden. Doublet-triplet splitting can be addressed in the context of a 6d N=2 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(6). If this symmetry is first broken to SU(5) at a fixed point and then further reduced to the standard model group in the above non-local way, the two light Higgs doublets of the MSSM are predicted by the group-theoretical and geometrical structure of the model.

Spinor Gravity

A unified description of all interactions could be based on a higher-dimensional theory involving only spinor fields. The metric arises as a composite object and the gravitational field equations contain torsion-corrections as compared to Einstein gravity. Lorentz symmetry in spinor space is only global, implying new goldstone-boson-like gravitational particles beyond the graviton. However, the Schwarzschild and Friedman solutions are unaffected at one loop order. Our generalized gravity seems compatible with all present observations.

Randall-Sundrum II Cosmology, AdS/CFT, and the Bulk Black Hole

We analyse the cosmology of a brane world model where a single brane carrying the standard model fields forms the boundary of a 5-dimensional AdS bulk (the Randall-Sundrum II scenario). We focus on the thermal radiation of bulk gravitons, the formation of the bulk black hole, and the holographic AdS/CFT definition of the RSII theory. Our detailed calculation of bulk radiation reduces previous estimates to a phenomenologically acceptable, although potentially visible level. In late cosmology, in which the Friedmann equation depends linearly on the energy density ρ, only about 0.5% of energy density is lost to the black hole or, equivalently, to the `dark radiation' (Ω_{d,N} \simeq 0.005 at nucleosynthesis). The preceding, unconventional ρ^2 period can produce up to 5% dark radiation (Ω_{d,N} <\sim 0.05). The AdS/CFT correspondence provides an equivalent description of late RSII cosmology. We show how the AdS/CFT formulation can reproduce the ρ^2 correction to the standard treatment at low matter density. However, the 4-dimensional effective theory of CFT + gravity breaks down due to higher curvature terms for energy densities where ρ^2 behaviour in the Friedmann equation is usually predicted. We emphasize that, in going beyond this energy density, the microscopic formulation of the theory becomes essential. For example, the pure AdS_5 and string-motivated AdS_5\timesS^5 definitions differ in their cosmological implications.

Power-Like Threshold Corrections to Gauge Unification in Extra Dimensions

One of the much-debated novel features of theories with extra dimensions is the presence of power-like loop corrections to gauge coupling unification, which have the potential of allowing a significant reduction of the unification scale. A recognized problem of such scenarios is the UV sensitivity of the above power corrections. We consider situations where the grand unified group is broken by the vacuum expectation value of a bulk field and find that, because of the softness of this extra-dimensional symmetry breaking mechanism, power-like threshold corrections are calculable and generic in many of the most relevant settings. While the precision is limited by the presence of higher-dimension bulk operators, the most dangerous of these operators are naturally forbidden by symmetries of the bulk theory. Particularly interesting and constrained scenarios arise in the context of higher-dimensional supersymmetry. Our phenomenological exploration of SU(5) models in 5d, linked in particular with more recently discussed orbifold GUT models, shows promising results.

Higher-Dimensional Origin of Heavy Sneutrino Domination and Low-Scale Leptogenesis

If the expectation value of the right-handed (rhd) sneutrino comes to dominate the universe, its decay naturally leads to successful leptogenesis, as well as significant dilution of dangerous inflationary relics, such as the gravitino. The resulting baryon asymmetry is independent of other cosmological initial conditions. This attractive variant of leptogenesis requires at least one of the rhd neutrinos to have small Yukawa coupling and to have mass ~ 10^6 GeV, much smaller than the grand unified (GUT) scale. We show that these features naturally arise in the context of independently motivated and successful 5d orbifold GUTs with inverse-GUT-scale-sized extra dimensions. Rhd neutrinos are realized as bulk fields N_i with 5d bulk masses, while Yukawa couplings and lepton-number-violating masses for the N_i are localized at the SM boundary. The exponential suppression of the would-be N_i zero-modes leads to the desired small 4d Yukawa couplings and small masses for the rhd neutrino states. The see-saw prediction for the lhd neutrino mass scale is automatically maintained. We show that this realization of rhd neutrinos is nicely accommodated within an attractive orbifold-GUT flavour model, where all flavour hierarchies have a geometrical origin.

5D Super Yang-Mills Theory in 4D Superspace, Superfield Brane Operators, and Applications to Orbifold GUTs

A manifestly gauge invariant formulation of 5-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in terms of 4d superfields is derived. It relies on a supersymmetry and gauge-covariant derivative operator in the $x^5$ direction. This formulation allows for a systematic study of higher-derivative operators by combining invariant 4d superfield expressions under the additional restriction of 5d Lorentz symmetry. In cases where the 5d theory is compactified on a gauge-symmetry-breaking orbifold, the formalism can be used for a simple discussion of possible brane operators invariant under the restricted symmetry of the fixed points. This is particularly relevant to recently constructed grand unified theories in higher dimensions (orbifold GUTs). Several applications, including proton decay operators and brane-localized mass terms, are discussed.

Non-Perturbative High-Energy QCD

It is the aim of this talk to review our understanding of the high-energy limit of QCD, focussing, in particular, on recent theoretical developments. After a brief introduction, I will recall why the true high-energy limit of QCD scattering processes is genuinly non-perturbative and why it has so far not been possible to apply lattice methods to this type of physics. Given the experimental fact of slowly rising hadronic cross sections, we are thus faced with a fundamental problem comparable to that of confinement but without the promise of the lattice. During the last years, the experimental side of this field has largely been driven by the HERA accelerator, which has, naturally, also influenced recent theoretical work in high-energy QCD. I will therefore devote the second part of the talk to small-x deep inelastic scattering, in particular the physics of diffraction, and attempt to describe its impact on the wider field of non-perturbative high-energy QCD.

A Minimal S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') Orbifold GUT

We investigate supersymmetric SU(5) grand-unified theories (GUTs) realized in 5 space-time dimensions and broken down to the MSSM by SU(5)-violating boundary conditions on a S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') orbifold with two 3-branes. The doublet-triplet splitting problem is entirely avoided by locating the MSSM Higgs doublets on the brane on which SU(5) is not a good symmetry. An extremely simple model is then described in which the MSSM matter is also located on this SU(5)-violating brane. Although this model does not unify the MSSM matter within SU(5) multiplets, it explains gauge coupling unification. A second model with MSSM matter in the SU(5)-symmetric bulk preserves both the SU(5) explanation of fermion quantum numbers as well as gauge-coupling unification. Both models naturally avoid problematic SU(5) predictions for the Yukawa couplings of the first two generations and are consistent with proton decay constraints. We analyse the running of gauge couplings above the compactification scale in terms of a 5d effective action and derive the implications for the values of compactification scale, unification scale and of the scale at which the bulk gauge theory becomes strongly coupled.
