Upgrade of IAEA recommended data of selected nuclear reactions for production of PET and SPECT isotopes

An IAEA research project was dedicated to the compilation, evaluation and recommendation of cross-section data for the accelerator production of $^{11}$C, $^{13}$N, $^{15}$O, $^{18}$F, $^{64}$Cu, and $^{124}$I positron-emitting radionuclides clinically used for PET imaging, and for the accelerator production of two gamma emitters, $^{81}$Rb and $^{123}$I, used in SPECT imaging. Cross sections for 19 charged-particle induced reactions that can be employed for radionuclide accelerator production were evaluated including uncertainties. The resulting reference cross-section data were obtained from Padé fits to selected and corrected experimental data, and integral thick target yields were subsequently deduced. Uncertainties in the fitted results were estimated via a Padé least-squares method with the addition of a 4\% assessed systematic uncertainty to the estimated experimental uncertainty. Experimental data were also compared with theoretical predictions available from the TENDL library. All of the numerical reference cross-section data with their corresponding uncertainties and deduced integral thick target yields are available on-line at the IAEA-NDS medical portal https://www-nds.iaea.org/medportal/ and also at the IAEA-NDS web page https://www-nds.iaea.org/medical/.

Activation cross-sections of proton induced reactions on $^{nat}$Hf in the 38 to 65 MeV energy range. Production of $^{172}$Lu and of $^{169}$Yb

In the frame of a systematical study of light ion induced nuclear reactions on hafnium, activation cross sections for proton induced reactions were investigated. Excitation functions were measured in the 38 to 65 MeV energy range for the $^{nat}$Hf(p,xn)$^{180g,177,176,175,173}$Ta, $^{nat}$Hf(p,x)$^{180m,179m,175,173,172,171}$Hf, $^{177g,173,172,171,170,169}$Lu and $^{nat}$Hf(p,x)$^{169}$Yb reactions by using the activation method, combining stacked foil irradiation and off line gamma ray spectroscopy. The experimental results are compared with earlier results in the overlapping energy range, and with the theoretical predictions of the ALICE IPPE and EMPIRE theoretical codes and of the TALYS code reported in the TENDL2015 and TENDL2017 libraries. The production routes of $^{172}$Lu (and its parent $^{172}$Hf) and of $^{169Y}$b are reviewed.

Activation cross sections of Proton Induced Nuclear Reactions on neodymium up to 65 MeV

In the frame of a systematic study of the activation cross sections of charged particle induced nuclear reactions on rare earths for production of therapeutic radionuclides, proton induced reactions on neodymium were measured up to 65 MeV energy, above 45 MeV for the first time. The excitation functions of the natNd(p,x)150,149,148m,148g,146,144,143,141Pm, 149,147,141,140,139m,138Nd, 142,138mPr and 139gCe nuclear reactions were assessed by using stacked foil activation technique and high resolution gamma-spectrometry. The excitation functions were compared to the theoretical predictions, available in the TENDL-2015 library based on latest version of the TALYS code. The application of the data for medical isotope production is shortly discussed.

Study of activation cross sections of deuteron induced reactions on erbium in the 32-50 MeV energy range

Activation cross sections of the natEr(d,x)163,165,166,167,168,170Tm and natEr(d,x)171,161Er nuclear reactions have been measured in the 32-50 MeV energy range, above 40 MeV for the first time. The activation method with stacked foil irradiation technique and gamma-ray spectroscopy were used. The experimental cross sections were compared with the theoretical predictions in the TENDL-2015 library.

Activation cross-section measurement of proton induced reactions on cerium

In the framework of a systematic study of proton induced nuclear reactions on lanthanides we have measured the excitation functions on natural cerium for the production of 142,139,138m,137Pr, 141,139,137m,137g,135Ce and 133La up to 65 MeV proton energy using the activation method with stacked-foil irradiation technique and high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The cross-sections of the investigated reactions were compared with the data retrieved from the TENDL-2014 and TENDL-2015 libraries, based on the latest version of the TALYS code system. No earlier experimental data were found in the literature. The measured cross-section data are important for further improvement of nuclear reaction models and for practical applications in nuclear medicine, other labeling and activation studies.

Activation cross-section data for alpha-particle induced nuclear reactions on natural ytterbium for some longer lived radioisotopes

Additional experimental cross sections were deduced for the long half-life activation products (172Hf and 173Lu) from the alpha particle induced reactions on ytterbium up to 38 MeV from late, long measurements and for 175Yb, 167Tm from a re-evaluation of earlier measured spectra. The cross-sections are compared with the earlier experimental datasets and with the data based on the TALYS theoretical nuclear reaction model (available in the TENDL-2014 and 2015 libraries) and the ALICE-IPPE code.

Activation cross section data of proton induced nuclear reactions on lanthanum in the 34-65 MeV energy range and application for production of medical radionuclides

Activation cross sections of the natLa(p,x)139,137m,137g,135,134,133mCe, natLa(p,x)135,134,133La and 133m,133g,131Ba nuclear reactions have been measured experimentally, for the first time (except 139Ce). Cross-sections in the 34-64 MeV energy range were obtained through an activation method combining the stacked foil irradiation technique and gamma-ray spectrometry. The experimental cross sections were compared with the theoretical prediction in the TENDL-2014 and TENDL-2015, TALYS based libraries. Applications in the field of medical radionuclides production is discussed.

Activation cross sections of deuteron induced reactions on silver in the 33-50 MeV energy range

Excitation functions were measured for the $^{nat}$Ag(d,x)$^{105,104}$Cd, $^{110m,108m,106m,105g,104g}$Ag and $^{101}$Pd, $^{105,101m}$Rh reactions over the energy range 33 50 MeV by using the stacked foil activation technique and subsequent high-resolution gamma spectrometry. We present the first experimental cross section data above 40 MeV for all of these reactions and the first experimental cross section data for $^{nat}$Ag(d,x)$^{108m,104g}$Ag and $^{105,103}$Rh. The experimental data are compared with results of the model calculations performed with the ALICE D, EMPIRE D theoretical nuclear reaction model codes and with the TALYS code results as available in the TENDL2014 and 2015 on-line libraries.

Activation cross-sections of longer lived radioisotopes of proton induced nuclear reactions on terbium up to 65 MeV

Experimental cross sections are presented for the 159Tb(p,xn)153,155,157,159Dy, 152,153,155,156m2,m1,g,158Tb and 153,151Gd nuclear reactions up to 65 MeV. The experimental results are compared with the recently reported experimental data and with the results of the nuclear reaction codes ALICE-IPPE, EMPIRE and TALYS as reported in the TENDL-2015 on-line library. Integral thick-target yields are also derived for the reaction products used in practical applications and production routes are discussed.

Investigation of activation cross sections for deuteron induced reactions on strontium up to 50 MeV

Excitation functions were measured for the natSr(d,x)88,87m,87g,86g,85gY, 87m,85g,83g,82Sr, 86g,84g,83,82m, 81gRb reactions by the stacked foil activation technique and high-resolution gamma-spectrometry up to 50 MeV. We present the first experimental activation cross section data for all investigated reactions. Our experimental data are compared with the TALYS code results as available in the TENDL-2015 on-line library. Use of deuteron induced reactions on Sr for production of medical isotopes is discussed.

Measurement of activation cross-section of long-lived products in deuteron induced nuclear reactions on palladium in the 30-50 MeV energy range

Excitation functions were measured in the 31 - 49.2 MeV energy range for the natPd(d,xn)111,110m,106m,105,104g,103Ag, natPd(d,x) 111m,109,101,100Pd, natPd(d,x), 105,102m,102g,101m,101g,100,99m,99gRh and natPd(d,x)103,97Ru nuclear reactions by using the stacked foil irradiation technique. The experimental results are compared with our previous results and with the theoretical predictions calculated with the ALICE-D, EMPIRE-D and TALYS (TENDL libraries) codes.

New measurements of excitation functions of 186W(p,x) nuclear reactions up to 65 MeV. Production of 178W/178mTa generator

New experimental excitation functions for proton induced reactions on natW are presented in the 32- 65 MeV energy range. The cross sections for natW(p,xn)186,184,183,182m,182g,181Re, naW(p,x)178W, natW(p,x)183,182,180m,177,176,175Ta, 175Hf, 177Lu were measured via an activation method by using a stacked-foil irradiation technique and high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The results were compared with predicted values obtained with the nuclear reaction model code TALYS (results taken from TENDL-2014 and TENDL-2015 on-line library). Production routes of the medically relevant radionuclides 186Re, 178W 178Ta and 181W are discussed.

Extension of activation cross section data of long lived products in deuteron induced nuclear reactions on platinum up to 50 MeV

In the frame of a systematical study of light ion induced nuclear reactions on platinum, activation cross sections for deuteron induced reactions were investigated. Excitation functions were measured in the 20.8 - 49.2 MeV energy range for the natPt(d,xn)191,192,193,194,195,196m2,196g,198g,199Au, natPt(d,x)188,189,191,195m,197m,197gPt and natPt(d,x)189,190,192,194m2Ir reactions by using the stacked foil irradiation technique. The experimental results are compared with previous results from the literature and with the theoretical predictions in the TENDL-2014 and TENDL-2015 libraries. The applicability of the produced radio-tracers for wear measurements has been presented.

Activation cross sections of proton and deuteron induced nuclear reactions on holmium and erbium, related to the production of $^{161}$Er and $^{160}$Er medical isotopes

Experimental excitation functions for long-lived products in proton induced reactions were measured with the activation method in the 37-65 MeV energy range on natural holmium. Stacked foil irradiation technique and high resolution gamma spectrometry were used in order to measure cross-section data for the production of $^{161}$Er, $^{160}$Er and $^{159,157}$Dy. For comparison of the production routes of medically related $^{161}$Er and $^{160}$Er radioisotopes new experimental cross section data were deduced for the $^{162}$Er(p,x)$^{161,160}$Er and $^{162}$Er(d,x)$^{161,160}$Er reactions by re-evaluating gamma-ray spectra from earlier measurements. No earlier data were found in the literature for these reactions. The experimental data are compared with results of TALYS theoretical code reported in TENDL-2015.

Activation cross sections of proton induced nuclear reactions on gold up to 65 MeV

Activation cross sections of proton induced reactions on gold for production of $^{197m,197g,195m,195g, 193m,193g,192}$Hg, $^{196m,196g(cum),195g(cum),194,191(cum)}$Au, $^{191(cum)}$Pt and $^{192}$Ir were measured up to 65 MeV proton energy, some of them for the first time. The new data are in acceptably good agreement with the recently published earlier experimental data in the overlapping energy region. The experimental data are compared with the predictions of the TALYS 1.6 (results in TENDL-2015 on-line library) and EMPIRE 3.2 code.

Activation cross-sections of proton induced reactions on vanadium in the 37-65 MeV energy range

Experimental excitation functions for proton induced reactions on natural vanadium in the 37-65 MeV energy range were measured with the activation method using a stacked foil irradiation technique. By using high resolution gamma spectrometry cross-section data for the production of $^{51,48}$Cr, $^{48}$V, $^{48,47,46,44m,44g,43}$Sc and $^{43,42}$K were determined. Comparisons with the earlier published data are presented and results predicted by different theoretical codes (EMPIRE and TALYS) are included. Thick target yields were calculated from a fit to our experimental excitation curves and compared with the earlier experimental yield data. Depth distribution curves to be used for thin layer activation (TLA) are also presented.

Activation cross sections of proton induced nuclear reactions on palladium up to 80 MeV

Activation cross sections of proton induced nuclear reactions on palladium were measured up to 80 MeV by using the stacked foil irradiation technique and gamma ray spectrometry. The beam intensity, the incident energy and the energy degradation were controlled by a method based on flux constancy via normalization to the excitation functions of monitor reactions measured in parallel. Excitation functions for direct and cumulative cross-sections were measured for the production of ${}^{104m,104g,105}$${}^{g,106m,110m}$Ag, ${}^{100,101}$Pd, ${}^{99m,99g,100,}$${}^{101m}$${}^{,101g,102m,102g,105}$Rh and ${}^{103,}$${}^{97}$Ru radioisotopes. The cross section data were compared with the theoretical predictions of TENDL-2014 and -2015 libraries. For practical applications thick target yields were derived from the measured excitation functions. Application in the field of medical radionuclide production is shortly discussed.
