Magnetisation dynamics in the normal and condensate phases of UPd2Al3 I: Surveys in reciprocal space using neutron inelastic scattering

This paper, I, presents new results from neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystals of UPd2Al3. The focus is on the experimental position whilst the sequel, II, advances theoretical perspectives. We present a detailed and complete characterisation of the wavevector- and energy-dependent magnetisation dynamics in UPd2Al3 as measured by neutron inelastic scattering primarily in the form of extensive surveys in energy-momentum space under a wide range of experimental conditions, and put our observations in context with data that has been previously published by two independent groups. In this way we emphasize the commonality and robust nature of the data which indicate the intricate nature of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of this material. Our results yield unique insight into the low temperature ground state which exhibits a microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity making UPd2Al3 one of the most accessible heavy-fermion superconductors that can be fully characterised by neutron spectroscopy.

Magnetisation dynamics in the normal and condensate phases of UPd2Al3 II: Inferences on the nodal gap symmetry

This paper provides an analysis of neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystals of UPd2Al3. The emphasis is on establishing robust, general, inferences on the joint antiferromagnetic-superconducting state which characterises UPd2Al3 at low temperatures. A distinction is drawn between these conclusions and various theoretical perspectives of a more model sensitive nature that have been raised in the literature.

Spin Dynamics of Half-Doped La3/2Sr1/2NiO4

We report polarized- and unpolarized- neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the magnetic excitation spectrum in the spin-charge ordered phase of La3/2Sr1/2NiO4. Up to energies of ~30 meV we observe broad magnetic modes characteristic of a near checkerboard ordering. A linear spin-wave model for an ideal checkerboard ordering with a single antiferromagnetic exchange interaction J' = 5.8 +/- 0.5 meV between next-nearest-neighbour spins on Ni2+ sites, together with a small XY-like single-ion anisotropy, provides a reasonable description of the measured dispersion. Above 30 meV the excitations are not fully consistent with the linear spin-wave model, with modes near the two-dimensional reciprocal space wavevector (0.5,0.5) having an anomalously large intensity. Furthermore, two additional dispersive modes not predicted by spin wave theory were observed, both of which are probably magnetic. One disperses away from (0.5,0.5) in the energy range between 50-56 meV, and the other appears around (h,k) type positions (h,k = integer) in the energy range 31-39 meV. We propose a model in which these anomalous features are explained by the existence of discommensurations in the checkerboard ordering. At low energies there is additional diffuse scattering centred on the magnetic ordering wavevector. We associate this diffuse scattering with dynamic antiferromagnetic correlations between spins attached to the doped holes.

Three-Dimensional Spin Fluctuations in Na0.75CoO2

We report polarized- and unpolarized-neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in single-crystal Na0.75CoO2. The data confirm ferromagnetic correlations within the cobalt-layers and reveal antiferromagnetic correlations perpendicular to the layers, consistent with an A-type antiferromagnetic ordering. The magnetic modes propagating perpendicular to the layers are sharp, and reach a maximum energy of ~12 meV. From a minimal spin wave model, containing only nearest-neighbour Heisenberg exchange interactions, we estimate the inter- and intra-layer exchange constants to be 12.2 +/- 0.5 meV and -6 +/- 2 meV, respectively. We conclude that the magnetic fluctuations in Na0.75CoO2 are highly three-dimensional.

Polarized Neutron Measurement of Magnetic Order in YBa2Cu3O6.45

Orbital current order of the d-density-wave type (DDW) has been postulated to explain the pseudogap in the high temperature superconductors. We have performed neutron scattering experiments to search for this order and show here the results obtained on an YBa2Cu3O6.45 sample using the best neutron spectrometers available. We argue that the data are consistent with a small, largely c-axis-directed moment, found below about 200K.

Spin correlations among the charge carriers in an ordered stripe phase

We have observed a diffuse component to the low-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of stripe-ordered La5/3Sr1/3NiO4 probed by neutron inelastic scattering. The diffuse scattering forms a square pattern with sides parallel and perpendicular to the stripe directions. The signal is dispersive, with a maximum energy of ~10 meV. Probed at 2 meV the scattering decreases in strength with increasing temperature, and is barely visible at 100 K. We argue that the signal originates from dynamic, quasi- one-dimensional, antiferromagnetic correlations among the stripe electrons.

Unusual interplay between copper-spin and vortex dynamics in slightly overdoped La{1.83}Sr{0.17}CuO{4}

Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments of the spin excitations in the slightly overdoped La{1.83}Sr{0.17}CuO{4} compound show that, under the application of a magnetic field of 5 Tesla, the low-temperature susceptibility undergoes a weight redistribution centered at the spin-gap energy. Furthermore, by comparing the temperature dependence of the neutron data with ac-susceptibility and magnetization measurements, we conclude that the filling in of the spin gap tracks the irreversibility/melting temperature rather than Tc2, which indicates an unusual interplay between the magnetic vortices and the spin excitations even in the slightly overdoped regime of high-temperature superconductors.

Spin dynamics in stripe-ordered La5/3Sr1/3NiO4

Polarized and unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering has been used to measure the spin excitations in the spin-charge-ordered stripe phase of La5/3Sr1/3NiO4. At high energies, sharp magnetic modes are observed characteristic of a static stripe lattice. The energy spectrum is described well by a linear spin wave model with intra- and inter-stripe exchange interactions between neighbouring Ni spins given by J = 15 +/- 1.5 meV and J' = 7.5 +/- 1.5 meV respectively. A pronounced broadening of the magnetic fluctuations in a band between 10 meV and 25 meV is suggestive of coupling to collective motions of the stripe domain walls.

Magnetic Order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ Superconductors

Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction has been used to search for magnetic order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ superconductors. Most of the measurements were made on a high quality crystal of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$. It is shown that this crystal has highly ordered ortho-II chain order, and a sharp superconducting transition. Inelastic scattering measurements display a very clean spin-gap and pseudogap with any intensity at 10 meV being 50 times smaller than the resonance intensity. The crystal shows a complicated magnetic order that appears to have three components. A magnetic phase is found at high temperatures that seems to stem from an impurity with a moment that is in the $a$-$b$ plane, but disordered on the crystal lattice. A second ordering occurs near the pseudogap temperature that has a shorter correlation length than the high temperature phase and a moment direction that is at least partly along the c-axis of the crystal. Its moment direction, temperature dependence, and Bragg intensities suggest that it may stem from orbital ordering of the $d$-density wave (DDW) type. An additional intensity increase occurs below the superconducting transition. The magnetic intensity in these phases does not change noticeably in a 7 Tesla magnetic field aligned approximately along the c-axis. Searches for magnetic order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ show no signal while a small magnetic intensity is found in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.45}$ that is consistent with c-axis directed magnetic order. The results are contrasted with other recent neutron measurements.

Charge Ordering and Spin Dynamics in NaV2O5

We report high-resolution neutron inelastic scattering experiments on the spin excitations of NaV2O5. Below Tc, two branches associated with distinct energy gaps are identified. From the dispersion and intensity of the spin excitation modes, we deduce the precise zig-zag charge distribution on the ladder rungs and the corresponding charge order (about 0.6). We argue that the spin gaps observed in the low-T phase of this compound are primarily due to the charge transfer.

Magnetic Resonance, Electronic spectra and Bilayer Splitting in Underdoped Bi2212

We report the first inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments of the resonance in the underdoped regime of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The energy of the resonance is found to be 34 meV and the temperature dependence shows a smooth evolution through Tc with a remnant persisting in the pseudogap state. Besides the INS data, we present also angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra taken on the same crystals. As a function of temperature, the neutron intensity scales with the square of the ARPES gap estimated by the leading-edge midpoint at (pi,0). We also show that the energy of the collective mode inferred from the peak-dip-hump structure compares well with the energy of the resonance. Based on kinematics, we argue that the correlation of these two energies is consistent with the absence of bilayer splitting in the electronic dispersion.

Spin Dynamics in the Magnetic Chains Arrays of Sr14Cu24O41: a Neutron Inelastic scattering Investigation

Below about 150 K, the spin arrangement in the chain arrays of Sr14Cu24O41 is shown to develop in two dimensions (2D). Both the correlations and the dispersion of the observed elementary excitations agree well with a model of interacting dimers. Along the chains, the intra- and inter-dimer distances are equal to 2 and about 3 times the distance (c) between neighboring Cu ions. While the intra-dimer coupling is J about 10 meV, the inter-dimer couplings along and between the chains are of comparable strenght, J// about -1.1 meV and Jperp about 1.7 meV, respectively. This remarkable 2D arrangement satisfies the formal Cu valence of the undoped compound. Our data suggest also that it is associated with a relative sliding of one chain with respect to the next one, which, as T decreases, develops in the chain direction. A qualitative analysis shows that nearest inter-dimer spin correlations are ferromagnetic, which, in such a 2D structure, could well result from frustration effects.
