Surface plasmon propagation in an elliptical corral

We report the experimental realization of an elliptical Bragg reflector acting as an interferometer for propagating surface plasmon sSPd waves. We investigate SP interferometry in this device using a leakage radiation microscope and we compare our observations with a theoretical model for SP propagation. Strong SP focalization as a function of laser polarization orientation is observed and justified.

Leakage radiation microscopy of surface plasmon polaritons

We review the principle and methodology of leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) applied to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Therefore we first analyse in detail the electromagnetic theory of leaky SPP waves. We show that LRM is a versatile optical far-field method allowing direct quantitative imaging and analysis of SPP propagation on thin metal films. We illustrate the LRM potentiality by analyzing the propagation of SPP waves interacting with several two dimensional plasmonic devices realized and studied in the recent years.

Surface Plasmon Polariton Mach-Zehnder Interferometer and Oscillation Fringes

We present a quantitative experimental analysis of a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) interferometer relying on elliptical Bragg mirrors. By using a leakage radiation microscope we observe oscillation fringes with unit visibility at the two interferometer exits. We study the properties of the SPP beam splitter and determine experimentally both the norm and phase of the SPP reflection and transmission coefficients.

Surface Plasmon Interference Fringes in Back-Reflection

We report the experimental observation of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) interference fringes with near-unity visibility and half-wavelength periodicity obtained in back reflection on a Bragg mirror. The presented method based on leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) represents an alternative solution to optical near-field analysis and opens new ways for the quantitative analysis of SPP fringes. With LRM we investigate various SPP interference patterns and analyze the high reflectivity of Bragg mirror in comparison with theoretical models.

Surface Plasmon mediated near-field imaging and optical addressing in nanoscience

We present an overview of recent progress in plasmonics. We focus our study on the observation and excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with optical near-field microscopy. We discuss in particular recent applications of photon scanning tunnelling microscope (PSTM) for imaging of SPP propagating in metal and dielectric wave guides. We show how near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) can be used to optically and actively address remotely nano-objects such as quantum dots. Additionally we compare results obtained with near-field microscopy to those obtained with other optical far-field methods of analysis such as leakage radiation microscopy (LRM).
