Bursting bubbles in Herschel-Bulkley fluids: dynamics and jetting transitions

When a bubble rises to a free surface, its bursting dynamics in Newtonian fluids are governed by the interplay between viscous, capillary, and gravitational forces. In this work, we extend this classical problem to Herschel-Bulkley fluids, elucidating the role of viscoplasticity and non-Newtonian rheology in bubble bursting. Using direct numerical simulations validated against experiments, we systematically explore the influence of the key governing dimensionless parameters, such as the Bond number, the Ohnesorge number, the shear-dependent behavior and the plastocapillary number, each varied over several orders of magnitude. Our results reveal that viscoplasticity strongly controls the evolution and interaction of capillary waves within the cavity formed upon bubble rupture. Shear-thinning and shear-thickening effects are significant only for moderate Ohnesorge numbers, while at large Ohnesorge values the free surface dynamics converge to a non-flat equilibrium shape once the internal stresses fall below the yield stress. These findings provide new insights into the coupled effects of viscosity, gravity, yield stress, and shear-dependent rheology in multiphase flows, with broad implications for natural and industrial processes involving gas-liquid interfaces.

Electronic structure of a 3x3-ordered silicon layer on Al(111)

Electronic structure of the 3x3 ordered-phase of a silicon (Si) layer on Al(111) has been studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique using synchrotron radiation and modeled by a trial atomic model. A closed Fermi surface originating from linearly dispersing band is identified. A band structure calculation of a trial atomic model of the honeycomb silicene on Al(111) implies that the metallic band originates from the Al-Si hybrid state that has the Dirac cone-like dispersion curves. The Si layer on Al(111) can be a model system of Xene to realize the massless electronic system through the overlayer-substrate interaction.

Rare-event Probability Estimation via Empirical Likelihood Maximization

We explore past and recent developments in rare-event probability estimation with a particular focus on a novel Monte Carlo technique Empirical Likelihood Maximization (ELM). This is a versatile method that involves sampling from a sequence of densities using MCMC and maximizing an empirical likelihood. The quantity of interest, the probability of a given rare-event, is estimated by solving a convex optimization program related to likelihood maximization. Numerical experiments are performed using this new technique and benchmarks are given against existing robust algorithms and estimators.

Measurement of the Cosmic Ray Energy Spectrum and Composition from 10^{17} to 10^{18.3} eV Using a Hybrid Fluorescence Technique

We study the spectrum and average mass composition of cosmic rays with primary energies between 10^{17} eV and 10^{18} eV using a hybrid detector consisting of the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) prototype and the MIA muon array. Measurements have been made of the change in the depth of shower maximum as a function of energy. A complete Monte Carlo simulation of the detector response and comparisons with shower simulations leads to the conclusion that the cosmic ray intensity is changing f rom a heavier to a lighter composition in this energy range. The spectrum is consistent with earlier Fly's Eye measurements and supports the previously found steepening near 4 \times 10^{17} eV .

A Multi-Component Measurement of the Cosmic Ray Composition Between 10^{17} eV and 10^{18} eV

The average mass composition of cosmic rays with primary energies between $10^{17}$eV and $10^{18}$eV has been studied using a hybrid detector consisting of the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) prototype and the MIA muon array. Measurements have been made of the change in the depth of shower maximum, $X_{max}$, and in the change in the muon density at a fixed core location, $ρ_μ(600m)$, as a function of energy. The composition has also been evaluated in terms of the combination of $X_{max}$ and $ρ_μ(600m)$. The results show that the composition is changing from a heavy to lighter mix as the energy increases.
