Spinodal decomposition in filled polymer blends exhibiting upper critical solution temperature behavior

By extending the Sanchez-Lacombe lattice-fluid model for mixtures to the case of polymer blends containing solid fillers, we calculate the excess thermodynamic quantities arising from the presence of fillers. These results are then used to derive the spinodal stability condition of a filled polymer blend. In the low-compressibility limit, this condition reduces to a remarkably simple analytical expression that is derived self-consistently within the present framework. Comparison between the exact and approximate spinodal curves shows excellent agreement, with deviations in the spinodal temperature of less than 4 K, thereby validating the proposed approximation. The obtained analytical approximation enables a straightforward evaluation of the spinodal temperature without the extensive numerical calculations required to determine the exact spinodal condition. Both the exact and approximate spinodal conditions yield good quantitative agreement with experimental data for filled and unfilled blends.

Effect of the orientational relaxation on the collective motion of patterns formed by self-propelled particles

We investigate the collective behavior of self-propelled particles (SPPs) undergoing competitive processes of pattern formation and rotational relaxation of their self-propulsion velocities. In full accordance with previous work, we observe transitions between different steady states of the SPPs caused by the intricate interplay among the involved effects of pattern formation, orientational order, and coupling between the SPP density and orientation fields. Based on rigorous analytical and numerical calculations, we prove that the rate of the orientational relaxation of the SPP velocity field is the main factor determining the steady states of the SPP system. Further, we determine the boundaries between domains in the parameter plane that delineate qualitatively different resting and moving states. In addition, we analytically calculate the collective velocity $\vec{v}$ of the SPPs and show that it perfectly agrees with our numerical results. We quantitatively demonstrate that $\vec{v}$ does not vanish upon approaching the transition boundary between the moving pattern and homogeneous steady states.

Theoretical estimation of density profile of semiflexible polymers adsorbed on a surface and thermodynamic glass transition scenario by means of the Bethe-Peierls approximation

We develop a theory describing density profile of the semi-flexible polymers absorbed onto a planar surface. The theoretical analysis consists of two parts. As a first part, we calculate a density profile of the adsorbed polymers by developing an extension of the Bethe-Peierls approximation to the case of nonhomogeneous systems. This approach relies on the combination of the single chain adsorption theory and the lattice version of the self-consistent field theory. Semi-flexibility of a chain is described by incorporating a finite coordination number of the lattice into the consideration, in the spirit of the previous Silberberg approach. The developed lattice theory incorporates the interaction between nearest-neighbor pairs of segments and finite chain length. The theory is completely mapped into the Scheutjens-Fleer theory in the limit of infinite coordination number. As a second part of the developed approach, we calculate the configurational entropy to investigate how the density structure of the semi-flexible polymers near the surface relates to possible reduction of glass transition temperature near nonabsorbing surface and enhancement near the strongly attractive surface.

Non-equilibrium steady state of the superfluid mixtures of helium isotopes at classical temperatures

The size effect in the gas of impuritons of the superfluid mixtures of helium isotopes is investigated by taking into consideration the contribution of thermal excitations. The solution is obtained for the set of kinetic equations describing a non-equilibrium state of the phonon-impuriton system of a superfluid mixture situated in the volume filled with the macroparticles. It allows to find the condition describing a steady, thermodynamically non-equilibrium state of $^3{He}-^4{He}$ mixture in confined geometry. The Knudsen effect in the gas of impuritons of a superfluid mixture is investigated by taking into account the contribution of phonons. A model for the collision operator has been proposed to analyze the exact results in the context of the concrete physical situations. An experiment for the investigation of the Knudsen effect in a superfluid mixture of helium isotopes is proposed.
