Extension of worldline computational algorithms for QCD to open fermionic contours

The worldline casting of a gauge field system with spin-1/2 matter fields has provided a, particle-based, first quantization formalism in the framework of which the Bern-Kosower algorithms for efficient computations in QCD acquire a simple interpretation. This paper extends the scope of applicability of the worldline scheme so as to include open fermionic paths. Specific algorithms are established which address themselves to the fermionic propagator and which are directly applicable to any other process involving external fermionic states. It is also demonstrated that in this framework the sole agent of dynamics operating in the system is the Wilson line (loop) operator, which makes a natural entrance in the worldline action; everything else is associated with geometrical properties of particle propagation, of which the most important component is Polyakov's spin factor.

Worldline Approach to Forward and Fixed Angle fermion-fermion Scattering in Yang-Mills Theories at High Energies

Worldline techniques are employed to study the general behaviour of the fermion-fermion collision amplitude at very high energies in a non-abelian gauge field theory for the forward and fixed angle scattering cases. A central objective of this work is to demonstrate the simplicity by which the worldline methodology isolates that sector of the full theory which carries the soft physics, relevant to each process. Anomalous dimensions pertaining to a given soft sector are identified and subseuently used to facilitate the renormalization group running of the respective four point functions. Gluon reggeization is achieved for forward, while Sudakov suppression is established for fixed angle scattering.

Worldline approach to Sudakov-type form factors in non-Abelian gauge theories

We calculate Sudakov-type form factors for isolated spin-1/2 particles (fermions) entering non-Abelian gauge-field systems. We consider both the on- and the off-mass-shell case using a methodology which rests on a worldline casting of field theories. The simplicity and utility of our approach derives from the fact that we are in a position to make, a priori, a more transparent separation (factorization), with respect to a given scale, between short- and long-distance physics than diagramatic methods.

Worldline description of the Isgur-Wise function

An effective field theoretic description of the Isgur-Wise function in heavy-meson transitions is presented which emulates soft interactions by a fermion worldline with an infinitesimal self-intersecting loop. A point-splitting regularization technique is used, which replaces pointlike worldlines by ``ribbons'' in the sense of Witten. The calculated vertex function is correctly normalized, does not depend on the heavy-quark mass, and complies with different sets of recent experimental data of the ARGUS and CLEO collaborations.
