Superconductive proximity effect in interacting disordered conductors

We present a general theory of the superconductive proximity effect in disordered normal--superconducting (N-S) structures, based on the recently developed Keldysh action approach. In the case of the absence of interaction in the normal conductor we reproduce known results for the Andreev conductance G_A at arbitrary relation between the interface resistance R_T and the diffusive resistance R_D. In two-dimensional N-S systems, electron-electron interaction in the Cooper channel of normal conductor is shown to strongly affect the value of G_A as well as its dependence on temperature, voltage and magnetic field. In particular, an unusual maximum of G_A as a function of temperature and/or magnetic field is predicted for some range of parameters R_D and R_T. The Keldysh action approach makes it possible to calculate the full statistics of charge transfer in such structures. As an application of this method, we calculate the noise power of an N-S contact as a function of voltage, temperature, magnetic field and frequency for arbitrary Cooper repulsion in the normal metal and arbitrary values of the ratio R_D/R_T.

Quantum superconductor-metal transition in a proximity array

A theory of the zero-temperature superconductor-metal transition is developed for an array of superconductive islands (of size d) coupled via a disordered two-dimensional conductor with the dimensionless conductance g>>1. At T=0 macroscopically superconductive state of the array with the lattice spacing b>>d is destroyed at g < g_c \approx 0.1 ln^2(b/d). At high temperatures the normal-state resistance between neighboring islands at b=b_c is much smaller than h/4e^2.

Nonlinear fluctuation phenomena in the transport properties of superconductors

There exists a wide temperature region $({\rm Gi}T<T-T_c<T\sqrt{\rm Gi})$, where the influence of fluctuations on the thermodynamic properties of superconductors can be taken into account in the linear (Gaussian) approximation, while their influence on the kinetic properties is strongly nonlinear. Maki-Thompson contribution to conductivity saturates in this region. However, Aslamazov-Larkin contribution becomes even more singular. Such an enhancement is connected with the fact that nonlinear effects yield an increase in the lifetime of fluctuating pairs. Pairbreaking and energy relaxation processes can diminish the nonlinear effects.

Magnetic fluctuations in 2D metals close to the Stoner instability

We consider the effect of potential disorder on magnetic properties of a two-dimensional metallic system (with conductance $g\gg 1$) when interaction in the triplet channel is so strong that the system is close to the threshold of the Stoner instability. We show, that under these conditions there is an exponentially small probability for the system to form local spin droplets which are local regions with non zero spin density. Using a non-local version of the optimal fluctuation method we find analytically the probability distribution and the typical spin of a local spin droplet (LSD). In particular, we show that both the probability to form a LSD and its typical spin are independent of the size of the droplet (within the exponential accuracy). The LSDs manifest themselves in temperature dependence of observable quantities. We show, that below certain cross-over temperature the paramagnetic susceptibility acquires the Curie-like temperature dependence, while the dephasing time (extracted from magneto-resistance measurements) saturates.

Cryptoferromagnetic state in superconductor-ferromagnet multilayers

We study a possibility of a non-homogeneous magnetic order (cryptoferromagnetic state) in heterostructures consisting of a bulk superconductor and a ferromagnetic thin layer that can be due to the influence of the superconductor. The exchange field in the ferromagnet may be strong and exceed the inverse mean free time. A new approach based on solving the Eilenberger equations in the ferromagnet and the Usadel equations in the superconductor is developed. We derive a phase diagram between the cryptoferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states and discuss the possibility of an experimental observation of the CF state in different materials.

The g-factors of discrete levels in nanoparticles

Spin-orbit scattering suppresses Zeeman splitting of individual energy levels in small metal particles. This suppression becomes significant when the spin-orbit scattering rate τ_{so}^{-1} is comparable with the quantum level spacing δ. The g-factor exhibits mesoscopic fluctuations; at small δτ_{so} it is distributed according to the Maxwell distribution. At δτ_{so}\to 0 the average g-factor levels off at a small value g\sim(l/L)^{1/2} given by the ratio of the electron mean free path l to the particle size L. On the contrary, in 2D quantum dots the g-factor is strongly enhanced by spin-orbit coupling.

Magnetoresistance of Granular Superconducting Metals in a Strong Magnetic Field

The magnetoresistance of a granular superconductor in a strong magnetic field is considered. It is assumed that this field destroys the superconducting gap in each grain, such that all interesting effects considered in the paper are due to superconducting fluctuations. The conductance of the system is assumed to be large, which allows us to neglect all localization effects as well as the Coulomb interaction. It is shown that at low temperatures the superconducting fluctuations reduce the one-particle density of states but do not contribute to transport. As a result, the resistivity of the normal state exceeds the classical resistivity approaching the latter only in the limit of extremely strong magnetic fields, and this leads to a negative magnetoresistance. We present detailed calculations of physical quatities relevant for describing the effect and make a comparison with existing experiments.

Proximity Effect in Presence of Quantum Fluctuations

The effect of Coulomb interaction upon superconductive proximity effect in disordered metals is studied, employing newly developed Keldysh functional approach (cond-mat/9907358). We have calculated subgap Andreev conductance between superconductor and 2D dirty film, as well as Josephson coupling via such a film. Both two qualitatively different Coulomb effects - suppression of the tunneling density of states and disorder-enchanced repulsion in the Cooper channel - are shown to be important at sufficiently low temperatures.

Keldysh action for disordered superconductors

Keldysh representation of the functional integral for the interacting electron system with disorder is used to derive microscopically an effective action for dirty superconductors. In the most general case this action is a functional of the 8 x 8 matrix Q(t,t') which depends on two time variables, and on the fluctuating order parameter field and electric potential. We show that this approach reproduces, without the use of the replica trick, the well-known result for the Coulomb-induced renormalization of the electron-electron coupling constant in the Cooper channel. Turning to the new results, we calculate the effects of the Coulomb interaction upon: i) the subgap Andreev conductance between superconductor and 2D dirty normal metal, and ii) the Josephson proximity coupling between superconductive islands via such a metal. These quantities are shown to be strongly suppressed by the Coulomb interaction at sufficiently low temperatures due to both zero-bias anomaly in the density of states and disorder-enhanced repulsion in the Cooper channel.

Vortex Density of States and Absorption in Clean Layered Superconductors

We study the spectrum of the states localized in the vortex cores in the mixed state of clean layered superconductors. S-wave coupling is assumed. It is found that in a large region of parameters adjacent to the superclean case a new universal (i.e. independent of the density of impurities) class of level statistics arises. It is the circular unitary random matrix ensemble. The density of states for such conditions is calculated. The absorption resulting from the Landau-Zener transitions between these levels is different from the classical result for an isotropic three-dimensional system.

Spin-charge separation and Kondo effect in an open quantum dot

We study a quantum dot connected to the bulk by single-mode junctions at almost perfect conductance. Although the average charge $e\langle N \rangle$ of the dot is not discrete, its spin remains quantized: $s=1/2$ or $s=0$, depending (periodically) on the gate voltage. This drastic difference from the conventional mixed-valence regime stems from the existence of a broad-band, dense spectrum of discrete levels in the dot. In the doublet state, the Kondo effect develops at low temperatures. We find the Kondo temperature $T_K$ and the conductance at $T\lesssim T_K$.

Level statistics inside the vortex of a superconductor and symplectic random matrix theory in an external source

In the core of the vortex of a superconductor, energy levels appear inside the gap. We discuss here through a random matrix approach how these levels are broadened by impurities. It is first shown that the level statistics is governed by an ensemble consisting of a symplectic random potential added to a non-random matrix. A generalization of previous work on the unitary ensemble in the presence of an external source (which relied on the Itzykson-Zuber integral) is discussed for this symplectic case through the formalism introduced by Harish-Chandra and Duistermaat-Heckman. This leads to explicit formulae for the density of states and for the correlation functions, which describe the cross-over from the clean to the dirty limits.

Vortex mediated microwave absorption in superclean layered superconductors

In the superclean case the spectrum of vortex core excitations in the presence of disorder is not random but consists of two series of equally-spaced levels. The I-V characteristics of such superconductors displays many interesting phenomena. A series of resonances is predicted at frequencies commensurate with the spacing of the vortex excitations. These resonances reveal an even-odd anomaly. In the presence of one weak impurity the excitation levels can approach each other and almost cross. Absorption at very low frequencies is identified with the resonances arising in this case. The results of such microscopic theory coincide up to the order of magnitude with both the theory employing kinetic equation and the experiment. The non-linear effects associated with Zener transitions in such crossings are studied. These phenomena can be used as a probe of vortex core excitations.

Phase transition in a chain of quantum vortices

We consider interacting vortices in a quasi-one-dimensional array of Josephson junctions with small capacitance. If the charging energy of a junction is of the order of the Josephson energy, the fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter in the system are considerable, and the vortices behave as quantum particles. Their density may be tuned by an external magnetic field, and therefore one can control the commensurability of the one-dimensional vortex lattice with the lattice of Josephson junctions. We show that the interplay between the quantum nature of a vortex, and the long-range interaction between the vortices leads to the existence of a specific commensurate-incommensurate transition in a one-dimensional vortex lattice. In the commensurate phase an elementary excitation is a soliton, with energy separated from the ground state by a finite gap. This gap vanishes in the incommensurate phase. Each soliton carries a fraction of a flux quantum; the propagation of solitons leads to a finite resistance of the array. We find the dependence of the resistance activation energy on the magnetic field and parameters of the Josephson array. This energy consists of the above-mentioned gap, and also of a boundary pinning term, which is different in the commensurate and incommensurate phases. The developed theory allows us to explain quantitatively the available experimental data.

Quantum Superconductor-Metal Transition in a 2D Proximity-Coupled Array

We construct a theory of quantum fluctuatons in a regular array of small superconductive islands connected via low-resistance tunnel contacts to a dirty thin metal film. Electron-electron interaction in the film is assumed to be repulsive. The system is macroscopically superconductive when the distance between neighbouring islands is short enough. The zero-temperature phase transition from superconductive to normal-conductive state is shown to occur with the increase of distance between superconductive islands; the logarithm of the critical distance is proportional to the low-frequency zero-voltage Andreev conductance between the SC island and the film. This critical distance is always much less the than the two-dimensional localization length, so the considered effect develops when weak-localization corrections are still small. The dependence of the critical temperature on the film conductance and inter-island distance is found.

(4+N)-Dimensional Elastic Manifolds in Random Media: a Renormalization-Group Analysis

Motivated by the problem of weak collective pinning of vortex lattices in high-temperature superconductors, we study the model system of a four-dimensional elastic manifold with N transverse degrees of freedom (4+N-model) in a quenched disorder environment. We assume the disorder to be weak and short-range correlated, and neglect thermal effects. Using a real-space functional renormalization group (FRG) approach, we derive a RG equation for the pinning-energy correlator up to two-loop correction. The solution of this equation allows us to calculate the size R_c of collectively pinned elastic domains as well as the critical force F_c, i.e., the smallest external force needed to drive these domains. We find R_c prop. to delta_p^alpha_2 exp(alpha_1/delta_p) and F_c prop. to delta_p^(-2 alpha_2) exp(-2 alpha_1/delta_p), where delta_p <<1 parametrizes the disorder strength, alpha_1=(2/pi)^(N/2) 8 pi^2/(N+8), and alpha_2=2(5N+22)/(N+8)^2. In contrast to lowest-order perturbation calculations which we briefly review, we thus arrive at determining both alpha_1 (one-loop) and alpha_2 (two-loop).

Anomalous Charge Dynamics in the Superconducting State of Underdoped Cuprates

We present fermi liquid expressions for the low temperature behavior of the superfluid stiffness, explain why they differ from those suggested recently by Lee and Wen, and discuss their applicability to data on high-$T_c$ superconductors. We find that a consistent description requires a strong, doping dependent anisotropy, which affects states near the zone corners much more strongly than those near the zone diagonals.

Resistance of Layered Superclean Superconductors at Low Temperatures

The low energy excitation spectrum is found for a layered superconductor vortex with a small number of impurities inside the vortex core. All levels are found to be correlated. This leads to the strong enhancement of conductivity in superclean layered superconductors.
