Electromagnetic wave propagation in a nonlinear hyperbolic medium

The propagation of a quasi-harmonic electromagnetic wave in a bulk hyperbolic dielectric metamaterial is considered. If the group velocities dispersion is not taken into account, then wave propagation can be described either by the hyperbolic nonlinear Schrodinger equation or by the hyperbolic Manakov equations. It is shown that the region in the space of wave vectors in which the modulation instability of a spatially homogeneous wave is possible is not limited, in contrast to the case of ordinary media.

Propagation of Strongly Hybridized Edge Modes in Plasmonic Waveguides

In our work we investigate the propagation of optical modes in nanoscale hybrid plasmonic waveguides. Frequency domain Maxwell equations based simulations are implemented to study properties of mixed modes in 3D. The results of our analysis are applied to design an advanced hybrid waveguide with useful characteristics. It is demonstrated here how to couple two edge plasmons with a waveguide mode to form a hybrid waveguide well tuned for applications in the field of electro-optical transistors (modulators). A mixed polarization state of edge plasmons allows them to couple with a horizontally polarized (TE) optical mode (which is not possible for usual surface plasmons) and open the way to polarization independent plasmonic modulators.

Localized waves in the nonlinear rhombic waveguide array

Solitary electromagnetic waves propagating along the waveguides forming a rhombic one-dimensional lattice are considered. Two waveguides that are part of the unit cell are assumed to be made of an optical linear material, while the third waveguide from the same array is composed of material with the cubic nonlinearity. The equations of the coupled waves spreading in each waveguide are solved under some approximation. These solutions represent the breather like solitary waves, which are akin to three component soliton.

Polarization rotation by an rf-SQUID metasurface

We study the transmission and reflection of a plane electromagnetic wave through a two dimensional array of rf-SQUIDs. The basic equations describing the amplitudes of the magnetic field and current in the split-ring resonators are developed. These yield in the linear approximation the reflection and transmission coefficients. The polarization of the reflected wave is independent of the frequency of the incident wave and of its polarization; it is defined only by the orientation of the split-ring. The reflection and transmission coefficients have a strong resonance that is determined by the parameters of the rf-SQUID; its strength depends essentially on the incident angle.

Oppositely Directional Coupler: Example of the Forward Backward Waves Interaction in the Metamaterials

We consider the coupled electromagnetic waves propagating in a nonlinear coupler and in nonlinear waveguide array, which consists of alternating waveguides of positive and negative refraction indexes. The forward wave and backward wave interaction is realized in these devices. Gap solitons in a nonlinear oppositely directional coupler with one channel or both channels fabricated from nonlinear medium having negative refraction index are discussed. Generalization of the usually waveguide array is zigzag array. Due to zigzag configuration there are interactions between both nearest and next nearest neighboring waveguides exist. The system of evolution equations for coupled waves has the steady state solution describing the electromagnetic pulse running in the array. Numerical simulation demonstrates robustness of these solitary waves.

Modulation instability in nonlinear positive-negative index waveguide array

Modulation instability in a nonlinear optical waveguide array with alternating positive and negative refractive indices is investigated analytically. Particular solutions of a system of coupled nonlinear equations are found. These solutions describe propagation of the continuum backward and forward waves in longitudinal direction of considered system. Instability of these waves is investigated with a linear stability analysis. A gain spectrum depending on different parameters of considered system: electromagnetic field power and ratio of the backward to forward wave amplitude, is studied analytically and numerically. It was shown that in case of Bragg resonance the continuum waves are stable. If nonlinearity assists at one kind of waveguides only and another one is linear one then the modulation instability does not occur. Out of Bragg resonance in defocusing waveguides the instability of the continuum waves is reduced.

Second harmonic generation in dissipative metamaterials

Second harmonic generation is considered in lossy negative-index metamaterials. It is shown that energy transfer from fundamental to harmonic takes place in the entire sample for the range of phase mismatch values. Note that in conventional case this range collapses to the point (ideal phase matching). The dependance of the boundary of this range as function of dissipation values is obtained using computer simulations.

Fast control of the reflection of a ferroelectric by an extremely short pulse

We propose a new type of optical switch based on a ferroelectric. It is based on the gap which exists for waves propagating from a dielectric to a ferroelectric material. This gap depends on the polarization of the ferroelectric. We show that it can be shifted by a control electromagnetic pulse so that the material becomes transparent. This device would shift much faster than the relaxation time of the ferroelectric (1 nano s). Estimates are given for a real material.

Electrodynamics of a split-ring Josephson resonator in a microwave line

We consider the coupling of an electromagnetic wave to a split-ring Josephson oscillator or radio-frequency SQUID in the hysteretic regime. This device is similar to an atomic system in that it has a number of steady states. We show that one can switch between these with a suitable short external microwave pulse. The steady states can be characterized by their resonant lines which are of the Fano type. Using a static magnetic field, we can shift these spectral lines and lift their degeneracy.

High frequency polarization switching of a thin ferroelectric film

We consider both experimentally and analytically the transient oscillatory process that arises when a rapid change in voltage is applied to a $Ba_xSr_{1-x}TiO_3$ ferroelectric thin film deposited on an $Mg0$ substrate. High frequency ($\approx 10^{8} rad/s$) polarization oscillations are observed in the ferroelectric sample. These can be understood using a simple field-polarization model. In particular we obtain analytic expressions for the oscillation frequency and the decay time of the polarization fluctuation in terms of the material parameters. These estimations agree well with the experimental results.

Cavity with an embedded polarized film: an adapted spectral approach

We consider the modes of the electric field of a cavity where there is an embedded polarized dielectric film. The model consists in the Maxwell equations coupled to a Duffing oscillator for the film which we assume infinitely thin. We derive the normal modes of the system and show that they are orthogonal with a special scalar product which we introduce. These modes are well suited to describe the system even for a film of finite thickness. By acting on the film we demonstrate switching from one cavity mode to another. Since the system is linear, little energy is needed for this conversion. Moreover the amplitude equations describe very well this complex system under different perturbations (damping, forcing and nonlinearity) with very few modes. These results are very general and can be applied to different situations like for an atom in a cavity or a Josephson junction in a capacitor and this could be very useful for many nano-physics applications.

Solitary waves in plasmonic Bragg gratings

Light propagation in a Bragg periodic structure containing thin films with metallic nanoparticles is studied. Plasmonic resonance frequency, Bragg frequency, and light carrier frequency are assumed to be close. Exact solutions describing solitary gap-waves are found, and a light arrest phenomenon due to nonlinearity of plasmonic oscillations is studied.

Coherent optical pulse dynamics in nanocomposite plasmonic Bragg gratings

The propagation of solitary waves in a Bragg grating formed by an array of thin nanostructured dielectric films is considered. A system of equations of Maxwell-Duffing type and describing forward- and backward-propagating waves in such a grating, is derived. Exact solitary wave solutions are found, analyzed, and compared with the results of direct numerical simulations.

Effect of an Optical Negative Index Thin Film on Optical Bistability

We investigate nonlinear transmission in a layered structure consisting of a slab of positive index material (PIM) with Kerr-type nonlinearity and a sub-wavelength layer of linear negative index material (NIM) sandwiched between semi-infinite linear dielectrics. We find that a thin layer of NIM leads to significant changes in the hysteresis width when the nonlinear slab is illuminated at an angle near that of total internal reflection. Unidirectional diode-like transmission with enhanced operational range is demonstrated. These results may be useful for NIMs characterization and for designing novel NIMs based devices.

Electromagnetically induced switching of ferroelectric thin films

We analyze the interaction of an electromagnetic spike (one cycle) with a thin layer of ferroelectric medium with two equilibrium states. The model is the set of Maxwell equations coupled to the undamped Landau-Khalatnikov equation, where we do not assume slowly varying envelopes. From linear scattering theory, we show that low amplitude pulses can be completely reflected by the medium. Large amplitude pulses can switch the ferroelectric. Using numerical simulations and analysis, we study this switching for long and short pulses, estimate the switching times and provide useful information for experiments.

Nonlinear polaritons in Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We study the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with additional electromagnetic fields under Raman resonance condition. System of evolution equations describing ultra-short optical pulse propagation and photo-induced transport of cold atoms in optical lattice is derived. The steady state solution of these equations was found. There are new kinds of polaritonic solitary waves propagating.
