Laser-dressed vacuum polarization in a Coulomb field

We investigate quantum electrodynamic effects under the influence of an external, time-dependent electromagnetic field, which mediates dynamic modifications of the radiative corrections. Specifically, we consider the quantum electrodynamic vacuum-polarization tensor under the influence of two external background fields: a strong laser field and a nuclear Coulomb field. We calculate the charge and current densities induced by a nuclear Coulomb field in the presence of a laser field. We find the corresponding induced scalar and vector potentials. The induced potential, in first-order perturbation theory, leads to a correction to atomic energy levels. The external laser field breaks the rotational symmetry of the system. Consequently, the induced charge density is not spherically symmetric, and the energy correction therefore leads to a "polarized Lamb shift." In particular, the laser generates an additional potential with a quadrupole moment. The corresponding laser-dressed vacuum-polarization potential behaves like 1/r**3 at large distances, unlike the Uehling potential that vanishes exponentially for large r. Our investigation might be useful for other situations where quantum field theoretic phenomena are subjected to external fields of a rather involved structure.

The $g$ factor of an electron or muon bound by an arbitrary central potential

We consider the $g$ factor of a spin-1/2 particle (electron or muon) bound by an arbitrary central field. We present an approach which allows one to express the relativistic $g$ factor in terms of the binding energy. We derive the general expression for the correction to the $g$ factor caused by a deviation of the central potential from the Coulomb one. As the application of this method, we consider the corrections to the $g$ factor due to the finite nuclear size, including vacuum polarization radiative correction. The effect of the anomalous magnetic moment is also taken into account.

Polarizing mechanisms for stored $p$ and $\bar p$ beams interacting with a polarized target

Kinetics of the polarization buildup at the interaction of stored protons (antiprotons) with a polarized target is considered. It is demonstrated that for small scattering angles, when a projectile remains in the beam, the polarization buildup is completely due to the spin-flip transitions. The corresponding cross sections turn out to be negligibly small for a hydrogen gas target as well as for a pure electron target. For the latter, the filtering mechanism also does not provide a noticeable beam polarization.

Virtual light-by-light scattering and the g factor of a bound electron

The contribution of the light-by-light diagram to the g factor of electron and muon bound in Coulomb field is obtained. For electron in a ground state, our results are in good agreement with the results of other authors obtained numerically for large Z. For relatively small Z our results have essentially higher accuracy as compared to the previous ones. For muonic atoms, the contribution is obtained for the first time with the high accuracy in whole region of Z.

Vacuum polarization radiative correction to the parity violating electron scattering on heavy nuclei

The effect of vacuum polarization on the parity violating asymmetry in the elastic electron-nucleus scattering is considered. Calculations are performed in the high-energy approximation with an exact account for the electric field of the nucleus. It is shown that the radiative correction to the parity violating asymmetry is logarithmically enhanced and the value of the correction is about -1%.

Analytical calculation of Coulomb corrections to $e^+e^-$ pair production at intermediate photon energies

First correction to the high-energy asymptotics of the total $e^+e^-$ photoproduction cross section in the electric field of a heavy atom is obtained with the exact account of this field. The consideration is based on the use of the quasiclassical electron Green function in an external electric field. The influence of screening on the Coulomb corrections is examined in the leading approximation. It turns out that the high-energy asymptotics of the corresponding correction is independent of the photon energy. The detailed comparison of our results with experimental data is performed. This comparison has justified the analytical result and allowed us to elaborate a simple ansatz for the next-to-leading correction. Using this ansatz, good agreement with the experimental data is obtained for photon energies above a few $MeV$. In the region where both produced particles are relativistic, the corrections to the high-energy asymptotics of the electron (positron) spectrum are obtained. In addition, analogous corrections to the bremsstrahlung spectrum are derived starting from the corresponding results for pair production.

High-energy expansion of Coulomb corrections to the e+e- photoproduction cross section

First correction to the high-energy asymptotics of the total $e^+e^-$ photoproduction cross section in the electric field of a heavy atom is derived with the exact account of this field. The consideration is based on the use of the quasiclassical electron Green function in an external electric field. The next-to-leading correction to the cross section is discussed. The influence of screening on the Coulomb corrections is examined in the leading approximation. It turns out that the high-energy asymptotics of the corresponding correction is independent of the photon energy. In the region where both produced particles are relativistic, the corrections to the high-energy asymptotics of the electron (positron) spectrum are derived. Our results for the total cross section are in good agreement with experimental data for photon energies down to a few $MeV$. In addition, the corrections to the bremsstrahlung spectrum are obtained from the corresponding results for pair production.

Coulomb corrections to bremsstrahlung in electric field of heavy atom at high energies

The differential and partially integrated cross sections are considered for bremsstrahlung from high-energy electrons in atomic field with the exact account of this field. The consideration exploits the quasiclassical electron Green's function and wave functions in an external electric field. It is shown that the Coulomb corrections to the differential cross section are very susceptible to screening. Nevertheless, the Coulomb corrections to the cross section summed up over the final-electron states are independent of screening in the leading approximation over a small parameter $1/mr_{scr}$ ($r_{scr}$ is a screening radius, $m$ is the electron mass, $\hbar=c=1$). Bremsstrahlung from an electron beam of the finite size on heavy nucleus is considered as well. Again, the Coulomb corrections to the differential probability are very susceptible to the beam shape, while those to the probability integrated over momentum transfer are independent of it, apart from the trivial factor, which is the electron-beam density at zero impact parameter. For the Coulomb corrections to the bremsstrahlung spectrum, the next-to-leading terms with respect to the parameters $m/ε$ ($ε$ is the electron energy) and $1/mr_{scr}$ are obtained.

Finite nuclear size effect on Lamb shift of s1/2, p1/2, and p3/2 atomic states

We consider one-loop self-energy and vacuum polarization radiative corrections to the shift of atomic energy level due to finite nuclear size. Analytic expressions for vacuum polarization corrections are derived. For the self-energy of p1/2 and p3/2 states in addition to already known terms we derive next-to-leading nonlogarithmic Zα-terms. Together with contributions obtained earlier the terms derived in the present work give explicit analytic expressions for s1/2 and p1/2 corrections which agree with results of previous numerical calculations up to Z=100 (Z is the nuclear charge number). We also show that the finite nuclear size radiative correction for a p3/2 state is not small compared to the similar correction for a p1/2 state at least for small Z.

The updated results of the precise measurements of the processes e+e-->rho->pi+pi-, e+e-->omega->pi+pi-pi0 and e+e-->phi->KLKS performed by the CMD-2 collaboration are presented. The update appeared necessary due an overestimate of the integrated luminosity in previous analyses.

Corrections to deuterium hyperfine structure due to deuteron excitations

We consider the corrections to deuterium hyperfine structure originating from the two-photon exchange between electron and deuteron, with the deuteron excitations in the intermediate states. In particular, the motion of the two intermediate nucleons as a whole is taken into account. The problem is solved in the zero-range approximation. The result is in good agreement with the experimental value of the deuterium hyperfine splitting.

Calculation of radiative corrections to the effect of parity nonconservation in heavy atoms

We calculate the self-energy and the vertex radiative corrections to the effect of parity nonconservation in heavy atoms. The sum of the corrections is of the form ${\cal A}\ln(λ_C/r_0)+{\calB}$, where ${\cal A}$ and ${\cal B}$ are functions of $Zα$, and $λ_C$ and $r_0$ are the Compton wavelength and the nuclear radius, respectively. The function ${\cal A}$ is calculated exactly in $Zα$ and the function ${\cal B}$ is calculated in the leading order. In the leading order ${\cal A}\propto α(Zα)^2$ and ${\cal B}\propto α(Zα)$. The sum of the corrections is -0.85% for Cs and -1.48% for Tl. Using these results we have performed analysis of the experimental data on atomic parity nonconservation. The values obtained for the nuclear weak charge, $Q_W=-72.81(28)_{exp}(36)_{theor}$ for Cs and $Q_W=-116.8(1.2)_{exp}(3.4)_{theor}$ for Tl, agree with predictions of the standard model within $0.6σ$. As an application of our approach we have also calculated dependence of the Lamb shift on the finite nuclear size.

Finite nuclear size and Lamb shift of p-wave atomic states

We consider corrections to the Lamb shift of p-wave atomic states due to the finite nuclear size (FNS). In other words, these are radiative corrections to the atomic isotop shift related to FNS. It is shown that the structure of the corrections is qualitatively different from that for s-wave states. The perturbation theory expansion for the relative correction for a $p_{1/2}$-state starts from $α\ln(1/Zα)$-term, while for $s_{1/2}$-states it starts from $Zα^2$ term. Here $α$ is the fine structure constant and $Z$ is the nuclear charge. In the present work we calculate the $α$-terms for $2p$-states, the result for $2p_{1/2}$-state reads $(8α/9π)[\ln(1/(Zα)^2)+0.710]$. Even more interesting are $p_{3/2}$-states. In this case the ``correction'' is by several orders of magnitude larger than the ``leading'' FNS shift.

Radiative corrections and parity nonconservation in heavy atoms

The self-energy and the vertex radiative corrections to the effect of parity nonconservation in heavy atoms are calculated analytically in orders Z alpha^2 and Z^2 alpha^3 ln(lambda_C/r_0), where lambda_C and r_0 being the Compton wavelength and the nuclear radius, respectively. The value of the radiative correction is -0.85% for Cs and -1.41% for Tl. Using these results we have performed analysis of the experimental data on atomic parity nonconservation. The obtained values of the nuclear weak charge, Q_W=-72.90(28)_{exp}(35)_{theor} for Cs, and Q_W=-116.7(1.2)_{exp}(3.4)_{theor} for Tl, agree with predictions of the standard model. As an application of our approach we have also calculated analytically dependence of the Lamb shift on the finite nuclear size.

Electric polarizabilities of proton and neutron and the relativistic center-of-mass coordinate

We argue that the relativistic correction $δ{\bf R}_{c.m.}$ to the center-of-mass vector can lead to the approximate equality of the proton and neutron electric polarizabilities in the quark model. The explicit form of $δ{\bf R}_{c.m.}$ depends only on the non-relativistic potential between quarks. In particular, this correction is the same for the potential generated by Lorentz-vector and -scalar interactions.

Photon splitting in atomic fields

Photon splitting due to vacuum polarization in the electric field of an atom is considered. We survey different theoretical approaches to the description of this nonlinear QED process and several attempts of its experimental observation. We present the results of the lowest-order perturbation theory as well as those obtained within the quasiclassical approximation being exact in the external field strength. The experiment where photon splitting was really observed for the first time is discussed in details. The results of this experiment are compared with recent theoretical estimations.
