Mixed Orbital Ground States of Fe2+ in Prussian Blues

We report on the mixed-orbital ground state compounds analogous to the mixed-valence ones. Orbital doublet and singlet ground states of the Fe2+ ion displayed in Moessbauer spectra of the Prussian blue analogues AyFe3-y[Co(CN)6]2xH2O (y<1) are interconverting to each other as temperature changes for A = K, Na. Relative weight of orbital singlet ground states increases with lowering temperature. In the alcali-free cobalticyanides, the Moessbauer spectra are dominated by quadrupole-splt doublets of the same origin with a large splitting characteristic of the Fe2+ species coordinated by two (at least) oxygen atoms of water molecules in cis-configuration. Single type octahedral coordination of Fe2+ is isolated in A-filled cobalticyanides for A=Rb, Cs to be characterized by the narrower quadrupole spectrum associated with the orbital doublet ground states. Ionic exchange of K for Cs in KFe[Co(CN)6]H2O results in predominance of the orbital singlet, i.e., in enhanced anisotropy of the Fe2+ valence electrons. We found hence that the Fe2+ charge distribution can be modified together with crystal size at the step of synthesis owing to distortion isomerism.

Nuclear forward scattering in particulate matter: dependence of lineshape on particle size distribution

In synchrotron Moessbauer spectroscopy, the nuclear exciton polariton manifests itself in the lineshape of the spectra of nuclear forward scattering (NFS) Fourier-transformed from time domain to frequency domain. This lineshape is generally described by the convolution of two intensity factors. One of them is Lorentzian related to free decay. We derived the expressions for the second factor related to Frenkel exciton polariton effects at propagation of synchrotron radiation in Moessbauer media. Parameters of this Frenkelian shape depend on the spatial configuration of Moessbauer media. In a layer of uniform thickness, this factor is found to be a simple hypergeometric function. Next, we consider the particles spread over a 2D surface or diluted in non-Moessbauer media to exclude an overlap of ray shadows by different particles. Deconvolving the purely polaritonic component of linewidths is suggested as a simple procedure sharpening the experimental NFS spectra in frequency domain. The lineshapes in these sharpened spectra are theoretically expressed via the parameters of the particle size distributions (PSD). Then, these parameters are determined through least-squares fitting of the line shapes.

Lineshapes in Nuclear Forward Scattering Frequency Spectra

A new method for investigating the particle size distribution (PSD) is suggested using the nuclear forward scattering (NFS) of synchrotron radiation. The distribution of Weibull-Gnedenko is used to illustrate the relationship between the NFS lineshape and PSD.

Condensation of a tetrahedra rigid-body libration mode in HoBaCo4O7 : the origin of phase transition at 355 K

Rietveld profiles, Moessbauer spectra and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) were analyzed through the structural phase transition at Ts = 355 K in HoBaCo4O7. Excess of the oxygen content over O7 was avoided via annealing the samples in argon flow at 600 degree C. Space groups (S.G.) Pbn21c and P63mc were used to refine the structure parameters in the low- and high-temperature phases, respectively. Additionally, the Cmc21 symmetry was considered as a concurrent model of structure of the low-temperature phase. In the high-temperature phase, severe anisotropy of thermal motion of the major part of the oxygen atoms was observed. This anisotropic motion turns to be quenched as the sample is cooled below Ts. The variation of quadrupole splitting near Ts is not similar to a steplike anomaly frequently seen at the charge-ordering transition. We observe instead a dip-like anomaly of the average quadrupole splitting near Ts. Narrow distribution of the electric field gradient (EFG) over different cobalt sites is observed and explained on the basis of point-charge model. XAFS spectra show no evidence of significant difference between YBaCo4O7 (T > Ts) and HoBaCo4O7 (T < Ts). The origin of the transition at Ts is ascribed to the condensation of the libration phonon mode associated with the rigid-body rotational movements of the starlike tetrahedral units, the building blocks of kagome network. It is shown that the condensation of the libration mode is not compatible with translation symmetry for the hexagonal S.G., but compatible for the orthorhombic S.G. The orthorhombic lattice parameters and EFG components (Vxx, Vyy, Vzz) vary smoothly with temperature at approaching Ts and closely follow each other.

Manganite charge and orbitally ordered and disordered states probed by Fe substitution into Mn site in LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5, LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O6 and LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5.5 (Ln=Y, Gd, Sm, Nd, Pr, La)

The layered manganese oxides LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04Oy (Ln=Y, Gd, Sm, Nd, Pr, La) have been synthesized for y=5, 5.5 and 6. In the oxygen-saturated state (y=6) they exhibit the charge and orbital order at ambient temperature for Ln=Y, Gd, Sm, but unordered eg-electronic system for Ln=La,Pr,Nd. Fourfold increase of quadrupole splitting was observed owing to the charge and orbital ordering. This is in agreement with the jumplike increase in distortion of the reduced perovskite-like cell for the charge and orbitally ordered manganites compared to the unordered ones. Substitution of 2 percents of Mn by Fe suppresses the temperatures of structural and magnetic transitions by 20 to 50 K. Parameters of the crystal lattices and the room-temperature Mössbauer spectra were studied on forty samples whose structures were refined within five symmetry groups: P4/mmm, P4/nmm, Pm-3m, Icma and P2/m. Overwhelming majority of the Fe species are undifferentiated in the Mössbauer spectra for most of the samples. Such the single-component spectra in the two-site structures are explained by the preference of Fe towards the site of Mn(III) and by the segmentation of the charge and orbitally ordered domains.

Anisotropic phonon DOS: the application of Rietveld and Mossbauer texture analysis in aligned powders

While synthesizing the single crystals of novel materials is not always feasible, orienting the layered polycrystals becomes an attractive method in the studies of angular dependencies of inelastic scattering of x-rays or neutrons. Putting in use the Rietveld analysis of layered structures in novel manganites and cuprates we develop the studies of their anisotropic properties with oriented powders instead of single crystals. Densities of phonon states (DOS) and atomic thermal displacememts (ATD) are anisotropic in the A-site ordered manganites LnBaMn2Oy of both y=5 and y=6 series (Ln=Y, La, Sm, Gd). We establish the angular dependence of DOS on textures of arbitrary strengths, link the textures observed by x-ray and gamma-ray techniques, and solve the problem of disentanglement of Goldanskii-Karyagin effect (GKE) and texture in Moessbauer spectra.

Vibrational abisotropy and quadrupole interactions of Fe substituted into Mn site of the charge and orbitally ordered and disordered layered manganites LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5 and LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O6 (Ln=Y,Gd,Sm,La)

A-site ordered manganites LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5 and LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O6 are investigated by x-ray full-profile diffraction and Moessbauer spectroscopy. Powder samples were oriented with preferred orientation of platy crystallites in the plane of sample surface. March-Dollase function of preferred orientation was employed in analysing both the Rietveld patterns and the Mossbauer spectra. Combined effects of preffered orientation and vibrational anisotropy on the line area asymmetry of Mossbauer doublet are analysed. Constructive and destructive interference between the effects of texture and vibrational anisotropy is observed in LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O6 and LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5, respectively. Both series of the manganites show the main axis of electric field gradient perpendicular to layers (Vzz along c) with Vzz>0 in oxygen-poor series and Vzz<0 in oxygen-rich series. Charge-orbital order (COO) melting around Fe dopants explains the single-site spectra observed for several Ln in both "O5" and "O6" series, except LaBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5. However, the short-range COO persists to be observed in magnetization and in Rietveld patterns.

Persistence of characteristics of an ordered flux line lattice above the second peak in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+ δ}$

We report Small Angle Neutron Scattering measurements of the flux lines lattice (FLL) in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+ δ}$. As previously reported, the scattered intensity decreases strongly when the magnetic field is increased, but it remains measurable far above the second peak. The direct observation of Bragg peaks proves that the characteristics of a lattice are still present. No structural features related to a symmetry breaking, such as a liquid like or an amorphous state, can be observed. However, the associated scattered intensity is very low and is difficult to explain. We discuss the coexistence between two FLL states as a possible interpretation.

Dispersion of the odd magnetic resonant mode in near-optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

We report a neutron scattering study of the spin excitation spectrum in the superconducting state of slightly overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d system (Tc=87 K). We focus on the dispersion of the resonance peak in the superconducting state that is due to a S=1 collective mode. The measured spin excitation spectrum bears a strong similarity to the spectrum of the YBa2Cu3O6+x system for a similar doping level i.e. x= 0.95-1), which consists of intersecting upward- and downward-dispersing branches. A close comparison of the threshold of the electron-hole spin flip continuum, deduced from angle resolved photo-emission measurements in the same system, indicates that the magnetic response in the superconducting state is confined, in both energy and momentum, below the gapped Stoner continuum. In contrast to YBa2Cu3O6+x, the spin excitation spectrum is broader than the experimental resolution. In the framework of an itinerant-electron model, we quantitatively relate this intrinsic energy width to the superconducting gap distribution observed in scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments. Our study further suggests a significant in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic response.

Odd and even magnetic resonant modes in highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+delta}

We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram.

The vortex depinning transition in untwinned YBaCuO using complex impedance measurements

We present surface impedance measurement of the vortex linear response in a large untwinned YBCO crystal. The depinning spectra obtained over a broad frequency range (100 Hz- 30 MHz) are those of a surface pinned vortex lattice with a free flux flow resistivity (two modes response). The critical current in the "Campbell" like regime and the flux flow resistivity in the dissipative regime are extracted. Those two parameters are affected by the first order transition, showing that this transition may be related to the electronic state of vortices.

Magnetic-field-induced finite-size effect in the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-a comparison to rotating superfluid 4 He

The effect of strong magnetic fields (11 T) on superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O7-d is investigated using high-resolution thermal expansion. We show that the field-induced broadening of the superconducting transition is due to a finite-size effect resulting from the field-induced vortex-vortex length scale. The physics of this broadening has recently been elucidated for the closely related case of rotating superfluid 4 He [R. Haussmann, Phys. Rev. B60, 12373 (1999)]. Our results imply that the primary effect of magnetic fields of the order of 10 T is to destroy the phase coherence; the pairing, on the other hand, appears to be quite insensitive to these fields.

Electrodynamics of the vortex lattice in untwinned YBaCuO by complex impedance measurements

We report complex impedance measurements in an untwinned YBaCuO crystal. Our broad frequency range covers both the quasi static response and the resistive response of the vortex lattice. It allow us to characterize the irreversibility line without the need of any frequency dependent pinning parameters. We confirm the validity of the two modes model of vortex dynamic, and extract both the surface critical current and the flux flow resistivity around the first order transition $T_{m}$. This latter is identified by the abrupt loss of pinning and by an unexpected step of $ρ_{ff}(T)$ at $T_{m}$.

Superconducting Gap and Strong In-Plane Anisotropy in Untwinned YBa2Cu3O7-d

With significantly improved sample quality and instrumental resolution, we clearly identify in the (pi,0) ARPES spectra from YBa2Cu3O6.993, in the superconducting state, the long-sought `peak-dip-hump' structure. This advance allows us to investigate the large a-b anisotropy of the in-plane electronic structure including, in particular, a 50% difference in the magnitude of the superconducting gap that scales with the energy position of the hump feature. This anisotropy, likely induced by the presence of the CuO chains, raises serious questions about attempts to quantitatively explain the YBa2Cu3O7-d data from various experiments using models based on a perfectly square lattice.

Angle-resolved photoemission study of insulating and metallic Cu-O chains in PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ and PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$

We compare the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the hole-doped Cu-O chains in PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (Pr123) and in PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ (Pr124). While, in Pr123, a dispersive feature from the chain takes a band maximum at $k_b$ (momentum along the chain) $\sim$ $π/4$ and loses its spectral weight around the Fermi level, it reaches the Fermi level at $k_b$ $\sim$ $π/4$ in Pr124. Although the chains in Pr123 and Pr124 are approximately 1/4-filled, they show contrasting behaviors: While the chains in Pr123 have an instability to charge ordering, those in Pr124 avoid it and show an interesting spectral feature of a metallic coupled-chain system.

Compressibility and thermal expansion of YBa2Cu3Ox

The linear compressibilities and the thermal expansion of an untwinned, nearly optimal doped YBa2Cu3O6.94 single crystal were measured along the three crystallographic axes with a high-resolution dilatometer mounted in a high-pressure cell. The measurements were performed in a temperature range from 50 K to 320 K under hydrostatic gas pressure of maximal 0.65 GPa. At a temperature of 300 K the measured bulk modulus is reduced and shows a very strong enhancement under increasing pressure due to pressure-induced oxygen ordering. This ordering process can also be related to a glass transition seen in the thermal expansion above 225 K. At lower temperatures, when oxygen ordering is frozen, the bulk modulus is increased and shows a significantly reduced enhancement under pressure. This pressure dependence, however, is still anomalous high, probably caused by bonds of extremely different compressibilities within the unit cell. The widely spread literature data of the bulk modulus can be explained by this high pressure dependence.

Angle-resolved photoemission study of untwinned PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$: undoped CuO$_2$ plane and doped CuO$_3$ chain

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study on untwinned PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$, which has low resistivity but does not show superconductivity. We have observed a dispersive feature with a band maximum around ($π$/2,$π$/2), indicating that this band is derived from the undoped CuO$_2$ plane. We have observed another dispersive band exhibiting one-dimensional character, which we attribute to signals from the doped CuO$_3$ chain. The overall band dispersion of the one-dimensional band agrees with the prediction of $t-J$ model calculation with parameters relevant to cuprates except that the intensity near the Fermi level is considerably suppressed in the experiment.
