Extended PIC schemes for physics in ultra-strong laser fields: review and developments

We review common extensions of particle-in-cell (PIC) schemes which account for strong field phenomena in laser-plasma interactions. After describing the physical processes of interest and their numerical implementation, we provide solutions for several associated methodological and algorithmic problems. We propose a modified event generator that precisely models the entire spectrum of incoherent particle emission without any low-energy cutoff, and which imposes close to the weakest possible demands on the numerical time step. Based on this, we also develop an adaptive event generator that subdivides the time step for locally resolving QED events, allowing for efficient simulation of cascades. Further, we present a new and unified technical interface for including the processes of interest in different PIC implementations. Two PIC codes which support this interface, PICADOR and ELMIS, are also briefly reviewed.

Lighting up the Christmas tree: high-intensity laser interactions with a nano-structured target

We perform a numerical study of the interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with a nano-structured target. In particular, we study a target where the nano-structuring increases the absorption rate as compared to the flat target case. The transport of electrons within the target, and in particular in the nano-structure, is analysed. It is shown that it is indeed possible, using a terawatt class laser, to light up a nano-scale Christmas tree. Due to the form of the tree we achieve very strong edge fields, in particular at the top where the star is located. Such edge fields, as here located at ion rich spots, makes strong acceleration gradients possible. It also results in a nice, warm glow suitable for the holiday season.

Testing numerical implementations of strong field electrodynamics

We test current numerical implementations of laser-matter interactions by comparison with exact analytical results. Focussing on photon emission processes, it is found that the numerics accurately reproduce analytical emission spectra in all considered regimes, except for the harmonic structures often singled out as the most significant high intensity/multi-photon effects. We find that this discrepancy originates in the use of the locally constant field approximation.

Light-Front Quantum Chromodynamics: A framework for the analysis of hadron physics

An outstanding goal of physics is to find solutions that describe hadrons in the theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). For this goal, the light-front Hamiltonian formulation of QCD (LFQCD) is a complementary approach to the well-established lattice gauge method. LFQCD offers access to the hadrons' nonperturbative quark and gluon amplitudes, which are directly testable in experiments at existing and future facilities. We present an overview of the promises and challenges of LFQCD in the context of unsolved issues in QCD that require broadened and accelerated investigation. We identify specific goals of this approach and address its quantifiable uncertainties.

Anomalous radiative trapping in laser fields of extreme intensity

We demonstrate that charged particles in a sufficiently intense standing wave are compressed toward, and oscillate synchronously at, the maxima of the electric field. This unusual trapping behaviour, which we call 'anomalous radiative trapping' (ART), opens up new possibilities for the generation of radiation and particle beams, both of which are high-energy, directed and collimated. ART also provides a mechanism for particle control in high-intensity QED experiments.

Probing nonperturbative QED with optimally focused laser pulses

We study nonperturbative pair production in intense, focused laser fields called e-dipole pulses. We address the conditions required, such as the quality of the vacuum, for reaching high intensities without initiating beam-depleting cascades, the number of pairs which can be created, and experimental detection of the created pairs. We find that e-dipole pulses offer an optimal method of investigating nonperturbative QED.

Probing the ground state in gauge theories

We consider two very different models of the flux tube linking two heavy quarks: a string linking the matter fields and a Coulombic description of two separately gauge invariant charges. We compare how close they are to the unknown true ground state in compact U(1) and the SU(2) Higgs model. Simulations in compact U(1) show that the string description is better in the confined phase but the Coulombic description is best in the deconfined phase; the last result is shown to agree with analytical calculations. Surprisingly in the non-abelian theory the Coulombic description is better in both the Higgs and confined phases. This indicates a significant difference in the width of the flux tubes in the two theories.

Timelike T-duality in the string field Schrodinger functional

Timelike T-duality of string theory appears as a symmetry of time evolution in string field theory, exchanging evolution through times t and 1/t, and exchanging boundary states with backgrounds. This is demonstrated by constructing the string field Schrodinger functional, the generator of time evolution, based on Feynman diagram arguments and in analogy with quantum field theory. There, the functional can be described using only properties of first quantised particles on a timelike orbifold. Using new sewing rules applicable to both open and closed strings we generalise this approach to bosonic string theory and express the string field Schrodinger functional in terms of strings on S^1/Z_2.

Radial evolution in anti-de Sitter spacetime

Properties of Green's functions may be derived in either first or second quantisation. We illustrate this with a factorisation property for propagators in arbitrary spacetimes, and apply it to scalar fields in AdS space.

The vacuum state functional of interacting string field theory

We show that the vacuum state functional for both open and closed string field theories can be constructed from the vacuum expectation values it must generate. The method also applies to quantum field theory and as an application we give a diagrammatic description of the equivalance between Schrodinger and covariant repreresentations of field theory.
