Precise measurement of the $γ$-decay probability of the Hoyle state with a new triple coincidence-detection method

We measured the $γ$-decay probability of the Hoyle state with a new method of triple coincidence detection of a scattered $α$ particle, a recoil $\rm ^{12}C$ nucleus, and a $γ$ ray in inelastic alpha scattering on $\rm ^{12}C$. This method successfully enabled a low-background measurement and a precise determination of the $γ$-decay probability of the Hoyle state as $Γ_\mathrmγ/Γ=[4.00 \pm 0.22 \mathrm{(sta.)} \pm 0.18 \mathrm{(sys.)}]\times10^{-4}$, which is consistent with the previous literature value. Therefore, we concluded that the literature value can be reliably used in the study of nucleosynthesis in the universe.

Lifetimes of the $2^+_1$ and $4^+_1$ states of the neutron-rich nuclide $^{200}$Pt

The lifetimes of the $2^+_1$ and $4^+_1$ states of $^{200}$Pt were measured applying the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. Excited states were populated in the $^{198}$Pt($^{18}$O, $^{16}$O)$^{200}$Pt two-neutron transfer reaction at the $9\,\text{MV}$ tandem accelerator at the IFIN-HH in Măgurele, Romania. The resulting $B(E2)$ values of the $2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^+_1$ and $4^+_1 \rightarrow 2^+_1$ transitions as well as the $B_{4/2}$ ratio of $2.08(32)$ indicate the nuclear structure evolving towards sphericity when approaching the neutron shell closure at $N = 126$. The $B(E2; 2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^+_1)$ values of Pt and Hg are compared to values of Te, Xe and Ba as both regions of the nuclear chart show similar structural effects.

Determining the Proximity Effect Induced Magnetic Moment in Graphene by Polarized Neutron Reflectivity and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism

We report the magnitude of the induced magnetic moment in CVD-grown epitaxial and rotated-domain graphene in proximity with a ferromagnetic Ni film, using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The XMCD spectra at the C K-edge confirms the presence of a magnetic signal in the graphene layer and the sum rules give a magnetic moment of up to $\sim\,0.47\,μ$_B/C atom induced in the graphene layer. For a more precise estimation, we conducted PNR measurements. The PNR results indicate an induced magnetic moment of $\sim$ 0.53 $μ$_B/C atom at 10 K for rotated graphene and $\sim$ 0.38 $μ$_B/C atom at 10 K for epitaxial graphene. Additional PNR measurements on graphene grown on a non-magnetic Ni_9Mo_1 substrate, where no magnetic moment in graphene is measured, suggest that the origin of the induced magnetic moment is due to the opening of the graphene's Dirac cone as a result of the strong C pz-3d hybridization.

Growth and Characterisation Studies of Eu$_3$O$_4$ Thin Films Grown on Si/SiO$_2$ and Graphene

We report the growth, structural and magnetic properties of the less studied Eu-oxide phase, Eu$_3$O$_4$, thin films grown on a Si/SiO$_2$ substrate and Si/SiO$_2$/graphene using molecular beam epitaxy. The X-ray diffraction scans show that highly-textured crystalline Eu$_3$O$_4$(001) films are grown on both substrates, whereas the film deposited on graphene has a better crystallinity than that grown on the Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. The SQUID measurements show that both films have a Curie temperature of about 5.5 K, with a magnetic moment of 0.0032 emu/g at 2 K. The mixed-valency of the Eu cations has been confirmed by the qualitative analysis of the depth-profile X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements with the Eu$^{2+}$ : Eu$^{3+}$ ratio of 28 : 72. However, surprisingly, our films show no metamagnetic behaviour as reported for the bulk and powder form. Furthermore, the Raman spectroscopy scans show that the growth of the Eu$_3$O$_4$ thin films has no damaging effect on the underlayer graphene sheet. Therefore, the graphene layer is expected to retain its properties.

Table-like magnetocaloric effect and enhanced refrigerant capacity in EuO1-δ thin films

An approach to adjusting the conduction band population for tuning the magnetic and magnetocaloric response of EuO1-δ thin films through control of oxygen vacancies (δ = 0, 0.025, and 0.09) is presented. The films each showed a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition around 65 K, with an additional magnetic ordering transition at higher temperatures in the oxygen deficient samples. All transitions are observed to be of second order. A maximum magnetic entropy change of 6.4 J/kg K over a field change of 2 T with a refrigerant capacity of 223 J/kg was found in the sample with δ = 0, and in all cases the refrigerant capacities of the thin films under study were found to exceed that reported for bulk EuO. Adjusting the oxygen content was shown to produce table-like magnetocaloric effects, desirable for ideal Ericsson-cycle magnetic refrigeration. These films are thus excellent candidates for small-scale magnetic cooling technology in the liquid nitrogen temperature range.

Shape Coexistence at Zero Spin in 64Ni Driven by the Monopole Tensor Interaction

The low-spin structure of the semimagic 64Ni nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N = 40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

High-resolution study of excited states in 158Gd with (p,t) reactions

The excitation spectra in the deformed nucleus 158Gd have been studied with high energy resolution by means of the (p,t) reaction using the Q3D spectrograph facility at the Munich Tandem accelerator. The angular distributions of tritons were measured for more than 200 excited states seen in the triton spectra up to 4.3 MeV. A number of 36 excited 0+ states (five tentative), have been assigned by comparison of experimental angular distributions with the calculated ones using the CHUCK code. Assignments for levels with higher spins are the following: 95 for 2+ states, 64 for 4+ states, 14 for 6+ states and about 20 for negative parity states. Sequences of states which can be treated as rotational bands are selected. The analysis of the moments of inertia defined for these bands is carried out. This high number of excited states in a deformed nucleus, close to a complete level scheme, constitutes a very good ground to check models of nuclear structure. The large ensembles of states with the same spin-parity offer unique opportunities for statistical analysis. Such an analysis for the 0+, 2+ and 4+ states sequences, for all K-values and for well-determined projections K of the angular momentum is performed. The obtained data may indicate on a K symmetry breaking. Experimental data are compared with interacting boson model (IBM) calculations using the spdf version of the model. The energies of the low-lying levels, the transition probabilities in the first bands and the distribution in transfer intensity of the 0+ states are calculated and compared with experiment.

Normal and intruder configurations in $^{34}$Si populated in the $β^-$ decay of $^{34}$Mg and $^{34}$Al

The structure of $^{34}$Si was studied through $γ$ spectroscopy separately in the $β^-$ decays of $^{34}$Mg and $^{34}$Al at the ISOLDE facility of CERN. Different configurations in $^{34}$Si were populated independently from the two recently identified $β$-decaying states in $^{34}$Al having spin-parity assignments $J^π= 4^-$ dominated by the normal configuration $π(d_{5/2})^{-1} \otimes ν(f_{7/2})$ and $J^π= 1^+$ by the intruder configuration $π(d_{5/2})^{-1} \otimes ν(d_{3/2})^{-1}(f_{7/2})^{2}$. The paper reports on spectroscopic properties of $^{34}$Si such as an extended level scheme, spin and parity assignments based on log($ft$) values and $γ$-ray branching ratios, absolute $β$ feeding intensities and neutron emission probabilities. A total of 11 newly identified levels and 26 transitions were added to the previously known level scheme of $^{34}$Si. Large scale shell-model calculations using the {\sc sdpf-u-mix} interaction, able to treat higher order intruder configurations, are compared with the new results and conclusions are drawn concerning the predictive power of {\sc sdpf-u-mix}, the $N=20$ shell gap, the level of mixing between normal and intruder configurations for the 0$_1^+$, 0$_2^+$ and 2$_1^+$ states and the absence of triaxial deformation in $^{34}$Si.

Excited states of the odd-odd nucleus 158Eu from the (d,alpha) reaction

Excited states in the 158Eu nucleus have been determined with the 160Gd(d, alpha)158Eu reaction, studied at an incident energy of 18.0 MeV with the Munich tandem and the Q3D spectrograph. More than 50 excited states have been determined up to 1.6 MeV excitation, some of them corresponding to states previously observed in the beta-decay of 158Sm. The number of levels found in this nucleus at low excitation energies follows the systematic trend of the level densities in the other isotopes with mass 152-156.

New data on $0^+$ states in $^{158}$Gd

Excited states in the deformed nucleus $^{158}$Gd have been studied in the (p,t) reaction by using the Munich Tandem and Q3D spectrograph. 30 new excited 0$^+$ states (three tentative) have been assigned up to the 4.3 MeV excitation energy. The total number of 34 excited 0$^+$ states (four tentatively assigned) in a deformed nucleus, close to a complete level scheme, offers a new opportunity to test nuclear models and obtain more information on the structure of these special states.

Characterisation of Ferromagnetic Rings for Zernike Phase Plates using the Aharonov-Bohm effect

Holographic measurements on magnetised thin-film cobalt rings have demonstrated both onion and vortex states of magnetisation. For a ring in the vortex state, the difference between phases of electron paths that pass through the ring and those that travel outside it was found to agree very well with Aharonov-Bohm theory within measurement error. Thus the magnetic flux in thin-film rings of ferromagnetic material can provide the phase shift required for phase plates in transmission electron microscopy. When a ring of this type is used as a phase plate, scattered electrons will be intercepted over a radial range similar to the ring width. A cobalt ring of thickness 20 nm can produce a phase difference of pi/2 from a width of just under 30 nm, suggesting that the range of radial interception for this type of phase plate can be correspondingly small.

Thickness-dependent magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient EuO

We have studied how the magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient EuO sputtered thin films vary as a function of thickness. The magnetic moment, measured by polarized neutron reflectometry, and the Curie temperature are found to decrease with reducing thickness. Our results indicate that the reduced number of nearest neighbors, band bending and the partial depopulation of the electronic states that carry the spins associated with the 4f orbitals of Eu are all contributing factors in the surface-induced change of the magnetic properties of EuO$_{1-x}$.

0-level Vacuum Packaging RT Process for MEMS Resonators

A new Room Temperature (RT) 0-level vacuum package is demonstrated in this work, using amorphous silicon (aSi) as sacrificial layer and SiO2 as structural layer. The process is compatible with most of MEMS resonators and Resonant Suspended-Gate MOSFET [1] fabrication processes. This paper presents a study on the influence of releasing hole dimensions on the releasing time and hole clogging. It discusses mass production compatibility in terms of packaging stress during back-end plastic injection process. The packaging is done at room temperature making it fully compatible with IC-processed wafers and avoiding any subsequent degradation of the active devices.

Low Energy Singlets in the Excitation Spectrum of the Spin Tetrahedra System Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2

Low energy Raman scattering of the s=1/2 spin tetrahedra system Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2 is dominated by an excitation at 18 cm^{-1} corresponding to an energy E_S=0.6Δ, with Δthe spin gap of the compound. For elevated temperatures this mode shows a soft mode-like decrease in energy pointing to an instability of the system. The isostructural reference system Cu_2Te_2O_5Cl_2 with a presumably larger inter-tetrahedra coupling does not show such a low energy mode. Instead its excitation spectrum and thermodynamic properties are compatible with long range Neel-ordering. We discuss the observed effects in the context of quantum fluctuations and competing ground states.

Structural Phase Transition in the 2D Spin Dimer Compound SrCu2(BO3)2

A displacive, 2nd order structural phase transition at Ts=395 K from space group I`4 2 m below Ts to I 4/m c m above Ts has been discovered in the two-dimensional spin dimer compound SrCu2(BO3)2. The temperature evolution of the structure in both phases has been studied by X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering, supplemented by differential scanning calorimetry and SQUID magnetometry. The implications of this transition and of the observed phonon anomalies in Raman scattering for spin-phonon and interlayer coupling in this quantum spin system will be discussed.
