Dynamical correlations and nonequilibrium sum rules in photodoped Hubbard ladders

Using matrix product state techniques we study the nonequilibrium dynamical response of the half-filled Hubbard ladder when subject to an optical pump. Optical pumping offers a way of producing and manipulating new strongly correlated phenomena by suppressing existing magnetic correlations. The ladder allows the effects of pump directionality to be investigated, and compared to a single chain it has strong spin-charge coupling and a fully gapped excitation spectrum, promising different nonequilibrium physics. We compute time-dependent correlations, including the nonequilibrium dynamical structure factors for spin and charge. By deriving a combined spin-charge sum rule that applies both in and out-of-equilibrium, we show that spectral weight is pumped directly from the antiferromagnetic spin response into a low energy $ω\sim 0$ charge response below the Mott gap. The transfer of weight is pump direction dependent: pumping directed along the legs disrupts magnetic correlations more than pumping in the rung direction, even if the post pump energy density is similar. The charge correlation length is dramatically enhanced by the pump, whilst the spin correlations are most strongly suppressed at nearest and next-nearest neighbour spacings. After the pump the system is in a nonthermal correlated metallic state, with gapless charge excitations and approximately equal spin and charge correlation lengths, emphasising the importance of treating these degrees of freedom on an equal footing in nonequilibrium systems.

Laser-Induced Transient Magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 Throughout the Brillouin Zone

Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic x-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets, and that they persist for several picoseconds which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. Our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred to achieve rapid manipulation of magnetism.

Quantum quenches in two spatial dimensions using chain array matrix product states

We describe a method for simulating the real time evolution of extended quantum systems in two dimensions. The method combines the benefits of integrability and matrix product states in one dimension to avoid several issues that hinder other applications of tensor based methods in 2D. In particular it can be extended to infinitely long cylinders. As an example application we present results for quantum quenches in the 2D quantum (2+1 dimensional) Ising model. In quenches that cross a phase boundary we find that the return probability shows non-analyticities in time.

Itinerant effects and enhanced magnetic interactions in Bi-based multilayer cuprates

The cuprate high temperature superconductors exhibit a pronounced trend in which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm c}$, increases with the number of CuO$_2$ planes, $n$, in the crystal structure. We compare the magnetic excitation spectrum of Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi-2201) and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10 + δ}$ (Bi-2223), with $n=1$ and $n=3$ respectively, using Cu $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Near the anti-nodal zone boundary we find the paramagnon energy in Bi-2223 is substantially higher than that in Bi-2201, indicating that multilayer cuprates host stronger effective magnetic exchange interactions, providing a possible explanation for the $T_{\rm c}$ vs.\ $n$ scaling. In contrast, the nodal direction exhibits very strongly damped, almost non-dispersive excitations. We argue that this implies that the magnetism in the doped cuprates is partially itinerant in nature.

Understanding the entanglement entropy and spectra of 2D quantum systems through arrays of coupled 1D chains

We describe an algorithm for studying the entanglement entropy and spectrum of 2D systems, as a coupled array of $N$ one dimensional chains in their continuum limit. Using the algorithm to study the quantum Ising model in 2D, (both in its disordered phase and near criticality) we confirm the existence of an area law for the entanglement entropy and show that near criticality there is an additive piece scaling as $c_{eff}\log (N)/6$ with $c_{eff} \approx 1$. \textcolor{black}{Studying the entanglement spectrum, we show that entanglement gap scaling can be used to detect the critical point of the 2D model. When short range (area law) entanglement dominates we find (numerically and perturbatively) that this spectrum reflects the energy spectrum of a single quantum Ising chain.

High-energy magnetic excitations in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$: Towards a unified description of the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom in the cuprates

We investigate the high-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Broad, dispersive magnetic excitations are observed, with a zone boundary energy of $\sim$300 meV and a weak dependence on doping. These excitations are strikingly similar to the bosons proposed to explain the high-energy `kink' observed in photoemission. A calculation of the spin-response based on the ARPES-derived electronic structure and YRZ-quasi-particles reproduces the key features of the observed magnetic dispersions with no adjustable parameters. These results show that it is possible to reconcile the magnetic and electronic properties of the cuprates within a unified framework.

Magnetic Response in the Underdoped Cuprates

We examine the dynamical magnetic response of the underdoped cuprates by employing a phenomenological theory of a doped resonant valence bond state where the Fermi surface is truncated into four pockets. This theory predicts a resonant spin response which with increasing energy (0 to 100meV) appears as an hourglass. The very low energy spin response is found at (pi,pi +- delta) and (pi +- delta,pi) and is determined by scattering from the pockets' frontside to the tips of opposite pockets where a van Hove singularity resides. At energies beyond 100 meV, strong scattering is seen from (pi,0) to (pi,pi). This theory thus provides a semi-quantitative description of the spin response seen in both INS and RIXS experiments at all relevant energy scales.

The phase diagram of 2D polar condensates in a magnetic field

Spin one condensates in the polar (antiferromagnetic) phase in two dimensions are shown to undergo a transition of the Ising type, in addition to the expected Kosterlitz--Thouless (KT) transition of half vortices, due to the quadratic Zeeman effect. We establish the phase diagram in terms of temperature and the strength of the Zeeman effect using Monte Carlo simulations. When the Zeeman effect is sufficiently strong the Ising and KT transitions merge. For very strong Zeeman field the remaining transition is of the familiar integer KT type.

Non-Fermi liquid fixed point for an imbalanced gas of fermions in $1+ε$ dimensions

We consider a gas of two species of fermions with population imbalance. Using the renormalization group in $d=1+ε$ dimensions, we show that for spinless fermions and $ε> 0$ a fixed point appears at finite attractive coupling where the quasiparticle residue vanishes, and identify this with the transition to Larkin--Ovchinnikov--Fulde--Ferrell order (inhomogeneous superconductivity). When the two species of fermions also carry spin degrees of freedom we find a fixed point indicating a transition to spin density wave order.

On thermal fluctuations in quantum magnets

The effect of thermal fluctuations on the dynamics of a gapped quantum magnet is studied using inelastic neutron scattering on copper nitrate, a model material for the one-dimensional (1D) bond alternating Heisenberg chain, combined with theoretical and numerical analysis. We observe and interpret the thermally induced central peak due to intraband scattering as well as the thermal development of an asymmetric continuum of scattering. We relate this asymmetric line broadening to hard core constraints and quasi-particle interactions. Our findings are a counter example to recent assertions of universality of line broadening in 1D systems and are to be considered as a new paradigm of behaviour, applicable to a broad range of quantum systems.

Finite Temperature Dynamical Structure Factor of Alternating Heisenberg Chains

We develop a low-temperature expansion for the finite temperature dynamical structure factor of the spin half Heisenberg chain with alternating nearest neighbour exchange in the limit of strong alternation of the exchange constants. We determine both the broadening of the low lying triplet lines and the contribution of the thermally activated intraband scattering.

Finite Temperature Dynamical Structure Factor of the Heisenberg-Ising Chain

We consider the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain in the regime of large Ising-like anisotropy $Δ$. By a combination of duality and Jordan-Wigner transformations we derive a mapping to weakly interacting spinless fermions, which represent domain walls between the two degenerate ground states. We develop a perturbative expansion in $1Δ$ for the transverse dynamical spin structure factor at finite temperatures and in an applied transverse magnetic field. We present a unified description for both the low-energy temperature-activated response and the temperature evolution of the T=0 two-spinon continuum. We find that the two-spinon continuum narrows in energy with increasing temperature. At the same time spectral weight is transferred from the two-spinon continuum to the low energy intraband scattering continuum, which is strongly peaked around the position of the (single) spinon dispersion (`Villain mode').
