Final State Interactions and epsilon'/epsilon: A Critical Look

We critically analyze recent attempts to include final state interaction (FSI) effects in the calculation of the CP violating ratio epsilon'/epsilon. In particular the approach of using the Muskhelishvili-Omnes equation for the decay amplitudes is examined. We find that the values of the dispersive correction factors are very sensitive to initial conditions which are, at present, out of control, and demonstrate that the claimed large enhancement of epsilon'/epsilon through FSI is questionable. We propose, instead, a different implementation of this approach which may be useful to lattice determinations of weak amplitudes.

Electroweak Penguin Contributions to Non-Leptonic Delta F = 1 Decays at NNLO

We calculate the O(alpha_s) corrections to the Z^0-penguin and electroweak box diagrams relevant for non-leptonic Delta F = 1 decays with F = S, B. This calculation provides the complete O(alpha_w alpha_s) and O(alpha_w alpha_s sin^2 theta_w m_t^2) corrections (alpha_w = alpha/sin^2 theta_w) to the Wilson coefficients of the electroweak penguin four quark operators relevant for non-leptonic K- and B-decays. We argue that this is the dominant part of the next-next-to-leading (NNLO) contributions to these coefficients. Our results allow to reduce considerably the uncertainty due to the definition of the top quark mass present in the existing NLO calculations of non-leptonic decays. The NNLO corrections to the coefficient of the color singlet (V-A)x(V-A) electroweak penguin operator Q_9 relevant for B-decays are generally moderate, amount to a few percent for the choice m_t(mu_t = m_t) and depend only weakly on the renormalization scheme. Larger NNLO corrections with substantial scheme dependence are found for the coefficients of the remaining electroweak penguin operators Q_7, Q_8 and Q_10. In particular, the strong scheme dependence of the NNLO corrections to C_8 allows to reduce considerably the scheme dependence of C_8 (Q_8)_2 relevant for the ratio epsilon'/epsilon.

Connections between epsilon'/epsilon and Rare Kaon Decays in Supersymmetry

We analyze the rare kaon decays $K_L \to π^0 ν\bar ν$, $K^+ \to π^+ ν\bar ν$, $K_L \to π^0 e^+ e^-$ and $K_L \to μ^+ μ^-$ in conjunction with the CP violating ratio $ε'/ε$ in a general class of supersymmetric models in which $Z$- and magnetic-penguin contributions can be substantially larger than in the Standard Model. We point out that radiative effects relate the double left-right mass insertion to the single left-left one, and that the phenomenological constraints on the latter reflect into a stringent bound on the supersymmetric contribution to the $Z$ penguin. Using this bound, and those coming from recent data on $ε'/ε$ we find ${\rm BR}(K_L \to π^0 ν\bar ν)\lsim 1.2\cdot 10^{-10}$, ${\rm BR}(K^+ \to π^+ ν\bar ν)\lsim 1.7\cdot 10^{-10}$, ${\rm BR}(K_L \to π^0 e^+ e^-)_{\rm dir}\lsim 2.0\cdot 10^{-11}$, assuming the usual determination of the CKM parameters and neglecting the possibility of cancellations among different supersymmetric effects in $ε'/ε$. Larger values are possible, in principle, but rather unlikely. We stress the importance of a measurement of these three branching ratios, together with improved data and improved theory of $ε'/ε$, in order to shed light on the realization of various supersymmetric scenarios. We reemphasize that the most natural enhancement of $ε'/ε$, within supersymmetric models, comes from chromomagnetic penguins and show that in this case sizable enhancements of $BR(K_L \to π^0 e^+ e^-)_{\rm dir}$ can also be expected.

Standard Model Confronting New Results for epsilon'/epsilon

We analyze the CP violating ratio \epe=epsilon'/epsilon in the Standard Model in view of the new KTeV results. We review the present status of the most important non-perturbative parameters B_6, B_8, B_K and of the strange quark mass m_s. We also briefly discuss the issues of final state interactions and renormalization scheme dependence. Updating the values of the CKM parameters, of m_t and Lambda (MSbar) and using Gaussian errors for the experimental input and flat distributions for the theoretical parameters we find \epe substantially below the NA31 and KTeV data: \epe= (7.7^{+6.0}_{-3.5}) 10^{-4} and \epe= (5.2^{+4.6}_{-2.7}) 10^{-4} in the NDR and HV renormalization schemes respectively. A simple scanning of all input parameters gives on the other hand 1.05 10^{-4} < \epe < 28.8 10^{-4} and 0.26 10^{-4} < \epe < 22.0 10^{-4} respectively. Analyzing the dependence on various parameters we find that only for extreme values of B_6, B_8 and m_s and suitable values of CKM parameters and Lambda(MSbar), the ratio \epe can be made consistent with data. We analyze the impact of these data on the lower bounds for Im(V_{td}V_{ts}^*), Br(K_L to pi^0 nu barnu), Br(K_L to pi^0e^+e^-)_{dir} and on tan(beta) in the Two Higgs Doublet Model II.

Generalized Factorization in Non-leptonic Two-Body B-Decays: a Critical Look

We reanalyze critically the generalized factorization hypothesis in non-leptonic two-body B-decays discussed recently by several authors. In particular we address the determination of the factorization scale $μ_f$ and of the non-perturbative parameters $ξ^{NF}_1 (m_b)$ and $ξ^{NF}_2 (m_b)$ which are supposed to measure non-factorizable contributions to hadronic matrix elements with $ξ^{NF}_i (μ_f) = 0$. We emphasize that both $μ_f$ and $ξ^{NF}_i (m_b)$ are renormalization scheme dependent and we demonstrate analytically and numerically that for any chosen scale $μ_f=\ord(m_b)$ it is possible to find a renormalization scheme for which $ξ^{NF}_1 (μ_f) = ξ^{NF}_2 (μ_f)=0$. The existing data indicate that such "factorization schemes" differ from the commonly used schemes NDR and HV. Similarly we point out that the recent extractions of the effective number of colours $N^{eff}$ from two-body non-leptonic B-decays while $μ$ and renormalization scheme independent suffer from gauge dependences and infrared dependences.

$K \to πν\bar ν$: A Model Independent Analysis and Supersymmetry

We present a model independent analysis of new-physics contributions to the decays K^+ \to π^+ ν\bar νand K_L \to π^0 ν\bar ν. We parameterize the effects of new physics in these decays by two parameters: r_K and θ_K, with r_K=1 and θ_K=0 in the Standard Model (SM). We show how these parameters can be extracted from future data. This analysis offers some insight in a possible violation of a "golden relation" between K \to πν\bar νdecays and the CP asymmetry in B \to ψK_S in the SM pointed out some time ago. We illustrate these ideas by considering a general class of supersymmetric models. We find that in the "constrained" MSSM, in which θ_K=0, the measurements of Br(K^+ \to π^+ ν\bar ν) and Br(K_L \to π^0 ν\bar ν) directly determine the angle β. Moreover, the "golden relation" remains unaffected. On the other hand, in general SUSY models with unbroken R-parity the present experimental constraints still allow for substantial deviations from r_K=1 and θ_K=0. Typically 0.5 < r_K < 1.3 and -25^0 < θ_K < 25^0. Consequently, in these models the violation of the "golden relation" is possible and values for Br(K^+ \to π^+ ν\bar ν) and Br(K_L \to π^0 ν\bar ν) departing from the SM expectations by factors 2-3 cannot be excluded. Our conclusions differ in certain aspects from the ones reached in previous analyses. In particular, we stress the possible importance of left-right flavour-violating mass insertions that were not considered before.

Next-To-Leading-Order Matching for the Magnetic Photon-Penguin Operator in the $B \to X_s γ$ Decay

The initial condition at the matching scale $μ_W = O(M_W)$ for the Wilson coefficient of the magnetic photon-penguin operator in the decay $B\to X_s γ$ is calculated in the next-to-leading-order approximation. The technical details of the necessary two-loop calculation in the full theory are described and the matching with the corresponding result in the effective theory is discussed in detail. Our outcome for the initial condition confirms the final results of Adel and Yao and Greub and Hurth. We show that --- contrary to the claims in the second of these papers --- the matching procedure can be properly performed for infrared divergent amplitudes, i.e. independently of contributions from gluon bremsstrahlung.

A 1996 Analysis of the CP Violating Ratio epsilon'/epsilon

We update our 1993 analysis of the CP violating ratio $\epe$ in view of the changes in several input parameters, in particular the improved value of the top quark mass. We also investigate the strange quark mass $m_s$ dependence of $\epe$ in view of rather low values found in the most recent lattice calculations. A simple scanning of the input parameters within one standard deviation gives the ranges: $-1.2 \cdot 10^{-4} \le \epe \le 16.0 \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $0 \le \epe \le 43.0 \cdot 10^{-4}$ for $\ms(\mc)=150\pm20~ \mev$ and $\ms(\mc)=100\pm20~ \mev$ respectively. If the experimentally measured numbers and the theoretical input parameters are used with Gaussian errors, we find $\epe= ( 3.6\pm 3.4) \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $\epe= ( 10.4\pm 8.3) \cdot 10^{-4}$ respectively. We also give results for ${\rm Im} V_{ts}^*V_{td}$. Analyzing the dependence of $\epe$ on various parameters we find that only for $\ms(\mc)\le 100\,\mev$ and a conspiration of other input parameters, values for $\epe$ as large as $(2-4) \cdot 10^{-3}$ and consistent with the NA31 result can be obtained.

Effective Hamiltonian for $B \ra X_s e^+ e^-$ Beyond Leading Logarithms in the NDR and HV Schemes

We calculate the next-to-leading QCD corrections to the effective Hamiltonian for \Bsee in the NDR and HV schemes. We give for the first time analytic expressions for the Wilson Coefficient of the operator $Q_9 = (\bar s b)_{V-A}(\bar e e)_V$ in the NDR and HV schemes. Calculating the relevant matrix elements of local operators in the spectator model we demonstrate the scheme independence of the resulting short distance contribution to the physical amplitude. Keeping consistently only leading and next-to-leading terms, we find an analytic formula for the differential dilepton invariant mass distribution in the spectator model. Numerical analysis of the $\mt$, $\Lms$ and $μ\approx {\cal O}(\mb)$ dependences of this formula is presented. We compare our results with those given in the literature.

QCD Factors a1 and a2 Beyond Leading Logarithms Versus Factorization in Non-Leptonic Heavy Meson Decays

We calculate the QCD factors $a_1$ and $a_2$, entering the tests of factorization in non-leptonic heavy meson decays, beyond the leading logarithmic approximation in three renormalization schemes (NDR, HV, DRED). We investigate their $μ$--dependence and the renormalization scheme dependence. We point out that $a_1$ for B-decays depends very weakly on $\Lms$, $μ$ and the choice of the renormalization scheme. For $\Lms^{(5)}=225\pm85~MeV$ and $4~GeV\leqμ\leq 8~GeV$ we find $a_1=1.01\pm0.02$ in accordance with phenomenology. The $\Lms$, $μ$ and scheme dependences of $a_2$ are on the other hand sizable. Interestingly, for the NDR scheme we find $a_2^{NDR}=0.20\pm0.05$, in the ball park of recent phenomenological results and substantially larger than leading order estimates. However $a_2^{HV}=0.16\pm0.05$ and $a_2^{DRED}=0.15\pm0.05$. Implications of these findings for the tests of factorization in B-decays and D-decays are critically discussed.

Towards Precise Determinations of the CKM Matrix without Hadronic Uncertainties

We illustrate how the measurements of the CP asymmetries in $B^0_{d,s}$-decays together with a measurement of $Br(K_L\to π^\circν\barν)$ or $Br(K^+\to π^+ν\barν)$ and the known value of $\mid V_{us}\mid $ can determine all elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix essentially without any hadronic uncertainties. An analysis using the ratio $x_d/x_s$ of $B_d-\bar B_d$ to $B_s-\bar B_s$ mixings is also presented.

Limitations in Measuring the Angle $β$ by Using $SU(3)$ Relations for $B$-Meson Decay-Amplitudes

Flavour $SU(3)$ symmetry of strong interactions and certain dynamical assumptions have been used in a series of recent publications to extract weak CKM phases from $B$-decays into $\{ππ,πK, K\bar K\}$ final states. We point out that irrespectively of $SU(3)$-breaking effects the presence of QCD-penguin contributions with internal $u$- and $c$-quarks precludes a clean determination of the angle $β$ in the unitarity triangle by using the branching ratios only. This difficulty can be overcome by measuring in addition the ratio $x_d/x_s$ of $B^0_d-\bar B^0_d$ to $B^0_s-\bar B^0_s$ mixings. The measurement of the angle $γ$ is unaffected by these new contributions. Some specific uncertainties related to $SU(3)$-breaking effects and electroweak penguin contributions are briefly discussed.

Parity Violating Longitudinal Muon Polarization in $K^+\toπ^+μ^+μ^-$ Beyond Leading Logarithms

We generalize the existing analyses of the parity violating muon polarization asymmetry $Δ_{LR}$ in $K^+\toπ^+μ^+μ^-$ beyond the leading logarithmic approximation. The inclusion of next--to--leading QCD corrections reduces the residual dependence on the renormalization scales, which is quite pronounced in the leading order. This leads to a considerably improved accuracy in the perturbative calculation of the short distance dominated quantity $Δ_{LR}$. Accordingly this will also allow to obtain better constraints on the Wolfenstein parameter $\varrho$ from future measurements of $Δ_{LR}$. For $-0.25\leq \varrho \leq 0.25$, $V_{cb}=0.040\pm 0.004$ and $m_t=(170\pm 20)GeV$ we find $3.0\cdot 10^{-3}\leq |Δ_{LR}|\leq 9.6\cdot 10^{-3}$.

CP Violation: Present and Future

We review the present status of CP violation in the standard model. Subsequently we make an excursion in the future in order to see what we could expect in this field in this and the next decade. We present various strategies for the determination of the CKM parameters and divide the decays into four classes with respect to theoretical uncertainties. We emphasize that the definitive tests of the Kobayashi-Maskawa picture of CP violation will come through a {\it simultaneous} study of CP asymmetries in $B_{d,s}^o$ decays, the rare decays $K^+ \to π^+ν\barν$ and $K_L \to π^oν\barν$, and $x_d/x_s$. We illustrate how the measurements of the CP asymmetries in $B^0_{d,s}$-decays together with a measurement of $Br(K_L\to π^\circν\barν)$ or $Br(\kpnn)$ and the known value of $\mid V_{us}\mid $ can determine {\it all} elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix essentially without any hadronic uncertainties.

Precise Determinations of the CKM Matrix from CP-Asymmetries in B-Decays and K_L --> π^0 ν\barν

We point out that the measurements of the CP asymmetries in neutral B-decays together with a measurement of $Br(K_L\to π^\circν\barν)$ and the known value of $\mid V_{us}\mid $ can determine {\it all} elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix without essentially any hadronic uncertainties. In particular the strong dependence of $Br(K_L\to π^\circν\barν)$ on $\mid V_{cb}\mid$ ($\mid V_{cb}\mid^4$) can be used to determine this element precisely. Consequently $\mid V_{ub}\mid$, $\mid V_{td}\mid$ and $\mid V_{ts} \mid $ can also be determined. We derive a set of formulae which facilitate this study and we present a numerical analysis of several future scenarios. Accurate determinations of all parameters are expected from the B-factories and the Main Injector era at Fermilab including KAMI. An impressive accuracy should be reached in the LHC era. An analysis using $Br(\kpnn)$ instead of $Br(\klpnn)$ shows that although the determination of $\mid V_{cb}\mid$ and $\mid V_{td}\mid$ this way is less accurate, still useful results for these elements can be obtained.

Waiting for the Top Quark Mass, K^+ --> π^+ ν\barν, B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0 Mixing and CP Asymmetries in B-Decays

Anticipating improved determinations of m_t, |V_ub/V_cb|, B_K and F_B \sqrt{B_B} in the next five years we make an excursion in the future in order to find a possible picture of the unitarity triangle, of quark mixing and of CP-violation around the year 2000. We then analyse what impact on this picture will have the measurements of four possibly cleanest quantities: BR(K^+ --> π^+ ν\barν), x_d/x_s, sin(2α) and \sin(2β). Our analysis shows very clearly that there is an exciting time ahead of us. In the course of our investigations we extend the analysis of the unitarity triangle beyond the leading order in λand we derive several useful analytic formulae for quantities of interest.

Direct CP Violation in K_L --> π^0 e^+e^- Beyond Leading Logarithms

We analyze the direct CP violation in the rare decay K_L --> Pi^0 e+e- with QCD effects taken into account consistently in the next-to-leading order. We calculate the two-loop mixing between the four-quark ΔS=1 operators and the operator Q_7V = (sd)_(V-A)(ee)_V in the NDR and HV renormalization schemes. Using the known two-loop anomalous dimension matrix of the four-quark operators, we find that the coefficient C_7V(μ) depends only very weakly on μ, renormalization scheme and Λ_MSbar. The next-to-leading QCD corrections enhance the direct CP violating contribution over its leading order estimate so that it remains dominant in spite of the recent decrease of |V_ub/V_cb| and |V_cb|. We expect typically BR(K_L --> π^0 e^+ e^-)_dir ~ 6*10^(-12), although values as high as 10^(-11) are not yet excluded.

Theoretical Uncertainties and Phenomenological Aspects of $B \rightarrow X_s γ$ Decay

We analyze uncertainties in the theoretical prediction for the inclusive branching ratio $BR[B \rightarrow X_s γ]$. We find that the dominant uncertainty in the leading order expression comes from its $μ$-dependence. We discuss a next-to-leading order calculation of $B \rightarrow X_s γ$ in general terms and check to what extent the $μ$-dependence can be reduced in such a calculation. We present constraints on the Standard and Two-Higgs-Doublet Model parameters coming from the measurement of $b \rightarrow s γ$ decay. The current theoretical uncertainties do not allow one to definitively restrict the Standard Model parameters much beyond the limits coming from other experiments. The bounds on the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model remain very strong, though significantly weaker than the ones present in the recent literature. In the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model case, the $b \rightarrow s γ$, $Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}$ and $b \rightarrow c τ\barν_τ$ processes are enough to give the most restrictive bounds in the $M_{H^{\pm}}-tan β$ plane.
