On the Josephson Coupling between a disk of one superconductor and a surrounding superconducting film of a different symmetry

A cylindrical Josephson junction with a spatially dependent Josephson coupling which averages to zero is studied in order to model the physics of a disk of d-wave superconductor embedded in a superconducting film of a different symmetry. It is found that the system always introduces Josepshon vortices in order to gain energy at the junction. The critical current is calculated. It is argued that a recent experiment claimed to provide evidence for s-wave superconductivity in $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ may also be consistent with d-wave superconductivity. On the theory of the spin gap in bilayer cuprates

We formulate and solve a model of two planes of antiferromagnetically correlated electrons coupled together by a weak antiferromagnetic interaction of strength $λ$. We show that in-plane antiferromagnetic correlations dramatically enhance the pairing effect of the interplane interaction. For the case where the in-plane correlation length $κ^{-1} \sim T^{-1/2}$, we find that the interaction $λ$ leads to spin pairing at a temperature $T^{*} \sim λ$, much higher than the usual BCS result $exp(-J/λ)$. We suggest that this is a possible explanation of the spin gap effects observed below $T^{*} \sim 150K$ in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}$.

Spin Gaps and Bilayer Coupling in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$

We investigate the relevance to the physics of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{\rm 6+x}$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ of the quantum critical point which occurs in a model of two antiferromagnetically coupled planes of antiferromagnetically correlated spins. We use a Schwinger boson mean field theory and a scaling analysis to obtain the phase diagram of the model and the temperature and frequency dependence of various susceptibilities and relaxation rates. We distinguish between a low $ω,T$ coupled-planes regime in which the optic spin excitations are frozen out and a high $ω,T$ decoupled-planes regime in which the two planes fluctuate independently. In the coupled-planes regime the yttrium nuclear relaxation rate at low temperatures is larger relative to the copper and oxygen rates than would be naively expected in a model of uncorrelated planes. Available data suggest that in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ the crossover from the coupled to the decoupled planes regime occurs at $T 700K$ or $T \sim 200K$. The predicted correlation length is of order 6 lattice constants at $T=200K$. Experimental data related to the antiferromagnetic susceptibility of YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ may be made consistent with the theory, but available data for the uniform susceptibility are inconsistent with the theory.

Scaling theory of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in one dimension

We use the Bethe ansatz equations to calculate the charge stiffness $D_{\rm c} = (L/2) d^2 E_0/dΦ_{\rm c}^2|_{Φ_{\rm c}=0}$ of the one-dimensional repulsive-interaction Hubbard model for electron densities close to the Mott insulating value of one electron per site ($n=1$), where $E_0$ is the ground state energy, $L$ is the circumference of the system (assumed to have periodic boundary conditions), and $(\hbar c/e)Φ_{\rm c}$ is the magnetic flux enclosed. We obtain an exact result for the asymptotic form of $D_{\rm c}(L)$ as $L\to \infty$ at $n=1$, which defines and yields an analytic expression for the correlation length $ξ$ in the Mott insulating phase of the model as a function of the on-site repulsion $U$. In the vicinity of the zero temperature critical point U=0, $n=1$, we show that the charge stiffness has the hyperscaling form $D_{\rm c}(n,L,U)=Y_+(ξδ, ξ/L)$, where $δ=|1-n|$ and $Y_+$ is a universal scaling function which we calculate. The physical significance of $ξ$ in the metallic phase of the model is that it defines the characteristic size of the charge-carrying solitons, or {\em holons}. We construct an explicit mapping for arbitrary $U$ and $ξδ\ll 1$ of the holons onto weakly interacting spinless fermions, and use this mapping to obtain an asymptotically exact expression for the low temperature thermopower near the metal-insulator transition, which is a generalization to arbitrary $U$ of a result previously obtained using a weak- coupling approximation, and implies hole-like transport for $0<1-n\llξ^{-1}$.

Spin Gaps and Spin Dynamics in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and YBa_2Cu_3O7_δ

A magnetic susceptibility which decreases with decreasing temperature is observed in all $CuO_2$ based superconductors with less than optimal doping. We propose that in $La_{2-x} Sr_x CuO_4$ this is due to antiferromagnetic ordering which is prevented by the low spatial dimensionality while in $YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.6}$ it is due to the interplay between antiferromagnetic fluctuations within a plane and singlet pairing of electrons between nearest neighbor planes.
