Electron-Photon Vertex and Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Reduced QED: An Advanced Study of Gauge Invariance

We study the effect of a refined electron-photon vertex on the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in reduced quantum electrodynamics. We construct an educated {\em ansatz} for this vertex which satisfies the required discrete symmetries under parity, time reversal and charge conjugation operations. Furthermore, it reproduces its asymptotic perturbative limit in the weak coupling regime and ensures the massless electron propagator is multiplicatively renormalizable in its leading logarithmic expansion. Employing this vertex {\em ansatz}, we solve the gap equation to compute dynamically generated electron mass whose dependence on the electromagnetic coupling is found to satisfy Miransky scaling law. We also investigate the gauge dependence of this dynamical mass as well as that of the critical coupling above which chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. As a litmus test of our vertex construction, both these quantities are rendered virtually gauge independent within a certain interval of values considered for the covariant gauge parameter.

Half-integer anomalous currents in 2D materials from a QFT viewpoint

Charge carriers in Dirac/Weyl semi-metals exhibit a relativistic-like behavior. In this work we propose a novel type of intrinsic half-integer Quantum Hall effect in 2D materials, thereby also offering a topological protection mechanism for the current. Its existence is rooted in the 2D parity anomaly, without any need for a perpendicular magnetic field. We conjecture that it may occur in disturbed honeycomb lattices where both spin degeneracy and time reversal symmetry are broken. These configurations harbor two distinct gap-opening mechanisms that, when occurring simultaneously, drive slightly different gaps in each valley, causing a net anomalous conductivity when the chemical potential is tuned to be between the distinct gaps. Some examples of promising material setups that fulfill the prerequisites of our proposal are also listed to motivate looking for the effect at the numerical and experimental level.

On the exact quantum scale invariance of three-dimensional reduced QED theories

An effective quantum field theory description of graphene in the ultra-relativistic regime is given by reduced QED aka. pseudo QED aka. mixed-dimensional QED. It has been speculated in the literature that reduced QED constitutes an example of a specific class of hard-to-find theories: an interacting CFT in more than two dimensions. This speculation was based on two-loop perturbation theory. Here, we give a proof of this feature, namely the exact vanishing of the b-function, thereby showing that reduced QED can effectively be considered as an interacting (boundary) CFT, underpinning recent work in this area. The argument, valid for both two- and four-component spinors, also naturally extends to an exactly marginal deformation of reduced QED, thence resulting in a non-supersymmetric conformal manifold. The latter corresponds to boundary layer fermions between two different dielectric half-spaces.

Comments on the Chern-Simons photon term in the QED description of graphene

We revisit the Coleman-Hill theorem in the context of reduced planar QED. Using the global U(1) Ward identity for this non-local but still gauge invariant theory, we can confirm that the topological piece of the photon self-energy at zero momentum does not receive further quantum corrections apart from the potential one-loop contribution, even when considering the Lorentz non-invariant case due to the Fermi velocity $v_F<c$. This is of relevance to probe possible time parity odd dynamics in a planar sheet of graphene which has an effective description in terms of $(2+1)$-dimensional planar reduced QED.

The pseudo chiral magnetic effect in QED3

Chiral magnetic effect (CME) has been suggested to take place during peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions. However, signals of its realization are not yet independent of ambiguities and thus probing the non-trivial topological vacua of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is still an open issue. Weyl materials, particularly graphene, on the other hand, are effectively described at low energies by the degrees of freedom of quantum electrodynamics in two spatial dimensions, QED3. This theory shares with QCD some interesting features, like confinement and chiral symmetry breaking and also possesses a non-trivial vacuum structure. In this regard, an analog of the CME is proposed to take place in graphene under the influence of an in-plane magnetic field in which the pseudo-spin or flavor label of charge carriers is participant of the effect, rather than the actual spin. In this contribution, we review the parallelisms and differences between the CME and the so-called pseudo chiral magnetic effect, PCME.

Phase diagram of hot QCD in an external magnetic field: possible splitting of deconfinement and chiral transitions

The structure of the phase diagram for strong interactions becomes richer in the presence of a magnetic background, which enters as a new control parameter for the thermodynamics. Motivated by the relevance of this physical setting for current and future high-energy heavy ion collision experiments and for the cosmological QCD transitions, we use the linear sigma model coupled to quarks and to Polyakov loops as an effective theory to investigate how the chiral and the deconfining transitions are affected, and present a general picture for the temperature--magnetic field phase diagram. We compute and discuss each contribution to the effective potential for the approximate order parameters, and uncover new phenomena such as the paramagnetically-induced breaking of global Z_3 symmetry, and possible splitting of deconfinement and chiral transitions in a strong magnetic field.

Langevin dynamics of the pure SU(2) deconfining transition

We investigate the dissipative real-time evolution of the order parameter for the deconfining transition in the pure SU(2) gauge theory. The approach to equilibrium after a quench to temperatures well above the critical one is described by a Langevin equation. To fix completely the markovian Langevin dynamics we choose the dissipation coefficient, that is a function of the temperature, guided by preliminary Monte Carlo simulations for various temperatures. Assuming a relationship between Monte Carlo time and real time, we estimate the delay in thermalization brought about by dissipation and noise.

Dissipation and memory effects in pure glue deconfinement

We investigate the effects of dissipation in the deconfining transition for a pure SU(2) gauge theory. Using an effective model for the order parameter, we study its Langevin evolution numerically, and compare results from local additive noise dynamics to those obtained considering an exponential non-local kernel for early times.
