Applied Supersymmetry

Supersymmetry is one of the most important and indispensable ingredients of modern theoretical physics. However, the absence, at least at the time of publishing this review, of experimental verification of supersymmetry in elementary particle/high-energy physics casts doubt on the viability of this concept at the energies achievable at the LHC. The more unexpected are either already experimentally verified or proposed for verification manifestations of supersymmetry at the level of low (condensed matter physics, quantum optics) and medium (nuclear physics) energies where standard quantum mechanics works. Using examples of various systems from completely different areas of physics, we discuss the isospectrality of quantum Hamiltonians, hidden and explicit supersymmetry, the advantages of the supersymmetric quantum mechanics approach and its role in quantum engineering.

Taking the Null-Hypersurface Limit in the Parikh-Wilczek Membrane Approach

We consider subtleties of the horizon (null-hypersurface) limit in the Parikh-Wilczek Membrane Approach to Black Holes. Specifically, we refine the correspondence between the projected Einstein equations of gravity with matter and the Raychaudhuri-Damour-Navier-Stokes (RDNS) equations of relativistic hydrodynamics. For a general configuration of gravity with matter we obtain additional terms in the hydrodynamic equations, which include very specific combinations of the contracted logarithmic derivatives of a parameter (the regularization function) determining the proximity of a stretched membrane to the black hole horizon. Nevertheless, direct computations of the new terms for exact (Schwarzschild and Kerr) black hole solutions prompt the standard form of the RDNS equations, due to the non-expanding horizon property of these solutions. Therefore, the reduction of the extended RDNS equations to their classical form may be viewed as an additional consistency condition in the exact black hole solutions hydrodynamics, and may serve as a non-trivial test for various viable approximations of spacetime metrics. We compare in detail the Parikh-Wilczek Membrane Approach with the Gourgoulhon-Jaramillo method of a null-hypersurface description, as well as give the link of the obtained results to our previous work on the Kerr black holes.

Studying KARMA (Kerr And Relativistic Matter Around)

We construct series of solutions for the Kerr-type rotating black hole with non-trivial matter in flat and (A)dS backgrounds. Symmetry arguments and singularity analysis in the proposed black hole models fix the free parameters of the solutions, and the study of popular energy conditions makes it possible to impose constraints on configuration and field content of external matter. The resulted geometry of spacetimes is featured by a special type singularity in the north and south pole directions, inducing the bipolar outflow of particles from black holes. As a step toward the construction of a non-stationary rotating black hole solution in the presence of matter, we explore the zero angular momentum limit of the constructed metrics. The use of the Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates allows us to find a generalization of the proposed construction to the Vaidya-type black hole. Finally, employing the Newman-Janis algorithm, we find the corresponding generalization of the Kerr-Vaidya black hole solution.

Non-stationary SQM/IST Correspondence and ${\cal CPT}/{\cal PT}$-invariant paired Hamiltonians on the line

We fill some of existed gaps in the correspondence between Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics and the Inverse Scattering Transform by extending the consideration to the case of paired stationary and non-stationary Hamiltonians. We formulate the corresponding to the case Goursat problem and explicitly construct the kernel of the non-local Inverse Scattering Transform, which solves it. As a result, we find the way of constructing non-hermitian Hamiltonians from the initially hermitian ones, that leads, in the case of real-valued spectra of both potentials, to pairing of ${\cal CPT/PT}$-invariant Hamiltonians. The relevance of our proposal to Quantum Optics and optical waveguides technology, as well as to non-linear dynamics and Black Hole Physics is briefly discussed.

Kerr Black Holes within the Membrane Paradigm

We consider the membrane viewpoint a là Parikh-Wilczek on the Kerr solution for a rotating black hole. Computing the stress-energy tensor of a close-to-the-horizon stretched membrane and comparing it to the stress-tensor of a viscous fluid, we recover transport coefficients in terms of the Kerr geometry. Viscosities of the dual fluid remain constant, while the rest of the transport coefficients become complex functions of radial and angle coordinates. We study the qualitative behavior of the pressure, expansion, and energy/momentum densities for two specific black holes: the slowly rotating black hole, with the angular momentum of one percent of the black hole mass squared, and the extremal Kerr black hole. For the Kerr solution in the Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, these transport coefficients generally have poles at different values of the radial coordinate in the range between the horizon and the Schwarzschild radius of the black hole, in dependence on the fixed angle direction. We briefly discuss our findings in the context of a relation between the Membrane Paradigm and the AdS/CFT correspondence, the KSS bound violation, the coordinate choice, and a non-stationary extension of the Kerr solution.

Hallmarks of tunneling dynamics with broken reflective symmetry

We study features of tunneling dynamics in an exactly-solvable model of N=4 supersymmetric quantum mechanics with a multi-well potential and with broken reflective symmetry. Quantum systems with a phenomenological potential of this type demonstrate the phenomenon of partial localization of under-barrier states, possibly resulting in the appearance of the so-called "resonant" tunneling, or the phenomenon of coherent tunneling destruction, referring to the complete localization. Taking the partial localization and the coherent tunneling destruction as basic examples, we indicate main advantages of using isospectral exactly-solvable Hamiltonians in studies quantum mechanical systems with two- and three-well potentials. They, in particular, are: having enough freedom of changing the potential shape in a wide range, that allows one to choose an exactly-solvable model close to characteristics of the phenomenological one; ability of changing the number of local minima and symmetry characteristics of the potential (symmetric or deformed) without changing the main part of the spectrum; engaging a smart basis of states, that dramatically decreases the dimensionality of matrices used in the diagonalization procedure of the corresponding spectral problem.

Quantum-gravitational trans-Planckian radiation by a rotating black hole

We recently studied the energy behavior of a quantum-corrected time-dependent black hole. The system analyzed was a quantum-corrected Kerr solution that settles down to a stationary configuration as the time dependence fades out. A trans-Planckian energy scaling in the vicinity of the event horizon resulted, and we proposed the trans-Planckian radiation to be the missing link in the glowing mechanism of active galactic nuclei. The main goal of the present work is to examine the scaling and structure of the radiation by analyzing the quantum momentum density. We again observe a trans-Planckian behavior. Furthermore, the momentum density displays structures that are indicative of a disk-like configuration near the equator and a collimated outflow of matter from the poles. The bipolar outflow (disk-like structure) should be an essential part of the underlying mechanism for jets (accretion disks) of active galactic nuclei.

Scattering on Quasi-Spherical Black-Holes: Features and Beyond

Recent developments in the gravitational waves interferometry require more pertinent theoretical models of gravitational waves generation and propagation. Untouched possible mechanisms of spin-2 spacetime perturbations production, we will consider their subsequent scattering on other black holes (BHs). Specifically, we consider a generalization of the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli equations for the case of distorted BHs (BHs surrounded with matter) in Minkowski and Anti-de Sitter spacetimes, the metric potential of which obeys the Liouville equation. We establish significant differences in scattering characteristics of waves of different spins and angular momenta, including the gravitational waves, caused by losing the spherical symmetry of their propagation background. In particular, we demonstrate the strong impact of the background geometry deformation on the grey-body factors, hence on the absorption cross-sections of scattering waves, and explore the issue of stability of the background geometry upon changing the deformation degree parameters.

The Stark effect in superfluid $^4$He with relative flows

We conducted series of experiments on observing a Stark-type effect in superfluid $^4$He in presence of relative laminar flows of the normal and superfluid components. It is designed a measurement cell which allows us to simultaneously create hydrodynamic flows in the liquid and to carry out high-frequency radio-measurements at external electric field. We used a dielectric disk resonator that made possible to cover a wide frequency range. In our experiments it was registered the spectrum of the dielectric disk resonator modes, as well as narrow lines of absorption of a microwave radiation in He II on its background and in different conditions. We discovered that having in the liquid helium a relative motion of the normal and superfluid fractions in the temperature range of 1.4$÷$2.17 K the narrow line of absorption/radiation is observed in the EM spectrum, the frequency of which - 180 GHz - corresponds to the roton minimum. This line splits in a constant electric field. Note that in a weak electric field the value of splitting depends linearly on the electric field strength, i.e. the linear Stark effect is detected. It is found that with the external electric field increasing both split lines are displaced towards more low frequencies side. The obtained data set could be described by an empirical formula, taking into account as the linear part of the Stark effect, as well as a quadratic addition, related to the polarization part. The data point out on having particles or excitations in the liquid helium with the dipole moment $\sim 10^{-4}$ D, that in four order less of the characteristic dipole moment of polar molecules. The comparison of our findings to values of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of elementary particles and nuclei is also performed. We sum up with brief discussion of extensions of the known theoretical models and possible mechanisms of the EDM production.

Quantum-gravitational trans-Planckian energy of a time-dependent black hole

We continue our recent endeavor in which a time-dependent black hole solution of a one-loop quantum-corrected Einstein-scalar system was obtained and its near-horizon behavior was analyzed. The energy analysis led to a trans-Planckian scaling behavior near the event horizon. In the present work the analysis is extended to a rotating black hole solution of an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar system with a Higgs potential. Although the analysis becomes much more complex compared to that of the previous, we observe the same basic features, including the quantum-gravitational trans-Planckian energy near the horizon.

Quantum-induced trans-Planckian energy near horizon

We study the loop effects on the geometry and boundary conditions of several black hole spacetimes one of which is time-dependent and analyze the energy measured by an infalling observer near their horizons. The finding in the previous works that the loop effects can be drastic is reinforced: they play an important role in the boundary conditions and non-perturbative geometry deformation. One of the channels through which the quantum gravitational effects enter is generation of the cosmological constant. The cosmological constant feeds the time-dependence of a solution. We obtain a trans-Planckian energy in the time-dependent case. The importance of time-dependence for the trans-Planckian energy and black hole information is discussed.

Unifying the PST and the auxiliary tensor field formulations of 4D self-duality

We unify the Lorentz- and O(2) duality-covariant approach to 4D self-dual theories by Pasti, Sorokin and Tonin (PST) with the formulation involving an auxiliary tensor field. We present the basic features of the new hybrid approach, including symmetries of the relevant generalized PST action. Its salient peculiarity is the unique form of the realization of the PST gauge symmetries. The corresponding transformations do not affect the auxiliary tensor field, which guarantees the self-duality of the nonlinear actions in which the O(2) invariant interactions are constructed out of the tensor field.

Tunneling dynamics in exactly-solvable models with triple-well potentials

Inspired by new trends in atomtronics, cold atoms devices and Bose-Einstein condensate dynamics, we apply a general technique of N=4 extended Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics to isospectral Hamiltonians with triple-well potentials, i.e. symmetric and asymmetric. Expressions of quantum-mechanical propagators, which take into account all states of the spectrum, are obtained, within the N = 4 SQM approach, in the closed form. For the initial Hamiltonian of a harmonic oscillator, we obtain the explicit expressions of potentials, wavefunctions and propagators. The obtained results are applied to tunneling dynamics of localized states in triple-well potentials and for studying its features. In particular, we observe a Josephson-type tunneling transition of a wave packet, the effect of its partial trapping and a non-monotonic dependence of tunneling dynamics on the shape of a three-well potential. We investigate, among others, the possibility of controlling tunneling transport by changing parameters of the central well, and we briefly discuss potential applications of this aspect to atomtronic devices.

ADM reduction of IIB on $H^{p,q}$ and dS braneworld

We propose a new Kaluza-Klein reduction scheme based on ADM decomposition. The scheme has been motivated by AdS/CFT, especially by how the worldvolume theory should appear from the supergravity side. We apply the scheme to IIB supergravity reduced on a 5D hyperboloidal $\cH^5$ space, and show that an (A)dS "braneworld" is be realized after further reduction to 4D. We comment on applications to cosmology and black hole physics. In particular, the scheme should provide a proper paradigm for black hole physics.

$N^3$ entropy of M5 branes from dielectric effect

We observe that the $N^3$ entropy behavior of near-extermal M5 branes can be reproduced from SYM side with the role of Myers' terms. We start by generalizing the Klebanov-Tseytlin (KT) supergravity solution that displays the $N^3$ entropy behavior. The new feature of the general solution is visibility of the "internal" degrees of the M5 branes, i.e., the M0 branes and the M2 branes. With the rationale provided by the supergravity analysis, we consider a D0 brane quantum mechanical setup with Myers' terms. Using localization technique, we show that the leading $N^3$ behavior of the free energy comes from the "classical contribution" with the rest sub-leading.

Near-Extremal Black Branes with n*3 Entropy Growth

In this paper, which is a companion to ArXiv:1204.2711[hep-th], we formulate a criterion for constructing 11D/10D maximal supergravity black-brane solutions with the near-extremal $S\sim n^3T^5$ entropy-temperature relation. We present explicit examples of such solutions with special attention paid to thermodynamics of black M-waves (KK-waves), intersecting/interpolating black branes with KK-waves, M2/M5 branes and their descents. We find the conditions on charges and numbers of branes in intersections, under which the dielectric effect of brane polarization becomes manifest on the supergravity side. We also briefly discuss the shear viscosity per entropy bound of M5 and D4 black branes within the AdS/CFT hydrodynamical limit.

Fuzzy Kaluza-Klein induced M2's from a single M5

We propose an algorithmic procedure of obtaining multiple M2 brane dynamics starting with an action of a single M5 brane. The procedure involves a novel Kaluza-Klein reduction. First, the M5 brane action is truncated to keep a few leading terms in the derivative expansion. Then 3+3 splitting of dimensions is carried out. With expansion in terms of the S*2 spherical harmonics, the fields are associated with SU(N) (or its infinite extension) gauge algebra. We present an elaborate reduction procedure that leads to ABJM theory when the fuzzy spherical harmonics are replaced by SU(N) gauge generators.
