Character on a homogeneous space

In this paper we look at the notion of cohomological triviality of fibrations of homogeneous spaces of affine algebraic groups defined over $\mathbb{C}$ and use topological methods, primarily the theory of covering spaces. This is made possible because of the structure theory of affine algebraic groups. Further, we generalize our results for arbitrary connected algebraic groups and their homogeneous spaces. As an application of our methods, we give a structure result for quasi-reductive algebraic groups(i.e groups whose unipotent radical is trivial), upto isogeny.

On complete reducibility in characteristic $p$

Let $G$ be a reductive group over a field $k$ which is algebraically closed of characteristic $p \neq 0$. We prove a structure theorem for a class of subgroup schemes of $G$, for $p$ bounded below by the Coxeter number of $G$. As applications, we derive semi-simplicity results, generalizing earlier results of Serre proven in 1998, and also obtain an analogue of Luna's étale slice theorem for suitable bounds on $p$.

Formal orbifolds and orbifold bundles in positive characteristic

We define formal orbifolds over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic as curves together with some branch data. Their étale coverings and their fundamental groups are also defined. These fundamental group approximates the fundamental group of an appropriate affine curve. We also define vector bundles on these objects and the category of orbifold bundles on any smooth projective curve. Analogues of various statement about vector bundles which are true in characteristic zero are proved. Some of these are positive characteristic avatar of notions which appear in the second author's work ([Par]) in characteristic zero.

Automorphism group of a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety

Let $G$ be a simple, adjoint, algebraic group over the field of complex numbers, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G$, $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. Let $Z(w,\underline i)$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of the Schubert variety $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline i$ of $w$. In this article, we compute the connected component $Aut^0(Z(w, \underline i))$ of the automorphism group of $Z(w,\underline i)$ containing the identity automorphism. We show that $Aut^0(Z(w, \underline i))$ contains a closed subgroup isomorphic to $B$ if and only if $w^{-1}(α_0)<0$, where $α_0$ is the highest root. If $w_0$ denotes the longest element of $W$, then we prove that $Aut^0(Z(w_0, \underline i))$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$. It is also shown that this parabolic subgroup depends very much on the chosen reduced expression $\underline i$ of $w_0$ and we describe all parabolic subgroups of $G$ that occur as $Aut^0(Z(w_0, \underline i))$. If $G$ is simply laced, then we show that for every $w\in W$ and for every reduced expression $\underline i$ of $w$, $ Aut^0(Z(w, \underline i))$ is a quotient of the parabolic subgroup $Aut^0(Z(w_0, \underline j))$ of $G$ for a suitable choice of a reduced expression $\underline j$ of $w_0$. We also prove that the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties are rigid for simply laced groups and their deformations are unobstructed in general.

A splitting theorem for good complexifications

The purpose of this paper is to produce restrictions on fundamental groups of manifolds admitting good complexifications by proving the following Cheeger-Gromoll type splitting theorem: Any closed manifold $M$ admitting a good complexification has a finite-sheeted regular covering $M_1$ such that $M_1$ admits a fiber bundle structure with base $(S^1)^k$ and fiber $N$ that admits a good complexification and also has zero virtual first Betti number. We give several applications to manifolds of dimension at most 5.

Fundamental group of a geometric invariant theoretic quotient

Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth projective variety, defined over an algebraically closed field, equipped with an action of a connected reductive affine algebraic group $G$, and let ${\mathcal L}$ be a $G$--equivariant very ample line bundle on $M$. Assume that the GIT quotient $M/\!\!/G$ is a nonempty set. We prove that the homomorphism of algebraic fundamental groups $π_1(M)\, \longrightarrow\, π_1(M/\!\!/G)$, induced by the rational map $M\, \longrightarrow\, M/\!\!/G$, is an isomorphism. If $k\,=\, \mathbb C$, then we show that the above rational map $M\, \longrightarrow \, M/\!\!/G$ induces an isomorphism between the topological fundamental groups.

Nef cone of flag bundles over a curve

Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve defined over an algebraically closed field $k$, and let $E$ be a vector bundle on $X$. We compute the nef cone of any flag bundle associated to $E$.

Tensor product theorem for Hitchin pairs -An algebraic approach

We give an algebraic approach to the study of Hitchin pairs and prove the tensor product theorem for Higgs semistable Hitchin pairs over smooth projective curves defined over algebraically closed fields $k$ of characteristic $0$ and characteristic $p$, with $p$ satisfying some natural bounds. We also prove the corresponding theorem for polystable bundles.

An analogue of the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem and some applications

We prove an analogue in higher dimensions of the classical Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem for strongly stable vector bundles of degree 0 on a smooth projective variety $X$ with a fixed ample line bundle $Θ$. As applications, over fields of characteristic zero, we give a new proof of the main theorem in a recent paper of Balaji and Kollár and derive an effective version of this theorem; over uncountable fields of positive characteristics, if $G$ is a simple and simply connected algebraic group and the characteristic of the field is bigger than the Coxeter index of $G$, we prove the existence of strongly stable principal $G$ bundles on smooth projective surfaces whose holonomy group is the whole of $G$.

Automorphisms of curves fixing the order two points of the Jacobian

Let X be an irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least two, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from two. If X admits a nontrivial automorphism σthat fixes pointwise all the order two points of Pic}^0(X), then we prove that X is hyperelliptic with σbeing the unique hyperelliptic involution. As a corollary, if a nontrivial automorphisms σ' of X fixes pointwise all the theta characteristics on X, then X is hyperelliptic with σ' being its hyperelliptic involution.

On the spectrum of asymptotic slopes

The slopes of maximal subbundles of rank $s$ divided by the degree of the map under various pull backs form a bounded collection of numbers called the $s$-spectrum of the bundle. We study the supremum of the $s$-spectrum and determine it in terms of the Harder Narasimhan filtration of the bundle.

Monodromy group for a strongly semistable principal bundle over a curve, II

Let $X$ be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve defined over a field $k$. Assume that $X$ has a $k$-rational point; fix a $k$-rational point $x\in X$. From these data we construct an affine group scheme ${\mathcal G}_X$ defined over the field $k$ as well as a principal ${\mathcal G}_X$-bundle $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$ over the curve $X$. The group scheme ${\mathcal G}_X$ is given by a ${\mathbb Q}$--graded neutral Tannakian category built out of all strongly semistable vector bundles over $X$. The principal bundle $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$ is tautological. Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group, defined over $k$, that does not admit any nontrivial character which is trivial on the connected component, containing the identity element, of the reduced center of $G$. Let $E_G$ be a strongly semistable principal $G$-bundle over $X$. We associate to $E_G$ a group scheme $M$ defined over $k$, which we call the monodromy group scheme of $E_G$, and a principal $M$-bundle $E_M$ over $X$, which we call the monodromy bundle of $E_G$. The group scheme $M$ is canonically a quotient of ${\mathcal G}_X$, and $E_M$ is the extension of structure group of $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$. The group scheme $M$ is also canonically embedded in the fiber ${\rm Ad}(E_G)_{x}$ over $x$ of the adjoint bundle.

Euler Obstruction and Defects of Functions on Singular Varieties

Several authors have proved Lefschetz type formulae for the local Euler obstruction. In particular, a result of this type is proved in [BLS].The formula proved in that paper turns out to be equivalent to saying that the local Euler obstruction, as a constructible function, satisfies the local Euler condition (in bivariant theory) with respect to general linear forms. The purpose of this work is to understand what prevents the local Euler obstruction of satisfying the local Euler condition with respect to functions which are singular at the considered point. This is measured by an invariant (or ``defect'') of such functions that we define below. We give an interpretation of this defect in terms of vanishing cycles, which allows us to calculate it algebraically. When the function has an isolated singularity, our invariant can be defined geometrically, via obstruction theory. We notice that this invariant unifies the usual concepts of {\it the Milnor number} of a function and of the {\it local Euler obstruction} of an analytic set.

Semistable Principal Bundles-II (in positive characteristics)

Let H be a semisimple algebaric group and let X be a smooth projective curve defined over an algebraically closed field k. In the first part of this paper we show that the moduli of semistable principal H-bundles exists once given a "low-height" representation of H. We also show the projectivity of the moduli space if p > ψ, where ψis a representation theoritic index. The projectivity is a consequence of a semistable reduction theorem. The irreducibility of the moduli space of semistable H-bundles for simple and simply connected group is obtained as a consequence.
