Fresh Look at Polarized Deuterons at the Nuclotron/NICA \& HIAF and Beyond

Being a spin-1 particle, the deuteron, when polarized, offers access to a wide range of interesting tensor observables. A quest for tensor asymmetries is at the heart of the spin physics with polarized deuterons at future colliders, and calls for frequent tensor polarization flips in storage rings or in deuterium targets. Here we focus on the JEDI developed technique of the Fourier analysis of the horizontal polarization oscillations under continuous radiofrequency driven spin flips. The so generated time-stamped oscillating helicity of stored particles paves the way to the nucleon/nucleus spin structure studies and to the search for the parity violation. Simultaneously a whole set of tensor spin asymmetries, including the off-diagonal ones needed for searches for the T-violation beyond the Standard Model, will be produced. A crucial ingredient is a long polarization lifetime, and we report the first analytic treatment of decoherence of the tensor polarization under continuous radiofrequency spin flips. Our principal conclusion is that at low- and intermediate-energy accelerators the deuteron polarization lifetime could be in the ballpark of several hours, making the oscillating polarization approach viable at Nuclotron/NICA and HIAF. We comment on a utility of the flattop spin-tensor dichroism via oscillations in the cross section of interaction of deuterons in the internal target as a monitor of the tensor polarization. Simultaneously, the dichroism effect can be used for measuring the spin precession frequences and as a comagnetometer to synchronize spin phases of colliding bunches in a collider.

New approach to search for parity-even and parity-odd time-reversal violation beyond the Standard Model in a storage ring

Time-reversal breaking and parity-conserving millistrong interactions, suggested in 1965, still remain a viable mechanism of CP-violation beyond the Standard Model. One of its possible manifestations is the T-odd asymmetry in the transmission of tensor-polarized deuterons through a vector-polarized hydrogen gas target. Upon the rotation of the deuteron polarization from the vertical direction into the ring plane, the T-odd asymmetries, odd against the reversal of the proton polarization in the target, will continuously oscillate with first or second harmonics of the spin precession frequency. The Fourier analysis of the oscillating T-odd asymmetries allows for an easy separation from background persistent in conventional experiments employing static vector and tensor polarizations.

Quantum-Mechanical Description of Spin-1/2 Particles and Nuclei Channeled in Bent Crystals

General quantum-mechanical description of relativistic particles and nuclei with spin 1/2 channeled in bent crystals is performed with the use of the cylindrical coordinate system. The previously derived Dirac equation in this system is added by terms characterizing anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments. A transformation to the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, a derivation of the quantum-mechanical equations of motion for particles and their spins, and a determination of classical limit of these equations are fulfilled in the general case. A physical nature of main peculiarities of description of particles and nuclei in the cylindrical coordinate system is ascertained.

Foldy-Wouthyusen wave functions and conditions of transformation between Dirac and Foldy-Wouthuysen representations

The block-diagonalization of the Hamiltonian is not sufficient for the transformation to the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) representation. The conditions enabling the transition from the Dirac representation to the FW one are formulated and proved. The connection between wave functions in the two representations is derived. The results obtained allows calculating expectation values of operators corresponding to main classical quantities.

Equivalence principle and experimental tests of gravitational spin effects

We study the possibility of experimental testing the manifestations of equivalence principle in spin-gravity interactions. We reconsider the earlier experimental data and get the first experimental bound on anomalous gravitomagnetic moment. The spin coupling to the Earth's rotation may also be explored at the extensions of neutron EDM and g-2 experiments. The spin coupling to the terrestrial gravity produces a considerable effect which may be discovered at the planned deuteron EDM experiment. The Earth's rotation should also be taken into account in optical experiments on a search for axionlike particles.

Semiclassical limit for Dirac particles interacting with a gravitational field

The behavior of spin-1/2 particle in a weak static gravitational field is considered. The Dirac Hamiltonian is diagonalized by the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation providing also the simple form for the momentum and spin polarization operators. The operator equations of momentum and spin motion are derived for a first time. Their semiclassical limit is analyzed. The dipole spin-gravity coupling in the previously found (another) Hamiltonian does not lead to any observable effects. The general agreement between the quantum and classical analysis is established, contrary to several recent claims. The expression for gravitational Stern-Gerlach force is derived. The helicity evolution in the gravitational field and corresponding accelerated frame coincides, being the manifestation of the equivalence principle.

Spin Oscillations in Storage Rings

The dependence of the particle rotation frequency on the particle orbit perturbations is found. The exact equation of spin motion in the cylindrical coordinate system is derived. The calculated formula for the frequency of g-2 precession is in the best agreement with previous results. Nevertheless, this formula contains the additional oscillatory term that can be used for fitting. The influence of spin oscillations on the spin dynamics in the EDM experiment is negligible.

Particle and spin motion in polarized media

Quantum mechanical equations of motion are obtained for particles and spin in media with polarized electrons in the presence of external fields. The motion of electrons and their spins is governed by the exchange interaction, while the motion of positrons and their spins is governed by the annihilation interaction. The equations obtained describe the motion of particles and spin in both magnetic and nonmagnetic media. The evolution of positronium spin in polarized media is investigated. Media with polarized electrons can be used for polarization of positronium beams.
