Form factor $π^0\to γ^* +γ^*$ at different photon virtualities

The $π^0 γγ$ vertex for virtual photons of squared masses $q_1^2$ and $q_2^2$ plays a vital rôle in several physical processes; for example for $q_1^2<0$, $q_2^2<0$, in the two-photon physics reaction $e^+ e^-\to e^+ e^- π^0$, and for $q_1^2>0$, $q_2^2>0$, in the annihilation process $e^+ e^-\to π^0 l^+ l^-$. It is also of interest because of its link to the axial anomaly. We suggest a new approach to this problem. We have obtained a closed analytic expression for the vertex in the limit in which at least one of $|q_1^2|$ and $|q_2^2|$ is large for arbitrary fixed values of the ratio $q_1^2/q_2^2$. We compare our results with those obtained previously by Brodsky and Lepage. It should be straightforward to test our predictions experimentally.

A Comment on BPS States in F-theory in 8 Dimensions

We study some aspects of enhanced gauge symmetries in F-theory compactified on K3. We find open string configurations connecting various 7-branes which represent stable BPS states. In this approach we recover $D_n$ and $E_n$ gauge groups previously found from an analysis of sigularities of the moduli space of elliptically fibered K3 manifolds as well as examples of non-perturbative realizations of $A_n$ groups.

Anomalous Currents in SCFT$_4$

We analyse the critical behaviour of anomalous currents in N=1 four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories in the context of electric-magnetic duality. We show that the anomalous dimension of the Konishi superfield is related to the slope of the beta function at the critical point. We construct a duality map for the Konishi current in the minimal SQCD. As a byproduct we compute the slope of the beta function in the strong coupling regime. We note that the OPE of the stress tensor with itself does not close, but mixes with the Konishi operator. As a result in superconformal theories in four dimensions (SCFT$_4$) there are {\sl two} central charges; they allow us to count both the vector multiplet and the matter multiplet effective degrees of freedom. Some applications to N=4 SYM are discussed.

Topological Reduction of 4D SYM to 2D $σ$--Models

By considering a (partial) topological twisting of supersymmetric Yang-Mills compactified on a 2d space with `t Hooft magnetic flux turned on we obtain a supersymmetric $σ$-model in 2 dimensions. For N=2 SYM this maps Donaldson observables on products of two Riemann surfaces to quantum cohomology ring of moduli space of flat connections on a Riemann surface. For N=4 SYM it maps $S$-duality to $T$-duality for $σ$-models on moduli space of solutions to Hitchin equations.

Twisting of N=1 SUSY Gauge Theories and Heterotic Topological Theories

It is shown that $D=4$ $N=1$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory with an appropriate supermultiplet of matter can be twisted on compact Kähler manifold. The conditions of cancellation of anomalies of BRST charge are found. The twisted theory has an appropriate BRST charge. We find a non-trivial set of physical operators defined as classes of the cohomology of this BRST \op . We prove that the physical correlators are independent on external Kähler metric up to a power of a ratio of two Ray-Singer torsions for the Dolbeault cohomology complex on a Kähler manifold. The correlators of local physical \op s turn out to be independent of anti-holomorphic coordinates defined with a complex structure on the Kähler manifold. However a dependence of the correlators on holomorphic coordinates can still remain. For a hyperkähler metric the physical correlators turn out to be independent of all coordinates of insertions of local physical \op s.

On sphaleron deformations induced by Yukawa interactions

Due to the presence of the chiral anomaly sphalerons with Chern-Simons number a half (CS=1/2) are the only static configurations that allow for a fermion level crossing in the two-dimensional Abelian-Higgs model with massless fermions, i.e. in the absence of Yukawa interactions. In the presence of fermion-Higgs interactions we demonstrate the existence of zero energy solutions to the one-dimensional Dirac equation at deformed sphalerons with CS$\neq 1/2 .$ Induced level crossing due to Yukawa interactions illustrates a non-trivial generalization of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem and of the equivalence between parity anomaly in odd and the chiral anomaly in even dimensions. We discuss a subtle manifestation of this effect in the standard electroweak theory at finite temperatures.

Liouville theory and special coadjoint Virasoro orbits

We describe the Hamiltonian reduction of the coajoint Kac-Moody orbits to the Virasoro coajoint orbits explicitly in terms of the Lagrangian approach for the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten theory. While a relation of the coajoint Virasoro orbit $Diff \; S^1 /SL(2,R)$ to the Liouville theory has been already studied we analyse the role of special coajoint Virasoro orbits $Diff \; S^1/\tilde{T}_{\pm ,n}$ corresponding to stabilizers generated by the vector fields with double zeros. The orbits with stabilizers with single zeros do not appear in the model. We find an interpretation of zeros $x_i$ of the vector field of stabilizer $\tilde{T}_{\pm ,n}$ and additional parameters $q_i$, $i = 1,...,n$, in terms of quantum mechanics for $n$ point particles on the circle. We argue that the special orbits are generated by insertions of "wrong sign" Liouville exponential into the path integral. The additional parmeters $q_i$ are naturally interpreted as accessory parameters for the uniformization map. Summing up the contributions of the special Virasoro orbits we get the integrable sinh-Gordon type theory.

The $SU(2)$ Global Anomaly Through Level Circling

We discuss a novel manifestation of the $SU(2)$ global anomaly in an $SU(2)$ gauge theory with an odd number of chiral quark doublets and arbitrary Yukawa couplings. We argue that the massive 4-dim.($D=4$) Euclidean Dirac operator is nonhermitean with its spectrum of eigenvalues $(λ,-λ)$ lying in pairs in the complex plane. Consequently the existence of an odd number of normalizable zero modes of the 5-dim.($D=5$) massive Dirac operator is equivalent to a fermionic level exchange phenomenon, level ``circling'', under continuous topologically nontrivial deformations of the external gauge field. More generally global anomalies are a manifestation of fermionic level ``circling'' in any $SP(2n)$ gauge theory with an odd number of massive fermions in the spinor representation and arbitrary Yukawa couplings.
