The Dusty Aftermath of a Rapid Nova: V5579 Sgr

V5579 Sgr was a fast nova discovered in 2008 April 18.784 UT. We present the optical spectroscopic observations of the nova observed from the Castanet Tolosan, SMARTS and CTIO observatories spanning over 2008 April 23 to 2015 May 11. The spectra are dominated by hydrogen Balmer, Fe II and O I lines with P-Cygni profiles in the early phase, typical of an Fe II class nova. The spectra show He I and He II lines along with forbidden lines from N, Ar, S, and O in the nebular phase. The nova showed a pronounced dust formation episode that began about 20 days after the outburst. The dust temperature and mass were estimated using the WISE data from spectral energy distribution (SED) fits. The PAH-like features are also seen in the nova ejecta in the mid-IR Gemini spectra taken 522 d after the discovery. Analysis of the light curve indicates values of t$_2$ and t$_3$ about 9 and 13 days, respectively, placing the nova in the category of fast nova. The best fit cloudy model of the early decline phase JHK spectra obtained on 2008 May 3 and the nebular optical spectrum obtained on 2011 June 2 shows a hot white dwarf source with T$_{BB}$ $\sim$ 2.6 $\times$ 10$^5$ K having a luminosity of 9.8 $\times$ 10$^{36}$ ergs s$^{-1}$. Our abundance analysis shows that the ejecta is significantly enhanced relative to solar, O/H = 32.2, C/H = 15.5 and N/H = 40.0 in the early decline phase and O/H = 5.8, He/H = 1.5 and N/H = 22.0 in the nebular phase.

RankSum An unsupervised extractive text summarization based on rank fusion

In this paper, we propose Ranksum, an approach for extractive text summarization of single documents based on the rank fusion of four multi-dimensional sentence features extracted for each sentence: topic information, semantic content, significant keywords, and position. The Ranksum obtains the sentence saliency rankings corresponding to each feature in an unsupervised way followed by the weighted fusion of the four scores to rank the sentences according to their significance. The scores are generated in completely unsupervised way, and a labeled document set is required to learn the fusion weights. Since we found that the fusion weights can generalize to other datasets, we consider the Ranksum as an unsupervised approach. To determine topic rank, we employ probabilistic topic models whereas semantic information is captured using sentence embeddings. To derive rankings using sentence embeddings, we utilize Siamese networks to produce abstractive sentence representation and then we formulate a novel strategy to arrange them in their order of importance. A graph-based strategy is applied to find the significant keywords and related sentence rankings in the document. We also formulate a sentence novelty measure based on bigrams, trigrams, and sentence embeddings to eliminate redundant sentences from the summary. The ranks of all the sentences computed for each feature are finally fused to get the final score for each sentence in the document. We evaluate our approach on publicly available summarization datasets CNN/DailyMail and DUC 2002. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms other existing state-of-the-art summarization methods.

X-ray confirmation of the intermediate polar IGR J16547-1916

Using X-ray observations from the NuSTAR and Swift satellites, we present temporal and spectral properties of an intermediate polar (IP) IGR J16547-1916. A persistent X-ray period at ~ 546 s confirming the optical spin period obtained from previous observations is detected. The detection of a strong X-ray spin pulse reinforces the classification of this system as an intermediate polar. The lack of orbital or side-band periodicities in the X-rays implies that the system is accreting predominantly via a disk. A variable covering absorber appears to be responsible for the spin pulsations in the low energy range. In the high energy band, the pulsations are likely due to the self occultation of tall shocks above the white dwarf surface. The observed double-humped X-ray spin pulse profile indicates two-pole accretion geometry with tall accretion regions in short rotating IP IGR J16547-1916. We present the variation of the spin pulse profile over an orbital phase to account for the effects of orbital motion on the spin pulsation. X-ray spectra obtained from the contemporaneous observations of Swift and NuSTAR in the 0.5-78.0 keV energy band are modeled with a maximum temperature of 31 keV and a blackbody temperature of 64 eV, along with a common column density of $1.8\times10^{23} cm^{-2}$ and a power-law index of -0.22 for the covering fraction. An additional Gaussian component and a reflection component are needed to account for a fluorescent emission line at 6.4 keV and the occurrence of X-ray reflection in the system. We also present the spin phase-resolved spectral variations of IGR J16547-1916 in the 0.5-78.0 keV energy band and find dependencies in the X-ray spectral parameters during the rotation of the white dwarf.

Hermes: a Fast, Fault-Tolerant and Linearizable Replication Protocol

Today's datacenter applications are underpinned by datastores that are responsible for providing availability, consistency, and performance. For high availability in the presence of failures, these datastores replicate data across several nodes. This is accomplished with the help of a reliable replication protocol that is responsible for maintaining the replicas strongly-consistent even when faults occur. Strong consistency is preferred to weaker consistency models that cannot guarantee an intuitive behavior for the clients. Furthermore, to accommodate high demand at real-time latencies, datastores must deliver high throughput and low latency. This work introduces Hermes, a broadcast-based reliable replication protocol for in-memory datastores that provides both high throughput and low latency by enabling local reads and fully-concurrent fast writes at all replicas. Hermes couples logical timestamps with cache-coherence-inspired invalidations to guarantee linearizability, avoid write serialization at a centralized ordering point, resolve write conflicts locally at each replica (hence ensuring that writes never abort) and provide fault-tolerance via replayable writes. Our implementation of Hermes over an RDMA-enabled reliable datastore with five replicas shows that Hermes consistently achieves higher throughput than state-of-the-art RDMA-based reliable protocols (ZAB and CRAQ) across all write ratios while also significantly reducing tail latency. At 5% writes, the tail latency of Hermes is 3.6X lower than that of CRAQ and ZAB.

Stochastic modeling of multiwavelength variability of the classical BL Lac object OJ 287 on timescales ranging from decades to hours

We present the results of our power spectral density analysis for the BL Lac object OJ\,287, utilizing the {\it Fermi}-LAT survey at high-energy $γ$-rays, {\it Swift}-XRT in X-rays, several ground-based telescopes and the {\it Kepler} satellite in the optical, and radio telescopes at GHz frequencies. The light curves are modeled in terms of continuous-time auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) processes. Owing to the inclusion of the {\it Kepler} data, we were able to construct \emph{for the first time} the optical variability power spectrum of a blazar without any gaps across $\sim6$ dex in temporal frequencies. Our analysis reveals that the radio power spectra are of a colored-noise type on timescales ranging from tens of years down to months, with no evidence for breaks or other spectral features. The overall optical power spectrum is also consistent with a colored noise on the variability timescales ranging from 117 years down to hours, with no hints of any quasi-periodic oscillations. The X-ray power spectrum resembles the radio and optical power spectra on the analogous timescales ranging from tens of years down to months. Finally, the $γ$-ray power spectrum is noticeably different from the radio, optical, and X-ray power spectra of the source: we have detected a characteristic relaxation timescale in the {\it Fermi}-LAT data, corresponding to $\sim 150$\,days, such that on timescales longer than this, the power spectrum is consistent with uncorrelated (white) noise, while on shorter variability timescales there is correlated (colored) noise.

Primary black hole spin in OJ287 as determined by the General Relativity centenary flare

OJ287 is a quasi-periodic quasar with roughly 12 year optical cycles. It displays prominent outbursts which are predictable in a binary black hole model. The model predicted a major optical outburst in December 2015. We found that the outburst did occur within the expected time range, peaking on 2015 December 5 at magnitude 12.9 in the optical R-band. Based on Swift/XRT satellite measurements and optical polarization data, we find that it included a major thermal component. Its timing provides an accurate estimate for the spin of the primary black hole, chi = 0.313 +- 0.01. The present outburst also confirms the established general relativistic properties of the system such as the loss of orbital energy to gravitational radiation at the 2 % accuracy level and it opens up the possibility of testing the black hole no-hair theorem with a 10 % accuracy during the present decade.

Characterization of Power-to-Phase Conversion in High-Speed P-I-N Photodiodes

Fluctuations of the optical power incident on a photodiode can be converted into phase fluctuations of the resulting electronic signal due to nonlinear saturation in the semiconductor. This impacts overall timing stability (phase noise) of microwave signals generated from a photodetected optical pulse train. In this paper, we describe and utilize techniques to characterize this conversion of amplitude noise to phase noise for several high-speed (>10 GHz) InGaAs P-I-N photodiodes operated at 900 nm. We focus on the impact of this effect on the photonic generation of low phase noise 10 GHz microwave signals and show that a combination of low laser amplitude noise, appropriate photodiode design, and optimum average photocurrent is required to achieve phase noise at or below -100 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz offset a 10 GHz carrier. In some photodiodes we find specific photocurrents where the power-to-phase conversion factor is observed to go to zero.

Bond-randomness-induced Neel order in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains

Quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum spin systems show a wide range of interesting phenomena such as the spin-Peierls transition and disorder driven long range ordering. While there is no magnetic long range order in strictly one-dimensional systems, in real systems some amount of interchain coupling is always present and AF long range order may appear below a Neel ordering temperature T_N. We study the effect of bond randomness on Neel ordering in weakly coupled random AF S=1/2 chains both with and without dimerization (or spin-Peierls order). We use the real space renormalization group method to tackle the intrachain couplings, and a mean-field approximation to treat the interchain coupling. We show that in the non-dimerized chain, disorder (represented by bond randomness) enhances the Neel order parameter; in the dimerized chain which shows no magnetic ordering in the weak interchain coupling limit without randomness, disorder can actually lead to long range order. Thus disorder is shown to lead to, or enhance the tendency toward long range order, providing another example of the order-by-disorder phenomenon. We make a qualitative comparison of our results with the observed phenomenon of doping induced long range ordering in quasi-one-dimensional spin systems such as CuGeO_3.

Theory for Phase Transitions in Insulating Vanadium Oxide

We show that the recently proposed S=2 bond model with orbital degrees of freedom for insulating V$_{2}$O$_{3}$ not only explains the anomalous magnetic ordering, but also other mysteries of the magnetic phase transition. The model contains an additional orbital degree of freedom that exhibits a zero temperature quantum phase transtion in the Ising universality class.

Orbitally Degenerate Spin-1 Model for Insulating V2O3

Motivated by recent neutron, X-ray absorption and resonant scattering experiments, we revisit the electronic structure of V2O3. We propose a model in which S=1 V3+ ions are coupled in the vertical V-V pairs forming two-fold orbitally degenerate configurations with S=2. Ferro-orbital ordering of the V-V pairs gives a description which is consistent with all experiments in the antiferromagnetic insulating phase.

Elementary excitations of magnetically ordered systems with orbital degeneracy

The Holstein-Primakoff transformation is generalized to develop a quantum flavor wave theory for spin systems with orbital degeneracy. Elementary excitations consist of spin, orbital, and spin-orbital waves. Spin and spin-orbital waves couple each other due to orbital anisotropy and Hund's rule, resulting in new modes observable by inelastic neutron scattering. In the SU(4) limit, flavor waves are dispersionless along one or more directions, and give rise to quantum fluctuations of reduced dimensionality.
