Black holes in extra dimensions can decay on the bulk

In the extra dimensional theories, with TeV scale Plank constant, black holes may be produced in the Large Hadron Collider experiments. We have argued that in the d-dimensional black hole, the intrinsically 4-dimensional brane fields do not see the same geometry at the horizon, as in a 4-dimensional space-time. Kaluza-Klein modes invades the brane and surroundings and the brane fields can be considered as a thermal system at the temperature of the black hole. From energy and entropy consideration, we show that whether or not a six-dimensional black hole will decay by emitting Kaluza-Klein modes or the standard model particles, will depend on the length scale of the extra dimensions as well as on the mass of the black hole. For higher dimensional black holes, Kaluza-Klein modes will dominate the decay.

Nuclear absorption and anomalous J/psi suppression in Pb+Pb collisions

We have studied the J/psi suppression in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS. J/psi production is assumed to be a two step process, (i) formation of c bar{c} pair, which is accurately calculable in QCD and (ii) formation of J/psi meson from the c bar{c} pair, which can be conveniently parameterized. In a pA/AA collision, as the c bar{c} pair pass through the nuclear medium, it gains relative square momentum. As a result, some of the c bar{c} pairs can gain enough momentum to cross the threshold to become open charm meson, leading to suppression in pA/AA collisions. The model without any free parameter could describe the of NA50 data on centrality dependence of the ratio's; J/psi over Drell-Yan, J/psi over minimum bias and also the Drell-Yan over minimum bias. The model was used to predict J/psi suppression at RHIC energy. At RHIC energy, hard processes may be important. With hard processes included, J/psi's are strongly suppressed, in agreement with other model calculations. We also show that centrality dependence of J/psi over minimum bias ratio can be used to determine the fraction of hard processes in the collision.

Direct photons from relativistic heavy ion collisions at CERN SPS and at RHIC

Assuming QGP as the initial state, we have analyzed the direct photon data, obtained by the WA98 collaboration, in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS. It was shown, that for small thermalisation time, two loop rate contribute substantially to high $p_T$ photons. We argue that for extremely short thermalisation time scale, the higher loop contribution should not be neglected. For thermalisation time 0.4 fm or greater, when higher loop contribution are not substantial, the initial temperature of the QGP is not large and the system does not produce enough hard $p_T$ photons to fit the WA98 experiment. For initial time in the ranges of 0.4-1.0 fm, WA98 data could be fitted only if the fluid has initial radial velocity in the range of 0.3-0.5c. The model was applied to predict photon spectrum at RHIC energy.

Nuclear absorption and $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions

We have analyzed the NA58 data on $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions. $J/ψ$ production is assumed to be a two step process, (i) formation of $c\bar{c}$ pair, which is accurately calculable in QCD and (ii) formation of $J/ψ$ meson from the $c\bar{c}$ pair, which can be conveniently parameterized. In a pA/AA collision, a $c\bar{c}$ pair gain relative square momentum as it passes through the nuclear medium and some of the $c\bar{c}$ pairs can gain enough momentum to cross the threshold to become an open charm meson, leading to suppression in pA/AA collisions. A new prescription is proposed for the gain in momentum square, consistent with Krammer process. The model without any free parameter could explain the $E_T$ dependence of $J/ψ$ over Drell-Yan ratio.

Transverse energy dependence of J/Psi suppression in Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy

Prediction for transverse energy dependence of $J/ψ$ to Drell-Yan ratio in Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy was obtained in a model which assume 100% absorption of $J/ψ$ above a threshold density. The threshold density was obtained by fitting the NA50 data on $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energy. At RHIC energy, hard processes may be important. Prediction of $J/ψ$ suppression with and without hard processes were obtained. With hard processes included, $J/ψ$'s are strongly suppressed.

Single photons from Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS, QGP vs. hadronic gas

In a hydrodynamic model, we have analysed the direct photon data obtained by the WA98 collaboration in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS. The transverse expansion of the system was taken into account. Two scenarios (i) formation of quark-gluon plasma and (ii) formation of hot hadronic gas were considered. Equally well description to the data were obtained in both the scenarios. However, hadronic gas scenario require very high initial temperature ($\sim$ 300 MeV) and it is difficult to conceive existence of hadron gas at that high temperature. If the hadronic fluid has small radial velocity (0.2c-0.3c) initially, the data are well explained in the hadronic gas scenario with reasonable initial temperatures.

$Θ$ vacua states in heavy ion collisions in presence of dissipation and noise

We have studied possible formation of $Θ$ vacua states in heavy ion collisions. Random phases of the chiral fields were evolved in a finite temperature potential, incorporating the breaking of $U_A(1)$ symmetry. Initial random phases very quickly settle into oscillation around the values dictated by the potential. The simulation study indicate that an initial $Θ$=0 state do not evolve into a $Θ$ $\neq$ 0 state. However, an initial $Θ$ $\neq$ 0 state, if formed in heavy ion collision, can survive, as a coherent superposition of a number of modes.

$J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions, a conventional description

We have analyzed the latest NA50 data on $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb + Pb collisions. $J/ψ$ production is assumed to be a two step process, (i) formation of $c\bar{c}$ pair, which is accurately calculable in QCD and (ii) formation of $J/ψ$ meson from the $c\bar{c}$ pair, which can be conveniently parameterized. In a pA/AA collision, the as the $c\bar{c}$ pair pass through the nuclear medium, it gain relative square momentum at the rate of $ε^2$ per unit path length. As a result, some of the $c\bar{c}$ pairs can gain enough momentum to cross the threshold to become an open charm meson, leading to suppression in pA/AA collisions. The parameters of the model were fixed from experimental data on the total $J/ψ$ cross section as a function of effective nuclear length. The model without any free parameter, give excellent description of NA50 data on $E_T$ dependence of $J/ψ$ to Drell-Yan ratio. The model was applied to predict the $E_T$ dependence of $J/ψ$ at RHIC energy. Much larger suppression of $J/ψ$, in agreement with other model calculations are predicted.

Disoriented chiral condensate in presence of dissipation and noise

We have investigated the phase transition and disoriented chiral condensate domain formation in linear sigma model. Solving the Langevin equation for the linear $σ$ model, we have shown that for zero mass pions the fields undergo phase transition above a certain temperature ($T_c$). For finite mass pions, there is no phase transition. It was also shown that when the fields, thermalised at temperature above $T_c$ are cooled down sufficiently rapidly, disoriented chiral condensate domains are formed quite late in the evolution, if the pions are assumed to be mass less. For massive pions, no large DCC domain is formed.

Lattice spacing dependence of phase transition temperature in the classical linear sigma model

We have investigated the phase transition properties of classical linear sigma model. The fields were kept in contact with a heat bath for sufficiently long time such that fields are equilibrated at the temperature of the heat bath. It was shown that the sigma model fields undergoes phase transition, but the transition temperature depend crucially on the lattice spacing. In the continuum limit, the transition temperature tends to zero or at least to a very low value.

Enhancement of gluonic dissociation of $J/ψ$ in viscous QGP

We have investigated the effect of viscosity on the gluonic dissociation of $J/ψ$ in an equilibrating plasma. Suppression of $J/ψ$ due to gluonic dissociation depend on the temperature and also on the chemical equilibration rate. In an equilibrating plasma, viscosity affects the temperature evolution and also the chemical equilibration rate, requiring both of them to evolve slowly compared to their ideal counter part. For Au+Au collisions at RHIC and LHC energies, gluonic dissociation of $J/ψ$ increases for a viscous plasma. Low $P_T$ $J/ψ$'s are found to be more suppressed due to viscosity than the high $P_T$ ones. Also the effect is more at LHC energy than at RHIC energy.

Transverse energy distributions and $J/ψ$ production in Pb+Pb collisions

We have analyzed the latest NA50 data on transverse energy distributions and $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions. The transverse energy distribution was analysed in the geometric model of AA collisions. In the geometric model, fluctuations in the number of NN collisions at fixed impact parameter are taken into account. Analysis suggests that in Pb+Pb collisions, individual NN collisions produces less $ $, than in other AA collisions. The nucleons are more transparent in Pb+Pb collisions. The transverse energy dependence of the $J/ψ$ suppression was obtained following the model of Blaizot et al, where charmonium suppression is assumed to be 100% effective above a threshold density. With fluctuations in number of NN collisions taken into account, good fit to the data is obtained, with a single parameter, the threshold density.

On possible $Θ$ vacua states in heavy ion collisions

We have simulated the possible $Θ$ vacua states in heavy ion collisions. In a quench like scenario, random phases of the chiral fields were evolved in a zero temperature potential incorporating the breaking of $U_A(1)$ symmetry. Initial random phases very quickly settles into oscillation around the values dictated by the potential. The simulation indicate that $Θ$ vacua states that can be populated in heavy ion collisions is a coherent superposition of a number of modes.

Interplay of friction and noise and enhancement of disoriented chiral condensate

Using the Langevin equation for the linear $σ$ model, we have investigated the effect of friction and noise on the possible disoriented chiral condensate formation. Friction and noise are supposed to suppress longwavelength oscillations and growth of disoriented chiral condensate domains. Details simulation shows that for heavy ion collisions, interplay of friction and noise occur in such a manner that formation of disoriented chiral condensate domains are enhanced.

Phase transition in linear sigma model and disoriented chiral condensate

It was also shown that when the fields thermalised at temperature above T_c are cooled down sufficiently rapidly, disoriented chiral condensate domains are formed quite late in the evolution.

Dissipation, noise and DCC domain formation

We investigate the effect of friction on domain formation in disoriented chiral condensate. We solve the equation of motion of the linear sigma model, in the Hartree approximation, including a friction and a white noise term. For quenched initial condition, we find that even in presence of noise and dissipation domain like structure emerges after a few fermi of evolution. Domain size as large as 5 fm can be formed.

Enhancement of disoriented chiral condensate domains with friction

We investigate the effect of friction on domain formation in disoriented chiral condensate. Including a friction term, we solve the equation of motion of the linear sigma model fields, in the Hartree approximation. With boost-invariance and cylinderical symmetry, irrespective of friction, on average, we donot find any indication of domain like formation with quenched initial condition. However, with or without friction, some events can be found with large instabilities, indicating possible DCC domain formation in those events. With friction time scale during which instabilities grows increases. Correspondingly, with friction, it is possible to obtain large sized domains in some particular events.

Effect of friction on disoriented chiral condensate formation

We have investigated the effect of friction on the DCC domain formation. We solve the Newton equation of motion for the O(4) fields, with quenched initial condition. The initial fields are randomly distributed in a Gaussian form. In one dimensional expansion, on the average, large DCC domains can not be formed. However, in some particular orbits, large instabilities may occur. This possibility also greatly diminishes with the introduction of friction. But, if the friction is large, the system may be overdamped and then, there is a possibility of large DCC domain formation in some events.
