Measurement of the inclusive $ν_μ$ charged current cross section on iron and hydrocarbon in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam

We report a measurement of the $ν_μ$ inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam. The measured inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon averaged over the T2K on-axis flux with a mean neutrino energy of 1.51 GeV are $(1.444\pm0.002(stat.)_{-0.157}^{+0.189}(syst.))\times 10^{-38}\mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{nucleon}$, and $(1.379\pm0.009(stat.)_{-0.147}^{+0.178}(syst.))\times 10^{-38}\mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{nucleon}$, respectively, and their cross section ratio is $1.047\pm0.007(stat.)\pm0.035(syst.)$. These results agree well with the predictions of the neutrino interaction model, and thus we checked the correct treatment of the nuclear effect for iron and hydrocarbon targets in the model within the measurement precisions.

Measurement of the Inclusive Electron Neutrino Charged Current Cross Section on Carbon with the T2K Near Detector

The T2K off-axis near detector, ND280, is used to make the first differential cross-section measurements of electron neutrino charged current interactions at energies ~1 GeV as a function of electron momentum, electron scattering angle and four-momentum transfer of the interaction. The total flux-averaged $ν_e$ charged current cross-section on carbon is measured to be $1.11\pm0.09~(stat)\pm0.18~(syst)\times10^{-38} cm^2/nucleon$. The differential and total cross-section measurements agree with the predictions of two leading neutrino interaction generators, NEUT and GENIE. The NEUT prediction is $1.23\times10^{-38} cm^2/nucleon$ and the GENIE prediction is $1.08\times10^{-38} cm^2/nucleon$. The total $ν_e$ charged current cross-section result is also in agreement with data from the Gargamelle experiment.

Improvement of the energy resolution of CdTe detectors by pulse height correction from waveform

Semiconductor detectors made of CdTe crystal have high gamma-ray detection efficiency and are usable at room temperature. However, the energy resolution of CdTe detectors for MeV gamma-rays is rather poor because of the significant hole trapping effect. We have developed a method to improve the energy resolution by correcting the pulse height using the waveform of the signal and achieved 2.0% (FWHM) energy resolution for 662keV gamma-rays. Best energy resolution was achieved at temperatures between -10 degrees C and 0 degrees C.

Letter of Intent: The Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment --- Detector Design and Physics Potential ---

We propose the Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) detector as a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector. It will serve as a far detector of a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment envisioned for the upgraded J-PARC, and as a detector capable of observing -- far beyond the sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande (Super-K) detector -- proton decays, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astronomical origins. The baseline design of Hyper-K is based on the highly successful Super-K, taking full advantage of a well-proven technology. (to be continued)

Design and performance of the muon monitor for the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment

This article describes the design and performance of the muon monitor for the T2K (Tokaito-Kamioka) long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. The muon monitor consists of two types of detector arrays: ionization chambers and silicon PIN photodiodes. It measures the intensity and profile of muons produced, along with neutrinos, in the decay of pions. The measurement is sensitive to the intensity and direction of the neutrino beam. The linearity and stability of the detectors were measured in beam tests to be within 2.4% and 1.5%, respectively. Based on the test results, the precision of the beam direction measured by the muon monitor is expected to be 0.25 mrad.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

Latest Results from the K2K experiment

The KEK to Kamioka long-baseline neutrino experiment (K2K) is the first accelerator-based experiment with hundreds of km neutrino path length. K2K focuses on the study of the existence of neutrino oscillations in $ν_μ$ disappearance that is observed in atmospheric neutrinos. With nearly pure muon neutrino beam produced with $5.6\times 10^{19}$ protons from 12 GeV PS on target, 56 neutrino events have been observed at Super-Kamiokande, the far detector at 250 km distance. The expectation is $80.6^{+7.3}_{-8.0}$ derived from the measurement at the near site. The experiment expects to accumulate $10^{20}$ protons on target, providing sufficient statistics to study neutrino oscillations by spectral analysis for $ν_μ$ disappearance.
