Hindered $ΔK=1$ Dipole Strength in octupole bands in $N=90$ $^{154}$Gd from Lifetime Measurements with $γ-γ$ fast timing technique

The lifetimes of the low-lying negative-parity $1^-$ state at 1414~keV and $2^-$ state at 1398~keV in $^{154}$Gd have been measured using the $γ$--$γ$ fast-timing technique with the VENTURE array at VECC, Kolkata. The states were populated through the $β$ decay of $^{154}$Tb, produced in proton-induced reactions at the K130 cyclotron. From the measured lifetimes, absolute $B(E1)$ transition strengths were deduced. The extracted $B(E1)$ values are compared with those of neighboring Gd isotopes and with Gogny-HFB-based $sdf$-IBM calculations. The results show that the measured $E1$ strengths from these states are strongly hindered compared with the corresponding $ΔK=0$ transitions, providing evidence for weak $ΔK=1$ dipole strength in $^{154}$Gd.

Quasi-elastic scattering for the nuclear ground state structure: An intriguing case of $^{30}$Si

Quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering measurements have been performed using the $^{28, 30}$Si projectiles off the $^{90}$Zr target at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Coupled-channels (CC) calculations were carried out in a large parameter space of quadrupole and hexadecapole deformations for the N=Z, $^{28}$Si and N=Z+2, $^{30}$Si nuclei. $^{28}$Si at the N=Z line is observed to be uniquely oblate shaped in its ground state. In contrast, for $^{30}$Si with just two additional neutrons -- oblate, prolate, and spherical CC descriptions are equally compatible with the measurements. To further investigate the nuclear structure evolution with varying neutron number, shell-model calculations were performed. These calculations reveal a sudden change in the nuclear structure aspects at $^{30}$Si in going from $^{28}$Si to $^{30}$Si. Combined reaction and structure analyses consistently indicate that $^{30}$Si does not possess a well-defined intrinsic shape, and it is a potential candidate for ``shape fluctuations" in its ground state.

The heating and cooling of 2D electrons at low temperatures

We present measurements of the cooling length $\ell_E$ for hot electrons in a GaAs-based high mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The thermal measurements are performed on a long 60 $μ$m-wide channel, which is Joule-heated at one end, along which there are three similar hot-electron thermocouples, spaced 30 $μ$m apart. The thermocouples measure an exponentially decaying temperature profile with a characteristic length $\ell_E$, which decreases from 23 to 16 $μ$m as the lattice temperature increases from 1.8 to 5 K. From a simple one-dimensional model of heat diffusion, we measure an inelastic scattering time which decreases from $τ_i \approx$ 0.36 to 0.18 ns. The measured $τ_i$ has a magnitude and temperature dependence consistent with acoustic phonon scattering times. We discuss how the sample design can be varied for further thermal investigations. Knowledge of the temperature profile and its gradient will prove useful in measurements of the thermal conductivity and the Nernst effect.

Features of Two-Quasiparticle Rotational Bands in Deformed Odd-Odd Nuclei, $156 \le A \le 168$

In present work, we evaluated the experimental data pertains to two quasiparticle rotational structures in deformed odd-odd nuclei in rare earth mass region. The compilation includes total 234 rotational bands among which 173 are rotational bands and 61 bandhead states. Gallagher Moszkowski doublets are identified for 63 two quasiparticle configurations which provide a good testing ground for np residual interaction systematics. The highest excitation energies reach approximately 18 MeV in 164Lu and 168Lu nuclide. The triplet configuration becomes ground state in case of 22 nuclides namely 156-170Ho, 156-176Tm and 162-168Lu. Signature splitting is reported for 76 bands and signature inversion is identified in 29 bands which indicate the presence of Coriolis couplings and evolving configuration mixing with spin. The average signature splitting amplitudes lies between 12 to 300 keV. Band crossings have been observed in case of 10 bands, often accompanying changes in the kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia as paired high-j quasiparticles align with the rotational axis. Halflife information is available for 58 bandhead. The branching ratios and effective gfactors remain scares. In total, 137 bands display regular level sequences of energy levels whereas 8 exhibit irregular patterns. The present evaluation of two quasiparticle rotational bands reveals substantial gaps in the experimental data and highlight the need of fresh measurements to support rigorous calculations and reliable systematics.

Modelling and Systematics of $\tfrac{1}{2}[521]\,ν$ Quasiparticle Rotational Bands in $N = 99,\;101,\;103$ Isotonic Chains

We analyze the $\tfrac{1}{2}[521]\,ν$ quasiparticle rotational bands along the $N = 99,\;101,\;103$ isotonic chains using semi-empirical model in which first and higher order Coriolis terms are treated perturbatively. A dedicated Python routine optimizes five parameters bandhead energy, inertia A, decoupling a, and Coriolis coefficients B and C for each nucleus. The calculations match experimental level spacings to within 5 keV. Staggering keeps a common phase across the three chains yet grows with spin and, on average, with both neutron and proton number. The inertia parameter rises smoothly with Z (e.g., A for N = 99: 10.6 to 12.4 keV), signaling a decrease in the moment of inertia as axial deformation weakens. Decoupling parameter a increases and then saturates for N = 99 and 103, indicating purer K = 1/2 structure at high Z; the N = 101 chain shows the opposite trend, pointing to stronger configuration mixing. The first order Coriolis term B becomes increasingly negative with Z, whereas the higher order term C shows chain specific sign changes. The present work, explore the dynamics of various physical parameters associated with ν1/2[521] quasiparticle rotational bands and helps to understand observed signature effects.

Measurement of relative isotopic yield distribution of even-even fission fragments from $^{235}$U($n_{th}$,$f$) following $γ$ ray spectroscopy

A detailed investigation on the relative isotopic distributions has been carried out for the first time in case of even-even correlated fission fragments for the $^{235}$U($n_{th}$,$f$) fission reaction. High-statistics data were obtained in a prompt $γ$ ray spectroscopy measurement during the EXILL campaign at ILL, Grenoble, France. The extensive off-line analysis of the coincidence data have been carried out using four different coincidence methods. Combining the results from 2-dimensional $γ-γ$ and 3-dimensional $γ-γ-γ$ coincidence analysis, a comprehensive picture of the relative isotopic yield distributions of the even-even neutron-rich fission fragments has emerged. The experimentally observed results have been substantiated by the theoretical calculations based on a novel approach of isospin conservation, and a reasonable agreement has been obtained. The calculations following the semi-empirical GEF model have also been carried out. The results from the GEF model calculations are found to be in fair agreement with the experimental results.

Isospin Dependence in Fission Fragment Yields

In the present paper, we explore the idea of isospin conservation in new situations and contexts based on the directions provided by our earlier works. We present the results of our calculations for the relative yields of neutron-rich fission fragments emitted in fast neutron-induced fission, 238U (n, fission) reaction by using the concept of the conservation of isospin and compare with the experimental data. Our results successfully reproduced the gross features of partition wise fission fragments distribution of 238U (n, fission). This confirms that in all kinds of fission, isospin remains pure in neutron-rich systems even at high excitations. Thus, isospin can be proven as an important quantum number for the prediction of fission fragment distribution.

End-to-End Latent Fingerprint Search

Latent fingerprints are one of the most important and widely used sources of evidence in law enforcement and forensic agencies. Yet the performance of the state-of-the-art latent recognition systems is far from satisfactory, and they often require manual markups to boost the latent search performance. Further, the COTS systems are proprietary and do not output the true comparison scores between a latent and reference prints to conduct quantitative evidential analysis. We present an end-to-end latent fingerprint search system, including automated region of interest (ROI) cropping, latent image preprocessing, feature extraction, feature comparison , and outputs a candidate list. Two separate minutiae extraction models provide complementary minutiae templates. To compensate for the small number of minutiae in small area and poor quality latents, a virtual minutiae set is generated to construct a texture template. A 96-dimensional descriptor is extracted for each minutia from its neighborhood. For computational efficiency, the descriptor length for virtual minutiae is further reduced to 16 using product quantization. Our end-to-end system is evaluated on three latent databases: NIST SD27 (258 latents); MSP (1,200 latents), WVU (449 latents) and N2N (10,000 latents) against a background set of 100K rolled prints, which includes the true rolled mates of the latents with rank-1 retrieval rates of 65.7%, 69.4%, 65.5%, and 7.6% respectively. A multi-core solution implemented on 24 cores obtains 1ms per latent to rolled comparison.

Intelligent Pinning Based Cooperative Secondary Control of Distributed Generators for Microgrid in Islanding Operation Mode

Motivated by the fact that the location(s) and structural properties of the pinning node(s) affect the algebraic connectivity of a network with respect to the reference value and thereby, its dynamic performance, this paper studies the application of intelligent single and multiple pinning of distributed cooperative secondary control of distributed generators (DGs) in islanded microgrid operation. It is shown that the intelligent selection of a pinning set based on the degree of connectivity and distance of leader DG(s) from the rest of the network improves the transient performance for microgrid voltage and frequency regulation. The efficacy of the distributed control strategy based on the proposed algorithms is illustrated via numerical results simulating typical scenarios for a variety of microgrid configurations.

Synchronization in Networks of Identical Systems via Pinning: Application to Distributed Secondary Control of Microgrids

Motivated by the need for fast synchronized operation of power microgrids, we analyze the problem of single and multiple pinning in networked systems. We derive lower and upper bounds on the algebraic connectivity of the network with respect to the reference signal. These bounds are utilized to devise a suboptimal algorithm with polynomial complexity to find a suitable set of nodes to pin the network effectively and efficiently. The results are applied to secondary voltage pinning control design for a microgrid in islanded operation mode. Comparisons with existing single and multiple pinning strategies clearly demonstrates the efficacy of the obtained results.

Crossing of large multiquasiparticle magnetic-rotation bands in $^{198}$Bi

High-spin states in the doubly-odd $^{198}$Bi nucleus have been studied by using the $^{185,187}$Re($^{16}$O, xn) reactions at the beam energy of 112.5 MeV. $γ-γ$ coincidence were measured by using the INGA array with 15 Compton suppressed clover HPGe detectors. The observed levels have been assigned definite spin-parity. The high spin structure is grouped into three bands (B1, B2 and B3), of which two (B1 and B2) exhibit the properties of magnetic rotation (MR). Tilted axis cranking calculations were carried out to explain the MR bands having large multi-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated results explain the bands B1 and B2 very nicely, confirming the shears mechanism and suggest a crossing of two MR bands in both the cases. The crossing is from 6-qp to 8-qp in band B1 and from 4-qp to 6-qp in band B2, a very rare finding. A semiclassical model has also been used to obtain the particle-hole interaction strengths for the bands B1 and B2, below the band crossing.

Status of head-on beam-beam compensation in RHIC

In polarized proton operation, the performance of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is limited by the head-on beam-beam effect. To overcome this limitation, two electron lenses are under commissioning. We give an overview of head-on beam-beam compensation in general and in the specific design for RHIC, which is based on electron lenses. The status of installation and commissioning are presented along with plans for the future.

Small Quadrupole Deformation for the Dipole Bands in 112In

High spin states in $^{112}$In were investigated using $^{100}$Mo($^{16}$O, p3n) reaction at 80 MeV. The excited level have been observed up to 5.6 MeV excitation energy and spin $\sim$ 20$\hbar$ with the level scheme showing three dipole bands. The polarization and lifetime measurements were carried out for the dipole bands. Tilted axis cranking model calculations were performed for different quasi-particle configurations of this doubly odd nucleus. Comparison of the calculations of the model with the B(M1) transition strengths of the positive and negative parity bands firmly established their configurations.

Binary corrected X-ray light curve of Cygnus X-3 : implications for the timing properties of the compact binary system

We study the binary corrected X-ray light curve of Cygnus X-3 using the RXTE-ASM data and RXTE-PCA data. We find that the X-ray template derived from the EXOSAT observations adequately explains the binary variations. Using the recently determined quadratic binary ephemeris we correct the RXTE-PCA lightcurve and obtain the power spectrum which shows distinct features of shifting towards the low frequency regime vis-a-vis the Galactic X-ray binaries. The power spectrum doesn't vary from the hard to the soft state. We also obtain the binary corrected RXTE-ASM monitoring lightcurve and examine the previously obtained correlation between soft X-ray (2-12 keV from RXTE-ASM), hard X-ray (20-100 keV from CGRO-BATSE) and radio (2.2 GHz from GBI) after the binary correction. We find that the correlation time scale is less than a day.

Correlated radio:X-ray emission in the hard states of Galactic microquasars

We present results of our study of correlated radio and X-ray emission in two black hole candidates and Galactic microquasars GRS 1915+105 and Cygnus X-1 in their steady long term hard states, along with Cygnus X-3 (using data obtained from RXTE-ASM, CGRO-BATSE and GBI). We detect a pivotal behavior in the X-ray spectrum of GRS 1915+105, correlated to the radio emission. Similar to the results obtained for Cygnus X-3, the flux of X-rays softer than the pivoting point correlates with the radio emission, while the corresponding harder X-ray flux anti-correlates with both the radio and the softer X-ray emission, in this state. We examine all the previously reported correlations of X-ray properties with the radio emission in Galactic microquasars and argue that these are consistent with a general picture where a spectral pivoting is a common feature in these sources with the shape of the spectrum determining the flux of radio emission, during the hard states. We also detect a general monotonic increase in the radio emission of these sources with the soft X-ray emission spanning about 5 orders of magnitude. We qualitatively explain these findings with a Two Component Advective Flow model where the location of a boundary layer between the thin disk and the Comptonizing region determines the spectral shape and also the amount of outflow.

Eigenvalue spectrum for single particle in a spheroidal cavity: A Semiclassical approach

Following the semiclassical formalism of Strutinsky et al., we have obtained the complete eigenvalue spectrum for a particle enclosed in an infinitely high spheroidal cavity. Our spheroidal trace formula also reproduces the results of a spherical billiard in the limit $η\to1.0$. Inclusion of repetition of each family of the orbits with reference to the largest one significantly improves the eigenvalues of sphere and an exact comparison with the quantum mechanical results is observed upto the second decimal place for $kR_{0}\geq{7}$. The contributions of the equatorial, the planar (in the axis of symmetry plane) and the non-planar(3-Dimensional) orbits are obtained from the same trace formula by using the appropriate conditions. The resulting eigenvalues compare very well with the quantum mechanical eigenvalues at normal deformation. It is interesting that the partial sum of equatorial orbits leads to eigenvalues with maximum angular momentum projection, while the summing of planar orbits leads to eigenvalues with $L_z=0$ except for L=1. The remaining quantum mechanical eigenvalues are observed to arise from the 3-dimensional(3D) orbits. Very few spurious eigenvalues arise in these partial sums. This result establishes the important role of 3D orbits even at normal deformations.

Disk-Jet Connection in Cygnus X-3

We present the results of a detailed correlation study between the soft X-ray, hard X-ray, and radio emission (obtained from RXTE ASM, BATSE, and GBI observations, respectively) of the bright radio emitting Galactic X-ray binary Cygnus X-3. We detect a very strong positive correlation between the soft X-ray and radio emission during the low-hard and minor flaring periods of the source, and an anti-correlation between the soft and hard X-ray emissions. We present statistical arguments to suggest that the anti-correlation between the radio and hard X-ray emission, reported earlier, is primarily due to their correlation and anti-correlation, respectively, with the soft X-ray emission. We make a wide band X-ray spectral study using the pointed RXTE observations and detect a pivotal behaviour in the X-ray spectrum. We argue that this X-ray spectral pivoting is responsible for the anti-correlation between the soft and hard X-ray emissions. The strong correlation between the soft X-ray and radio emission suggests a close link between the accreting mechanism, plasma cloud surrounding the compact object and the radio emission.
