Evolution of the bulk properties, structure, magnetic order, and superconductivity with Ni doping in CaFe2-xNixAs2

Magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, neutron and x-ray diffraction have been used to characterize the properties of single crystalline CaFe2-xNixAs2 as a function of Ni doping for x varying from 0 to 0.1. The combined first-order structural and magnetic phase transitions occur together in the undoped system at 172 K, with a small decrease in the area of the a-b plane along with an abrupt increase in the length of the c-axis in the orthorhombic phase. With increasing x the ordered moment and transition temperature decrease, but the transition remains sharp at modest doping while the area of the a-b plane quickly decreases and then saturates. Warming and cooling data in the resistivity and neutron diffraction indicate hysteresis of ~2 K. At larger doping the transition is more rounded, and decreases to zero for x=0.06. The susceptibility is anisotropic for all values of x. Electrical resistivity for x = 0.053 and 0.06 shows a superconducting transition with an onset of nearly 15 K which is further corroborated by substantial diamagnetic susceptibility. For the fully superconducting sample there is no long range magnetic order and the structure remains tetragonal at all temperature, but there is an anomalous increase in the area of the a-b plane in going to low T. Heat capacity data show that the density of states at the Fermi level increases for x > 0.053 as inferred from the value of Sommerfeld coefficient. The regime of superconductivity is quite restrictive, with a maximum TC of 15 K and an upper critical field Hc2=14 T. Superconductivity disappears in the overdoped region.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy in RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La, Ce and Pr) single crystals

Anisotropic magnetic properties of single crystalline RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La, Ce and Pr) compounds are reported. LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} exhibit a Pauli-paramagnetic behavior whereas CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} and PrAu_{2}Ge_{2} show an antiferromagnetic ordering with N\grave{e}el temperatures T_{N} = 13.5 and 9 K, respectively. The anisotropic magnetic response of Ce and Pr compounds establishes [001] as the easy axis of magnetization and a sharp spin-flip type metamagnetic transition is observed in the magnetic isotherms. The resistance and magnetoresistance behavior of these compounds, in particular LaAu_{2}Ge_{2}, indicate an anisotropic Fermi surface. The magnetoresistivity of CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} apparently reveals the presence of a residual Kondo interaction. A crystal electric field analysis of the anisotropic susceptibility in conjunction with the experimentally inferred Schottky heat capacity enables us to propose a crystal electric field level scheme for Ce and Pr compounds. For CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} our values are in excellent agreement with the previous reports on neutron diffraction. The heat capacity data in LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} show clearly the existence of Einstein contribution to the heat capacity.

Magnetic and electrical properties of RCo2Mn (R=Ho, Er) compounds

The RCo2Mn (R= Ho and Er) alloys, crystallizing in the cubic MgCu2-type structure, are isostructural to RCo2 compounds. The excess Mn occupies both the R and the Co atomic positions. Magnetic, electrical and heat capacity measurements have been done in these comounds. The Curie temperature is found to be 248 K and 222 K for HoCo2Mn and ErCo2Mn respectively, which are considerably higher than that of the corresponding RCo2 compounds. Saturation magnetization values calculated in these samples are less compared to that of the corresponding RCo2 compounds. Heat capacity data have been fitted with the nonmagnetic contribution with Debye temperature =250 K and electronic coefficient=26 mJ mol^-1K^-2.

Field dependent competing magnetic ordering in multiferroic Ni3V2O8

The geometrically frustrated magnet Ni3V2O8 undergoes a series of competing magnetic ordering at low temperatures. Most importantly, one of the incommensurate phases has been reported to develop a ferroelectric correlation caused by spin frustration. Here we report an extensive thermodynamic, dielectric and magnetic study on clean polycrystalline samples of this novel multiferroic compound. Our low temperature specific heat data at high fields up to 14 Tesla clearly identify the development of a new magnetic field induced phase transition below 2 K that shows signatures of simultaneous electric ordering. We also report temperature and field dependent dielectric constant that enables us to quantitatively estimate the strength of magneto-electric coupling in this improper ferroelectric material.

Thermal and Transport Behavior of Single Crystalline R2CoGa8 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu and Y) Compounds

The anisotropy in electrical transport and thermal behavior of single crystalline R$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ series of compounds is presented. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space gropup P4/mmm. The nonmagnetic counterparts of the series namely Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Lu$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$show a behavior consistent with the low density of states at the fermi level. In Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, a possibility of charge density wave transition is observed at $\approx$ 30 K. Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Er$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ show a presence of short range correlation above the magnetic ordering temperature of the compound. In case of Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, the magnetoresistance exhibits a significant anisotropy for current parallel to {[}100{]} and {[}001{]} directions. Compounds with other magnetic rare earths (R = Tb, Dy, Ho and Tm) show the normal expected magnetic behavior whereas Dy$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ exhibits the possibility of charge density wave (CDW) transition at approximately same temperature as that of Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$. The thermal property of these compounds is analysed on the basis of crystalline electric field (CEF) calculations.

Anisotropic magnetic and superconducting properties of pure and Co-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

We report anisotropic dc magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, and heat capacity $C(T)$ measurements on the single crystals of CaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ for $x$ = 0 and 0.06. Large sized single crystals were grown by the high temperature solution method with Sn as the solvent. For the pure compound with $x$ = 0, a high temperature transition at 170 K is observed which is attributed to a combined spin density wave (SDW) ordering and a structural phase transition. On the other hand, for the Co-doped samples for $x$ = 0.06, the SDW transition is suppressed while superconductivity is observed at $\simeq$17 K. The superconducting transition has been confirmed from the magnetization and electrical resistivity studies. The $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectrum in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ indicates that the SDW ordering is incommensurate. In the Co-doped sample, a prominent paramagnetic line at 4.2 K is observed indicating a weakening of the SDW state.

Sign reversal in the exchange bias and the collapse of hysteresis width across the magnetic compensation temperature in a single crystal of Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2

In the admixed Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2 system, magnetic moments of Nd and Ho occupying the same crystallographic site are antiferromagnetically coupled and the chosen stoichiometry displays a magnetic compensation behavior (Tcomp of about 24 K) in all orientations. In the vicinity of Tcomp, the conduction electron polarization (CEP) assumes the role of a soft ferromagnet exchange coupled to a pseudo-antiferromagnet comprising Nd/Ho moments, resulting in an asymmetry in the hysteretic (M-H) loop, i.e., the notion of an exchange bias field (Hexch). Across Tcomp, the CEP contribution reverses sign, and in consonance, the asymmetry in the M-H loop also undergoes a phase reversal. Interestingly, the width of the M-H loop shows a divergence, followed by a collapse on approaching Tcomp from either end. The observed behavior confirms a long standing prediction based on a phenomenological model for ferrimagnetic systems. The field induced changes across Tcomp leave an imprint of a quasi-phase transition in the heat capacity data. Magneto-resistance (ΔR / R vs T) has an oscillatory response, in which the changes across Tc and Tcomp can be recognized.

Anomalous magnetization behavior in Ce(Fe,Si)2

We report the effect of Si doping on the magnetization behavior of CeFe2. It is found that Si stabilizes the dynamic antiferromagnetic state of CeFe2. Multi-step magnetization behavior, unusual relaxation effect, thermal and magnetic history dependence, which are signatures of martensitic scenario, are found to be present in this system. We also show that one can induce the magnetization steps with the help of appropriate measurement protocol. Detailed magnetization relaxation studies have been carried out to understand the dynamics of magnetic phase transition.

Anomalous Magnetic Properties in Ni50Mn35In15

We present here a comprehensive investigation of the magnetic ordering in Ni50Mn35In15 composition. A concomitant first order martensitic transition and the magnetic ordering occurring in this off-stoichiometric Heusler compound at room temperature signifies the multifunctional character of this magnetic shape memory alloy. Unusual features are observed in the dependence of the magnetization on temperature that can be ascribed to a frustrated magnetic order. It is compelling to ascribe these features to the cluster type description that may arise due to inhomogeneity in the distribution of magnetic atoms. However, evidences are presented from our ac susceptibility, electrical resistivity and dc magnetization studies that there exists a competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order within crystal structure of this system. We show that excess Mn atoms that substitute the In atoms have a crucial bearing on the magnetic order of this compound. These excess Mn atoms are antiferromagnetically aligned to the other Mn, which explains the peculiar dependence of magnetization on temperature.

Effect of Pt doping on the critical temperature and upper critical field in YNi2-xPtxB2C (x=0-0.2)

We investigate the evolution of superconducting properties by doping non-magnetic impurity in single crystals of YNi2-xPtxB2C (x=0-0.2). With increasing Pt doping the critical temperature (Tc) monotonically decreases from 15.85K and saturates to a value ~13K for x>0.14. However, unlike conventional s-wave superconductors, the upper critical field (HC2) along both crystallographic directions a and c decreases with increasing Pt doping. Specific heat measurements show that the density of states (N(EF)) at the Fermi level (EF) and the Debye temperatures (Theta_D) in this series remains constant within the error bars of our measurement. We explain our results based on the increase in intraband scattering in the multiband superconductor YNi2B2C.

Repeated magnetic compensation behaviour in Nd0.75Gd0.25Rh3B2 alloy having hexagonal structure and planar anisotropy

The results of dc and ac magnetization, electrical resistance and heat capacity studies in an admixed rare earth alloy Nd0.75Gd0.25Rh3B2, which is close to the zero magnetization limit, are reported. Novel observations include the two antiferromagnetic like transitions, concomitant repeated/multiple magnetic compensation behaviour and a characteristic oscillatory magnetic response, with temperature dependence of magnetization at low fields crossing the M = 0 axis thrice. The effective coercive field relating to the residual remanence also has an oscillatory response, with two minima located close to two zero-crossover temperatures. The unusual behavior in Nd0.75Gd0.25Rh3B2 is conjectured to arise from its anisotropic hexagonal structure, with planar anisotropy, resulting in a quasi one dimensional electronic structure and the accentuated role of conduction electron polarization near the zero magnetization limit.

Unusual field dependence of remanent magnetization in granular CrO2: possible role of piezomagnetism

We present low field thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) measurements in granular CrO2 and composites of ferromagnetic (FM) CrO2 and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Cr2O3. TRM in these samples is seen to display two distinct time scales. A quasi static part of remanence, appearing only in low field regime exhibits a peculiar field dependence. TRM is seen to first rise and then fall with increasing cooling fields, eventually vanishing above a critical field. Similar features in TRM have previously been observed in some antiferromagnets that exhibit the phenomenon of piezomagnetism. Scaling analysis of the TRM data suggest that presumably piezomoments generated in the AFM component drive the FM magnetization dynamics in these granular systems in low field regime.

Magnetism in Gallium doped CeFe_2: The martensitic scenario

Ce(Fe_{1-x}Ga_x)_2 compounds with x = 0, 0.01, 0.025 and 0.05 have been investigated to unravel the effect of Ga on the magnetic state of CeFe_2. For the first time, we find that the dynamic antiferromagnetic phase present in CeFe_2 gets stabilized with Ga substitution. The hysteresis loops show that while the compounds with x = 0 and 0.01 show normal behavior, the other two show multiple magnetization steps across the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition region. The virgin curve is found to lie outside the envelope curve in these two compounds, similar to the observations made in Ru and Re substituted CeFe_2 compounds. Temperature, sweep rate and time dependences of the magnetization show that the compounds with x >=0.025 possess glassy behavior at low temperatures. Various results obtained reveal that these two compounds belong to the martensite family.

Room Temperature Magnetocaloric Effect in Ni-Mn-In

We have studied the effect of magnetic field on a non-stoichiometric Heusler alloy Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{35}$In$_{15}$ that undergoes a martensitic as well as a magnetic transition near room temperature. Temperature dependent magnetization measurements demonstrate the influence of magnetic field on the structural phase transition temperature. From the study of magnetization as a function of applied field, we show the occurrence of inverse-magnetocaloric effect associated with this magneto-structural transition. The magnetic entropy change attains a value as high as 25 J/kg-K (at 5 T field) at room temperature as the alloy transforms from the austenitic to martensitic phase with a concomitant magnetic ordering.

Thermodynamic Properties of Ferromagnetic Mott- Insulators GaV4S8

We present the results of the magnetic and specific heat measurements on V4 tetrahedral-cluster compound GaV4S8 between 2 to 300K. We find two transitions related to a structural change at 42K followed by ferromagnetic order at 12K on cooling. Remarkably similar properties were previously reported for the cluster compounds of Mo4. These compounds show an extremely high density of low energy excitations in their electronic properties. We explain this behavior in a cluster compound as due to the reduction of coulomb repulsion among electrons that occupy highly degenerate orbits of different clusters.

Magnetic, magneto-thermal and magneto-transport properties in SmMn2Si2-xGex compounds

The effect of Ge substitution for Si in SmMMn2Si2-xGex compounds has been studied. The Sm ordering temperature is found to be much larger in the compound with x=2, as compared to the compounds with x=0 and 1. The increase in the intra layer Mn-Mn distance is found to be responsible for this increase. Among these three compounds, SmMn2Ge2 is found to show re-entrant ferromagnetism at low temperatures. The magnetic contribution to the heat capacity has been found in all the three compounds. The splitting of the ground state multiplet has been estimated by fitting the magnetic part of the heat capacity data using the Schottky formula. The isothermal magnetic entropy change is found to remain the same for x=0 and 1, but decrease in the compound with x=2, though the nature of magnetic transition changes from second order to first order, as x is increased from 0 to 2. The electrical resistivity increases with Ge concentration. The excess resistivity in the antiferromagnetic region has been calculated.

Sm2Al: Another ferromagnet with spin-orbital compensation?

We report the observation of a compensation point in the temperature dependence of magnetization data of polycrystalline Sm2Al. Magnetization measurements show that this compound magnetically orders at about 150 K. Below this temperature, the magnetization data shows a compensation point, which shifts with field. Hysteresis loops obtained below the compensation temperature show that the compound possesses exchange anisotropy. Both the exchange anisotropy field and the coercive field are found to be quite large and comparable to those of the classical spin-orbit compensated ferromagnet (Sm,Gd)Al2. The heat capacity data also suggest that there are similarities between (Sm,Gd)Al2 and Sm2Al.

Multiple magnetic transitions and magnetocaloric effect in Gd1-xSmxMn2Ge2 compounds

Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline samples of Gd1-xSmxMn2Ge2 have been studied. All the compounds except GdMn2Ge2 show re-entrant ferromagnetic behavior. Multiple magnetic transitions observed in these compounds are explained on the basis of the temperature dependences of the exchange strengths of the rare earth and Mn sublattices. Magnetocaloric effect is found to be positive at the re-entrant ferromagnetic transition, whereas it is negative at the antiferro-ferromagnetic transition. In SmMn2Ge2, the magnetic entropy change associated with the re-entrant transition is found to decrease with field, which is attributed to the admixture effect of the crystal field levels. The isothermal magnetic entropy change is found to decrease with increase in Sm concentration.
