A rare simultaneous detection of a mid-latitude plasma depleted structure in O($^1$D) 630.0 nm and O($^1$S) 557.7 nm all-sky airglow images on a geomagnetically quiet night

In general, nighttime thermospheric 557.7 nm emission over mid-latitudes is predominantly masked by significantly larger mesospheric component, and hence, F-region plasma structures are rarely observed in this emission. This paper reports the first rare simultaneous detection of F-region plasma depleted structure in O($^1$D) 630.0 nm and O($^1$S) 557.7 nm airglow images from Hanle, India, a mid-latitude station (32.7°N, 78.9°E; Mlat. ~24.1°N) on a geomagnetically quiet night (Ap=3) of 26 June 2021. This indicates significant enhancement of thermospheric 557.7 nm emission. Interestingly, thermospheric 557.7 nm emission was not significant on the following geomagnetically quiet night as MSTID bands were only observed in 630.0 nm images. We show that enhanced dissociative recombination caused by descent of F-layer peak over the observation region coupled with the significant increase of the electron density at thermospheric 557.7 nm emission altitude enabled the detection of the plasma depleted structure on 26 June 2021.

Parallel plate capacitor analogy of equatorial plasma bubble and associated fringe fields with implications to equatorial valley region irregularities

VHF radar echoes from the valley region plasma irregularities, displaying ascending pattern, are often observed during the active phase of equatorial plasma bubble in the close vicinity of the geomagnetic equator and have been attributed to bubble-related fringe field effect. These irregularities however are not observed at a few degrees away from the equator. In this paper, we attempt to understand this contrasting observational result by comparing fringe field at the geomagnetic equator and low latitudes. We use parallel plate capacitor analogy of equatorial plasma bubble and choose a few capacitor configurations, consistent with commonly observed dimension and magnetic field-aligned property of plasma bubble, for computing fringe field. Results show that fringe field decreases significantly with decreasing altitude as expected. Further, fringe field decreases remarkably with latitude, which clearly indicates the role of magnetic field-aligned property of plasma bubble in reducing the magnitude of fringe field at low latitudes compared to that at the geomagnetic equator. The results are presented and discussed in the light of current understanding of plasma bubble-associated fringe field-induced plasma irregularities in the valley region.

Refinement on non-hydrostatic shallow granular flow model in a global Cartesian coordinate system

Current shallow granular flow models suited to arbitrary topography can be divided into two types, those formulated in bed-fitted curvilinear coordinates, and those formulated in global Cartesian coordinates. The shallow granular flow model of Denlinger and Iverson \cite{Denlinger2004} and the Boussinesq-type shallow granular flow theory of Castro-Orgaz \emph{et al}. \cite{Castro2014} are formulated in a Cartesian coordinate system (with $z$ vertical), and both account for the effect of nonzero vertical acceleration on depth-averaged momentum fluxes and stress states. In this paper, we first reformulate the vertical normal stress of Castro-Orgaz \emph{et al}. \cite{Castro2014} in a quadratic polynomial in the relative elevation $η$. This form allows for analytical depth integration of the vertical normal stress. We then calculate the basal normal stress based on the basal friction law and scaling analysis. These calculations, plus certain constitutive relations, lead to a refined full non-hydrostatic shallow granular flow model, which is further rewritten in a form of Boussinesq-type water wave equations for future numerical studies. In the present numerical study, we apply the open-source code TITAN2D to numerical solution of a low-order version of the full model involving only a mean vertical acceleration correction term. To cure the numerical instability associated with discretization of the enhanced gravity, we propose an approximate formula for the enhanced gravity by utilizing the hydrostatic pressure assumption in the bed normal direction. Numerical calculations are conducted for several test cases involving steep slopes. Comparison with a bed-fitted model shows that even the simplified non-hydrostatic Cartesian model can be used to simulate shallow granular flows over arbitrary topography.

Dynamic Spin Injection into Chemical Vapor Deposited Graphene

We demonstrate dynamic spin injection into chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown graphene by spin pumping from permalloy (Py) layers. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements at room temperature reveal a strong enhancement of the Gilbert damping at the Py/graphene interface, exceeding that observed in even Py/platinum interfaces. Similar results are also shown on Co/graphene layers. This enhancement in the Gilbert damping is understood as the consequence of spin pumping at the interface driven by magnetization dynamics. Our observations suggest a strong enhancement of spin-orbit coupling in CVD graphene, in agreement with earlier spin valve measurements.
