Coexistence of charged stripes and superconductivity in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

One of the most important outstanding problems in condensed matter physics is determination the ground state of strongly correlated electron system, in particular high-temperature superconductors (HTSC). For these materials, theoretical1-6 and experimental7-13 evidence has been mounting in support of the possibility that their ground state exhibits spin and charge density waves (SDW and CDW), which are primarily one-dimensional (i.e. stripes) and which either compete with or promote superconductivity. Coexistence of CDW or SDW and superconductivity has previously been reported in the lower Tc materials7-9,12,13 and in the presence of large magnetic fields10,11. The absence of data showing stripes in the higher Tc materials in zero field has lent support to the idea that stripes are competing with high temperature superconductivity. However, here we show, using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), the existence of static striped density of electronic states in nearly optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d in zero field. This modulation is aligned with the Cu-O bonds, with a periodicity of four lattice constants, and exhibits features characteristic of a two-dimensional system of line objects. We further show that the density of states modulation manifests itself as a shift of states from above to below the superconducting gap. The fact that a single energy scale (i. e., the gap) appears for both superconductivity and stripes suggests that these two effects have the same origin.

Inherent Inhomogeneities in Tunneling Spectra of BSCCO Crystals in the Superconducting State

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy on cleaved BSCCO(2212) single crystals reveal inhomogeneities on length-scales of $\sim$30 $Å$. While most of the surface yields spectra consistent with a d-wave superconductor, small regions show a doubly gapped structure with both gaps lacking coherence peaks and the larger gap having a size typical of the respective pseudo-gap for the same sample.

Microcantilever Studies of Angular Field Dependence of Vortex Dynamics in BSCCO

Using a nanogram-sized single crystal of BSCCO attached to a microcantilever we demonstrate in a direct way that in magnetic fields nearly parallel to the {\it ab} plane the magnetic field penetrates the sample in the form of Josephson vortices rather than in the form of a tilted vortex lattice. We further investigate the relation between the Josephson vortices and the pancake vortices generated by the perpendicular field component.

Deviations from Matthiessen's Rule for ${\rm SrRuO_3}$ and ${\rm CaRuO_3}$

We have measured the change in the resistivity of thin films of ${\rm SrRuO_3}$ and ${\rm CaRuO_3}$ upon introducing point defects by electron irradiation at low temperatures, and we find significant deviations from Matthiessen's rule. For a fixed irradiation dose, the induced change in resistivity {\it decreases} with increasing temperature. Moreover, for a fixed temperature, the increase in resistivity with irradiation is found to be {\it sublinear}. We suggest that the observed behavior is due to the marked anisotropic scattering of the electrons together with their relatively short mean free path (both characteristic of many metallic oxides including cuprates) which amplify effects related to the Pippard ineffectiveness condition.

Nonlinear I-V, High Flux-Flow Velocity Instability and Evidence for Quantum Fluctuations in BSCCO Superconducting Films

The large flux-flow velocity behavior of the high temperature superconductor BSCCO in the mixed state is studied by measurement of the current-voltage characteristic as a function of temperature and magnetic field direction. We find strong evidence for vortex-antivortex pairs that are excited by quantum fluctuations and contribute to the dissipation when dissociated by a large current.

Thermal conductivity of pure and Mg-doped CuGeO_3 in the incommensurate phase

The thermal conductivity κof Cu_1-xMg_xGeO_3 is measured in magnetic fields up to 16 T. At the transition field H_c to the high-field incommensurate (I) phase, κabruptly decreases. While κof the pure CuGeO_3 is enhanced with the application of higher magnetic fields, an anomalous plateau feature shows up in the κ(H) profile in the I phase of the Mg-doped samples which includes antiferromagnetic ordering (I-AF phase). With the help of specific heat data, taken supplementally for the identical samples, the above features are well understood that phonons are strongly scattered by spin solitons and that κin the I phase is governed by their spatial distribution. In particular, the plateau feature in the doped samples suggests "freezing" of the solitons, in which antiferromagnetism must be playing an essential role because this feature is absent at temperatures above T_N.

Temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent thermal conductivity of pure and Zn-doped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} single crystals

The thermal conductivity κof Bi-2212 is measured in pure and Zn-doped crystals as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The in-plane resistivity is also measured on the identical samples. Using these data, we make a crude estimate of the impurity-scattering rate Γof the pure and the Zn-doped crystals. Our measurement show that the "plateau" in the κ(H) profile is not observed in the majority of our Bi-2212 crystals, including one of the cleanest crystals available to date. The estimated values of Γfor the pure and Zn-doped samples allow us to compare the κ(H) data with the existing theories of the quasiparticle heat transport in d-wave superconductors under magnetic field. Our analysis indicates that a proper inclusion of the quasiparticle-vortex scattering, which is expected to play the key role in the peculiar behavior of the κ(H), is important for a quantitative understanding of the QP heat transport in the presence of the vortices.

Observation of domain wall resistivity in $\rm SrRuO_3$

$\rm SrRuO_3$ is an itinerant ferromagnet with $T_c \sim 150 \rm K$. When $\rm SrRuO_3$ is cooled through $T_c$ in zero applied magnetic field, a stripe domain structure appears whose orientation is uniquely determined by the large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. We find that the ferromagnetic domain walls clearly enhance the resisitivity of $\rm SrRuO_3$ and that the enhancement has different temperature dependence for currents parallel and perpendicular to the domain walls. We discuss possible interpretations of our results.

Impurity-Induced Bound Excitations on the Surface of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8

We have probed the effects of atomic-scale impurities on superconductivity in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8} by performing low-temperature tunneling spectroscopy measurements with a scanning tunneling microscope. Our results show that non-magnetic defect structures at the surface create localized low-energy excitations in their immediate vicinity. The impurity-induced excitations occur over a range of energies including the middle of the superconducting gap, at the Fermi level. Such a zero bias state is a predicted feature for strong non-magnetic scattering in a d-wave superconductor.

Thermal Conductivity of the Spin Peierls Compound CuGeO_3

The thermal conductivity of the Spin-Peierls (SP) compound CuGeO_3 was measured in magnetic fields up to 16 T. Above the SP transition, the heat transport due to spin excitations causes a peak at around 22 K, while below the transition the spin excitations rapidly diminish and the heat transport is dominated by phonons; however, the main scattering process of the phonons is with spin excitations, which demonstrates itself in an unusual peak in the thermal conductivity at about 5.5 K. This low-temperature peak is strongly suppressed with magnetic fields in excess of 12.5 T.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior of SrRuO_3 -- evidence from infrared conductivity

The reflectivity of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO_3 has been measured between 50 and 25,000 cm-1 at temperatures ranging from 40 to 300 K, and used to obtain conductivity, scattering rate, and effective mass as a function of frequency and temperature. We find that at low temperatures the conductivity falls unusually slowly as a function of frequency (proportional to ω^{-1/2}), and at high temperatures it even appears to increase as a function of frequency in the far-infrared limit. The data suggest that the charge dynamics of SrRuO_3 are substantially different from those of Fermi-liquid metals.

Dynamical Phase Transition in a Driven Disordered Vortex Lattice

Using Langevin dynamics, we have investigated the dynamics of vortices in a disordered two dimensional superconductor subjected to a uniform driving current. The results provide direct numerical evidence for a dynamical phase transition between a plastic flow regime and a moving ``hexatic glass." The simulated current-voltage characteristics are in excellent agreement with recent transport measurements on amorphous ${\rm Mo_{77}Ge_{23}}$ thin film superconductors.

Field-driven topological glass transition in a model flux line lattice

We show that the flux line lattice in a model layered HTSC becomes unstable above a critical magnetic field with respect to a plastic deformation via penetration of pairs of point-like disclination defects. The instability is characterized by the competition between the elastic and the pinning energies and is essentially assisted by softening of the lattice induced by a dimensional crossover of the fluctuations as field increases. We confirm through a computer simulation that this indeed may lead to a phase transition from crystalline order at low fields to a topologically disordered phase at higher fields. We propose that this mechanism provides a model of the low temperature field--driven disordering transition observed in neutron diffraction experiments on ${\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8\, }$ single crystals.

Effects of Columnar Pins on Flux Line Dynamics

The effects of columnar pins on the flux lines in a model High-Tc superconductor in an applied field are studied through Monte Carlo simulations. An analytic solution for a single line case is obtained and compared with the simulation results. By introducing a tilted potential, we study simulated ``IV" characteristics and the results indicate a distinct scaling behavior above and below the depinning temperature. We introduce a diverging length scale measured in terms of a ``retrapping length'' to analyze self-similar behavior across the depinning transition.
