High-energy neutrinos from Galactic sources

Even 100 years after the discovery of cosmic rays their origin remains a mystery. In recent years, TeV gamma-ray detectors have discovered and investigated many Galactic sources where particles are accelerated up to energies of 100 TeV. However, it has not been possible up to now to identify these sites unambiguously as sources of hadronic acceleration. The observation of cosmic high-energy neutrinos from these or other sources will be a smoking-gun evidence for the sites of the acceleration of cosmic rays.

Reconstruction methods for acoustic particle detection in the deep sea using clusters of hydrophones

This article focuses on techniques for acoustic noise reduction, signal filters and source reconstruction. For noise reduction, bandpass filters and cross correlations are found to be efficient and fast ways to improve the signal to noise ratio and identify a possible neutrino-induced acoustic signal. The reconstruction of the position of an acoustic point source in the sea is performed by using small-volume clusters of hydrophones (about 1 cubic meter) for direction reconstruction by a beamforming algorithm. The directional information from a number of such clusters allows for position reconstruction. The algorithms for data filtering, direction and position reconstruction are explained and demonstrated using simulated data.

KM3NeT: A Next Generation Neutrino Telescope in the Mediterranean Sea

To complement the IceCube neutrino telescope currently under construction at the South Pole, the three Mediterranean neutrino telescope projects ANTARES, NEMO and NESTOR have joined forces to develop, construct and operate a km^3-scale neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. Since February 2006, the technical specifications and performance of such a detector are studied in the framework of a 3-year EU-funded Design Study. In 2009 a technical design report will be released laying the foundations for the construction of the detector. In the following, the current status of the Design Study is presented and examples of solutions for the technical challenges are discussed.

The design and performance of the ZEUS Micro Vertex detector

In order to extend the tracking acceptance, to improve the primary and secondary vertex reconstruction and thus enhancing the tagging capabilities for short lived particles, the ZEUS experiment at the HERA Collider at DESY installed a silicon strip vertex detector. The barrel part of the detector is a 63 cm long cylinder with silicon sensors arranged around an elliptical beampipe. The forward part consists of four circular shaped disks. In total just over 200k channels are read out using $2.9 {\rm m^2}$ of silicon. In this report a detailed overview of the design and construction of the detector is given and the performance of the completed system is reviewed.

Integration of Acoustic Detection Equipment into ANTARES

The ANTARES group at the University of Erlangen is working towards the integration of a set of acoustic sensors into the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope. With this setup, tests of acoustic particle detection methods and background studies shall be performed. The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope, which is currently being constructed in the Mediterranean Sea, will be equipped with the infrastructure to accommodate a 3-dimensional array of photomultipliers for the detection of Cherenkov light. Within this infrastructure, the required resources for acoustic sensors are available: Bandwidth for the transmission of the acoustic data to the shore, electrical power for the off-shore electronics and physical space to install the acoustic sensors and to route the connecting cables (transmitting signals and power) into the electronics containers. It will be explained how the integration will be performed with minimal modifications of the existing ANTARES design and which setup is foreseen for the acquisition of the acoustic data.

Measurements and Simulation Studies of Piezoceramics for Acoustic Particle Detection

Calibration sources are an indispensable tool for all detectors. In acoustic particle detection the goal of a calibration source is to mimic neutrino signatures as expected from hadronic cascades. A simple and promising method for the emulation of neutrino signals are piezo ceramics. We will present results of measruements and simulations on these piezo ceramics.

Testing Thermo-acoustic Sound Generation in Water with Proton and Laser Beams

Experiments were performed at a proton accelerator and an infrared laser acility to investigate the sound generation caused by the energy deposition of pulsed particle and laser beams in water. The beams with an energy range of 1 PeV to 400 PeV per proton beam spill and up to 10 EeV for the laser pulse were dumped into a water volume and the resulting acoustic signals were recorded with pressure sensitive sensors. Measurements were performed at varying pulse energies, sensor positions, beam diameters and temperatures. The data is well described by simulations based on the thermo-acoustic model. This implies that the primary mechanism for sound generation by the energy deposition of particles propagating in water is the local heating of the media giving rise to an expansion or contraction of the medium resulting in a pressure pulse with bipolar shape. A possible application of this effect would be the acoustical detection of neutrinos with energies greater than 1 EeV.

Beam Test of Silicon Strip Sensors for the ZEUS Micro Vertex Detector

For the HERA upgrade, the ZEUS experiment has designed and installed a high precision Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) using single sided micro-strip sensors with capacitive charge division. The sensors have a readout pitch of 120 microns, with five intermediate strips (20 micron strip pitch). An extensive test program has been carried out at the DESY-II testbeam facility. In this paper we describe the setup developed to test the ZEUS MVD sensors and the results obtained on both irradiated and non-irradiated single sided micro-strip detectors with rectangular and trapezoidal geometries. The performances of the sensors coupled to the readout electronics (HELIX chip, version 2.2) have been studied in detail, achieving a good description by a Monte Carlo simulation. Measurements of the position resolution as a function of the angle of incidence are presented, focusing in particular on the comparison between standard and newly developed reconstruction algorithms.

Structure Function Results from ZEUS

This contribution presents recent ZEUS results on proton structure functions at HERA. The inclusive phi(1020)-meson cross section was measured, and it was used to determine the s-quark content of the proton. The structure function F_2 was extracted using initial-state radiative events. Neutral and charged current cross sections were used to extract the structure function xF_3 and measure the mass of the W boson, respectively. A NLO QCD fit to ZEUS data and fixed target cross sections was employed to determine the parton density functions of the quarks and of the gluon inside the proton.

Study of Deep Inelastic ep-Scattering at High-Q^2 with ZEUS at HERA

Measurements of differential cross sections for deep inelastic ep neutral-current (NC) and charged-current (CC) reactions are presented using data taken during the 1994-97 e^+p and the 1998-99 e^-p running periods. The structure function xF_3 has been extracted combining NC e^-p and e^+p data sets. Both the measured cross sections and xF_3 are well described by the standard model predictions using standard PDF's.
