LinApart3: efficient algorithm for multivariate partial fraction decomposition with linear denominators

We present LinApart3, an efficient multivariate partial fraction decomposition algorithm for rational functions with linear denominators. Our decomposition algorithm guarantees that each term contains at most as many distinct denominators from the original set as partial fraction variables, introduces no spurious singularities, is independent of variable ordering, and is insensitive to the presence of spectator variables. While general multivariate approaches based on Gr\"obner bases or Leinartas' method handle arbitrary polynomial denominators, they suffer from intermediate expression swell. LinApart3 replaces polynomial-ideal computations with linear algebra and residue extraction by exploiting the geometry of the hyperplane arrangement defined by the denominators, circumventing this issue just as LinApart did in the univariate case. Because the individual basis contributions are independent, the algorithm is moreover naturally parallelizable. To showcase the utility of our algorithm we implemented the algorithm both in Wolfram Mathematica and FORM.

Status of QCD precision predictions for Drell-Yan rapidity distributions

We compute differential distributions for Drell-Yan processes at the LHC and the Tevatron colliders at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD, including fiducial cuts on the decay leptons in the final state. The comparison of predictions obtained with four different codes shows excellent agreement, once linear power corrections from the fiducial cuts are included in those codes that rely on phase-space slicing subtraction schemes. For Z-boson production we perform a detailed study of the symmetric cuts on the transverse momenta of the decay leptons. Predictions at fixed order in perturbative QCD for those symmetric cuts, typically imposed in experiments, suffer from an instability. We show how this can be remedied by an all-order resummation of the fiducial transverse momentum spectrum, and we comment on the choice of cuts for future experimental analyses.

$W$ + charm associated hadroproduction: relevance of Shower Monte Carlo effects

Data on $W + D$-meson and $W + c$-jet hadroproduction have recently started to be included in at least some of the parton distribution function fits, mainly because of their potential to constrain the strange quark content of the proton. In this contribution we present predictions for $W + D$-meson and $W + c$-jet production with NLO QCD accuracy matched to parton shower. We show how including the latter effects, as well as hadronization, beam remnant and multiple parton interaction effects present in Shower Monte Carlo codes, is fundamental to provide consistent comparisons with the current experimental data by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, as required for non-biased extractions of the strange and antistrange quark PDFs.

W+charm production with massive c quarks in PowHel

The hadroproduction of a $W$ boson in association with a charm quark at the Large Hadron Collider is at the centre of current investigations due to its potential to probe the strangeness content of the proton. In this paper we present an implementation of the $W+c$ production process in the PowHel event generator matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower approach, allowing to obtain predictions for differential cross-sections with NLO QCD accuracy matched to the accuracy of the Shower Monte Carlo event generator. Effects of non-diagonal CKM matrix elements, finite charm quark mass and off-shell $W$ decays including spin correlations are taken into account. We investigate the production of a leptonically decaying $W$ boson in association with either a charmed meson ($W^\pm~+~D^{*\mp}$) or a charmed jet ($W^\pm~+~j_{c}$) and compare our predictions with particle-level measurements by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7 and 13 TeV. Considering the level of agreement between theory predictions and experimental data in the light of present theoretical and experimental uncertainties, our results do not point to the need of extensive modifications of the strange and antistrange distribution functions in the NLO PDF fits that we used, although collider $W + c$ production data have not been included yet in these fits.

Precision studies for Drell-Yan processes at NNLO

We present a detailed comparison of the fixed-order predictions computed by four publicly available computer codes for Drell-Yan processes at the LHC and Tevatron colliders. We point out that while there is agreement among the predictions at the next-to-leading order accuracy, the predictions at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) differ, whose extent depends on the observable. The sizes of the differences in general are at least similar, sometimes larger than the sizes of the NNLO corrections themselves. We demonstrate that the neglected power corrections by the codes that use global slicing methods for the regularization of double real emissions can be the source of the differences. Depending on the fiducial cuts, those power corrections become linear, hence enhanced as compared to quadratic ones that are considered standard.

Theory for the FCC-ee : Report on the 11th FCC-ee Workshop

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The reports of 2018 and 2019 serve as white papers of the workshop results and subsequent developments.

$α_s$(2019): Precision measurements of the QCD coupling

This document collects a written summary of all contributions presented at the workshop "$α_s$(2019): Precision measurements of the strong coupling" held at ECT* (Trento) in Feb. 11--15, 2019. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from the key categories where high precision measurements are available: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) hadronic $τ$ decays, (iii) deep-inelastic scattering and parton distribution functions, (iv) event shapes, jet cross sections, and other hadronic final-states in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (v) Z boson and W boson hadronic decays, and (vi) hadronic final states in p-p collisions. The status of the current theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, and future perspectives were thoroughly reviewed. Novel $α_s$ determination approaches were discussed, as well as the combination method used to obtain a world-average value of the QCD coupling at the Z mass pole.

$t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ hadroproduction with massive bottom quarks with PowHel

The associated production of top-antitop-bottom-antibottom quarks is a relevant irreducible background for Higgs boson analyses in the top-antitop-Higgs production channel, with Higgs decaying into a bottom-antibottom quark pair. We implement this process in the PowHel event generator, considering the bottom quarks as massive in all steps of the computation which involves hard-scattering matrix-elements in the 4-flavour number scheme combined with 4-flavour Parton Distribution Functions. Predictions with NLO QCD + Parton Shower accuracy, as obtained by PowHel + PYTHIA, are compared to those which resulted from a previous PowHel implementation with hard-scattering matrix-elements in the 5-flavour number scheme, considering as a baseline the example of a realistic analysis of top-antitop hadroproduction with additional $b$-jet activity, performed by the CMS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider.

Hadroproduction of $W^+ W^- b \bar{b}$ at NLO accuracy matched with shower Monte Carlo programs

We present the computation of the differential cross section for the process $pp(\bar{p}) \to (W^+\,W^-\,b\,\bar{b} \to)\;e^+\,ν_e\,μ^-\,\barν_μ\,b\, \bar{b}+X$ at NLO QCD accuracy matched to Shower Monte Carlo (SMC) simulations using PowHel, on the basis of the interface between HELAC-NLO and POWHEG-BOX. We include all resonant and non-resonant contributions. This is achieved by fully taking into account the effect of off-shell t-quarks and off-shell W-bosons in the complex mass scheme. We also present a program called DECAYER that can be used to let the t-quarks present in the event files for $pp(\bar{p}) \to {t\,\bar{t}\,X}$ processes decay including both the finite width of the t-quarks and spin correlations. We present predictions for both the Tevatron and the LHC, with emphasis on differences emerging from three different $W^+\,W^-\,b\,\bar{b}$ hadroproduction computations: (i) full implementation of the $p\,p(\bar{p}) \to W^+\,W^-\,b\,\bar{b}$ process, (ii) generating on-shell t-quarks pushed off-shell with a Breit-Wigner finite width and decayed by DECAYER, and (iii) on-shell t-quark production followed by decay in the narrow width approximation, as described by the SMC.

Hadroproduction of $t\,\bar{t}\,b\,\bar{b}$ final states at LHC: predictions at NLO accuracy matched with Parton Shower

We present predictions for the hadroproduction of $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ final states at the LHC with collision energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 8TeV and 14TeV at NLO accuracy matched with parton shower, as obtained with PowHel+ PYTHIA. We quantify the effects of parton shower and hadronization. We find these are in general moderate except the effect of the decay of heavy particles, which can modify significantly some distributions, like that of the invariant mass of the two leading b-jets. We also show kinematic distributions obtained with cuts inspired to those recently employed by the CMS collaboration. For these predictions, we present the theoretical uncertainty bands, related to both scale and PDF variations. We find that these uncertainties are only moderately affected by the change of the collision energy.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs Properties

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Top-antitop pair hadroproduction in association with a heavy boson at the NLO QCD accuracy + Parton Shower

The PowHel framework allows to make predictions of total and differential cross-sections of multiparticle hadroproduction processes at both NLO QCD accuracy and NLO QCD matched to Parton Shower, on the basis of the interface between the POWHEG-BOX and HELAC-NLO codes. It has already been applied to study several processes involving a top-antitop pair in association with a third particle or hadronic jet. Our most recent predictions concern top-antitop-V hadroproduction (with V = W or Z), at both parton and hadron level, by considering different decay channels (hadronic and leptonic) of the heavy particles. In particular, we show the results of our phenomenological analyses under the same system of cuts also recently adopted by the CMS collaboration at LHC.

t tbar W and t tbar Z Hadroproduction at NLO accuracy in QCD with Parton Shower and Hadronization effects

We present theoretical predictions for the hadroproduction of t tbar W+, t tbar W- and t tbar Z at LHC as obtained by matching numerical computations at NLO accuracy in QCD with Shower Monte Carlo programs. The calculation is performed by PowHel, relying on the POWHEG-BOX framework, that allows for the matching between the fixed order computation, with input of matrix elements produced by the HELAC-NLO collection of event generators, and the Parton Shower evolution, followed by hadronization and hadron decays as described by PYTHIA and HERWIG. We focus on the dilepton and trilepton decay channels, studied recently by the CMS Collaboration.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions

This Report summarises the results of the second year's activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) focuses on predictions (central values and errors) for total Higgs production cross sections and Higgs branching ratios in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension, covering also related issues such as Monte Carlo generators, parton distribution functions, and pseudo-observables. This second Report represents the next natural step towards realistic predictions upon providing results on cross sections with benchmark cuts, differential distributions, details of specific decay channels, and further recent developments.

Z0 - boson production in association with a top anti-top pair at NLO accuracy with parton shower effects

We present predictions for the production cross section of a Standard Model Z0-boson in association with a top-antitop pair at the next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD, matched with shower Monte Carlo programs to evolve the system down to the hadronization energy scale. We adopt a framework based on three well established numerical codes, namely the POWHEG-BOX, used for computing the cross section, HELAC-NLO, which generates all necessary input matrix elements, and finally a parton shower program, such as PYTHIA or HERWIG, which allows for including t-quark and Z0-boson decays at the leading order accuracy and generates shower emissions, hadronization and hadron decays.

Standard Model Higgs boson production in association with a top anti-top pair at NLO with parton showering

We present predictions for the production cross section of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a top-antitop pair at next-to-leading order accuracy using matrix elements obtained from the HELAC-Oneloop package. The NLO prediction was interfaced to the PYTHIA and HERWIG shower Monte Carlo programs with the help of POWHEG-Box, allowing for decays of massive particles, showering and hadronization, thus leading to final results at the hadron level.
